Description: network management framework daemon
NetworkManager attempts to keep an active network connection available at all
times. It is intended only for the desktop use-case, and is not intended for
usage on servers. The point of NetworkManager is to make networking
configuration and setup as painless and automatic as possible. If using DHCP,
NetworkManager is _intended_ to replace default routes, obtain IP addresses
from a DHCP server, and change nameservers whenever it sees fit.
 .
This package provides the userspace daemons.

[Bug 264683] Re: (intrepid) When coming out of hibernate in a different physical location, wireless networks are not updated.

2008-09-15 Thread dlublink
I included the complete syslog so you have complete information, but you
can see using tail -n 20 syslog where it fails to connect.

In this case, it can not even connect to the same wireless access point
as before the hibernate. I will attach syslog from a situation where I
change physical locations this evening.

** Attachment added: Complete syslog

I also notice that for the past few weeks it has prompted me to connect
to a wireless network even though it already has the information. Is
this a new feature or a bug?

[Bug 264683] [NEW] (intrepid) When coming out of hibernate in a different physical location, wireless networks are not updated.

2008-09-04 Thread dlublink
Public bug reported:

To reproduce :

1. Connect to a wireless network on Ubuntu Intrepid
2. Hibernate the computer
3. Move computer to a new location where the original network is not available
and a new network is available
4. Resume the computer

What happens :

Network Manager Applet shows only the original wireless network and
tries to reconnect to it.

What should happen :
Network Manager Applet should show the networks in the new location and not
try and connect to a wireless network that is not available.

What I think is happening :
I think the Network Manager is not scanning for new wireless networks when it
resumes.

severely impairs that ability, I would say this bug should have an

[Bug 95817] Re: Hardy's Kernel Panics With Netgear MA401 PCMCIA Wireless Installed ( Gutsy and Feisty as well )

2008-08-29 Thread dlublink
Hey,

I'll wait for the alpha 5 CD because the machine is running hardy
stable. How can I remove modules from the ISO image before burning it? I
can mount the ISO but I think the kernel and module are elsewhere on the
CD.

I need to remove the orinoco_cs driver to ensure it uses hostap (hostap
does wpa2 orinoco_cs does not ).

Thanks,

David

[Bug 260980] [NEW] iptables -m time iptables v1.3.8: Couldn't load match `time':/lib/iptables/libipt_time.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

2008-08-24 Thread dlublink
Public bug reported:

When following instructions on this page :

This message is seen :

{{{

cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

}}}

But it seems the module is there :
{{{
# lsmod | grep xt_time
xt_time 3968 0
x_tables 16132 4 ipt_REJECT,xt_tcpudp,xt_time,ip_tables

}}}

man iptables has no information on time based rules.

2008-08-24 Thread dlublink
The time module seems to be available from iptables 1.4.0 +, so it'll be
there in intrepid. Tough luck for hardy users. I checked and it is
included in intrepid. This ticket should be closed, although it would be
nice to have iptables 1.4.0 in hardy, but I do not believe that iptables
1.4.0 would be appropriate for hardy since it is a new version. Perhaps
in backports?

[Bug 258156] [NEW] gksu blocks screensaver and does not timeout

2008-08-15 Thread dlublink
Public bug reported:

Tested in intrepid :

When I choose any option for the administration menu, a window popups
up asking me to enter my password (gksu), if I enter nothing it stays
there. If I enter nothing for 4 hours it stays there, the screen saver
never starts.

This dialogue should not prevent the screensaver from running. Perhaps
the dialogue should timeout after 2 of inactivity? Leaving the window
open should not stop screensaver.

and the package was lost. I reinstalled intrepid freshly and the network
is working again. Since I can not reproduce the error and the
information in this ticket is not clear, I think it is best to close the
ticket.

[Bug 257712] [NEW] human-murrine theme is missing

2008-08-13 Thread dlublink
Public bug reported:

I updated a fresh 8.04 install to intrepid today and the window manager
decals are not correct. In the appearance preferences screen it says
This theme will not look as intended because the required window
manager theme 'Human-Murrine' is not installed..

If this is used by the default theme, it should be included by default.

[Bug 256659] [NEW] Atheros card not working in intrepid since 4 or 5 days ago

2008-08-10 Thread dlublink
Public bug reported:

I am running both hardy and intrepid on my computer. Running in Hardy,
the card works fine. In Intrepid about 4 or 5 days ago I ran an update
and the wireless card doesn't work. I suspect it is a change in the
kernel.

Network manager icon does not appear in the bar in ubuntu and when I try
and connect using the command line it doesn't connect.

Commands I typed :
{{{
ifconfig wlan0 down
iwconfig wlan0 essid 'senn09'

[Bug 256659] Re: Atheros card not working in intrepid since 4 or 5 days ago

2008-08-10 Thread dlublink
The kernel running is Linux david-laptop 2.6.26-5-generic #1 SMP Sun
Aug 3 01:25:54 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux but I can not for sure say the
problem is kernel related. The network manager should appear in Gnome
whether or not the kernel driver is working properly, so let's start by
pointing out the missing icon. I noticed the package was updated
2008-08-07 09:48:56 status installed network-manager-gnome
0.6.6-0ubuntu3, so let's start here. How can I debug this package and
find out why it is not working?

[Bug 254752] [NEW] Dual boot Ubuntus cause out of date grub/menu.lst

2008-08-04 Thread dlublink
Public bug reported:

1. I installed Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 on sda1 and sda5(swap).
2. I installed Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 on sda6 and sda7(swap).
3. I updated Ubuntu sda1 to Intrepid
4. Grub is now controlled by sda6 and any time Ubuntu Intrepid updates it's
kernel, it is no added to grub since grub/menu.lst is on sda6 instead of sda1.

Should ubuntu installer share the grub/menu.lst file?

[Bug 251546] Re: Shutdown/restart commands do not work when in safe graphics mode

2008-08-03 Thread dlublink
Hey,

Initially I thought it was because of the graphics driver problem. But
Now it is happening all the time. Do you have any log entries made when
you try and shutdown the computer ?

I switched to Console and did a tail -f /var/log/*, returned to gnome
and selected restart. I only encountered one message. As posted above.

What hardware do you have in your computer? Perhaps we should post
lspci?

[Bug 251898] Re: Evince memory leak on PDF file

2008-07-28 Thread dlublink
Running evince 2.23.5 on Ubuntu Intrepid has similar results. When I
open the document, memory usage spikes to 400 megabytes +. After a
moment or two ( once it has loaded the file ) it falls down to less than
20 megabytes. If I resize the window, it spikes again to 400 megabytes
and than comes back down.

Because I only have 512 megs of memory, during the spikes it swap
thrashes and I have time to see the excessive usage of memory. If you
can not see the memory usage, try reducing the available memory.

[Bug 252632] [NEW] When installing limewire, package installer stops on 'preparing sun-java6-jre'

2008-07-28 Thread dlublink
Public bug reported:

When installing limewire ( using the deb file available on their
website), I am unable to install it using the default deb handler. It
starts installing dependencies and eventually 'freezes' on Preparing
sun-java6-jre. Further investigation shows that if I click terminal I
see that sunjava is waiting for me to accept their license.

Any time a package halts for information, it should popup a message or
automatically expand the terminal.

On my computer it takes 1065 of memory in the VIRT column of TOP and 300

Since the actual document is only 124kb, I really do not think this is

[Bug 95817] Re: Feisty's Kernel Panics With Netgear MA401 PCMCIA Wireless Installed

2008-06-03 Thread dlublink
How's this bug coming along? Xubuntu 8.04 on the 2.6.24-17-generic (
uname -r ) kernel does the same thing.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.20-12-generic
+ Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.24-17-generic

The linux-image-2.6.20-12-generic kernel package panics on my Dell
Latitude 640 with a Netgear MA401 PCMCIA wireless card installed. It
runs fine without the card plugged in. Strangely, the Feisty Herd 5 and
Beta Live CDs boot and run just fine, with all the local wireless APs
detected and showing up in gnome-network-manger. But after installation
from either CD, the kernel panics on boot while detecting available
PCMCIA cards. I tried it with the -9, -11, and -12 generic kernels. If I
remember correctly, -8, -10, and earlier kernels worked (including the
  brief 2.6.19 series).

Feisty's installed generic kernel ran fine with the wireless card
installed up until around the Herd 4 era, when I installed a different
OS but decided to go back to Feisty.

If someone could tell me how to record kernel logs from a panic a boot,
  I'll post them.

racing game featuring Tux, the Linux mascot. The goal of the game is to slide
down a snow- and ice-covered mountain as quickly as possible, avoiding the
trees and rocks that will slow you down.
 .
Collect herrings and other goodies while sliding down the hill, but avoid fish
 bones.
 .
This game is based on the GPL version of the famous game TuxRacer.
 .
You should have working 3D acceleration for your X or this game will run quite
 slow.

[Bug 227411] [NEW] Rhythmbox should allow lyrics to appear automatically

2008-05-06 Thread dlublink
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

When lyrics are available, they should automatically appear in a pane in
the window ( instead of right clicking song -properties, lyrics ).

The option to see the lyrics in the main window should be a configurable
option.

[Bug 226728] [NEW] Ubuntu upgrade to Hard ( 8.04 LTS ) allows computer restart before installation completion

2008-05-04 Thread dlublink
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: release-upgrader-apt

When upgrading to Hardy Heron 8.04 LTS, it is possible to run programs
and restart the computer. If I run programs, most of them will be broken
because they will be half updated. If I restart the computer, it does
not resume the installation and it does not boot properly.

My mother in law was running 7.10 and selected the upgrade to 8.04 LTS
option. During the installation, the upgrader asked a question about a
change to the cups.conf file ( which I had changed ). She did not notice
the question, thought the installation was complete and restarted the
computer. When the computer restarted, it opened up gnome which did not
finish loading and did not give any error message.

In order to resolve the issue, I went down to terminal 1 ( CTRL + ALT +
F1 ) and as root ran apt-get dist-upgrade. It resumed the upgrade,
finished installing everything. I restarted and the computer worked
fine.

Things that should be improved in installer to make the upgrade more
user friendly :

1. If user tries to restart the computer during an upgrade, the user should see
a warning saying that the operation could seriously break the computer ( or
simply disable the shutdown button ! )
2. If the upgrade asks the user for information, the window asking the
information must be very obvious, perhaps flash until the user answers ?
3. If the upgrade is interrupted, it should be automatically resumed when the
computer restarts. In my MIL's case, she was unable to get as far as gnome.
Perhaps the upgrade could have pulled her down to tty1 and completed the upgrade
4. Upgrade should have a download only option
5. Perhaps the upgrade should run by itself and other programs should not be
allowed to run at the same time

( not sure if I selected the correct package, whatever packages causes a
computer to be upgraded using the orange notification icon )

David

[Bug 95817] Re: Feisty's Kernel Panics With Netgear MA401 PCMCIA Wireless Installed

2008-02-15 Thread dlublink
Hello,

It should be mentioned that I tried out PuppyLinux today, installed it
on my harddrive. By default it uses orinoco_cs for my card. I deleted
the modules from /lib/modules ( kids don't try this at home ) rebooted
and it used the hostap_cs driver instead by default. Guess what? The
kernel panicked!

So either this is a problem with udev who is loading the stuff or the
kernel who is maybe not loading the modules in the proper order (
remember that if I boot the machine without the card and plug it in once
it is mostly booted it works fine).

To whom should I report this too first? Linux or Udev?

Thanks,

David

[Bug 185694] [NEW] compize settings manager sees 'jpg' but not 'JPG'

2008-01-24 Thread dlublink
Public bug reported:

The Compize settings manager, or 'Advanced Desktop Effects Settings'
manager does not seem to see JPG.

1. Open manager
2. Go into Cube settings
3. Go enable skydome

You'll see pictures ending in 'jpg' but not 'JPG'. This is annoying
because digital cameras use uppercase names and beryl is looking for
lower and most GNU/Linux filesystems are case sensitive.

For the packages that are being automatically removed, this is because I
created my own debian package that depends on all the software I
normally install. The dist-upgrade removed it, I will simply put it back
after the upgrade.

The package can be found in my makeshift repository here

2007-12-30 Thread dlublink
If you go to the dvd slideshow main page at http://dvd-

Note: There is a known issue with newer versions of ffmpeg requiring a
different audio bitrate syntax which makes audio encoding fail. This is
fixed in the Subversion Repository code.

I believe, but could be mistaken, that this is fixed in DVD Slideshow
8.0.

2007-11-19 Thread dlublink
I reinstalled Ubuntu with ext3, and it works now. Might be a ReiserFS +
ma401 + Serial Port + Ubuntu Kernel patches conflict.

[Bug 95817] Re: Feisty's Kernel Panics With Netgear MA401 PCMCIA Wireless Installed

2007-11-19 Thread dlublink
I noticed that the new installation is using the orinoco_cs driver
(which is not WPA compatible), I blacklisted that. It is kernel
panicking now. hostap_cs_probe is about halfway through the kernel panic
text. I will blacklist it now.

with hostap_cs blacklisted, it no longer panics. Want to send that
debugging version?

According to uname -rv

2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Sun Oct 14 23:05:12 GMT 2007

While I wait, I am going to compile the kernel by myself.

[Bug 95817] Re: Feisty's Kernel Panics With Netgear MA401 PCMCIA Wireless Installed

2007-11-19 Thread dlublink
Looks like that ext3 changes the order in which the kernel considers the
modules. If it uses orinoco_cs, it boots without problem but cannot
connect to wpa. When I use Reiserfs it takes hostap_cs first ( which
causes the kernel panic ) and doesn't boot.

[Bug 95817] Re: Feisty's Kernel Panics With Netgear MA401 PCMCIA Wireless Installed

2007-11-17 Thread dlublink
Hey,

I'll try it on monday. When I was using Gentoo with this laptop I had
the hostap_cs driver installed ( I think ) because it was the only way
to get WPA to work with my laptop.

Does the Ubuntu Linux Kernel have any customized patches to this part of
the kernel?

David

Even with the options in config.opts, it still takes IRQ 3 when I insert
the card. Have I misunderstood the purpose of this file?

Hmm, it might be lilo that affects this. I am reinstalling a fresh
install with the same setup as my test installation that was crashing
earlier. I'll put Lilo this time.

[Bug 95817] Re: Feisty's Kernel Panics With Netgear MA401 PCMCIA Wireless Installed

2007-11-16 Thread dlublink
The kern log I posted from the failed boot, I blocked udev from starting
and started it once the filesystem was fully loaded and all. At that
point, it was able to write the log.

Out of curiosity I just noticed that the current kernel panic isn't the
same. I notice a reference to reiserfs search_for_position_by_key.
I'll keep lookg and see what I found.

What filesystem are you using?
