[Bug 2065076] Re: nvidia failure to resume from suspend; kernel fallback broken

2024-06-16 Thread dhenry
I have the same issue with GTX 980M. Resume works sometimes, but often fails as
described (> 50% failure).
I'm currently running the 23.10 kernel to avoid this issue.

Note that with previous Ubuntu versions (like 23.10), this issue (at
least, similar) could happen, but very rarely (I got it maybe 2-3 times
over a year).

As if there where some race conditions triggering the issue that did
rarely occur with older kernels, but very often with recent ones.

I tried without nvidia proprietary driver (using nouveau): no resume
freeze. However, the nouveau support has other issues like not being
able to control brightness (and brightness is set to 1% after resume).

[Bug 1946303] Re: No video after wake from S3 due to Nvidia driver crash

2024-05-10 Thread dhenry
After upgrading to 24.04 with NVidia driver 550, I still have the issue.

Disabling nvidia-hibernate, nvidia-resume and nvidia-suspend services is
still the workaround that fixes suspend/resume for me.

It just happened to me today on 22.04 and the 510 driver (after an
automatic upgrade?).

No way to boot my computer, even in recovery mode I got this issue...
I'm currently running from a live USB to write this post.

No fix for me.

I installed all updates, reenabled the suspend services, rebooted and
tried a suspend/resume, but it still failed to resume.

After a hard reboot, I disabled the suspend services, and suspend/resume
works again for me.

A workaround I found is to disable nvidia-resume and nvidia-suspend
services:

systemctl disable nvidia-hibernate.service nvidia-resume.service nvidia-
suspend.service

Suspend/resume works again after that.

[Bug 1970088] [NEW] Resume fail after suspend with NVIDIA driver on Ubuntu 22.04

2022-04-24 Thread dhenry
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from 21.10 to 22.04, the suspend/resume stopped working
on my laptop with an NVIDIA discrete card.

The computer goes in sleep mode, but when resuming, the screen remain
black.

The issue happens with both NVIDIA driver 470 and 510. Previously, I was
running the 470 because I use MATE and there was a bug with
Xorg/MATE/NVIDIA 510, so I don't know how it behave in Ubuntu 21.10 and
NVIDIA driver 510.

I could not try with an older kernel on Ubuntu 22.04, because DKMS
refused to build the driver for older kernels.

The dmesg/kern.log contains a backtrace:

Mo [french] = Mega octets [french] = Mega Bytes [english]

There's already a suggestion for 261, and I added a new one for 281, but
I don't know if/when it will be reviewed. The current suggestions for
261 have been added since 2008 and 2011!

[Bug 1828454] [NEW] i18n: Wrong french translation of "Mbits/s" as "Mo/s"

2019-05-09 Thread dhenry
Public bug reported:

When running "nmcli device wifi", the list of avalaible SSID appears
with their rate.

In english (LANG=C), the rate unit is "Mbit/s".
In french (LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8), it has been translated to "Mo/s", which means
"MBytes/s"!

Assuming the original (english) unit is correct, then it should stay
"Mbit/s" in french.

[Bug 1818406] Re: gnat-gps fails to launch built binaries

2019-03-04 Thread dhenry
Attached is an updated version of the python_2_to_3.diff (from gnat-
gps-17.0.2017 deb) that should fix this issue.

I did not test rebuilding the package with this patch (I encounter some
dependencies issues hard to install without breaking things in my
current environment), but since the fix is trivial (one line to change,
line 1977), I modified directly the patch file by hand.

[Bug 1818406] Re: gnat-gps fails to launch built binaries

2019-03-04 Thread dhenry
Ok, I found what's the problem.

In the file /usr/share/gps/support/ui/workflows/__init__.py, line 248
(gnat-gps 17.0.2017-1ubuntu1 from cosmic):

el = next (gen.next)

shall be:

el = next (gen)

And then it works.

This line has been modified by the python_2_to_3.diff deb patch during
packaging. This is where the bug were introduced.
Note that the original line (before patch) was:

el = gen.next()

and seems to work fine too for me.

I'm not a python expert, so I don't know why this line had to be
patched, and which version shall be used between next(gen) and
gen.next().

In Ubuntu 18.10 (and also 19.04 daily of 2019-03-03), the GNAT
Programming Studio IDE (gnat-gps) fails to launch binaries built by a
project with the "Build & run" button in the menu bar.

The Messages view only outputs:

Uncaught exception in workflows:
TypeError: method-wrapper object is not an iterator

In GPS log file (~/.gps/log.txt), I can see:

[ACTIONS] Entering GPS.Kernel.Actions.Execute_Action:gps-kernel-actions.adb:466
Execute action Build & Run Number 1 1 times synchronous=FALSE (13:12:12.756)
[WORKFLOW] Unexpected exception in workflow: method-wrapper object is not an
iterator (13:12:12.764)
   [TESTSUITE.EXCEPTIONS] Uncaught exception in workflows:

[ACTIONS] Leaving GPS.Kernel.Actions.Execute_Action:gps-kernel-actions.adb:466
(13:12:12.766)

I get a similar error for "Build & Debug" button action.

Launching from menu "Build -> Run -> " works.
GPS binary downloaded from AdaCore also works fine.
gnat-gps in Ubuntu 18.04 works.

[Bug 1641086] [NEW] Battery icon in systray/mate-panel has incorrect size in Ambiant-MATE

2016-11-11 Thread dhenry
Public bug reported:

In Ambiant-MATE theme (and maybe other similar themes), the battery
status icon, present in the mate-indicator-applet, has incorrect size to
be properly drawn in the systray (and also in contextual menu).

The battery icon set have different width and height (for example,
32x24), and that results in a poor rendering where icon seems to be
vertically aligned on the top instead of being vertically centered.

The issue appeared in Ubuntu MATE 16.10 and was not present in Ubuntu MATE
16.04.
I think this was caused by the GTK2 -> GTK3 migration for mate-panel & applets.

Note that I'm not sure if it should be considered a theme issue or a
mate regression.

[Bug 1518473] Re: /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness is broken

2016-06-18 Thread dhenry
Same issue with GTX 980M on Ubuntu 16.04, even with latest NVIDIA
drivers (367.27).

I described this on NVIDIA forums:
https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/942337/linux/backlight-brightness-not-hooked-to-acpi-events-ubuntu-16-04-/

I manually fixed it by created an acpid event handler, however in my
solution, it only works when changing the brightness with the Fn-keys,
but not by changing /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness value.

Link Dupont's fix works better (but I didn't use
video.use_native_backlight=1 on GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX as he said). By the
way, the link to his solution is dead. This one works: http://sub-
pop.net/post/fedora-23-on-system76-oryx-pro/

[Bug 1591620] [NEW] Synaptic can't install a package if /var/cache/apt/archives does not exist

2016-06-12 Thread dhenry
Public bug reported:

My /var/cache/apt/archives directory is mounted as a tmpfs partition,
therefore after a fresh boot, the directory is empty.

In such a situation, synaptic fails to install any package with the
following error:

E: Could not open lock file /var/cache/apt/archives/lock - open (2: No such
file or directory)
E: Could not open file descriptor -1
E: Unable to lock the download directory

Workaround to repair synaptic for current session:

sudo mkdir -p /var/cache/apt/archives/partial
sudo touch /var/cache/apt/archives/lock
sudo chmod 640 /var/cache/apt/archives/lock

synaptic should silently create those files if they are missing, instead
of failing, like apt does.

[Bug 1535470] Re: Backlight brightness keys not working

2016-06-07 Thread dhenry
Well, the main purpose of my comment was to give some hints to Ian with
his laptop, in case it could help him, because we have some common
hardware parts...

I can fill a new bug for my case, but what do you mean by "Ubuntu repository
kernel"?
Currently, I'm running the 4.6 kernel from ~kernel-ppa/mainline/, which is also
(in some way) an Ubuntu repository, isn't it?
Should I switch back to the standard 4.4 kernel from main repository in order
to fill my bug?

[Bug 1535470] Re: Backlight brightness keys not working

2016-06-06 Thread dhenry
I have a different Clevo model (P751DM-G) but with same issue: the
backlight Fn-keys doesn't work neither out of the box, nor with a kernel
4.6. Well, in fact, they work until I suspend/resume, and then they no
longer work. Looking at acpi_listen, I noticed that after first
suspend/resume cycle, some ACPI events where no longer triggered (like
the backlight Fn-keys, but also the lid close!).

I found a fix by loading a clevo-wmi driver. There are several clevo-wmi
drivers on the internet (various attempts to write a driver for it...). For my
laptop, I use:
* https://bitbucket.org/lynthium/clevo-xsm-wmi (it aims at supporting all Clevo
models)

Since the clevo-xsm-wmi driver doesn't seem to handle your P65 model, you may
need to try some other ones, like this one:
* https://github.com/gamaral/clevo-wmi
Maybe it could help for you too.

To be honest, I have no idea why it did fix my backlight fn-keys, as
those drivers are supposed to handle different features (keyboard
backlight, rfkill switch, hw monitoring). Nevertheless, if I unload the
module, then the issue happen again.

Note that this workaround fixes the Fn-keys: the backlight popup notification
appears and I can increase/decrease value, however it has no effect on the
screen. This is just ACPI event that has been fixed.
In order to really adjust LCD backlight, I have to play with nvidia-settings
(with proprietary driver). Example, to set backlight brightness at 50%:

nvidia-settings -n -a BacklightBrightness=50

Some glue is still missing to link ACPI events with nvidia-settings.

[Bug 1447838] Re: Boot fails: black screen after GRUB, no login

2015-05-17 Thread dhenry
I have very similar symptoms, but I don't have nvidia graphics in my
computer. I have an i945GM gpu. Also, the issue occurs when booting
kernel 3.19.0-17, but not with 3.19.0-15 or 3.19.0-16, neither with
4.0.2 from kernel ppa.

When booting in failsafe mode and resuming to normal boot, Xorg will
start with the vesa driver (hence the wrong screen resolution).

I don't know if it's the same issue as the one reported here.

[Bug 1247362] [NEW] notification-daemon conflicts with notify-osd when running GNOME Flashback

2013-11-02 Thread dhenry
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 13.10, there is a conflict between notification-daemon and
notify-osd when running a GNOME Flashback session.

The following two issues are correlated:

1) When a notification arise, there is a mix of GNOME 3-like and Ubuntu
notification styles (graphically). It can be easily reproduced with the
notify-send command.

2) The events like volume up/down/mute no longer shows a notification.
To reproduce, just use the keyboard's volume buttons, or scroll on the
sound indicator in the gnome panel.

After some investigation, I found that killing the process /usr/lib
/notification-daemon/notification-daemon fixes the problem. After that,
the notifications uses only the Ubuntu's style and the volume
up/down/mute notifications appears again.

The gnome-session-flashback 3.6.2 package depends on the notification-
daemon 0.7.6 package, which autostarts the notification-daemon process
when running a GNOME Flashback session. I could manage to disable it by
editing the file /etc/xdg/autostart/notification-daemon.desktop. As a
workaround, I changed the line:

AutostartCondition=GNOME3 unless-session gnome

To:

AutostartCondition=false

Something should be done so that GNOME Flashback uses only one
notification system, either Ubuntu one or notification-daemon, but not
both at the same time. Moreover, if it is decided to use notification-
daemon, the missing notifications mentioned above (volume...) should be
fixed.

2013-06-29 Thread dhenry
@Sam in reply to #61: I removed compiz-experimental and installed your
ppa instead, but unfortunately it doesn't fix it.

Here is how I reproduce it (I'm running Gnome 3 in fallback mode, but
gnome-panel):
1) Open gedit, and maximize it
2) Close gedit (it will remember it was maximized)
3) Open gedit: it opens maximized
4) Try to use titlebar buttons: here it fails, the window just lose focus...

Of course, steps 1-2 are only if gedit doesn't already open maximized.

[Bug 1158267] Re: broken (click-trhough) window decoration on some maximized windows

This is quite annoying because if you have a titlebar-deffective window
on top of a maximized window which has a working title bar, the close
action will go to the later instead of the visible one... and you will
accidentally close the wrong window/application. It offen happens to me
with the web browser :-/

This issue has serious negative effects on user experience.

[Bug 1088223] [NEW] xchat-gnome shows the join-channel dialog when network connection goes up

2012-12-09 Thread dhenry
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 12.10, when xchat-gnome is running and the network connection is
lost, xchat-gnome automatically disconnects from server.
When the network connection goes up again, xchat-gnome automatically reconnects
to all servers, but then pop ups the join channel dialog (this is no
expected). This should be a simple reconnect operation, not a join server,
chose a channel action. Moreover, it is quite annoying because once connected,
this popup dialog takes the focus over all other applications.

In Ubuntu 11.04, the behaviour was correct.

How ot reproduce:

1) Run xchat-gnome
2) Connect to a server, join any channel
3) Disable networking: you should see xchat-gnome disconnecting
4) Enable networking: once the connection is up, xchat-gnome reconnects to the
server, and once connected it show the join channel dialog.

He says that when he tries to connect to his accounts, Empathy doesn't

network error message, but we don't know which one exactly. He adds he's
connected to Internet by an Orange Box (ADSL modem), using wired
connection (probably ethernet) and with a switch (probably ethernet too,
but not explicitly mentioned and the Orange Box also supports USB
connection).

It definitely needs more info.

[Bug 417757] Re: [karmic regression] all network apps / browsers suffer from multi-second delays by default due to IPv6 DNS lookups

2009-11-22 Thread dhenry
options single-request in /etc/resolv.conf works, but it has two
drawbacks:

1) The first time you want to access a website, it will be slow.

2) when the process terminates, i.e. when you close the application or
when it ends by itself (web browser, apt-get, etc.), you lose all your
fast DNS resolving stuff. When you reopen the browser, it will be slow
again. Take apt-get: you run it for updating or installing some
packages, and it will close itself at the end of the operation, and all
is lost. Next time you run apt-get, it has to resolve everything again
with the slow method...

[Bug 438000] Re: [i945gm] [karmic] X servers hangs when settings up dual monitor config

2009-11-14 Thread dhenry
With kernel 2.6.32rc7 and xorg-edgers' intel driver (2.9.0+git), I could
switch to a console (tty1), and dump kernel messages after the GPU hang
(and reboot properly).

It seems that by default, the Gnome screen resolution menu sets external
monitor to extended at right, which could break with compiz enabled if
the with is greater than 2048. But what I don't understand is why does
it hang when I just run xrandr command after hotplugging the monitor?
(without setting up the external monitor yet)

[Bug 438000] Re: [i945gm] [karmic] X servers hangs when settings up dual monitor config

2009-11-14 Thread dhenry
Ok I see, calling xrandr will by default expand the virtual screen as
if the external monitor is right of LVDS, even if we directly call
xrandr --output VGA1 --below LVDS.

I tried with LVDS1=1280x800 and VGA1=1280x1024 (native resolutions, chosen by
default).
VGA1 at the right/left of LVDS1 will result in a frame buffer of 2560x1024 =
greater than 2048 (i945's hardware limit), crash with compiz.
VGA1 below/above LVDS1 will result in a frame buffer of 1280x1824 = Fits in
2048x2048 and works with compiz.

Running xrandr --output VGA1 --below LVDS first creates a 2560x1024
frame buffer before creating the proper 1280x1824 frame buffer (seen in
Xorg.0.log without compiz). Therefore, it will always crash with compiz
enabled. However we can do it with metacity (compiz disabled), and then
put back compiz (compiz.real --replace), it will work.

In Xorg.0.log, after running the command given below:
(II) intel(0): Allocate new frame buffer 2560x1024 stride 4096
(II) intel(0): Allocate new frame buffer 1280x1824 stride 2048

If you have higher native resolutions for LVDS and/or external monitor,
there is currently no solution with compiz.

Conclusion:

The problem is that xrandr and gnome-display-properties will
systematically setup the external monitor next to the LVDS, without
checking if it's possible. Those tools should not do this if hardware
does not allow it. The problem is that those tools are not aware that
compiz is running (which reduces the hardware limit to 2048x2048), and
so try to create the too large frame buffer (which is legal without
compiz).

[Bug 192735] Re: mpd no access to soundcard using pulseaudio

2009-11-12 Thread dhenry
Ah I didn't know that. But at least, the PulseAudio output could be
added (MPD accept multiple configured outputs), and then user just chose
the appropriate audio output (or we could even detect at install time
that pulseaudio is the used audio backend in order to enable it for
MPD).

[Bug 192735] Re: mpd no access to soundcard using pulseaudio

2009-11-12 Thread dhenry
Maybe we can also look if PulseAudio is installed and if a pulseaudio
process is running? If yes, we select it as the default Audio Output for
MPD, if not we keep ALSA.

But anyway, we should enable (i.e. uncomment in /etc/mpd.conf) both ALSA
and PulseAudio outputs, so that in case the wrong one is selected by
default, it's easy for the user to change (some clients like gmpc allow
to chose it in config dialog).

Also, we need to setup PulseAudio properly (network access to local
sound devices).

Just a suggestion.

[Bug 192735] Re: mpd no access to soundcard using pulseaudio

2009-11-12 Thread dhenry
The problem is still present in Karmic.

Enabling pulse output in /etc/mpd.conf:

audio_output {
typepulse
nameMy Pulse Output
}

And tunning PulseAudio preferences with paprefs as said in #15 (enable
network access to local sound devices and don't require
authentication) fixes it.

MPD is still not ready out-of-the-box for Ubuntu.

Emacs23, which now uses GTK (by default, it seems), is also affected by
this bug. As for firefox, I can fix it by properly creating
~/.fonts.conf...

I'm not a GTK guru so I don't know if applications developers have to
implement manually the connection between font usage and Gnome font
configuration or if GTK should do it automatically, but that makes 3
apps I've seen suffering from this problem. And there are probably more.

[Bug 297385] [NEW] iwl3945 sometimes fails to resume after suspend

Public bug reported:

2008-09-02 Thread dhenry
Wifi LED works and blinks with linux-2.6.27-rc3 on hardy (deb packages
from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/pub/next/2.6.27-rc3/), on my Lenovo 3000
N100 (intel wireless 3945). It also works in Intrepid with Live CD. If
nothing breaks before Intrepid is released, this should be finally fixed
with Ubuntu 8.10.

Note: I had to manually copy iwlwifi-3945.ucode and iwlwifi-3945-1.ucode
from /lib/firmware/2.6.24-19-generic/ to /lib/firmware/2.6.27-1-generic/

Ah, your sound control seems quite different than mine then. Here, the
headphones and speakers channels are the same, known as Master volume.
So I can't adjust headphone volume independently of speakers volume. So
you are saying is that you have an headphone channel which is non
fonctionnal when playing with it (a useless volume control), right?

Have you already tried on feisty (or edgy) the previous fix with success
on your laptop? (thge one with alsa 1.0.14) Because if you have a
different codec than AD1986A, the patch won't fix anything...

cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 | grep Codec

[Bug 94566] Re: Laptop speakers not muted when plugging in headphones

2007-10-13 Thread dhenry
Now building/installing alsa 1.0.15rc3 with a small fix (the patch
consists in a boolean negation, see https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org
/alsa-bug/view.php?id=2581) fully corrects the speaker issue on Lenovo
3000 N100, but the patch brakes on other laptops (like Samsung X60)...
So I think some more work is needed to distinguish the two sort of
laptops (those like Lenovo's 3000 N100 and the others). That's why it
may be hard to get it fixed in gutsy.

If you want to try the new patch, please send feedback on the alsa
bugzilla to know if your laptop behaves like Lenovo or like Samsung (try
first without the patch, and if it doesn't work, with patch).

(Also, I wonder if the former patch (for alsa 1.0.14) breakes for
others.)

On alsa's bugzilla entry (https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-

download, build and install everything needed to fix the bug (or you can
follow the same intructions on

That takes less than 15 mins even for a newbie, reboot included :-)

[Bug 94566] Re: Laptop speakers not muted when plugging in headphones

2007-10-13 Thread dhenry
I'm not certain that having the latest alsa-utils is mandatory, so maybe
ignoring it will be fine.

Also, you may need to pass an option to the sound module (to select the
same codepath as Lenovo), since your laptop doesn't seem to be listed in
driver's pci quirck list (alsa-kernel/pci/hda/patch_analog.c around line
833). In /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base, add:

options snd-hda-intel model=laptop-automute

Then, you have two tests:
1. Build without the patch. If the speakers automute, then you're lucky ;-)
2. If 1 failed, build with the patch.

[Bug 69069] sensible-browser not using user's browser from gnome-default-applications-properties

2006-10-29 Thread dhenry
Public bug reported:

sensible-browser does not use the preferred browser as specified in
gnome-default-applications-properties.

I have selected Epiphany as my favorite browser, with openning links in
new tab by default. So my default browser command is epiphany --new-tab
%s. sensible-browser only run epiphany %s (because of how it is
designed currently, with simlinks).

A common problem for me is when I want to open a link from xchat, xchat
calls sensible-browser and it runs a new epiphany window instead of
opening it in my current window in a new tab.

A quick fix is to set the BROWSER environment variable to the browser

This is an ATAPI CD-ROM, connected to the SATA/IDE controller which

Before being handled like an SCSI disk, it was named /dev/hdd. Now both

Public bug reported:

My CD-Rom is often not recognized at boot time, perhaps 1/2 or 1/3 of
