[Bug 1474855] [NEW] Error "Unable to satisfy all constraints on the partition" with three primary Windows partitions

2015-07-15 Thread der_vegi
Public bug reported:

I am just installing Ubuntu 15.04.2 (amd64) in parallel on a Dell
computer. The computer has a Dell-whatevertool-partition (primary) and
two more primary System partitions used by Windows 7. When I selected
the default option to install Ubuntu in parallel, I got the "Error!!!"
(3 exclamation marks?!) "unable to satisfy all constraints on the
partition", though there was already enough free space at the end of the
disk. I had to go the manual way, creating an extended partition etc.
which then worked smoothly.

This could, however, be a showstopper for a less experienced user.

[Bug 1159140] Re: Asus 1225C crashes constantly with (L)Ubuntu 13.04

2013-12-03 Thread der_vegi
Sorry, I cannot test that computer any more, as I got rid of it. I was
tired of fighting with the bad linux support and - additionally - the
bad quality of the hardware itself.

[Bug 1132584] Re: cedarview-drm kernel module fails to build on kernels > 3.2.x [error: implicit declaration of function 'do_mmap']

2013-08-20 Thread der_vegi
That method worked for me downgrading from 12.04.2 to the 3.2 kernel:
http://askubuntu.com/a/267782 I have now successfully installed the
binary blob driver and can finally watch videos with vlc, again. *g

Yeah, the netbook did initially work with the Ubuntu version Asus had
preinstalled. But they a) do not deliver a recovery medium and b) after
a repair - change of harddisk - I got the computer back from Asus with
an unformatted harddisk and the comment from the support, that I should
just download Ubuntu, as they will not provide any download or medium.
Still, it is indeed odd to "certify" such hardware.

Daniel, your comment "Simply buying something because of the brand/logo
in it is a bad idea, whether it's a computer or a car." is very true...
*g The thing is, that I was stupid enough to trust the brand/logo
"Ubuntu certified" on my Asus EEPC 1225C, which came with Ubuntu
preinstalled. :(

The recommendation to "sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-lts-precise
sudo apt-get purge xserver-xorg-lts-quantal xserver-xorg-lts-raring
linux-generic-lts-quantal linux-generic-lts-raring" resulted for me (starting
from 12.04.2 i386) in a system that did not load X any more, so be cautious
with it! I had to reinstall the lts-raring stuff, to get my system working
again and I am still trying to figure out, what exactly to uninstall and
install to get kernel 3.2 with xorg working...

[Bug 1159140] Re: Asus 1225C crashes constantly with (L)Ubuntu 13.04

2013-05-03 Thread der_vegi
And again, still present in Ubuntu 13.04 final (amd64): The computer
booted flawlessly 6 times into the livecd, but when shutting down the
last time, it froze stilly being in Unity. The next two times, it
crashed already during boot.

This is something, I already realized the last times: When the computer
crashes once, the probability is much higher, that it crashes the next
boot, as well. Booting into Lubuntu 12.10 worked without a problem.

Maybe this is related to the Intel graphics driver? This is obviously
still not working properly in 13.04, as Unity is incredibly slow, making
the computer practically unusable with this desktop.

[Bug 1159140] Re: Asus 1225C crashes constantly with (L)Ubuntu 13.04

2013-03-29 Thread der_vegi
Okay, I installed the mainline build kernel 3.9-rc4 in the Ubuntu 12.10 running
on that machine. This works, but so does the kernel 3.8.0.15.30 from the raring
repositories.
Then, I tried the daily-live 20130328 again: Still the same. The first two
tries, the Asus 1225C hang during boot, the third time I got a desktop, but
then it instantly froze. The same live-usb works flawlessly on my other
computer.

So maybe this is not a kernel-only issue? Is there any way, I can do
further tests without having to install the daily-live on my system? I
don't want to overwrite my current installation...

[Bug 1159140] [NEW] Asus 1225C crashes constantly with (L)Ubuntu 13.04

2013-03-23 Thread der_vegi
Public bug reported:

I have a problem with the Asus 1225C and several variants of Ubuntu
13.04 (and I have to hurry up writing this, before it crashes again):
Daily-live images (last one tested was from two days ago) as well as
Lubuntu 13.04 Beta1 crash during boot from USB in 3 out of 4 tries: I
get the very simple Grub menu and when I select "Try...", the screen
turns black for a while without the possibility to set language etc.
After a while, the startup screen for (L)Ubuntu shows. But most of the
time (3 out of 4), the moving dots will stop at some point and the
computer freezes. No chance to switch to tty1 or anything. When I do
finally get into X, chances are good, that it crashes within the next 5
minutes, at least for Ubuntu with Unity. Ubuntu 12.04 and 12.10 run
stable on this machine (though Unity is incredibly slow in 12.10 due to
lacking graphics acceleration).

I think this is a graphics problem of the "Intel Corporation Atom
Processor D2xxx/N2xxx Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)" at the
kernel level. Any chance that I can provide any error logs from my
crashing liveusb?

[Bug 1069671] Re: no print queues displayed in pure client mode

2012-12-01 Thread der_vegi
It looks like the reason for this bug has been found upstream in the bug
report https://www.cups.org/str.php?L4231 mentioned above. CUPS 1.6.1
uses IPP 2.0 by default failing to talk to older CUPS servers. You can
now also find a workaround-patch there.

Interestingly, I could not reproduce the error with openSUSE 11.3:
Printing a specific file (evince, 2 pages per sheet, duplex short side)
from a computer with SUSE installed worked, sending the same file with
the same options via the same CUPS-server from Ubuntu 12.04 resulted in
the "broken pipe" error.

The file is not big, only 60 kB. Unfortunately, I cannot attach the file, as it

[Bug 246310] Re: Broken Pipe Error with Xerox Printer

2012-08-13 Thread der_vegi
I have a very similar problem with a "UTAX CLP 3726" printer, that I
access via a CUPS server. It works for some printing jobs, but suddenly
will fail. Then it will reject jobs and its CUPS status page says
"Unable to write print data: Broken pipe". Printing only starts working
again after my network administrator has restarted the printer.

Ubuntu-versions that make this printer crash: 11.10 and 12.04. I can
print on other printers via this CUPS server without problems, though.

[Bug 997004] [NEW] Kile complains about "too long lines"

2012-05-09 Thread der_vegi
Public bug reported:

When I open files with longer blocks of text, kile reports an error "The
file [...].bib/.tex was opened and contained too long lines (more than 1
024 characters). Too long lines were wrapped and the document is set to
read-only mode, as saving will modify its content." Kile then breaks
these longer blocks of text in an inconvenient way, sometimes in the
middle of commands ( "\" break "cite") or in the middle of formulas.

Kile also complains about too long .bib files.

Sample "too long" .tex file attached.

This is a regression introduced by the upgrade from kile version
2.1.0-1ubuntu1 to 2.1.0-1ubuntu2.

2012-05-09 Thread der_vegi
Okay, this seems to be related to project files. Creating a normal file
without project does not invoke the bug. To do this, you just have to
create a kile-project, add a .tex file and then close kile. => Crash.

I will report the issue with the "too long lines" in a different bug.

Same here, kile crashes when closing. This just started after my upgrade

I don't know if this is maybe related to this bug: When I start kile, it
directly opens the previous project. After the upgrade to 12.04, I
suddenly get the error "The file [...].bib/.tex was opened and contained
too long lines (more than 1 024 characters). Too long lines were wrapped
and the document is set to read-only mode, as saving will modify its
content." This error appears for the main .tex file as well as my .bib
file.

[Bug 887177] Re: upstream 2.1.1 is released

2011-11-22 Thread der_vegi
This should rather be a question (see answers.launchpad.net) than a bug.

I doubt that Spyder will be backported to 11.10 so you a) wait until
12.04 or b) try some manual update via external repo or Debian which
always brings the risk of an unstable system and/or some conflicts.

[Bug 575812] Re: revtex4-1 should be upgraded to bugfix release on 3/15/2010

2011-06-02 Thread der_vegi
The natbib problem I had was not related to bug 578693. Natbib in Natty
works together with the Revtex-version that comes with Natty. But when I
install the .deb file and use natbib, it requests a newer version of
natbib as mentioned in the Debian bug. Manually installing the newest
natbib solved my problem.

Btw: Shouldn't this bug be related to texlive-publishers instead of
texlive-extra?

[Bug 641566] [NEW] Microphone input gets scrambled

2010-09-17 Thread der_vegi
Public bug reported:

When I talk into my external microphone, the input gets scrambled: Some
parts get completely lost, other parts are played back at higher speed.
This makes e.g. pidgin voice call unusable. This is a regression, that
is already present in Lucid and still in Maverick daily-live of today
(09-17). Works in Karmic.

Any more information, I can provide?

[Bug 551790] Re: lucid update-grub wrong root=UUID=

2010-04-08 Thread der_vegi
Yeah, same problem with all Lucid versions up to Beta 1 now. I also have
a separate /boot partition (ext2), karmic on /dev/sda5 and and lucid on
/dev/sda8 . Whenever I update grub.cfg via some kernel update in Lucid,
Lucids's UUID is written to all entries in grub.cfg which makes Karmic
not bootable any more. I manually have to revert the changes. Seems to
be similar to bug 392836 or bug 462961, but they're marked as fixed...

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 462961 ***

I don't think, this bug is fixed. I now have a dual-boot Karmic and
Lucid (Beta 1) with a separate /boot partition. Whenever I upgrade my
kernel in Lucid grub.cfg is updated and the wrong uuid is set in
Karmic's entry of 'root=UUID=': It is always changed to the uuid of
Lucid. To be able to boot into Karmic, I have to manually revert this
change.

[Bug 533829] [NEW] Improper import of configuration file

2010-03-07 Thread der_vegi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager-openvpn

When I import the attached configuration file, the key direction under
'Advanced -> TLS authentication' is not imported properly: Instead of
'1' it is set to '0' which breaks the VPN connection. This works
properly in Karmic with the same configuration file.

The error I get is:

[Bug 504197] [NEW] When using wxWidgets some buttons in the plot window don't work

2010-01-07 Thread der_vegi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: octave3.2

When I use Octave with wxWidgets (added 'setenv("GNUTERM","wxt")' in
/usr/share/octave/3.2.2/m/startup/octaverc) and do a plot, I get the
proper wxWidgets gnuplot window. But only the buttons 'Help',
'Configuration' and the 'Copy to Clipboard' work, the others like
'Toggle Grid' appear but have no effect when clicking on them. Also,
right-clicking on the plot does not invoke anything. When I start
gnuplot directly, everything works.

[Bug 502955] [NEW] Keyboard layout sometimes used, sometimes not

2010-01-04 Thread der_vegi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: texmaker

I have a German installation (and German keyboard) of Ubuntu 9.10, but I
use the keyboard layout 'USA alternatvie international'. This works fine
in all applications except texmaker. The option 'separate layout for
each window' in system -> keyboard settings is deactivated.

When I start texmaker, and want to type for example 'ä', I directly get
¨ wihtout having the chance to put the dots over the a. Clicking a menu
item (e.g. help -> about) or switching to another window and then back
to texmaker, fixes this, I can use the layout as I do in all other
windows. But as soon as I save the document with strg + s or by clicking
save, the wrong setting is there again.

Any more information I can provide?

[Bug 502134] [NEW] Octave should use GNUTERM=wxt by default

2010-01-01 Thread der_vegi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: octave3.2

When Gnuplot is started directly from the terminal it uses terminal type
wxt by default, which gives you extra options like zooming into a plot
etc. But when Gnuplot is started by Octave for plotting, terminal type
x11 is used, resulting in less functionality. One can overcome this by
running 'export GNUTERM=wxt' before starting Octave, but it would be
nicer if Octave used terminal type wxt by default.

[Bug 449430] [NEW] [Dell Inspiron 1501] hibernate/resume failure

2009-10-12 Thread der_vegi
Public bug reported:

Using Karmic daily-live 2009-10-09 with all updates applied.

This already happened twice for me: Having the power cable plugged in, I
closed the laptop lid. Opening it after some time again, my machine was
still on, but then started to go to suspend-to-RAM. Then I removed the
power cable and plugged it in again. Some seconds later, the machine
seemed to try to go to suspend-to-disk: The screen became blurry orange
not showing anything and the harddisk was working. After some time, it
switched off. But rebooting, Karmic did just a normal boot, not trying
to recover the old session.

I did not change any power management settings.

[Bug 392836] Re: grub not adding correct uuid to grub.cfg

2009-10-02 Thread der_vegi
You have to change the UUID in 'root=UUID=89c07ebd-cc8e-4d65-be8d-
e4db7fbfef06 ro quiet splash' to match your Jaunty's UUID. But every
time, your kernel in Karmic gets updated and the grub.cfg is updated as
well, this setting gets lost and is overwritten with Karmic's UUID.

[Bug 339620] Re: Cannot use the first configured openvpn connection until re-login

2009-10-02 Thread der_vegi
Unfortunately, it does not seem to be fixed. Did a new install of Karmic
Beta amd64 and tried to connect over wireless to this (http://www.cms
.hu-berlin.de/dl/netze/vpn/openvpn/Ubuntu9.04/ unfortunately only in
German) network via openvpn. First, I got the above mentioned "wrong VPN
secrets" message, but even now, after reboot, I cannot connect because
"vpn service could not be started". But that might be another problem.
Adding output of "tail -f /var/log/syslog" when trying to connect the
first time.

[Bug 339620] Re: Cannot use the first configured openvpn connection until re-login

2009-09-29 Thread der_vegi
Okay, with network-manager 0.8~a~git.20090923t064445.b20cef2-0ubuntu1
from a daily-live 2009-09-28 running on a USB-stick, it works. When Beta
is out, I will do an installation on my hd and check again.

[Bug 434361] Re: gdm sometimes fails to switch to VT7 after new upstart merge

2009-09-28 Thread der_vegi
I have a similar problem to the one Harry has (comment #7): When I boot up
Karmic (Alpha 6 and daily-live 2009-09-28), everything goes fine, but instead
of gdm showing up, I get a black screen. When I hit any key, I see tty1. Not
logging in, just pressing Control+Alt+F7 starts gdm and I can normally login
without a problem. My graphics card is an Ati RS482 [Radeon Xpress 200M], no
proprietary driver.
Any more information, I can provide?

2009-09-23 Thread der_vegi
Same here, Karmic Alpha 6. I didn't have any problems/errors intalling
Karmic, but in the grub.cfg the uuid for Jaunty was set to Karmic's
uuid. When I updated Karmic today, the manually corrected entry was
overwritten with the wrong uuid again.

[Bug 395710] Re: Opening "Places/Computer" nautilus crash with Segmentation fault

2009-07-07 Thread der_vegi
I also have the problem here with ubuntuone-client

It only happens when I connect to the sftp server (a debian system) I
have in my nautilus-bookmarks: As soon as the connection is established
and nautilus opens the directory, it crashes.

[Bug 391551] Re: package openssh-server 1:5.1p1-5ubuntu1 failed to install: sub process post-installation script returned error code 1

2009-06-24 Thread der_vegi
Removing /etc/gshadow.lock manually and running 'sudo /usr/sbin/useradd
-d /var/run/sshd -g nogroup -s /usr/sbin/nologin -u 112 sshd' resolved
this. But I don't know, why it was locked, this system was set up
yesterday, pretty much a stock configuration...
