[Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer not working with AMD Radeon/Mobility Radeon HD 2000-4000 cards in Quantal+

2014-08-21 Thread djchandler
And the Open Source x.org radeon driver still overheats, especially on
laptops. This has been a problem for at least 4 years that I'm aware of,
and not getting perceptibly any better.

My 5+ year old Tosh laptop (RS780 graphics aka Radeon 3100 found in the
AMD 780V chipset) was fine with the fglrx driver and I was able to force
the 2.8x version until I upgraded from 12.04 to 14.04. You can no longer
downgrade back to an old copy of 12.04 and force the old version even
though it's in the repositories unless you still have your first .iso
download with the very oldest 3.2 kernel.

Any version of 12.04 I can see to download now with the oldest 3.2
kernel I can find won't install the 2.8x driver, apparently because
there's no kernel support for the older drivers (fails sanity check).
Somehow the problem has been compounded within the OS community after
AMD forked their support for so-called legacy GPUs and the Radeon 5xxx
GPUs and newer.

I started using Linux 12 or so years ago because it would run on older
hardware after MS or Apple discontinued OS support for a given
configuration. It looks like Canonical is getting more and more like
Apple and Microsoft. Now if your hardware is over 5 years old, you're
treated like some sort of Luddite.

[Bug 574876] Re: swell-foop segfaults with error 4 in libclutter-glx-1.0.so.0.200.4

2010-05-06 Thread djchandler
One of my desktops is doing the same thing as my laptop above. The
biggest difference is the laptop was upgraded from 9.04. The desktop was
a fresh Lucid install with the beta2, then updated. Both are 64-bit.

Here's the messages on the segfault.

And I'm getting the virtually the same error but in the 64-bit kernel

As you can see, this is easily repeatable. Where it crashes in the
course of the game seems to depend on gameplay action of certain
pattern(s) of squares being removed right after the mouseclick to make
that move.

Is this is perhaps a problem communicating with the fglrx driver? If so,
this is the only problem where the video driver may be involved that I'm
having. But I noticed the original report refers to the fglrx driver
too.

Sorry, the segfault messages are all the evidence of the crash I can
get.

[Bug 475066] Re: 10.04 beta1 fan is not working and increase the temperature - Toshiba U505 S2930

2010-05-02 Thread djchandler
This is still a problem in 10.04 on my Toshiba L305D-S5959. Setting
various boot parameters as mentioned in previous posts (and even some
not mentioned) so far have had no effect. The fan is either off and
stays off until the critical point is reached and the system shut itself
off, or, if the laptop already toasty (70°C or higher), the fan runs
full speed even if it cools down to around 45°C or so. No trip points
are set except for the critical of 105°C, which is way too hot IMO.

Both 9.04 and 9.10 ran just fine in this regard. This is a dual boot
laptop, and the only thing that happened between the upgrade to 9.10 and
the beginning of Beta testing for 10.04 was Windows 7 was installed on
another partition. Vista and Windows 7 had/has no heat issues either.
This laptop was purchased in August 2009 when a promotion was being run
for the free Windows 7 upgrade.

I'm beginning to suspect something was left out of the kernel or was
replaced that was in the previous versions' kernels. Running a 32-bit or
64-bit ubuntu build makes no difference either. Because other issues
kept nagging for attention during beta testing, I never quite go around
to reporting this previously.

One thing I have noticed that I thought was odd is the the file
/etc/default/acpid is entirely commented, so no acpi modules are being
loaded. Enabling loading of ACPI modules makes no difference though
either.

My next experiment is to see if I can re-load 9.10 or Debian Lenny to
see if the heat issue continues or not.

[Bug 141613] Re: npviewer.bin crashed with SIGSEGV

2010-04-18 Thread djchandler
Back to +2 after my -1 for flash 64 in the repos. We would be better off
to have no flash than force an Alpha on AMD64 users. The need for any
plug-in unnecessary soon. Adobe is talking with Google about complete
integration into Chrome. So this bug discussion could be renedered moot
in the near future.

What Adobe is developing may never become a full-fledged 64-bit product.
There's no plug-in for Windows or Mac being developed at all presently.
Some features aren't even implemented yet.

Don't force an Alpha down my throat. The 64-bit Alpha isn't faster, and
it breaks websites, especially ones that stream video. That can't
possibly be better for most end-users. At least Hulu and ESPN 3 work now
with the 32-bit plug-in and the wrapper. Take those away and, IMHO, you
may as well have no plug-in at all.

Let's either fix nspluginwrapper, or tell people we're going to wait to
see what Adobe is going to do.

BTW, what's going on with these previous two posts?

[Bug 283131] Re: Toshset should be an optional package or routed through upstart or something

2010-04-12 Thread djchandler
The dependencies listed above are no longer an issue, yet it installed
(1.75-2) by default with 10.04 Beta 1 AMD64 on a Toshiba Satellite
L305D-S5959, a configuration that uses Insyde's H20 EFI framework.
Although probably not the case, this package being installed possibly
could be obfuscating what is causing overheating issues. With the last
kernel update (2.6.32-20) there appears to be no fan control from the
kernel. It is either on or off and stays that way probably depending on
the temperature sensed before entering booting the kernel. It would
probably be better to keep this package as an optional item, not
installed by default.

[Bug 557829] [NEW] xserver-xorg-video-ati - overheats computer

2010-04-07 Thread djchandler
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Lucid Lynx 10.04 AMD64 Beta 1

xserver-xorg-video-radeon 1:6.12.192-2ubuntu2
xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.12.192-2ubuntu2

AMD AthlonTM X2 Dual-Core QL-65 @ 2.1GHz (running stock speed, Cool 'n' Quiet
working, cpu frequency regulation in kerenel is working, idles @ 1.05GHz but
temperature still goes up)
AMD M780V Chipset
ATI Radeon 3100 IGP (RV610)
720P video native support (I suppose that means hardware implemented)

Laptop (Toshiba L305D-S5959) overheats when running open source driver.
Idles at around 70°C at room temperature of ~22°C, have BIOS set to
shutdown at 95°C to avoid hardware damage. Computer will shut itself off
due to temperature under moderate load such as viewing flash video in
Firefox on hulu.com. This has been repeated at least 3 times.

Running the proprietary fglrx driver 2:8.721-0ubuntu7 (with no other
software changes), the computer idles @ 45°C (20°C cooler) at room
temperature of ~22°C. Watching video on hulu.com does not cause
overheating issues.

This is something that could damage computers. If it's under warranty
but Ubuntu is found on the hard drive the manufacturer will probably
void the warranty. I certainly don't want Ubuntu to get that kind of
reputation.

[Bug 507251] Re: npviewerbin crashed

2010-03-31 Thread djchandler
No upload was apparently made of the crash report generated by apport. I
found it all in one big 12MB file, and with no idead how to process it.
I'm compressing the whole
_usr_lib_nspluginwrapper_i386_linux_npviewer.bin.1000.crash file and
somebody else can process it.

[Bug 549923] Re: gnome-appearance-properties crashed with SIGSEGV in g_closure_invoke()

2010-03-31 Thread djchandler
How could these packages be outdated? This was a fresh install of 10.04
Beta 1 the day after its release. All possible updates are being applied
as they are released, as fast as I can possibly get them. In the
meantime I'm seeing posts on UF that discuss these new packages a day or
two before they apparently show up on my update server's repository.
Obviously things are changing rapidly as the planned release date
approaches.

For all I know this report is irrelevant. Installed versions of some
packages listed above by Apport retracing service have already been
superseded. We may as well close this bug and label irrelevant.

Yes this is inconvenient. Once again apport doesn't seem to provide
sufficient information to allow anyone to move forward.

[Bug 552650] Re: gnome-appearance-properties crashed with SIGSEGV in g_closure_invoke()

2010-03-31 Thread djchandler
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

This is related to the new feature that allows switching the button
position based upon the theme selected. Crash occurred when switching
themes between Ambiance custom theme that had button placement in the
  right upper window corner.

When I re-opened Appearances and went to themes, I was once again
presented with the option to move the buttons back to the left side in
  Ambiance.

This is being implemented in the right way, even if new bugs have been
introduced. Whether or not it works is inconsistent though, as if not
all indicators are being polled. Else it's in the dialog box itself that
queries the user about their preference.

Suggestion: Ask the user if they want the button position right or left,
Asking if they want to "revert" is ambiguous. Does that mean the
original position for that theme (and does it mean that theme only), as
the button_layout data had edited with gconf or in the "traditional"
  upper right?

- Yes, I'm one of the guys that's been editing metacity;s button_layout
+ Yes, I'm one of the guys that's been editing metacity's button_layout
with gconf-editor. As of the moment button_layout is consistent with the
Ambiance theme as originally designed. But when I tried to change back
to Clearlooks, the button placement is still left (where I don't want
  it) and Appearance crashed again.

[Bug 507251] Re: npviewerbin crashed

2010-03-31 Thread djchandler
I had something similar happen while running Firefox 3.6, 10.04 AMD64
Beta1 with all possible updates applied. A flash object apparently
triggered the crash while viewing a blog at blogs.zdnet.com.

I have a question with a suggestion. Why is it that apport manages to
leave out a report that seems to be vital in these instances? If apport
is installed, why aren't such contingencies anticipated? Shouldn't such
debugging software as vagrind and backtrace be already installed as part
of the dependencies and packages being pulled in by an apport based
metapackage?

BTW, I have no idea if the attachments generated by apport are going to
get uploaded here or not since I'm not filing a new bug report. Could
that be one of the reasons you see so many duplicate bug reports?

[Bug 545033] Re: grub does not list Windows 7 anymore

2010-03-24 Thread djchandler
When I updated to the latest kernel (2.6.32-17 generic AMD64) yesterday,
my default boot moved from Windows 7 at the bottom of my GRUB2 menu to 2
spots up and made the default memtest86+ and Windows 7 was still at the
bottom of the list. Of course two items, the new kernel in both single
user and normal mode were placed at the top of the menu. I had to use
startup-manager to restore my default.

This appears to be buggy behavior to me, and appears to validate the
OP's experience.

I manually partitioned on the clean install of Beta 1 and specified ext3
for / instead of ext4. Space for Ubuntu was created in Windows 7. Yes,
I'm trying to break this--many people upgrading may still be using ext3
with live data.

[Bug 178038] Re: npviewer.bin crashed with SIGSEGV

2010-03-22 Thread djchandler
Crashed while running Lucid Beta 1, Google Chrome Beta 5.0.307.11, and
viewing email on AT&T/Yahoo and attempting to alphabetize by sender.
Also the workspace switcher disappeared simultaneously.

The page is over-the-top scripted and draws on many resources. I
actually hate it for those reasons and only visit it once a week to
check its spam filter for wanted email.

For all I know this could have more to do with Chrome problems than
Lucid.

[Bug 537262] Re: plymouth pid missing from OMITPIDS and terminated by sendsigs - PLEASE NO MORE CONFIRMATIONS/COMMENTS

2010-03-21 Thread djchandler
Sorry, didn't see the "NO MORE COMMENTS." But since apport sends you
here by default, isn't it a bit unrealistic to shout in the heading like
that?

This is understandably frustrating from the maintainers point of view.
It is equally disconcerting to get this kind of reception when this is
the first time seeing this bug/page. Can't the reporting page be closed?
If it can't one would assume that's because someone posting here may
still be able to offer an additional insight.

Let's all take a deep breath and calm ourselves.

2010-03-21 Thread djchandler
Just crashed in Beta 1, installed cleanly just yesterday and all updates
applied. I had just installed GRUB 1 so I could use grub-choose-default
on a dual boot system (apparently it doesn't work with GRUB 2). Anyway,
this occurred trying to run "gksu grub-choose-default" and just after
entering my password to change the default OS on boot.

[Bug 487446] [NEW] package grub-pc 1.97~beta4-1ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2009-11-23 Thread djchandler
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub2

Failed to merge grub.cfg after running update manager and getting the
latest kernal following a clean install of 9.10-AMD64 that followed a
Windows 7(32-bit) upgrade on dual boot Toshiba L305D-S5959 Laptop. Of
course the clean install was done in response to losing grub with the
Windows 7 32-bit upgrade. This was an easy fix on another system that
had Ubuntu 9.04 as the only previous system when installing Win 7 RC x64
to create another dual-booting system . Now I have no idea where this
stands yet. But looking at grub.cfg l don't really see the problem, but
I'm not bug hunting there tonight. I'll copy on the bottom of this post.
Haven't re-booted yet, but I'm betting it's okay.

This may just be a little bit of scary error trapping by somebody, and
not truly a bothersome bug.

Admittedly I'm trying to break things in Win 7 and Ubuntu both. FYI, I
have an MS TechNet Subscription for research purposes. But the Win7 32
upgrade was a Toshiba customized for their laptops as I purchased a new
laptop just last August. All I can say is grub-pc/grub2 certainly has
obfuscated the fix compared to the straightforward method before the
release of 9.10.

Here's grub.cfg, unedited.

[Bug 413781] Re: jockey not restoring ath5k driver from blacklist

2009-09-15 Thread djchandler
madwifi.conf was/is created by madwifi. I try not to muck about in /etc
directories except as a last resort. Maybe it's a madwifi problem and
not strictly a jockey bug. I'm sticking with the FOSS driver for Atheros
(kernel blob?) for now.

/etc/modprobe.d/madwifi.conf to restore it manually.

Reason I tried madwifi was connection problems due to bad signal from
wireless router. But restoring the defailt ath5k driver left me with no
wireless due to ath5k being blacklisted after discovering router
deficiency.

I probably would not have been so persistent had I been at home, but we
are visiting relatives and there was no other option than to get this
issue solved. My brother-in-law had all the rj-45 jacks filled with his
things.

[Bug 219303] Re: Problem with OAFIID:GNOME_VoiceControlApplet while adding VoiceControl to GNOME Panel

2008-05-17 Thread djchandler
I found Dasher, which is part of the Gnome Desktop. It installs by
default in Ubuntu 8.04 and can be found under
System>Preferences>Assistive Technologies. Dasher offers good potential
for people with motion disabilities. So disregard my previous post
please. I probably should have posed my question on Ubuntu Forums in the
first place.

For the rest of you looking for alternative text entry methods, Dasher
actually looks much more promising than any voice recognition software
I've tried before under another nameless OS.

[Bug 224599] Re: system-config-samba.py crashed with SystemError in __init__()

2008-05-17 Thread djchandler
It looks like the fix for the gnome configuration utilities in hardy is
underway. The bug isn't in Samba itself. If you can write your own
smb.conf file, samba will work. Additionally, I wasn't able to use the
"Connect to Server" item under "Places," but could connect to my Windows
boxes with "Network."

[Bug 219303] Re: Problem with OAFIID:GNOME_VoiceControlApplet while adding VoiceControl to GNOME Panel

2008-05-17 Thread djchandler
Tried the patch. Re-compiled AMD64 applet now loads, but seems to be
stuck in calibration. Judging by the developers help file comments, it
may not be too big a loss if it doesn't work correctly. It's apparently
early in development.

Anybody know of another way to control Gnome for someone with
neurological upper extremity handicaps?

Keyboarding is what's difficult. Mousing is okay, but I'm overusing my
right hand. Already had bilateral carpal tunnel surgery, right hand
first, but more nerves involved now. I hate to complain, but I'm looking
for a way to overcome a what could be a permanent and perhaps worsening
condition. Certain vendors specialize in providing modified interfaces,
but not for Linux as far as I know.

Can get to Windows network through Nautilus if it is already open; also
find Windows servers by accessing the "Places" menu and selecting

Suggests disconnect only between certain administrative Gnome
applications and Samba. The bug seems to be in Gnome. Gnome Art will not
work either. Will report separately.

[Bug 225801] Re: Partitions not detected on install with 64-bit Live CD

2008-05-13 Thread djchandler
This is a hardware problem, possibly a bad eIDE cable or internal to the
drive itself. Debian Etch installed and ran on this hard drive after
failure to install Ubuntu 8.04. Hardy now Installed okay with same
motherboard using different (SATA) drive. But I noticed the hald package
is back in by default after updating my fresh install.

[Bug 225801] [NEW] Partitions not detected on install with 64-bit Live CD

2008-05-02 Thread djchandler
Public bug reported:

Tried with blanked (DBAN) WD 160gb hard disk (nforce 3 chipset) first,
no luck. Partitioned with Western Digital Tools CD (for XP SP 2,) twice,
partitions still not detected, either with 80gb or 160gp primary
partition.

Partitioned whole disk successfully with Debian Etch 64-bit installer,
but Ubuntu Installer still won't detect. Suggests a disconnect with
graphical front-end in gparted. Running gparted separately from
installer on Live CD yields same result, no partitions detected.

This is a fresh install due to a motherboard swap. I'm trying to install
from the alternate cd now.

[Bug 131445] Re: Causes all gnome panels to disappear from screen right after drawing the panels when starting up desktop.

2007-08-10 Thread djchandler
Got my Open GL back. And just deleting the non-free driver (1.0.7184)
and its dependencies was all I needed to do. So it had nothing to do
with me tweaking xorg.conf to use my wide screen in proper proportions.
This may be a bug in gnome-panel too. I put another applet in the bottom
panel as suggested above (120 high, max) with bottom placement. After
restarting, the new bottom panel was at the top of the screen. May have
something to do with marking the autohide box in panel properties.
Applet was Dictionary, so I'm pretty sure this is a bug in gnome panel.
Will report as such, but it's not serious. Since the handles were
visible, I was able to open it and manipulate both the applet and the
panel properties.

The problem with Sherman's Aquarium is it doesn't apparently set
limitations on finite dimensions in relation of the size of the screen
it is on. When placed with a second applet in the bottom panel set to
autohide and not expand, Sherman's Aqaurium worked until I exceeded the
limits of my screen width (1360), but this time I got an error message
that it unexpectedly quit and was able to continue without restarting
the X server. So it has something to do with the applet not being able
to determine its maximum width if the panel gets too wide (tall). I was
trying to get a bigger applet window when this happened, with width to
height ratio set at 20:1. I know that's unreasonable, but was just
making it as big as possible. It's probably not worth fooling with. Only
an experimenter like me who also knows how to recover from ridiculous
errors will ever see this.

[Bug 131445] Causes all gnome panels to disappear from screen right after drawing the panels when starting up desktop.

2007-08-09 Thread djchandler
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: shermans-aquarium

Ubuntu Feisty Fawn, 32-bit, Nvidia NV11DDR (GeForce 2 MX200 DDR, 32mb at
1360x768, 24 bit color Viewsonic N2751w, Athlon64 2800+, 512mb ram, PC
Chips socket 754 mb, Via chipset(s)

I'm not able to get OpenGL screensavers to work at all. They were
working until I loaded the restricted Nvidia legacy glx (1.0.7184)
driver, 2.6.20.5-16.29 modules. Otherwise, I'm not having any problems,
but I'm not a heavy graphics user or game player.

I tried to put Sherman's Aquarium on its own panel, horizontal at bottom of
screen, and made the panel as wide (tall) as I could at the bottom of the
screen. I adjusted the tank dimensions to give me a square tank as large as
possible. The panel properties were: Orientation - Bottom
Size - ? (I have a side panel that limited its vertical size, but I don't
remember how much)
Autohide and Show hide buttons were both ticked.

Everything was okay until I logged out. X server is set to restart on
log-out. When I logged back in, the two other panels aligned as usual
where they had been before I added the third panel just for Sherman's.
The third panel opened up at the top of the screen instead of the
bottom, just below the top panel. It flickered repeatedly until finally
all three gnome panels just disappeared. I recovered by uninstalling
Sherman's via Synaptic.

Problem may be related to Open GL not working properly. If I get that
fixed and this happens again, I'll report again. If you haven't heard
anything for two weeks or so, it probably means I'm still struggling
with Open GL. I still don't know what I did. Putting back the default
Nvidia driver doesn't help. There's probably something else fouled up in
xorg.conf.
