[Bug 291085] Re: web browsing extremely slow

2009-11-14 Thread dsiddens
In my case I'm using a Thinkpad 43p, 2GB, and Ubuntu 9.04. The dowload
speeds, as reported by Ubuntu's System Monitor runs in the 20 to 80
Kb/s. Mostly around 35Kb/s. The ISP (Century Link) sent out a tech and
the he reported that the line was good (above a minimum of 9Mb/s. We
actually were getting slightly above 11Mb/s. We tried three other
computers all of which were running some issue of Windows XP. The XP
machines all clocked above 9Mb/s using Speakeasy.net.

I just ran another speed test and compared the result to the Ubuntu
System Monitor: While the external site said about 54Kb/s, System
Monitor reported about 12Kb/s.

[Bug 482917] [NEW] Very slow download speeds and sometimes slow system performance.

2009-11-14 Thread dsiddens
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

I'm using a Thinkpad 43p, 2GB, and Ubuntu 9.04. The dowload speeds, as
reported by Ubuntu's System Monitor runs in the 20 to 80 Kib/s. Mostly
around 35Kib/s. The ISP (Century Link) sent out a tech and he reported
that the line was good (above a minimum of 9Mb/s. We actually were
getting slightly above 11Mb/s on some other machines. We tried three
other computers all of which were running some issue of Windows XP. The
XP machines all clocked download speeds above 9Mb/s using Speakeasy.net
in either a hard wired or WiFi connection.

I just ran another speed test and compared the result to the Ubuntu
System Monitor: While the external site said about 54Kib/s, System
Monitor reported about 12Kib/s.

This slow rate is observed with fire fox, thunderbird, pan.

Also, I don't know if this is a related or different problem, but
sometimes system performance slows to a crawl. When I check System
Monitor, it shows the CPU running 100%. When I look at what is running
the two top consumers of CPU cycles are Firefox and System Monitor to
the additive measure of about 80%. The slow download speed is not
directly related to Firefox being open or not, e.g., Pan is downloading,
Firefox is not opened... slow download speed. Or, Firefox is
downloading and Pan is not opened... same slow download speed.

[Bug 314106] Re: Printer not connected

2009-04-15 Thread dsiddens
I have discovered what I guess is a work around. In
SystemAdministrationPrinting, I right click on the printer icon and select
Properties. Under Device URI, I click Change. After a period of waiting,
the computer seems to set a new URI and then all is well... for a while. What
is happening in the meanwhile that causes the printer to become non-op, I don't
know.

[Bug 156366] Re: FeistyGutsy upgrade bricked my hard drives

2007-12-13 Thread dsiddens
I did a hot insert of the bricked h.d. into the #2 h.d. bay of the HP
dv8000. The system became unresponsive except for the cursor still being
able to move. I removed the bricked h.d. and the system responds as
expected. Would it make a difference if I put a jumper on the
master/slave pins of the bricked h.d.? Right now there is no jumper on
those pins.The drive is a Seagate Momentus 5400.2 120GB.

Issue #1: I still have two bricked hard drives with data on them. Can

Issue #2: I put in a _new hard drive_ and installed Gutsy 64 on the HP

password screens is 3:04 minutes!

Your assistance will be much appreciated.

Michael,
Thank you for your considerate reply. However, the drive in
question, when inserted into the laptop's #2 position somehow prevent
the new hd with a functioning install of Gutsy from booting. Can you
please recommend a GUI program that will allow me to manipulate the
bricked drives and pull off the files I need?If such a thing is not
possible can I send the drives to Ubuntu headquarters and have one of
the 'brains' make a recovery and examination for the purpose of
improving Ubuntu? I'll pay postage and insurance both ways.

Thank you Doug

[Bug 156366] FeistyGutsy upgrade bricked my hard drives

2007-10-23 Thread dsiddens
Public bug reported:

I used the update notification at Synaptic Package Manager on my
Feisty laptop to begin the Gutsy upgrade. After the files were obtained
it began replacing Feisty to Gutsy versions. As the files were being
written, I noticed quite a few dependencies errors with their messages
that a given file (program) would not be installed or might not work
properly. This message suggested that I file a bug report. A bit further
on into this upgrade process I noticed that there were messages giving
me the option to compare the differences between the file I had and
the new file. So on one of these messages, I don't know which one, I
selected D and was given a command line screen that described stuff I
did not know about and then sat there saying end.

I figured that hitting enter would return me to the install process.
Not so. The machine was sitting at the command prompt waiting for, I
don't know what. Eventually I thought if I did a power down/up that the
install process would pick up from where it left off. Again, not so. I
tried booting from the regular kernal choice and from the recovery mode,
neither of which yeilded a working computer.

From the screens that stopped on the boot attempts I wrote down the
last screen of each attempt. The significant lines are:

For the kernel 2.6.22-14 (recovery mode)

the result that I was brought to a light blue screen with a cursor that
I could move around but no text or sign-in boxes.

The machine in question is an HP dv8000 AMD64 laptop with two internal hard
drives. It was running fine with the Feisty software.
I've used our second laptop to download the Gutsy AMD64 .iso and burn a CD. I
am at the bricked laptop as I write this, but only on the CD. I want help
with finding, identifying and recovering important files, if not the entire
hard disks. Such files include e-mail, boat information, passwords, bookmarks,
etc. This is the second time in an upgrade process that this level of screw-up
has happened. Last time was Dapper to Edgy and I lost all information. Help,
please! Doug

Thank you, Doug

[Bug 59853] Re: click, drag drop confused

2006-09-12 Thread dsiddens
From Lionel Le Folgoc's recommendation via email, I used Synaptic
Package Manager to get xfree86-driver-synaptics. Then went to
/usrx11R6/lib/modules/input and found that I already had the file
synaptics_drv.o.

I then rebooted and the touchpad was controllable. However, three new
problems have become apparant. First, there is no scroll function. At
one time I could double click and make a scroll happen. Second, if i
want to do a drag and select several files I must hold down the left pad
switch. Third, when I went to Kaffeine player and ran a clip, went to
full screen, the returned to the screen with the top and bottom menus,
the bottom control bar (panel, menu?) was flickering. A second run
found Kaffeine locked in the full screen mode until the clip was done
and 'P' for playlist was clicked, which released the full screen and
brought up the playlist.

I wonder if there is or will be a gui to set all the features of the
Synaptics touchpad?

Maybe this issue is getting closer to being resolved and incorporated
into an update. Thank you to all who are working on this issue.

[Bug 47971] Re: [Bug 47971] Re: synaptics touch pad(laptop) clicks when i dont want it to

2006-09-10 Thread dsiddens
Hi Paul,
Can you send me detailed lines as to making the xfree fix?

I'm a transplant from MS land and do not know how to get around in Linux
if it doesn't exist on the GUI.

Thank you, Doug

[Bug 59853] click, drag drop confused

2006-09-10 Thread dsiddens
Public bug reported:

my touchpad is in its second cycle of confused behavior. A variaty of
misbeaviors: touching the pad sometimes makes a call to a url, the
location apparantly some misbegotten cut. Touching the top bar makes
the window disappear to the bottom of the stack. Attempting to click
will result in a selection of the item but no action will result. An
physical button must be pressed. In lists of items, i.e., bookmarks,
it's real easy to inadvertantly drag and drop an item an loose it inside
another.

The touchpad is such and important part of the human input stream that
having the touchpad be out-of-order makes the entire computer rather
useless. The computer that I am running Ubuntu 6.06 on is a HP DV8000
with AMD64 chip. I am not a software engineer. Will someone take the
time to help me get the touchpad right?

Thank you, Doug Siddens

Note: the original reporter indicated the bug was in package
'synaptics'; however, that package was not published in Ubuntu.

This is a me too note. I think I can claim to have experienced all
the behaviors above at various times. I'm ignorant of the linux command
line; just want the pad to work as a full-on synaptics optioned device.
System is a hp dv8000, amd turion64, 1meg ram, ubuntu 6.06.
