[Bug 1172092] Re: Have an nvidia titan GPU with 2560x1600 monitor. As soon as I enable the driver and reboot, X crashes with black screen

2013-04-28 Thread earthforce_1
I am running the latest NVIDIA driver, and I now have the correct screen
resolution, but it is crashing after a few minutes, especially when web
browsing. The browser will become unresponsive, turn dark, then the
mouse will freeze, then the entire machine will reboot after about 20
seconds or so.

This is incredibly frustrating.

[Bug 1172092] [NEW] Have an nvidia titan GPU with 2560x1600 monitor. As soon as I enable the driver and reboot, X crashes with black screen

2013-04-23 Thread earthforce_1
Public bug reported:

Default fresh 13.04 install does not offer the nvidia drivers and
doesn't recognize my monitor: It thinks I am running a laptop and offers
me only the choice of either 800x600 or 1024x768 (yuk) 4:3 resolution
when I have a 16:9 monitor.

As soon as I install the nvidia drivers and reboot, bad things happen, I
see a brief flash of purple then it hangs with a black screen. I was
lucky to be able to get to the grub prompt and select the CLI where I
uninstalled everything nvidia and was able to at least get back to a
1024x768 GUI.

I was previously running 12.10 with an ATI HD5790 card which I had to
replace due to a bad fan. It was previously able to detect this card
and set my monitor to the correct resolution without any difficulty, and
offered me the chance to install the closed source drivers.

Re: [Bug 678148] Re: Cannot boot with 2xHD5970 in crossfire on GA-X58A-UD7 motherboard

I had to replace the motherboard, and they are now working. I think the
original problem was one faulty card.

motherboard

earthforce_1, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu
better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please report the results following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelBoot ? As well, can you try with
the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available
from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a
Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically
gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the
issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-
testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon
next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and
deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your
results.

Thanks in advance.

I had to use the sudo apt-get dist-upgrade, as it was held back. I will

if I can replicate it.

[Bug 873809] Re: Natty to Oneric upgrade fails without error

2012-02-07 Thread earthforce_1
Walter - Yes, I think it was that one, but I am not absolutely 100%
positive. I do remember it being something 32 bit specific, and that it
was a library. Thanks for the response.

[Bug 873809] Re: Natty to Oneric upgrade fails without error

2011-12-28 Thread earthforce_1
I think I was able to fix it by manually changing the apt-get sources
from natty to oneric and removing one problematic 32-bit library package
that the update was complaining about. I also had to do some other post
install fixes, like updating grub to work with the 3.x kernel

2011-10-18 Thread earthforce_1
No change. Exactly the same thing happens.

** Description changed:

  Tried:
  sudo do-release-upgrade -d
  sudo update-manager -d

  All fail the same way:
Checking for a new ubuntu release
  Get:1 Upgrade tool signature [198 B]

  Get:2 Upgrade tool [1164 kB]

  Fetched 1164 kB in 0s (0 B/s)

  extracting 'oneiric.tar.gz'
  authenticate 'oneiric.tar.gz' against 'oneiric.tar.gz.gpg'

After that - nothing. No error message is apparent.

[Bug 873809] Re: Natty to Oneric upgrade fails without error

2011-10-15 Thread earthforce_1
Requested information added.

I noticed that, but my bandwidth was tied up last night with other
upgrades, and I wasn't able to update the bug anymore.

I just sudo deleted the contents of the /var/log/dist-update directory and
retried the command:
sudo do-release-upgrade -d
=== Command detached from window (Sat Oct 15 15:30:42 2011) ===
=== Command terminated with signal 11 (Sat Oct 15 15:30:42 2011) ===

=== Command detached from window (Sat Oct 15 15:31:00 2011) ===

I get the prompt press x to destroy or r to resurrect window when I
type anything. 'r' just repeats the last two lines. I have attached
the new /var/log/main.log and screenlog.0 that was just created:

[Bug 873809] Re: Natty to Oneric upgrade fails without error

2011-10-15 Thread earthforce_1
the apport command does nothing - just seems to hang.
From a bash terminal:

whereis apport
apport: /etc/apport /usr/share/apport

The only apport executable is under /usr/share/apport/apport

I think what you wanted is:
/usr/share/apport/apport-gtk -u 873809

And that is what I managed to run.

[Bug 873809] [NEW] Natty to Oneric upgrade fails without error

2011-10-13 Thread earthforce_1
Public bug reported:

Tried:
sudo do-release-upgrade -d
sudo update-manager -d
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

All fail the same way:
Checking for a new ubuntu release
Get:1 Upgrade tool signature [198 B]

Get:2 Upgrade tool [1164 kB]

Fetched 1164 kB in 0s (0 B/s)

extracting 'oneiric.tar.gz'
authenticate 'oneiric.tar.gz' against 'oneiric.tar.gz.gpg'

After that - nothing. No error message is apparent.

[Bug 678150] Re: When selecting btrfs for root filesystems, grub doesn't use UUIDs

2010-11-25 Thread earthforce_1
Fortunately, I was aware I needed a separate /boot and didn't hit that
particular trap.

But for as long as booting from btrfs is unsupported, it would make
sense for the installer to detect this and either create its own /boot
in automated mode, or when manually partitioning, prevent the user from
creating a configuration that won't boot.

Fairly sure this is just lack of crossfire support in the open source
radeon KMS drivers. But just to check, have you successfully booted
crossfire in any other configurations or other versions of Ubuntu?

In any case, now that modesetting is handled by the kernel, this is a
kernel wishlist so I'm refiling there. However, this type of work is
normally done upstream so it'd be better to file this bug at
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/ against radeon.

Also, when filing bug reports please attach necessary logs. A handy
tool to do this after a bug is filed is apport-collect. Please run:

  apport-collect 678148

Thanks ahead of time.

2010-11-22 Thread earthforce_1
I haven't tried this with earlier Ubuntu versions - this card was only
just supported in 10.04, and I only had two available to try as of a few
days ago. I could try booting the live CD and see if the nomodeset is
still required?

As per your suggestion, I will also open an account at
bugs.freedesktop.org - thanks!

[Bug 678150] [NEW] When selecting btrfs for root filesystems, grub doesn't use UUIDs

2010-11-21 Thread earthforce_1
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub-installer

Background:
I have a GA-X58A-UD7 motherboard, and wanted to plug my boot SSD into one of
the SATA3 slots, and use the SATA2 connections for external drives. It was
also convenient to do so because of mechanical interference between the SATA
cables and the graphics card - the cables are of limited length, and they route
better if the external back panel connector is routed to the first SATA plug.
So my boot drive shows up as a higher /dev/sd#, usually e or f.

I created a separate EXT4 partition for /boot and used btrfs for the
root file system, as well as /usr and /var which are mounted on separate
drives.

When I did the install and booted all was well at first, until I tried
to boot with an external drive or USB thumb drive plugged in. The
system would then fail to find its root partition or one of the other
drives. I found that grub was configured to search for root on a fixed
/dev/sd# instead of using UUIDs. Obviously this would fail if another
drive was inserted and the drive letters move.

** Affects: grub-installer (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

2010-08-14 Thread earthforce_1
I am using the latest version now. I have long since retired the monitor and
don't have it anymore, so you might as well close the bug.

Subject: [Bug 149626] Re: Need setup for Compaq P1100 monitor

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to
look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many
changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem
may have been fixed with some of the updates. Can you try with the
latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

[Bug 534813] Re: No video with Radeon HD5970 on 64 bit Karmic

2010-05-08 Thread earthforce_1
Yes, it is fixed in Lucid. I upgraded on the hope it would be fixed,
and eventually it was shortly before release.

- Thanks.

[Bug 333271] Re: Hard hangs desktop on launch (Jaunty)

2010-04-30 Thread earthforce_1
By the way, I apologize if it seemed I was being abrupt - I really
appreciate it being looked at, the timing was just surprising because
this was 2 releases ago, and I have filed a few bugs under Lucid which
haven't been attended to. (Though I am sure they have much bigger fish
to fry)

No, I didn't mean to be - I am just surprised at the sudden attention to
this out of the blue. The truth is I had actually moved on and
forgotten about it. I'm surprised it wasn't closed ages ago. Yes, it
is a good thing it is fixed.
