[Bug 1891318] Re: [SRU] Update to vala 0.48.16 in focal

2021-07-08 Thread Princeton Ferro
Just chiming in here that tools like the Vala Language Server
(https://github.com/Prince781/vala-language-server) depend on recent
bugfixes in Vala. Going through with this proposal would allow people to
develop Vala software on Focal without having to rely on PPAs.

2020-07-21 Thread Rafael Ferro
I also had this problem and the suggested workaround helped solving it.
Actually, it additionally solved a delay issue on login screen when
recovering from suspension and a delay on xdotool commands. Is it
possible to reopen this bug report or should I open a new one?

[Bug 1738400] [NEW] Vagrant bionic 64 with virtualbox image doesn't start network correctly

2017-12-15 Thread Luis Ferro
Public bug reported:

When starting the image box 'ubuntu/bionic64' (v20171206.0.0) for
virtualbox in MacOS, I get this error:

sed: can't read /etc/network/interfaces: No such file or directory

This may is related with:

https://github.com/fgrehm/vagrant-cachier/issues/175

The solution to add the configuration on Vagrantfile did worked for me:

config.cache.synced_folder_opts = {
owner: "_apt",
group: "_apt"
}

So now just need to wait for the final box version for xenial.

Looks like the _apt issue is a different one:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/aptitude/+bug/1543280/comments/16

And looks to be related to some confusion of the sources setup by
default.

Still getting this error, and creating the user / home directory /
remove temporary folder.

What i noticed is that the install is with xenial and the offending
folder is:

/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_yakkety_InRelease

Which btw doesn't exist.

That is for ubuntu 16.10 (yakkety) not the ubuntu version that was
installed 16.04 (xenial).

Somehow it feels wrong to try to install packages of a future version
into a recently released LTS.

'/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_yakkety_InRelease'

The other issues look to be all fixed.

[Bug 1543280] Re: apt-get fails withCan't drop privileges for downloading as file + couldn't be accessed by user '_apt'. - pkgAcquire::Run (13: Permission denied)

2016-04-21 Thread Luis Ferro
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1522675 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1522675

Please check:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=808802

# add unprivileged user for the apt methods

adduser --force-badname --system --home /nonexistent \
--no-create-home --quiet _apt || true

# Fixup any mistake in the home directory of the _apt user

if dpkg --compare-versions "$2" lt-nl 1.1~exp10~; then
usermod --home /nonexistent _apt

This is due, as the message implies the inexistence of the user _apt
(which somehow is now required and not preexistent on the user list).

Previously all those folders where owned by root:root, now they are
ubuntu:ubuntu and the synaptic bug looks to imply that it should be _apt
user now.

Then i suppose that a new bug is entered into synaptics and linked to
this bug so that users affected by this can see that it is being handled
insted of "ignored" by a invalid / triaged status?

Just tested on the "release" version of xenial and it still happens.

[Bug 1573015] [NEW] xenial cloudimage with missing hostname on hosts

2016-04-21 Thread Luis Ferro
Public bug reported:

Install Vagrant / Virtualbox

On Terminal run:

$> vagrant init

Edit the Vagrantfile to change the box name from "base" to
"ubuntu/xenial64"

Then on the terminal again do:

$> vagrant up

After installing do:

$> vagrant ssh

$> sudo su

You will get a message stating: "sudo: unable to resolve host ubuntu-
xenial"

The reason for this message is because the entry on /etc/hostname (which
have "ubuntu-xenial") doesn't exist on /etc/hosts

To Fix:

Edit the /etc/hosts:

$> sudo vim /etc/hosts (for instance)

And on the entry:

127.0.0.1 localhost

Change to:

127.0.0.1 localhost ubuntu-xenial

[Bug 1563791] [NEW] cnf file ignored

2016-03-30 Thread Luis Ferro
Public bug reported:

File named mysqld.cnf on folder /etc/mysql/conf.d with content:

[mysqld]
character-set-server=utf8
collation-server=utf8_general_ci

Is ignored altogether, albeit the configuration of my.cnf stated that
all files on that folder is read.

Placing the file on /etc/mysql/mysql.conf.d (with different name
naturally as there is one already there) doesn't work either.

Renaming the files with starting numbers doesn't affect either (placing
the stated file before or after the existing ones).

The only way to change the those server settings are by adding those
configurations into the existing /etc/mysql/mysql.conf.d/mysqld.cnf
which defeats the purpose of having configuration folders and allow
overridings.

Also, it would be useful to have an equivalent symlink configuration
system as it happens with apache2 (and other software packages) to turn
on/off functionality.

[Bug 1066529] Re: All jobs stopped, epson_inkjet_printer_filter failed

2014-06-19 Thread ferro
Epson driver just does not work. I tried Ubuntu 14.04 with all available
drivers, i always got filter error. If you try to call the filter from
bash it says: "no such file or directory". I compiled the filter myself,
then a cammand line call gave me "insufficient options" which looked
promising, but the filter did not work. Unfortunately there is zero
documentation for the filter, so i could not get it to spit out a log,
althoug the source code has some debugging code. Openprinting.org gives
information that is just a lie. This printer driver does not work. As
last resort i chose "turboprint", a 30 EUR software which is not GPL but
at least worked perfectly from the beginning. Even printing PDF files on
a DVD surface on an Epson XP-750 works perfectly. I am running
turboprint on a dedicated print server on Ubuntu 14.04 without X, this
works perfectly, not the driver provided by epson.

[Bug 1275136] [NEW] font substitution fails if font name contains a dash

2014-01-31 Thread ferro
Public bug reported:

I have PDF that contain a font named Code-128, not embedded. Just installing
this font does not help: it is not picked properly and evince uses DejaVu for
rendering, which is bad for a barcode.
A fc-list does show the installed font. A fc-match does not work and always
returns "DejaVu Sans" "Book"

Expected: fontconfig picks the installed font and uses it for rendering
in evince. fc-match returns the font name it it matches, no matter what
character is contained in the name.

Tested on 12.04 and 13.10 (x86_64)

Temprary workaround i currently use:
I used fontforge to change the font by removing the dash in the font name. Then
i implemented a substitution for Code-128 to be substituted by Code128.

Result: evince displayed the font properly but fc-match still does not
work.

Unfortunately i have no influence on the PDF generation, they are
generated by a German Ministry of Interior and i have been struggling
for three years now to get them to create only PDF-A (fonts embedded),
but they refuse to implement that without giving meaningful arguments.
We, like many other companies are forced to utilize these buggy PDFs,
probably most companies use Windows+AdobeReader and don't have that
problem...

[Bug 1097732] Re: Green screen with color depth of 16 bits

2013-11-18 Thread ferro
My be this is an upstream bug? I have the same issue with this driver on
our thin clients that run debian wheezy on the terminal. I tried to
update the driver to the latest available openchrome 0.3.3 from x.org,
but this did not change anything. Anyway the dri driver was removed from
mesa distribution, which makes this driver pretty unusable. In my
opinion, the only options are to discard hardware or run vesa driver on
it.

This is an upstream problem, see http://mesa3d.sourceforge.net/systems.html
Openchrome dri driver in on the list of removed drivers from mesa distribution.
Same problems applies to all Linux Distributions that have more recent mesa

I ran into the same problem, as 50% if my thin clients here utilize openchrome

There is a quick fix for this issue, which is to add the full path of
the file in the ini file loading the extension.

Some extensions that give this error will load with this work around

[Bug 927952] Re: When I press the Print Screen button, it will not appear in "Save Screenshot" window.

2013-01-18 Thread ferro
I have a thin client environment - no way to have graphics hardware
acceleration. gnome-screenshot depends on gnome-shell but has no
dependency on the package. I cannot install gnome-shell i use the
fallback mode. As a work around i have installed the xfce4 screenshot
tool and just created a link named /usr/bin/gnome-screenshot pointing to
/usr/bin/xfce4-screenshooter. This way i get the xfce4 screenshot dialog
by pressing , which is working good for me. With more of these
defective gnome and unity developments i will be forced to completely
change to xfce sooner or later

I have here two machines that are hardware identical, same xubuntu

differences are some user applications, and what is more fundamental is
that the one that does not have the bug effect is a pure 64 bit

[Bug 10910] Re: Default page size for printing is letter

2012-06-07 Thread ferro
You can also lock down these settings, then these settings override
user-settings. To do that you have to use
lockPref("print.print_paper_name", "iso_a4"); instead of
pref("print.print_paper_name", "iso_a4");. This has been improved, as it did
not work properly with older versions of firefox.

[Bug 10910] Re: Default page size for printing is letter

2012-06-07 Thread ferro
Add the prefs lines from #143 to the file /etc/firefox/syspref.js
instead of seperate files. I tested this on a Ubuntu 12.04 with firefox
13 and it works as defaults for user-settings that you create after that
change. It does not override user-settings that exists already! In this
case you can change these settings with #147. In #143 i am referring to
thunderbird. I hope this is not confusing, but this works equivalently
for firefox if you user /etc/firefox/pref instead of
/etc/thunderbird/pref. In theory you could also use
/usr/lib/firefox/defaults/pref for the settings but anything you change
here will be gone with the next firefox update.

adjust the parameters with that change, as they were a little different in
version 3. I named the file "aa_paper.js", i have others in that directory too,
like aa_proxy.js and aa_cache.js for variuous global settings. Files in that
directory are processed in reversed sort order (at least that waas like this in
version 3), therefore mine start with aa_ . File name must end with .js
When you test this, you should completely wipe or move the ~/.thunderbird
folder to make sure that user settings do not interfere, because they would
have preference over global settings.
hope that helps!

[Bug 10910] Re: Default page size for printing is letter

2012-05-30 Thread ferro
Try to put a file in /etc/thunderbird/pref, which is used by the ubuntu
thunderbird with the following content:

//
pref("print.print_landscape", false);
pref("print.print_paper_size_height", "297,00");
pref("print.print_paper_size_width", "210,00");
pref("print.print_paper_size_unit", 1);
pref("print.print_paper_size_type", 1);
pref("print.print_paper_name", "iso_a4");
//
pref("print.postscript.paper_name","iso_a4");
pref("print.postscript.orientation",   "portrait");

That should work as a default for the first use of a printer.

[Bug 997597] [NEW] pdftops crashes on signal 6

2012-05-10 Thread ferro
Public bug reported:

occasionally cups printing fails with printing pdf documents. Cups 1.5.2
running on oneiric. If the crash occurs depends on number of document
pages, number of requested print copies, and the content of the pdf. I
have a high rate of crashes with a document stream where a pdf is merged
with anoter pdf as watermark by using pdftk and then handed over via lpr
to the cups server. I had to discontinue usage of oneiric as cups
server, and rolled back to 11.10 for productive use.

i got the same crash with sweep, the strace looked very similar at the

[Bug 992855] [NEW] Side by side instalation with Windows 7 doesn't ask which disk to use to install.

2012-05-01 Thread Luis Ferro
Public bug reported:

LTS 12.04 Desktop 32bits

I tryed to install ubuntu on a machine that has 2 disks, the first an
SSD and another a normal one empty.

I requested side-by-side instalation but the installer didn't asked
where to install ubuntu, and instead of starting to install it on the
SSD, it started installing on the empty disk.

I believe that one should always be able to select which disk to

[Bug 961035] [NEW] cupsd crashes with Closing on unknown HTTP state 0

[Bug 939950] [NEW] Dual head failing with Radeon

2012-02-23 Thread Luis Ferro
Public bug reported:

I spent almost one week (not intensivelly) to fix AMD Radeon dual head
configuration.

This is for sure the most user unfriendlyness configuration i've ever
seen.

This where the steps i'd to use to be able to configure it (somewhat):

How to make latest AMD HD Radeon drivers to work on dual-head?

1. Download and install drivers

Drivers are available at:
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx

Select the options and download the driver

2. Setup drivers

Open a terminal option and run
sudo amd-driver-installer-xxx-xxx-x86.x86_64.run
sudo apt-get install gtk2-engines-pixbuf

sudo aticonfig --initial=dual-head -f
sudo aticonfig –set-pcs-str=”DDX,EnableRandR12,FALSE”

Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

There should exist two Section “Device”, one for device 0 and another for
device 1.
Copy the Option “UseFastTLS” “1” from device 0 to device 1. Device 1 should be
noted with a Screen 1 entry.

Force X to use the new configuration with:

sudo aticonfig --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf --tls=1

3. Reboot

4. Call amdccle

Call amdccle either from a terminal with:

gksu amdccle

or on the “app search” of Unity type “amd” and it should appear both
with and without administrative powers. Choose the one with
administrative powers.

On the Multi-Display choose:

“Multi-display desktop with display(s) 1 or 2, depending on which you
want to be the primary display. [they could have a flag on each display
to tick when you want to swap who is primary, easier to understand which
will be the primary]

5. Reboot
6. Repeat step 4 (no kidding, at first time, the multi-display will be setup as
clone not as we asked).
7. With lots of luck you ended up like me, with a dual-head computer and both
monitors working properly!

Notes:

If you don't issue the “dual-head” on the aticonfig, it may not pick the
second monitor.

[Bug 374078] Re: Double clicking a maximized window frame does not restore window

2012-02-23 Thread Luis Ferro
It happened to me with thunderbird.

Also when a window is maximized and you drag it out by click and push
from the top to the middle of the screen, nothing happens.

And when you just click on it, the close/minimize/maximize buttons
should appear but fail to do so.

Giving focus to the application (with either ALT+TAB or clicking on the
window) and then moving and touching the top of the screen fails to open
the application menu.

For me this problem is solved, at least AFollowing resettlement and

[Bug 364156] Re: powernow-k8: BIOS does not provide ACPI -PSS objects in a way that Linux understands

2011-07-20 Thread ferro
Got the same problem on all my sun v20z with upgradung from 8.04 to 11.04.
powernow used to work with 8.04, with 11.04 it does not, the fans are running
full speed. Kernel option noacpi did not change anything. The BIOS has no
option to set something related to ACPI and no updates are available. acpidump
on both versions are identical. powernowd is no more available, cpufreq
complains "No cpufreq supprt". For me, this is a showstopper, i probably have
to replace all hardware. This is very disappointing: ubuntu folks and kernel
folks keep blaming the BIOS - but Windows can do it on the same hardware ..

[Bug 788642] [NEW] pdf print job hangs abd blocks the queue

2011-05-26 Thread ferro
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups

We have some PDF files that jam the print queue on cups 1.4.6 (natty).
Identical print job is quickly printed on the same printer if it is printed
over a cups 1.4.4 (maverick). ps shows a process pstopdf (poppler-utils) that
runs infinite with 100% cpu usage. Changing the printer URL to use ipp: instead
of lp: does not change anything. The spool file looks ok to me: i can open it
in adobe reader. Cups log files do not show a single error line, even in debug
mode.
I also cannot convert the spool file manually to PostScript by pdf2ps
(ghostscript), it also hangs forever. Printer is a PostScript capable device.
So by upgrading from MAverick to Natty, the print server gets unusable. I will
roll back to Maverick for production use for now, but that does not mean that i
don't care about that issue.
The PDF i use was originally generated with OpenOffice3.1 and recreating it
with LibreOffice3.2 does not change anything. I could track it down to 5 pages
in the pdf. These pages contain some transparencies, this is just a hint on
where the bug is.
Unfortunately i have no idea how to further debug. Help appreciated.
