[Bug 946943] Re: idn: info page is a copy of man page

2012-03-05 Thread era
Verified that the problem also exists in 1.23-2 (Ubuntu 12.04 live
beta).

There doesn't actually appear to be an info page in the package. I
suppose it ought to be included, unless its license is problematic or
something (in which case the fix would be to remove the pointer to the
documentation from the SEE ALSO section of the manual page).

[Bug 946943] [NEW] idn: info page is a copy of man page

2012-03-05 Thread era
Public bug reported:

This has been a long-standing bug with many package which have
documentation in Info format. The manual page directs you to info, but
info provides a copy of the same manual page, rather than the full
manual.

I'm not sure what the correct resolution should be. I know that the
coreutils used to suffer from this, too, but apparently fixed it
somehow. Perhaps the longer-term solution would involve fixing the info
package somehow.

$ man idn | tail -n 12 | head -n 8

the info and idn programs are properly installed at your site, the com‐

This looks slightly like a data corruption bug which appears to be
connected to ext4. Unfortunately, your Dmesg.txt attachment did not
contain this information because it has been flooded with what looks
like debugging information from your wifi driver. Do you think you
could add the information from the command "mount" as an attachment to
this bug report? Thanks!

[Bug 890688] [NEW] 50git-core.el loads nothing on emacs 23.1.1

2011-11-15 Thread era
Public bug reported:

I installed git-core and expected the Emacs support to also load.
However, it contains a hedge condition which prevents it from loading on
Emacs 23. Curiously, the comment states that the Git stuff is already
included in Emacs 23, but I find that this is not the case with the
Emacs 23.1.1 we have on Ubuntu Lucid.

Perhaps I am overlooking something obvious; in any case, the obvious
workaround seems to work for me;

(let ((emacs-version "22"))
  (load-file "/etc/emacs/site-start.d/50git-core.el"))

I notice that the Emacs support has been split out to git-el in newer
versions of Ubuntu, but I'm posting this so that others who have the
same problem can at least find a discussion of it.

There also seems to be a problem with xemacs21 which appears to be

[Bug 873810] Re: could not install dictionaries-common when upgrading to ubuntu 11.10

2011-10-17 Thread era
Sorry for the crude answer. As you can imagine, the Oneiric release
shakes out a whole lot of bugs which ought to have been discovered
during alpha and beta testing, but which still only now begin to show.
Because of the large number of new bugs to process, I neglected to
include detailed triage instructions; it is obviously too late now, but
for future reference, on a working system, it would have been a simple
apport-collect command to add the missing logs; see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Responses#Missing_Apport_Information (but
then on the other hand, on a properly working system, they would have
been included automatically).

Obviously, if you have reinstalled your system, the problem you reported
cannot be investigated with any accuracy any longer. In such cases, the
proper way to proceed would be to tag this case as Invalid and close it.
That is not to imply that your pain and frustration are unimportant,
just that this bug tracker's workflow considers as valid only bugs which
can meaningfully be investigated.

If it is any consolation, your diagnosis of errors with *.pem files
coupled with similar reports from others point to a possible problem
with the ca-certificates package. This may or may not have been the
root cause for the problems you experienced, but your input helps set
the priority for looking into the apparent bug in this particular
package.

My apologies for not taking the time to give you proper instructions for
following up on this. I hope this incident and how I mishandled it will
not have harmed your trust in Ubuntu.

[Bug 398009] Re: global: pkg fails to configure if FQDN unknown

2011-10-07 Thread era
I do not seem to have permission to nominate for SRU. Nevertheless,
subscribing ubuntu-sru.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: global

  Package: global
  Version: 5.7.1-1

The following command in the postinst fails:

  hostname --fqdn

  outputing this:

  hostname: Unknown host

Indeed, my fqdn was unknown at the time, but that shouldn't
have caused my upgrade to Jaunty to fail.

+ [Impact]
+ This bug causes upgrades to fail. At this time, the bug has 23 duplicates,
and there is a steady trickle of reports from affected users on Lucid and other
old releases.
+
+ While there are no reverse dependencies, Apt reports the upgrade as
+ failed, and dpkg reports broken packages.
+
+ [Development Fix]
+ Package 5.7.1-2 contains this patch:
+
+ --- global-5.7.1/debian/global.postinst
+ +++ global-5.7.1/debian/global.postinst
+ @@ -2,7 +2,7 @@
+ set -e
+  if [ "$1" = "configure" ];
+ then
+ - HOST=`hostname --fqdn`
+ + HOST=$(hostname --fqdn) || HOST="localhost"
+ htconfig -I -a http://${HOST}/cgi-bin/gsearch.cgi -p
/var/lib/gsearch/pathdata /usr/lib/cgi-bin
+ fi
+
+ The only other change is 5.7.1-2 is an update of the Depends: in the
+ control file.
+
+ [Stable Fix]
+ See [Development Fix]
+
+ [Test Case]
+ The postinst script should succeed on a system where /etc/hostname contains
an unqualified hostname.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Fail to identify how this could be harmful. (They all say that, don't they?)

[Bug 398009] Re: global: pkg fails to configure if FQDN unknown

2011-10-07 Thread era
This bug keeps getting a steady trickle of duplicates from Lucid users.
I will be trying to get an SRU for this. The changes in 5.7.1-2 are
very minor; other than the fix for this bug, the dependencies have been
updated. Thus a backport might also be feasible as an alternative.

[Bug 303269]

2011-08-06 Thread Era+mozilla
> BTW: was all text entered in this thread spell checked ? ;-)

Clearly the OP used a French spelling dictionary when originally
reporting this bug (^:

Note that the majority of the non-English sites I come across seem to
specify English as their language. Developers are not always aware that
there is a setting that they need to change, and some tools are hard-
coded to output a template which specifies English, so that the site
owner cannot override it even if they wanted to. Hence there needs to
be (a) a manual override for the spelling dictionary; and / or (b)
perhaps a heuristic to determine what language a page "really" is in, to
cope with the real world as well as the W3C specifications. I suppose
(b) needs to be a separate bug report, once this one is fixed and
deployed.

This looks like a problem with the update manager rather than with
dictionaries-common, and there are similar errors earlier in the
transcript for entirely unrelated packages. The first error seems to be
from apparmor installation, which could conceivably hose a lot of
completely unrelated packages after it. Was update-maneger interrupted
or did it crash or something like that?

[Bug 513428] Re: XEmacs does not default to use UTF-8 for UTF8 locales

2011-07-25 Thread era
> Is anybody interested in fixing this???

Realistically, not a lot of Xemacs bugs seem to get a lot of attention
these days. However, if you can supply a tested patch (perhaps a port
from OpenSuSE, perhaps submitted upstream to Debian) your chances of
seeing a fix improve dramatically, but even then, Xemacs by itself, and
Xemacs on Ubuntu seems to be stuck in limbo without an active
maintainer.

Please understand that this is a comment from an interested bystander; I
have no inside information about Emacs, Xemacs, or Ubuntu.

haml-elisp appears to be incompatible with xemacs21. The fix is not too
hard, but should be taken upstream. In the meantime, if you can get by
without xemacs21, it should continue to work with GNU emacs (at least
emacs23, I hope).

[Bug 617934] Re: package haml-elisp (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2011-06-21 Thread era
Upstream bug http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=557190
appears to attempt to address this, but is a fix for emacs23. Somehow
this still affects emacs22.
http://packages.ubuntu.com/natty/ruby1.8-elisp says emacs23 but not
emacs22 satisfies the dependency on "emacsen". Is this an Ubuntu sync
error, or a problem in one of the upstream packages?

2011-06-15 Thread era
If you still have the patience, could you also do this with ltrace? The
strace-ff output clearly indicates that the error comes from within
emacs23 so perhaps you can limit ltrace to just emacs23 or nautilus. I
suspect the nvidia drivers but perhaps a library trace could shed more
light on this.

Many thanks for your patience and cooperation!

I am unconvinced this is a problem in Emacs. Googling turns up bugs in
audio applications etc but this seems somewhat out of line. The error
message comes from the libc dynamic loader so it could be pretty much
anything, but I am not at all convinced the problem is within Emacs
code.

[Bug 796381] Re: Too many language variants

2011-06-13 Thread era
I'm tempted to mark this as Confirmed, not because this particularly
bugs me, but because the reasoning makes sense, and the bug exposes a
fundamental design problem in dictionaries-common: what is installed is
installed system-wide, with no optoin for the user to override what is
being displayed.

Perhaps one could argue that this should be pushed down to individual
applications which use dictionaries-common, but most Ubuntu
installations are single-user (hard to say what sort of statistics to
assume for the Debian upstream) and should give the user control over
this type of thing.

[Bug 616159] Re: Japanese incorrect/archaic Kanji

2011-06-10 Thread era
The status Incomplete basically means there is information missing. In
this case I would actually say that it is correct, as (at least) one
crucial detail is missing, namely the names of the fonts. You allege
that some fonts are broken -- which ones? And others are correct --
which fonts would that be?

With this information, we could attempt to reproduce the problem,
although it is possible that there are still some factors which need to
be discovered before it can be reliably diagnosed.

2011-06-10 Thread era
Our apologies for taking so long to get back to you. Ubuntu bug triage
is handled mainly by volunteers, and sadly, not all packages get a lot
of attention all the time.

I suspect this to be a compatibility problem with xemacs21. If you
still have this problem, and don't require xemacs21, uninstalling that
is probably a feasible workaround.

Which xemacs21 variant are you running? I am asking because of

2011-06-08 Thread era
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 515630 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/515630

I'm afraid your attempt at resolving the problem did not really help.
The various xemacs21 packages are closely related; the superfluous
problem that xemacs21-support could not be configured needs to be
resolved, rather than worked around.

Quoting the attached DpkgTerminalLog.gz:
> slime-autodoc doesn't work with XEmacs

> xemacs exiting

This is what needs to be addressed. You can work around this by uninstalling
slime, then installing xemacs21. If you crucially require slime, perhaps you
can install the Maverick version instead, or find (or request) a backport for
Lucid.

This particular bug has already been reported and is a duplicate of bug
#515630, so it is being marked as such. Please look at the other bug
report to see if there is any missing information that you can provide,

further discussion regarding the bug should occur in the other report.

certainly seems closer to what I am looking at in bug #582341).

The upstream "Fix Released" really only means they removed the broken
"see also", not that there is now a useful man page.

[Bug 263505]

2011-06-07 Thread Era+mozilla
Yes, this is still identical under 4.0.1 (unsurprisingly, and trivially
reproducible). Reproduced in VirtualBox fresh install of Ubuntu 11.04
(still had Firefox 4.0.0) and Windows 4.0.1 with a fresh profile.

> Could someone with "canconfirm" privileges please assess this bug?

Still topical. Thanks in advance.

[Bug 775369] Re: Update manager removes xscreensaver and replaces with gnome-screensaver

2011-06-02 Thread era
Thanks for the link, I was vaguely familiar with the criticisms against
gnome-screensaver but it's good to have a reference here.

It's probably moot to argue (in this bug) about whether or not ubuntu-
desktop should or should not depend on gnome-screensaver, but the fact
that you successfully replaced it, and it reverted your preference when
you upgraded, is a bug. I'm not sure where it should be properly filed
so I'm leaving both tasks open.

(I originally created a second task because there doesn't seem to be a
way in Launchpad to reassign from a non-Ubuntu project to a package
within the Ubuntu project. Maybe there is a way but if so, I could not
discover it.)

For completeness, could you still confirm whether the upgrade actually
removed the xscreensaver package from your system, or just replaced your
preferences to use gnome-screensaver but left xscreensaver (nominally)
installed on your system? The former would be a bug in its own right,
but I suspect the case here is the latter.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This particular bug has already been reported and is a
duplicate of bug #533549, so it is being marked as such. Please look at
the other bug report to see if there is any missing information that you
can provide, or to see if there is a workaround for the bug.
Additionally, any further discussion regarding the bug should occur in
the other report. Feel free to continue to report any other bugs you may
find.

[Bug 775369] Re: Update manager removes xscreensaver and replaces with gnome-screensaver

2011-05-30 Thread era
This is hardly a bug in update-manager. The output of "aptitude why
gnome-screensaver" on my system indicates that ubuntu-desktop depends on
gnome-screensaver. You may be able to work around this by installing a
dummy equivs package, or perhaps by setting the status of xscreensaver
to "hold".  I don't see why your xscreensaver gets removed, though;
nothing in ubuntu-desktop or gnome-screensaver appears to declare a
conflict. Perhaps you could expand on this (and perhaps also link to a
separate bug explaining why you think gnome-screensaver is broken)?

You appear to have a non-Ubuntu version of install-info, probably
because you installed texlive at some point.

I will mark this bug as a duplicate of bug #630326; as a workaround, you
can try to remove the rogue install-info from your path and retry the
upgrade.

Your log file also contains a CUPS error near the end, but perhaps you
already managed to resolve that independently.

[Bug 626796] Re: Please sync emacs-snapshot from emacs.orebokech.com

2011-05-29 Thread era
Please note bug #789075 and bug #789271 as support for either doing
something about this package, or else to drop it from Ubuntu.

Given that there is a sporadically-maintained third-party PPA which
tracks upstream Emacs better than this package, it might actually be a
disservice to Emacs users to pretend to support this old package if it's
not actively kept up to date.

For the record, the PPA is now at http://emacs.naquadah.org/
