[Bug 1827436] Re: In Lubuntu 19.04, open a file with custom command does not save the settings

2020-02-08 Thread Gregor Darius
I realized right now, that the chosen executable has to have the
executable bit activated, even if it is a shell script or it will not be
accepted.

So my problem is not the bug described here.

[Bug 1843695] Re: Freeze after suspend to RAM nvidia kernel 5.0.0.x

2019-12-02 Thread Gregor Darius
The patch has already been applied on newer ppa nvidia drivers (e.g.
440.36) from here: https://launchpad.net/~oem-solutions-
group/+archive/ubuntu/nvidia-driver-staging

The same problem is being discussed here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1836630

So, this should work now on the hardware I specified above. It should
take some time till it gets into the official nvidia drivers from
canonical.

Just add the ppa on your system and choose the driver from "Software &
Updates" - "Additional Drivers".

[Bug 1836630] Re: System76 Oryx Pro (oryp5) with 5.0.0-21: Fail to resume from suspend

2019-10-02 Thread Gregor Darius
The test results:

Model: PB71RD
board_name: PB50_70RF,RD,RC
- Ubuntu 18.04.3
suspend and wake up works, no other problems found

- Ubuntu 19.10
not possible to test as the system behaves very unstable even without the new
driver

Model: P970RC
board_name: P9XXRC
- Ubuntu 18.04.3
suspend and wake up works, no other problems found

Ubuntu 19.10
- suspend and wake up works, no other problems found

On both notebooks was freeze after suspend on wakeup. It is working now
with the new driver.

Do you need any logfiles or any other kind of tests on those systems?

[Bug 1843695] [NEW] Freeze after suspend to RAM nvidia kernel 5.0.0.x

2019-09-12 Thread Gregor Darius
Public bug reported:

The computer is a notebook model PB71RD from Clevo. The problem happens in all
Clevo models:
P960E*, P970E*, P960R*, P970R*, P960RC*, P970RC, PB51E*, PB71E*, PB51R*, PB71R*
with mainboard identifiers (cat /sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id/board_name):
- P95_96_97Ex_Rx
- PB50_70EF_ED_EC
- PB50_70RF_RD_RC
- P9XXRC

and NVIDIA GPU (in this case: GeForce RTX 2060 and also on GeForce GTX
1660 Ti).

The problem only happens with kernel >= 5.0.0 and using the NVIDIA proprietary
driver.
On kernel 4.18 suspend works without problems on both GPU's (NVIDIA and Intel)
When using the Intel GPU or the nouveau driver then suspend works without
problems.
With kernel 4.18 suspend works without problems on both GPU's.

 | NVIDIA proprietary | Intel GPU | nouveau |
| kernel 4.18| works | works | works |
| kernel 5.0.0.x | no suspend | works | works |

I have tried different proprietary drivers, official Ubuntu Versions and
from PPA: 418 430.26 435.21

The notebook has a hybrid GPU configuration with NVIDIA and Intel GPUs.

The notebook goes into suspend when pressing the suspend button (Fn-
suspend).

When pressing the suspend button again, the power button light goes on
and nothing else happens.

 | power button | power LED | Battery LED | HD LED
Notebook on | on | on| on | sporadic
suspend | off | blinking | on | off
freeze after | on | on| on | off

from STR

The system is a Ubuntu 18.04.3

cat /etc/issue:
Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS \n \l

uname -a:
Linux test-notebook 5.0.0-27-generic #28~18.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Thu Aug 22 03:00:32
UTC 2019 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I first thought that it could be an ACPI-Problem. I reluctantly tried
acpi_osi=linux and all other OS's (as listed in: strings
/sys/firmware/acpi/tables/DSDT | grep -i windows | sort) for
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub

Also acpi_os_name=linux

Also tried to blacklist the nouveau driver.

Nothing helped.

Then i found out that a driver from pop-os launchpad worked. I posted a
possible solution on the button of this message.

LOGFILES:
I will attach now the logfiles as required on the Ubuntu Website
DebuggingKernelSuspend (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend)

dmesg.txt from: sh -c "sync && echo 1 > /sys/power/pm_trace && pm-
suspend"

I think the problem might be this:
[2.797119] Magic number: 2:1:0
[2.797623] memory memory48: hash matches

Answers to DebuggingKernelSuspend:
1. the system freezes when comming back from STR
2. suspend was activated by pressing: Fn+suspendButton
3. resume was activated by pressing: Fn+suspendButton
4. As required i installed the newest non-daily mainline kernel (v5.3-rc8)
now the notebook refuses to go into freeze at all, it just returns to the
desktop
As the fix described below works only on kernel 5.0.0.x i will continue with
information gathered with the kernel 5.0.0.27-generic

The logs are all attached to this message.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION:

The solution i found was a patch for nvidia-kernel-source-435

pop-os included the patch into nvidia-dkms-435:

diff --git a/nvidia/nv.c b/nvidia/nv.c
index b6dc6f3..ed250c8 100644
--- a/nvidia/nv.c
+++ b/nvidia/nv.c
@@ -4200,8 +4200,6 @@ nv_power_management(
 nv_kthread_q_stop(>bottom_half_q);

 nv_disable_pat_support();
-
-pci_save_state(nvl->pci_dev);
 break;
 }
 case NV_PM_ACTION_RESUME:

I testet it with different notebook models from Clevo with a different hardware
than mentioned above . It had no adverse effects so far.

Is this a possible solution? Could this be sent upstream? I would gladly
provide more information if necessary.

To verify, see if the guest OS kernel command-line option
"modprobe.blacklist=intel_powerclamp" resolves the problem.

2015-04-28 Thread Darius Damalakas
Same here. Just upgraded from 14.04 to 15.04, and now fan is not
turning off.Open NVidia xserver setings, GPU is set to Intel, but
fan still running. That wasnt happening back with 14.04 and
bumbleebee/optimus prime, sorry, can't remember which set-up i've used.

Would love to see a workaround solution, it's a shame this problem still
persists after several years - can't really use ubuntu like that.

[Bug 1224098] Re: xserver wont start after nvidia-prime installation

2013-10-23 Thread Darius Tumas
I had same problem in Kubuntu. nvidia-prime chages
/etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf greeter parameter to unity-greeter. This
change prevents lightdm starting. To fix it i had to change greeter back
to lightdm-kde-greeter.

[Bug 1041446] Re: GRUB hangs if a disk is connected

2013-05-27 Thread Darius
I tried a USB Ubuntu 12 installer and it refused to boot off it (the
same key worked in another system) so the BIOS seems really fussy.

Unfortunately it leaves me in an annoying position upgrade wise :(

I have upgraded the BIOS to the latest version (which was a pain, it
would not boot a FD image on a CD but the BIOS self updater would read
off a USB key..)

[Bug 1081311] [NEW] Unity does not match (stack) R Commander windows in the launcher

2012-11-20 Thread Darius Kulikauskas
Public bug reported:

The R Commander that is basically a GUI for R (see www.r-project.org,
I've installed it from USC) runs with the CLI in its background.
However, even though both of the instances have the same name in Unity's
launcher (it's R Commander), they are shown as two separate icons (not
stacked under one). I do not think this is the behavior that an average
user expects (I know I do not). I've attached a screenshot to show what
I mean.

[Bug 1041446] [NEW] GRUB hangs if a disk is connected

2012-08-24 Thread Darius
Public bug reported:

I have a Gigabyte G33M-DS2R (Core2Duo) system currently running 10.04.4.
I tried to boot a 12.04.1 (amd64 server) ISO and it hangs unless I
unplug the disk so the BIOS doesn't see it.

If I unplug the disk, then plug it while the kernel loads I can install
onto it but rebooting onto it hangs.

I see absolutely no debugging information though - the last message on
the screen is Updating DMI Pool Data which is from the BIOS.

I tried holding down shift as well as tapping escape while GRUB starts
but I didn't get given a menu.

Ctrl-alt-del does reset the PC so presume that it must happen very early
on.

[Bug 870874] Re: LDAP user with automounted nfs homedir cannot login

I've had the same problems on my setup, which is LDAP + NFS via fstab.
It works with no changes to the 90qt-a11y, nscd installed and the
Ubuntu-2D session. It immediatley fails when logging in with the regular
Unity session. For now I adjusted the lightdm.conf to log in to the 2D

[Bug 931877] Re: Task udevadm:X blocked at boot

2012-02-21 Thread Darius Shade
Update on the bug status, I tried using my hard drive with my other
computer and ubuntu booted perfectly, so the problem definitely lies
somewhere in the hardware/BIOS, though I have no idea how i would even
begin diagnosing the problem. Possibly the ACPI of my BIOS is broken,
though updating it does not seem to fix anything. Also, some possibly
relevant information is that my Windows installation is unable to shut
down. It will say shutting down, go to a black screen, and then sit
there, not cutting the power off, leading me to believe that my BIOS's
ACPI is definitely buggy/broken.

I tested the latest 3.3-rc3-precise kernel, but the same hanging issue
still exists. However it seems to be no longer related to udev, but to
swapper and kworker (see attached). 1 message is shown about swapper
hanging, and another 5 or 6 are about kworker, all hanging the machine
for the exact same as the last kernel, and the acpi=off boot argument
still 'fixes' the problem and allows for a normal boot, but again not
having acpi on a laptop isn't good. I have found other bugs reporting
the same task * blocked for more than 120 seconds, however none of
them seem to be related to the boot process and therefore i am unable to
find a bug that this might be a duplicate of.

[Bug 931877] [NEW] Task udevadm:X blocked at boot

2012-02-13 Thread Darius Shade
Public bug reported:

The 3.0.0-16 kernel is unable to boot due to udevadm hanging. I'm dual
booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.10 on my laptop, but when i try to boot
ubuntu, it drops to BusyBox complaining about giving up waiting on the
root device. ls /dev shows that the device file for my hard drive is not
there. Adding rootdelay=300 to the boot arguments allows my hard drive
to be seen after approximately 4 minutes and the boot can continue fine.
An inspection of /var/log/syslog shows that the udevadm task is being
blocked at boot for a long time (see attachment). It seems to be
related to ACPI as acpi=off allows me to boot normally, however any
other acpi boot options, such as acpi=ht, acpi=noirq, and so forth do
not fix the problem, and udevadm still hangs.

I'm not running the usual kernel for 10.04. I'm running 2.6.38, because
lirc wasn't working with the standard kernel.

However, I suspect that the fact that I'm using a non-default kernel is the
reason that the virtualbox kernel modules
won't build.

[Bug 875388] Re: Unity indicator menus disappear right after appearing when you click on them

2011-10-22 Thread Darius Kulikauskas
The bug is reproducible: all you need is to boot your PC with TwinView
setup (still have to check if it applies to simply enabling TwinView
without a reboot). I do not know if this happens on other video cards
but nVidia (with proprietary drivers). After disabling the secondary
monitor panel behavior becomes normal.

[Bug 874885] [NEW] Unity panel service uses 100% of CPU, panel applet menus become empty and transparent

2011-10-15 Thread Darius Kulikauskas
Public bug reported:

Unity panel service unexpectedly starts using 100% of CPU while panel
applet menus become empty and transparent (could not take screen capture
because the system was not usable). I don't know what causes this to
happen as it happened to my only twice so far, but it might be something
with LibreOffice Writer as I was using it both times (I don't have
LibreOffice global-menu).

After some time CPU usage drops and system becomes usable.

[Bug 873717] [NEW] Unity launcher fails to group R Commander window icons into one entry on the unity bar

2011-10-13 Thread Darius Kulikauskas
Public bug reported:

I don't know if this should be a Unity bug. If you have R Commander
installed on your system, you will notice that starting it will make two
entries in unity panel. The program does start two windows: one for GUI
and one for Command line behind the scenes. However, the one for the
GUI does not even have an icon (question mark appears instead). For me
it feels natural that it should be grouped into one entry in the panel.

The bug is easily reproduced: you just have to install R Commander from
USC and start it.

[Bug 782778] [NEW] indicator-weather does not refresh automatically after resuming from suspend

2011-05-14 Thread Darius Kulikauskas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-weather

I've used indicator-weather from Ubuntu Software Center for some time
now and found one easily reproducible and annoying bug: the indicator
does not refresh automatically if you suspend with it running and resume
from suspend. It just stands in the panel with the last available data
it received prior going to suspend. By the way, indicator-weather
returns to normal automatic refresh cycle if you refresh it manually.

I am on Wi-Fi connection to the Internet so you are not immediately
connected after you resume from suspend. I assume it might be one of the
important conditions for the bug to occur as I have not tested for the
presence of this bug on wired connection.

Steps to reproduce the bug:
1. Run indicator-weather or have it running from startup.
2. Be connected to the Internet (Wi-Fi) so the indicator is able to get new
weather data.
3. Suspend.
4. Return from suspend.
5. As the time passes indicator-weather does not refresh automatically but it
should (in my case every 15 minutes).

Sorry, Sebastien Bacher, but the bug have not occured to me since I

However, I, like Christian Holschuh, also have indicator-weather

[Bug 778979] Re: Italic Greek letters have problems being rendered with elements in power and circumflex

2011-05-08 Thread Darius Kulikauskas
Thank you for the answer and useful tips. The solution works perfectly
for circumflex, but the symbols in power still look awkward as they are
only shifted in height but not in width. I've attached a screenshot of
what the suggested settings helped me achieve with the test ODT file.

Is the settings causing circumflex invisible specific to my system or is
it a default behavior? If it is default, I guess it should be altered so
an average user would not have issues with iGreek symbols.

Symbols in power, in my opinion, still need some positioning fixing as
they look awkward (and still even touches their base).

[Bug 778979] [NEW] Italic Greek letters have problems being rendered with elements in power and circumflex

2011-05-07 Thread Darius Kulikauskas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libreoffice

After upgrade from Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit to Ubuntu 11.04 64-bit I have
noticed that all of my previous thesis work had all of the Greek symbols
changed from italic to no italic. I suppose that happened because there
was iGreek character set introduced. With a bit of frustration I changed
all of the parameters to italic. However, my problems did not end there.
I've noticed that some iGreek letters are wrongly rendered when they
have circumflex on them (e. g. {hat %ilambda}) or elements in power (e.
g. {%itheta^(b)}). In the first case, circumflex is not visible at all
or only the very bottom of it can be seen in the print or PDF export of
the document. In the second case elements in power intersect with the
symbol.

The problem can be fixed with a workaround like inserting ~ or `
symbols to make elements not intersect each other or taking an iGreek
letter to an empty (e. g. {^{{}}^{}}) power to make circumflex
visible.

I have attached an ODT document with example for everyone to see what I
mean. I've also attached pictures of what I mean.

[Bug 774071] [NEW] Indicator-datetime-service renders 100% CPU usage

2011-04-30 Thread Darius Kulikauskas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-datetime

On my laptop indicator-datetime-service occasionally make my CPU to
use 100% of its resources. It does not happen every time I log in to
Ubuntu, but when it happens, it stays hogging 100% of CPU until I kill
the process. If it helps, I've noticed in System Monitor that there
are two instances of indicator-datetime-service running, but only one
of them is hogging recourses. So far I was unable to determine after
what actions/events this bug pups up.

[Bug 696138] [NEW] Previously undated photos does not appear under events section after date assigning

2010-12-31 Thread Darius Kulikauskas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: shotwell

If I import scanned pictures (from analog photo camera) using File
Import From Folder... the pictures appear at the very bottom of all the
photos that are currently in Shotwell's database because they are
naturally undated (no exif information about exposure date). However, I
usually assign dates to such pictures manually (Photo Adjust Date and
Time...). After the procedure photos will appear in the correct
position chronologically when browsing through all pictures currently in
the database (when Pictures is selected in the left pane).

What is not working - the entries under Events section in the left
pane is not being created. I do not know if this is the intended
behavior of the application, but it makes user experience a bit less
great as one intuitively would expect Events to encompass even those
events that are created manually.

Steps to reproduce the bug:
1. Import pictures with no exif information about exposure date.
2. Manually set picture date and time using Photo Adjust Date and Time
3. Correct dates are not created under Events list in the left pane.

[Bug 669465] [NEW] Evolution's e-addressbook-factory process renders CPU usage 100%

2010-11-01 Thread Darius Kulikauskas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution-data-server

I have set-up Evolution email client to access my Gmail and UbuntuOne
address books. However, on some occasions e-addressbook-factory starts
using 100% of CPU. It has happened to me more than ten times, but I
still cannot tell what exactly causes the book to occur. It may be
something with Gmail address book and UbuntuOne address book accessed at
the same time. BTW, this bug seems to occur more often after Ubuntu
resumes from suspend. Killing the process, apparently, helps, as it is
restarted and works normal.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.10
Package: evolution-data-server 2.30.3-2ubuntu2
ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.35-22.35-generic 2.6.35.4
Uname: Linux 2.6.35-22-generic x86_64
NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia
Architecture: amd64
Date: Mon Nov 1 16:06:27 2010
ExecutablePath: /usr/lib/evolution/e-addressbook-factory
InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat - Release amd64 (20101007)
SourcePackage: evolution-data-server

[Bug 629258] Re: Battery life estimation never comes around

2010-10-24 Thread Darius Kulikauskas
@João Gomes: you are absolutely right. ;) This is a bug about the
forever estimating state of battery applet indicator. As far as I am
concerned, even the icon represents the correct state of the battery
charge (e. g. gets 'emptier' when battery discharges), only the text
when I click on it does not show the level of charge and states
estimating permanently.

[Bug 434601] Re: needs to store the language of the cache

I found that running the following command fixed the problem:

sudo /usr/share/software-center/update-software-center

[Bug 434601] Re: needs to store the language of the cache

2010-10-20 Thread Darius Kulikauskas
I know it is only a cosmetic bug, but it annoys me. It would be great if
Ubuntu Software Center respected locale settings...

Is there any real progress on fixing this bug? :)

[Bug 390608] Re: trash icon always full

2010-10-16 Thread Darius Kulikauskas
I can confirm this on Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit and I remember it happening on
Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit (just did not bother to report it). It is
reproducible: it happens after Empty Trash procedure (when selected
from the icon context menu on the panel), but not always.

BTW, it is completely reproducible for me: just click on any of the
launchers in panel and then bug happens when you click on any of the
indicator-applet items.

[Bug 660855] [NEW] Previously launched launcher gets highlighted when you click on one of the indicator applets

2010-10-14 Thread Darius Kulikauskas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-applet

If you've launched any of the applications using a panel launcher, than
anytime you click on one of the indicator applets, it gets highlighted.
Maybe it's not a bug, but it is annoying and definitely not eye-
pleasing.

I've attached a screenshot of the bug.
