2010-12-09 Thread ethana2
Fresh 10.10 install. This bug crashes chromium so much I switched to
Midori for a month.

It's not uncommon for me to stat chromium 7 times in one minute just
hoping it won't crash immediately after the 5th time or so. Usually I'm
not that lucky.

et...@hp-d530:~$ chromium-browser
process 2287: arguments to dbus_pending_call_free_data_slot() were incorrect,
assertion "*slot_p >= 0" failed in file dbus-pending-call.c line 748.
This is normally a bug in some application using the D-Bus library.

[Bug 674365] Re: Midori useragent does not specify full operating system

2010-11-13 Thread ethana2
Browser useragents really should be generated on first run or at install
time using $ cat /etc/issue

Altering a package just to fix a useragent is the wrong way to go about
it entirely, but it's the way everyone has been doing it for a long,
long time.

If it would please everyone, I would gladly apply $50 to the upstream
development of $ cat /etc/issue - based useragent generation. I just
really doubt anyone would accept that solution either. This isn't an
issue I expect the community to be particularly interested in, as it
pertains primarily to branding. If the community bears the full burden
of maintaining the package, I don't expect them to try to fix this.
Wontfix is fantastic, as long as the bug record remains accessible for
maybe a few years.

Epiphany identified as Debian until a few months ago, and I filed a bug

As long as somebody within Canonical has been made aware of the bug,
which given the long list of notified persons I think is probable,
nothing else needs to be done by either you nor me. They know what
they're doing.

[Bug 674365] [NEW] Midori useragent does not specify full operating system

2010-11-11 Thread ethana2
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: midori

Midori on Ubuntu 10.10 as of November 11, 2010 identifies itself as running on
Linux, but does not specify Ubuntu.
Since Canonical has fixed this bug in Chromium and Epiphany, Midori is probably
the most popular open source browser for gnome that is still affected, besides
firefox pre-releases. The useragent I'm using in the current version of Midori
is

Midori/0.2 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US) WebKit/531.2+ (KHTML, like Gecko)
Ubuntu/10.10

[Bug 291463] Re: gnome-panel: main menu: arrow icon blemish

2010-09-10 Thread ethana2
Turns out for the end user to fix this on their own machine, which its
inelegance would almost drive them to do, they have to literally modify
source code and recompile the applet. Seriously. For one boolean.

Anybody have any luck changing the boolean with ghex2 instead of going
through a recompile? I've had to use ghex2 to un-cripple Compiz' genie
effect before, it's a lot quicker than rebuilding a package and doesn't
have nearly as many environmental dependencies.

Since Ubuntu users are early adopters, I believe this bug affects around
30-40% of us. I've used firefox prereleases and epiphany for years, and
even my mom is an avid Chrome fan. I notice more geeks using Chrome
these days than I notice using Firefox.

This bug, by way of stastistics-collecting sites, is now deterring
development of proprietary applications for ubuntu, and thereby its end-
user adoption, on an absolutely colossal scale by making the Ubuntu
market appear significantly smaller than it actually is.

[Bug 584758] Re: Ubuntu web browsers do not properly identify host

2010-05-23 Thread ethana2
Web browsers created in the United States, such as Netscape Navigator
and Internet Explorer, use the letters U, I, and N, to specify the
encryption strength in the user agent string. Until the US government
allowed encryption with keys longer than 40 bits to be exported, in
1996, vendors shipped various browser versions with different encryption
strengths. "U" stands for "USA" (for the version with 128-bit
encryption), "I" stands for "International"--the browser has 40-bit
encryption and can be used anywhere in the world--and "N" stands (de
facto) for "None" (no encryption).[5] Following the lifting of export
restrictions, most vendors supported 256-bit encryption.

[Bug 584758] [NEW] Ubuntu web browsers do not properly identify host

2010-05-23 Thread ethana2
Public bug reported:

As a consequence of not identifying their host OS properly, Ubuntu
browsers fail to identify it correctly in all cases but one (stock
Firefox).

As a result, 1/3 or more of Ubuntu users are not correctly recognized by
online statistics.

There are two possible solutions:
Properly, promptly, and consistently package the latest versions of every
popular browser for Ubuntu with correct useragents, or
Get upstream browser developers to use uname to set host OS useragent
information.

[Bug 393997] [NEW] gtk apps' menu bars' top pixel row not clickable

2009-06-30 Thread ethana2
Public bug reported:

Trying to replace gnome-globalmenu with xmonad-- Java, Windows, and KDE
applications work great..
...but I really like my GTK applications. When the window an application

[Bug 390433] [NEW] GIMP doesn't play nice with gnome globalmenu

2009-06-21 Thread ethana2
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gimp

http://code.google.com/p/gnome2-globalmenu/

Correct behavior: menu is visible in top panel regardless of which GIMP
window is in focus.

Because not everyone uses a globalmenu, this may have to be a toggle added to
GIMP.
This is a requisite for replacing PS + OS X with GIMP + Ubuntu. (Although I
have been getting by with focus-on-hover set in compiz, I'm not the average
graphic designer, and it's still very annoying.)

Do not edit my bug descriptions, troll.

** Description changed:

- Description revised Aug 22, 2008.
-
- The Colemak design includes a mapping of the key 66, which is the wrong year
to add the fifth block of Maya sculas backspace behavior.
- This mapping should be removed from the provision of and backward caps
colemak a behavior, you must ADIRS year Gnome, KDE and Xfce.
- Although would be nice if the colemak design or default to this behavior
blocking caps lock is not essential, as it is fairly easy to change it.
- It is possible that the reverse will be the first block of caps lock to
require repeat the behavior.
-
- (sorry for my english)
+ The colemak layout includes a mapping for key 66, which is the Wrong Way
+ to add the backspace caps lock key behavior. This mapping should be
+ removed from the colemak layout and a backspace caps behavior should be
+ added to gnome, KDE, and xfce. While it would be nice if the colemak

+ it's easy enough to just change it. It is possible that backspace would

[Bug 375780] [NEW] Epiphany package name needs to be changed.

2009-05-12 Thread ethana2
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: epiphany

The package name for the epiphany web browser should be 'epiphany'. For
an example of correctly package naming, refer to Fedora, Suse, Mandriva,
Foresight, Arch Linux, Frugalware, OpenBSD, or Gentoo. If OpenSolaris
had epiphany in its repositories, it would call the package 'epiphany'
too. ..'cause that's what it is.

I $ install epiphany on nearly every ubuntu instance I admin because
firefox doesn't work with gnome-globalmenu, and then, after I do, the
browser isn't there. Oh yeah... it's that one little game.

The epiphany game package should be named 'epiphany-game'. Most people
who install it will be doing so through gnome-app-install anyways.

[Bug 72321] Re: Include Brother scanner drivers (brother2, brother)

2009-01-27 Thread ethana2
Brother put forth the effort they thought they needed to to get their
hardware working under linux based operating systems. If we're going to
disregard said effort, we owe them an explanation and a clear request as
to what more we need from them. It seems they're rather responsive. :)

As an end user, I rely on the binary nVidia driver already. I'm not
going to switch operating systems. I'm not going to switch scanners.
Users will do what they need to do, and the stated objective of the sane
project is to make scanner access easy. The driver code may be butt
ugly, but as long as that code doesn't put other scanner drivers that
are already part of sane at risk also, I don't see how including those
drivers can make anything any worse. The sooner they're pulled, the
sooner the code can be brought up to project standards.

Assuming, though, that you can't ship the actual driver, please at least ship
udev rules, as per Thomas' request.
Thomas : how do you find what udev rules to use with your scanner? I may be
able to run xsane with user permissions if I can at least get that all figured
out..

scanner driver, blehh.
Years of frustration does murder to a person's spelling.

As usual, I will provide any and all information from my machine anyone
needs, not that anyone needs any. The DCP-7020 is simply not in the
list that Ubuntu uses to set up Brother printers and scanners. It just
needs to be added to that list; I can't do it, but for someone out there
it has got to be trivial.

[Bug 258058] Re: Brother DCP 7020 uses wrong drivers

2009-01-16 Thread ethana2
Jaunty Alpha 3.

I plug my printer in and it immediately selects the wrong driver.
Unlike, say, a Human Being, I know it's wrong. I set it to the HL-1250
Driver as I do with every Ubuntu release with this same old lingering
bug. I print a test page and, of course, it works.

I open xsane.
Failed to open device 'v4l:/dev/video0': Invalid argument
As usual.

You try to run XSane as ROOT, that really is DANGEROUS!
Do not send any bug reports when you have any problems while running XSane as
root: YOU ARE ALONE!

Gee thanks, XSane. I didn't already know that. I've seen that every time I've
gone to scan something for the last two years, I'm alone and unloved, I think
I've got it by now.
Ope, same error. I guess I've got to navigate Brother's site and download
their Completely GPL licensed, already .deb packaged, fully functional and
stable printer scanner. I don't have time for that right now. Next bug.

Low hanging fruit if I ever saw it. Cleanup in Aisle 12.

[Bug 188308] Re: colemak is broken

2009-01-16 Thread ethana2
Ubuntu Jaunty alpha 3:

Still no colemak keymap option in the pre-load menu on the LiveCD.
To get colemak working in Jaunty, select country USA, variant Colemak, make it
the only layout in the list, and hit 'apply system wide'. I gave up on proper
repeating backspace, I don't think gnome loves us.

If you still use key repeat at all (I do not, mostly because of gnome's
colemak problems),

xset r 66
will make it repeat.

[Bug 317959] [NEW] shift switcher plugin needs post-initiation-only switching actions

2009-01-16 Thread ethana2
Public bug reported:

Usage case:

My compiz is configured to, when my cursor moves to the screen bottom,
drop into CoverFlow with shift switcher. I can then navigate the open
windows with the horizontal scroll strip on my touchpad. Alt+tab also
switches through windows, and the plugin stays engaged as long as I hold
down alt. So far so good.

Now I attempt to horizontally scroll in some app, and everything goes
crazy. Single window switching with the scroll bar is, in my
experience, worthless. I need to be able to bind the horizontal
touchpad scroll bar so that it cycles windows in the shift switcher only
while it is initiated.
