[Bug 674116] [NEW] Internet Radio doesn't function when banshee launched by music applet
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: banshee I added this stream: http://ktru.org/audiometa/listen3.m3u to banshee. At first I thought that banshee internet radio wasn't working. I tried all the other streaming urls at http://ktru.org/ (they have 3 mp3 streams, 2 AAC, 1 real audio, 1 wma), and none of them worked. They had, however, been working when I'd previously been using rhythmbox. I verified they were still working in rhythmbox. I didn't see anything relevant in the banshee log...so I tried running banshee from the command line. lo-and-behold, the radio worked. I changed the music- applet to use the banshee-1 command instead of DBus...still didn't work. I also tried banshee command, still no love. So, it works from the command line, works from the Applications menu. I then went to the music-applet page, saw that it's being replaced with panflute. I installed panflute...still had the same issue. I suspect there's something about how Banshee reports to the applets when it starts a stream which causes Banshee to end up failing to play the stream. All the Banshee tells me is unspecified error. The work around, of course, is to not use the music applet or panflute to run banshee. However, the player should probably be able to play the streams regardless of how it was invoked. Hence the bug-report. Hrm...well, no, I don't think I can. I don't get anything written to log when running from the applet. [Bug 599141] [NEW] system crashes while copying files
Public bug reported: I've been trying to copy files from two different drives I have to another drive. 1 drive I'm copying from is a 500gb Western Digital sata drive, single partition, NTFS. The other is a 1TB WD sata drive, 2 500gb partitions, the one I'm copying from is NTFS. I'm copying to two different ext4 partitions on a different WD 1TB sata drive. Initially I was trying from in a terminal window (doing a cp -r *). That, however, froze my system multiple times. Nothing would work, including ctrl- alt-f#. Only reset would do anything. I initially suspected that perhaps my video driver or something else X related was to blame, so I exited into a terminal (ctrl-alt-f1), stopped gdm (sudo service gdm stop), and tried again. This time, I got a log on the screen, I took a picture, which I will attach. I have grepped all my logs in /var/log and can not find the text I see in my screen grab anywhere in any of the logs, so I think that it did not make it to disk. If, however, there is somewhere I can find the log, I'd be happy to include the real log instead of a screen grab. It is worth noting that the drive I'm copying to is new...and I had tremendous difficulty partitioning it with ubuntu. I had very similar behaviour to when I was trying to copy. To wit, every time I would try to partition the drive, my system would freeze, and I would be unable to do anything except power cycle. I ended up using gparted-live to partition the drive. SMART reports all four drives, including the new drive, are good. I have even gone so far as to run the LONG SMART self- test on all drives, and they are fine. Also worth noting that I tried doing the partition with BOTH ubiquity AND gparted in Ubuntu and both failed. The difference was that when gparted failed, it didn't freeze the system. Ubiquity would freeze the system every time I tried (3 or 4 times). However, gparted live (0.4.6-01) worked fine, took only a handful of minutes to create the two partitions I wanted. I've eliminated the x driver, or anything else X. I think there is something happening at the kernel level which is causing the crash, but I don't know how to pinpoint it any further. I have copied off all my /var/logs into a different directory so that I can reference any log you might be interested in post-crash. Please let me know what else I can do. Every previous time I'd been using cp -r * /destinationDir. I recently tried with Nautilus, and it got a little further (gigabyte wise). Perhaps useful, though, is that I typed ctrl-alt-l to lock the screen as it seemed like it was making progress. Rather than locking the screen, it completely froze the computer. I bring it up simply in case that helps jog someone's thinking about what might be going on. Is there something about the chain of code which handles that command which could be responsible for freezing the computer? I noticed the IRQ in the screen grab I attached earlier...is ctrl-alt-l also handled via an interrupt handler which could be playing a role? -- system crashes while copying files https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/599141 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Okay, so, just tried a few things. First, had a CD of Ubuntu 9.10 AMD64 Desktop which I booted from. I mounted two of the partitions, tried repeating the copy. It failed by freezing the system again. So, the bug exists in 9.10 as well. I also downloaded iso for i386 and AMD64 versions of 10.04 desktop (I'd installed via upgrade from 9.10 so I'd never downloaded the iso's). I decided to try with the i386 version first. Lo and behold, it failed...but it didn't freeze the system. Instead, the application (cp) exited with Killed. I checked kern.log and found a trace. [Bug 549723] Re: empathy doesn't autoconnect at startup
If Empathy is going to present itself to the user as though it is started (the Indicator panel), it should, in fact, be started. It is entirely misleading to have the status indications there and not have the actual application which sets them running. It's perfectly fine to have a Startup Applications entry for empathy and to have that be the way it starts; however, users should not have to go find that and put that in themselves. It should already be there. The flexibility goal of Linux would be met, users intuition about what is going on would be met, life would be good. :) It's no good putting nifty social networking features front-and-center and then telling users well, to use it, you actually have to go do this and type that, etc... [Bug 553282] Re: palimpsest / gnome-disk-utility stopped working normally from recently - incorrectly says that SMART is not available !!
This was a really ham-handed workaround. The percentage of users with SSDs has got to be under 1%, and to help them, you're going to risk the rest of your users losing data b/c they thought their system was monitoring their drive health and now it's not? Seems pretty stupid to me, but what do I know I only noticed this because I have a drive I thought might be going on the fritz, and went into palimpset to look at it, noticed no smart on ANY of my drives, and started digging. At the very least, the installation of the patch which disables SIGNIFICANT data safeguards should have caused a few flashing lights and, say, a dialogue which asks me if I actually have an SSD or am even thinking about SSD. -- palimpsest / gnome-disk-utility stopped working normally from recently - incorrectly says that SMART is not available !! https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/553282 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I suspect it's a volume issue. I find that if I'm using the facebook plugin for pidgin that it rises much more quickly. I think it's not a coincidence that I get VERY frequent notifications when using the facebook plugin (as people are often signing in and out). [Bug 433654] Re: [Karmic] Only one user has sound; no hw shows in Sound Preferences
FWIW, I determined that, at least in my case, this was manifesting in conjunction with usage of VirtualBox or VMWare. When I have a VM open in one user, sound becomes inaccessible to the other user(s). However (generally) if I log both users in without opening a VM, sound remains available to both users. It seems that some programs are using PulseAudio in such a way that it is blocking the other user from having sound. Some notes on usage: if both users are logged in and have sound, and one starts a VM, the other user will lose sound. However, once the VM is closed, the sound will be restored. If, however, one user logs in and opens a VM, and then the other user logs in, they won't show any sound device, and even if the other user closes the VM they will still not have sound unless they log out and back in. I tried the different audio options in VirtualBox (alsa, pulseaudio, etc), and it didn't seem to matter, they all exhibited this behavior. So...hopefully that helps. I could see someone looking at this and saying it's not an audio problem, it's a VirtualBox/VMWare issue, but I disagree. The audio should not be so susceptible to 3rd party applications borking it. -- [Karmic] Only one user has sound; no hw shows in Sound Preferences https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/433654 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Linux 2.6.31-17-generic #54-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 10 17:01:44 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux output from top, sorted by highest resident on down 2308 u1 20 0 2238m 1.2g 2376 S0 15.9 29:41.03 indicator-messa 2258 u1 20 0 1919m 993m 10m S0 12.4 1:53.42 indicator-apple 2209 u1 20 0 4757m 732m 13m S0 9.2 51:19.61 pidgin 2958 u2 20 0 1286m 705m 2328 S0 8.8 14:32.67 indicator-messa 2929 u2 20 0 1160m 528m 5800 S0 6.6 1:16.73 indicator-apple uptime 21:14:58 up 7 days, 10:48, 4 users, load average: 0.10, 0.40, 0.39 I have 8GB installed, those are my top 5 consumers of memory. I think the pidgin usage is rather high too, but clearly the Indicator stuff is taking the lions share. There are two users logged in (u1 and u2). Please make sure this isn't marked as fixed. From synaptic, I have indicator-applet -session 0.2.0-0ubuntu2, indicator-messages 0.2.6-0ubuntu1, and indicator-session 0.1.7-0ubuntu3. Hope that helps. -- Unreasonably high memory usage https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/369539 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 433654] Re: [Karmic] Only one user has sound; no hw shows in Sound Preferences
@Daniel, perhaps it is...I'll get the log for you (can't reboot at the moment, trying to get some work done). However, it's the EXACT same issue that has been described by others here who have provided verbose logs and for whom, so far as I can tell, there has been no explanation other than the one provided by Igor that it is HAL which may be defective by design. To wit, the first user to log in sees the audio device under Hardware in Sound Preferences; any other user who subsequently logs in while the first user is still logged in sees no hardware device for audio, and thus there is no sound for those users. If the first user logs out, the audio device is freed up and can be grabbed by another user when switched to. One of two things *should* be taking place and isn't: either the audio device should be freed up when a user switch occurs, or the audio device should be always available to all users. The current behaviour where it seems the first user gets an exclusive lock on the device is not correct. -- [Karmic] Only one user has sound; no hw shows in Sound Preferences https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/433654 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 433654] Re: [Karmic] Only one user has sound; no hw shows in Sound Preferences
This is probably my biggest gripe with Ubuntu at this point. I switched all my home machines to Ubuntu, and my wife has been mostly okay with it, but she's had a few gripes...the fact that sound wasn't working for her was a big one. My workaround has been to make sure that her account is logged in first so that it can grab the sound device, then I can log myself in...but it's a true pita that I can't get any sound for my user as well. I really don't care so much about the sound keeps playing even when user not active vs sound only plays for currently active user (although I think it should be configurable), but sound only works for one user period is a non-starter. -- [Karmic] Only one user has sound; no hw shows in Sound Preferences https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/433654 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 54273] Re: USB device not accepting address: error -110
I'm gettting the unable to enumerate error in a brand new build of 9.10, AMD 64. The attached file contains uname, version signature, lsusb, dmesg. It's definitely a problem. The device in question, so far as I can tell, is my internal USB card-reader (its activity light is going like gangbusters). I recognize that this particular bug report is problematic due to it's meta-bug nature, but please don't lose sight of the fact that there are some real issues at work. Thanks. ** Attachment added: uname, version signature, lsusb, dmesg http://launchpadlibrarian.net/34911930/all.out -- USB device not accepting address: error -110 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/54273 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
