[Bug 2065708] Re: Add Picture button in Background does not allow you to select wallpaper

2024-05-30 Thread fossfreedom
I presume that this is the apparmor SRU
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apparmor/+bug/2064672

Can confirm that the apparmor changes for oracular work for BCC. I've
uploaded to unstable a revert fix.

Lets close this SRU request once the apparmor changes have been
evaluated by the SRU team and if content test with them to check noble
works without needing this specific update.

Marco,

  this is a temporary issue for 24.04 only. In 24.10 (hopefully) we
will drop this current version of magpie and X11 support- so there
shouldn't be any dependency links.

Have discussed this with jbicha on matrix - magpie needs to revert the
schema changes here to accommodate - and the release needs to be
coordinated.

2024-04-15 Thread fossfreedom
Public bug reported:

Please sync nemo-compare 6.0.1-1 (universe) from Debian experimental (main).
I have successfully tested this on Ubuntu Budgie (noble) - this cleanly built
via sbuild and installed successfully.

Tested by comparing two similar files. Correctly opened the comparison
in meld which is a dependency.

All changelog entries:

nemo-compare (6.0.1-1) experimental; urgency=medium

  * Initial release. (Closes: #972359)

[Bug 2060854] [NEW] Installer no longer launches on live session start

2024-04-10 Thread fossfreedom
Public bug reported:

Beta 10th April. On the 8th April the ISO launched the installer
correctly.

This no longer happens with the 10th April ISO. The change here is that
the livecd-rootfs hard-coding of the old ubuntu-budgie-installer has
been removed. For some reason the new installer is not immediately
ready on startup.

Not a beta showstopper- but will need more investigating and some
tentative uploads here to fix probably.

[Bug 2046844] Re: AppArmor user namespace creation restrictions cause many applications to crash with SIGTRAP

2024-04-03 Thread fossfreedom
Hi - ok - very long thread so not quite sure how best to resolve.

I note bubblewrap is marked as confirmed but no resolution.

For budgie-control-center - backgrounds - Add Picture I found that the
gnome-desktop library libgnome-desktop-3-20 is calling bwrap and that
this was failing due to permissions.

I worked around this via

```
cat /etc/apparmor.d/bwrap
# This profile allows everything and only exists to give the
# application a name instead of having the label "unconfined"
abi ,
include
profile bwrap /usr/bin/bwrap flags=(unconfined) {
  userns,
  # Site-specific additions and overrides. See local/README for details.
  include if exists
}
```

Can this be added to apparmor please?

[Bug 2059335] Re: FFe: Sync file-roller 44-1 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

2024-04-02 Thread fossfreedom
I have done a quick test with ubuntu budgie and nemo.

For some unknown reason, the right-click compress option no longer
compresses the chosen folder. This worked with the gtk3 version.

Extracting an archive does work and correctly uncompresses the tar.gz

Potentially there is a compatibility issue between nemo-fileroller and
the new fileroller.

  .
  This is a standalone application for desktop environments where
  GNOME Online Accounts capability is not integrated in their equivalent
  settings utility.

  Details:
  Upstream blog post https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=4660

  "GNOME Online Accounts, aka “GOA”, is a project which allows users to
  connect to their data in the cloud. This project was only designed for
  GNOME though so it doesn’t provide any front-end. It only provides
  libraries (namely libgoa and libgoa-backend).

  Other than GNOME, many desktop environments integrated a front-end to
  these libraries in their control center: Cinnamon, Budgie, Unity, etc.

  This project is important because it doesn’t just connect a desktop to
  the cloud, it’s used by many applications and libraries. Among other
  things you might use it to connect the Calendar application, the
  Thunderbird email program or the file browser to your online data.

  With GNOME 46, libgoa/libgoa-backend 3.50 moved to GTK4. It can no
  longer be used by GTK3 applications.

  To solve this problem a new XApp called GNOME Online Account GTK was
  created. As any XApp its goal is to work for everybody, in any desktop
  environment and in any Linux distribution.

  This app makes it possible for Cinnamon/Budgie/Unity users to continue
  to use this functionality. It also provides it to any desktop that
  didn’t have access to it before (for instance: MATE and Xfce editions in
  Linux Mint)."

  This application is key for the GTK3 desktops for Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu

This is because magpie has a dependency on mutter-common.

The schema comes from the mutter ubuntu x11 patch which has been
temporarily disabled

Once it has been readded then things will work correctly

ok - I'm asking for a sync and merge.

[Bug 2058136] [NEW] Sync udisks2 2.10.1-6 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

2024-03-17 Thread fossfreedom
Public bug reported:

Please sync udisks2 2.10.1-6 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:
  * Don't build with -Wl,-Bsymbolic-functions. It breaks module loading, as
it confuses GObject's type loading cache: "cannot register existing type
'UDisksDaemon'". (Patch also applied to Debian packaging git, can be
synced next time). (LP: #2040488)
  * Fix an event loop that can occur when ID_PART_TABLE_TYPE is not set for a
device and that device has partitions. (LP: #2037569)
  * Fix an event loop that can occur when ID_PART_TABLE_TYPE is not set for a
device and that device has partitions. (LP: #2037569)

The existing ubuntu noble-proposed FTBFS

The -Wl, -Bsymbolic-functions is part of debian as per the -6 changelog
entry

I did a grab-merge of udisks then built with both the debian
tests-Fix-targetcli_config.json.patch and the ubuntu
lp-2037569-skip-bd_part_get_disk_spec.patch - using sbuild this successfully
builds in noble-proposed.

Can I suggest ubuntu adds the debian delta as well as the ubuntu delta patch
as part of this sync & merge

Changelog entries since current noble version 2.10.1-1ubuntu3:

udisks2 (2.10.1-6) unstable; urgency=medium

  [ Martin Pitt ]
  * Don't build with -Wl,-Bsymbolic-functions.
It breaks module loading, as it confuses GObject's type loading cache:
"cannot register existing type 'UDisksDaemon'".
Ubuntu enables this linker flag by default, no-op for Debian.
(LP: #2040488)

  [ Michael Biebl ]
  * Drop python3-distutils Depends from debian/tests/control.
No longer needed since 2.10.0. (Closes: #1065991)
  * Build-depend on pkgconf instead of pkg-config

 -- Michael Biebl   Mon, 11 Mar 2024 23:19:45 +0100

udisks2 (2.10.1-5) unstable; urgency=medium

  * tests: Fix targetcli_config.json.
Not all attributes are available anymore in newer kernel versions.

 -- Michael Biebl   Wed, 10 Jan 2024 12:28:58 +0100

udisks2 (2.10.1-4) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Stop moving files from /usr/sbin to /sbin.
With merged-/usr being mandatory, this is no longer necessary.

 -- Michael Biebl   Mon, 27 Nov 2023 05:40:54 +0100

udisks2 (2.10.1-3) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Replace udev Build-Depends with systemd-dev.
The new systemd-dev package ships udev.pc and systemd.pc which provides
the paths for udevdir/systemdsystemunitdir/tmpfilesdir.

 -- Michael Biebl   Mon, 20 Nov 2023 23:51:36 +0100

udisks2 (2.10.1-2) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Move systemd services files and udev rules to /usr.
Add a corresponding versioned Build-Depends on debhelper (>= 13.11.6) to
ensure we have a recent enough dh_installsystemd.

[Bug 2055088] Re: debian/control incorrectly installs gnome-session dependencies in ubuntu-budgie

2024-03-01 Thread fossfreedom
@ahasenack ... lessons learned. Never fill in bug reports late at
night.

Ok - clarified the reasoning in the description

** Description changed:

- d/control is used on the official gtk desktops such as budgie.
+ software-properties-gtk is used on the official gtk desktops such as
+ budgie.

- budgie-desktop for noble now uses budgie-session instead of gnome-
- session.
+ Currently in the debian control file it has a recommendation to install
+ the session manager for that desktop - so gnome-session-bin for GNOME
+ based desktops, mate-session for mate desktop and so on.

- software-properties needs an update to its dependency list
+ budgie-desktop for noble now uses budgie-session as its session manager
+ instead of gnome-session.
+
+ Because of the current recommendation, gnome-session-bin is installed on
+ budgie-desktop. It no longer needs to be installed.
+
+ software-properties needs an update to its alternate recommendations so
+ that budgie-desktop doesnt pull in gnome-session-bin incorrectly.

[Bug 2055534] [NEW] FFe change to ubuntu-desktop-bootstrap installer

2024-03-01 Thread fossfreedom
Public bug reported:

Request

A description of the proposed changes, with sufficient detail to
estimate their potential impact on the distribution

--> Ubuntu Budgie is currently using the snap ubuntu-budgie-installer
for its noble dailies. This cannot be maintained by the team by itself
for the duration of the LTS due to its links to Canonicals desktop-
provision and subiquity projects that are rapidly evolving.

A rationale for the exception, explaining the benefit of the change

--> ubuntu-desktop-bootstrap is the desktop teams request for ubuntu &
flavours to use i.e. to not use ubiquity and instead use either ubuntu-
desktop-bootstrap or an alternative such as calamares

Any additional information which would be helpful in considering the
decision

--> Currently the stable version of ubuntu-desktop-bootstrap does not
work for flavours. We hope by UI freeze these issues are resolved by
the installer developers.

[Bug 1973117] Re: Screen sharing switch does not work in Budgie 22.04

2022-05-15 Thread fossfreedom
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]

- [Impact]
-
- * Remote Desktop Sharing is a capability that Budgie supports through its
GNOME Control Center equivalent called
-Budgie Control Center
- * Through our community forum it has been reported that Remote Desktop
Sharing is not working
- * The issue has been tracked back to Ubuntu itself sync'ing
gnome-remote-desktop & gnome-settings-daemon very late into the cycle
-which broke how VNC sharing was enabled - it is now enabled via systemd -
previously it was enabled via gnome-settings-daemon
-which budgie-control-center used to enable.
- * To support remote desktop sharing we have imported the systemd code from
gnome-control-center into our fork and rewritten
-how the enabling occurs. We have done this to ensure the existing
interface is not changed rather than trying to
-import the wholescale RDP & VNC graphical changes gnome-control-center
made just before the 22.04 release date.

-1. Open budgie-control-center - choose the Sharing side tab
-2. Slide the switch toggle on the headerbar to enable the other sharing

[Bug 1972007] Re: budgie-desktop issues after changing fractional scaling on 4K monitors

2022-05-10 Thread fossfreedom
** Description changed:

- Affected systems: Ubuntu Budgie 22.04 LTS
+ [Impact]
+
+ * Fractional scaling is an inherited option from Ubuntu's
+patching to mutter. Budgie supports fractional scaling
+through its GNOME Control Center equivalent called
+Budgie Control Center
+ * Through our community forum scaling issues have been reported
+when setting fractional scaling. Two key issues:
+1. Budgie graphical elements such as the menu and quicknote
+ popovers are not displayed correctly
+2. When the screensaver lock-screen is invoked the whole
+ desktop violently flashes for several seconds before being
+   left on a lock-screen with a dialog that is partially/
+   not visible
+ * To support fractional scaling properly under budgie requires
+two actions:
+1. Inform the user when using fractional scaling that they
+ need to restart their user session for part 1 above to
+   be resolved
+2. Disable the screensaver lock screen - user needs to be
+ informed that this will occur when using fractional
+   scaling
+ * This bug is resolved in two linked packages
+1. budgie-desktop where the message to restart the session
+   is displayed
+2. budgie-control-center where fractional scaling is set
+   by the user.
+
+ [Test Plan]
+
+ * Without the two package updates these issues occurs as follows:
+1. Open budgie-control-center - choose the Displays side tab
+2. On the right-hand side of the screen click on the fractional
+ switch and choose a fractional scaling from the drop-down e.g.
+   125%
+3. Observe the confirmation message - it just says "Does the display
+   look OK?"
+4. Logout and login
+5. Look at the lock settings in budgie-control-settings - displayed -
click automatic lock switch to turn on automatic locking
+ with a period of time - for example 5 minutes and a delay value
+6. Wait until the display turns off - wait the further specified time
+ after the display turns off.
+7. Move the mouse and watch the screen flash repeatedly until
+ the lock screen dialog appears - partially/not at all. Note - for some
setups the screen with flash repeatedly
+ immediately after the screen first turns off.
+8. Type the password (even if the dialog is not visible) and press return
+ The desktop should be displayed again.
+
+ * Enable the proposed repo and then install the updates - the following
packages
+needs to be installed
+
+sudo apt install budgie-control-center budgie-control-center-data
budgie-desktop budgie-core libraven0 libbudgie-plugin0 libbudgie-private0
libbudgietheme0 gir1.2-budgie-1.0
+
+  * Test fractional scaling:
+1. Open budgie-control-center - choose the Displays side tab
+2. On the right-hand side of the screen click on the fractional
+ switch and choose a fractional scaling from the drop-down e.g.
+   125%
+3. Observe the confirmation message - it should now inform you to restart
the session.
+4. Look at the lock settings - the automatic lock should be turned off and
disabled from editing
+5. logout and login
+6. Wait until the display turns off - note the desktop/lockscreen
wallpaper normally reappears immediately but the desktop will be not be visible
+ It is normal to see the lock screen wallpaper either covering part or
all of the screen
+7. Move the mouse and watch the desktop reappear
+8. turn off the fractional scaling switch. Note that the automatic lock
switch now becomes editable. Turn on automatic lock
+9. Logout and login again
+10. Note: no fractional scaling would be used now - wait for the screen to
turn off and the lock screen period should invoke
+ the lock dialog when the mouse is moved.
+
+  * Regression testing
+The testing to ensure no regressions occur in this area.
+1. Connect more than one display - the desktop should display according
how the displays are arranged on the screen
+2. Choose different values for the lock screen - this should affect when
the screen display first turns off.
+
+
+ [Where problems could occur]
+
+ * The changes are specifically around fractional scaling
+handling.
+Since this is in a budgie specific package (budgie-control-center)
+this will not impact any other desktop.
+ * The changes are in the same code section of budgie-control-center as
display handling
+and lock screen turn on/off
+ * Thus from a regression view point handling of any display issues may be
impacted.
+ * From a mitigation point of view - in the unlikely event of an issue
occuring, Ubuntu Budgie
+also ships with gnome-control-center which can be used to handle displays
and lock screen.
+Note GCC prior to 22.04 has always been used to manage displays and the
lock screen

[Bug 1970255] Re: ubuntu-bug budgie-control-center --> bug when change language

2022-04-26 Thread fossfreedom
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ * Multi language users cannot switch from English US to their own
+ language via Budgie's control center application
+
+ * This is essential capability for users who need to work across
+ multiple languages.
+
+ * The fix here is to lift the exact same patch as in jammy's GNOME
+ Control Center that adapts to Ubuntu's specific language patching in
+ accountservice et al.
+
+ [Test Plan]
+
+ * Start budgie-control-center and navigate to the Region tab
+ * From the language box confirm that the language is your current language
e.g. French. Without the fix the language box will say "English United States"
+ * Try to set to another language and click the restart session button when
prompted. Without the fix, this will fail.
+
+ * Next install from the proposed repo the package budgie-control-center
+ * logout and login and launch budgie-control-center
+ * again examine the language. This time the language box will say what your
current language is
+ * Try to set to another language and click the restart session button when
prompted. Log back in and check that your chosen language is set correctly.
Repeat for any other language you have installed.
+
+ [Where problems could occur]
+
+ * The main issue here is that Ubuntu has a series of specific language and
locale patches that Budgie Control Center does not currently work against.
+ * The patch is taken directly from the current v41 version of GNOME Control
Center on jammy and refreshed to remove the fuzz.
+ * This patch in itself has been carried by Ubuntu since 2019 so its been
well tested.
+ * the risk here is that the patch introduces additional issues in Budgie
Control Center - an app that is specific to Budgie and no other desktop
environment.
+ * The risk is deemed low by the team since Budgie Control Center and GNOME
Control Center are forked from the same code base
+ * Budgie Control Center does not carry all the Ubuntu specific patching. I
have examined the ubuntu patchwork and the only other patch we don't carry is
the addition of the button to launch gnome-language-selector. This isnt needed
by Budgie since the app is available from our menu.
+
+ * The package itself has been tested by the Ubuntu Budgie team via a
+ specific test PPA https://launchpad.net/~ubuntubudgie-
+ dev/+archive/ubuntu/budgie-control-center switching from Dutch to
+ english and back to Dutch
+
+ * From a regression mitigation, Budgie already has gnome-control-center
+ installed - just not visible to users. That can be used via the command
+ line to perform any issues that we deem as a regression until things are
+ resolved.
+
+ [Other Info]
+
+  * N/A
+

[Bug 1968142] [NEW] SSH sharing not possible after enabling SSH

2022-04-07 Thread fossfreedom
Public bug reported:

The budgie raspi application includes a SSH sharing option - the intent
here is to allow SSH connections remotely to the Pi.

This was achieved in 21.10 via openssh-server.

In 22.04 by just installing openssh-server, it no longer automatically
enables the SSH service - this appears to be a deliberate change in
behaviour by the package.

Thus the Pi app should now enable the service after installing the
openssh-server package rather than assuming the package does the
enabling after installing.

The change here is low risk - the Pi app does its configuration via a bash
script only when initiated by the user. No additional dependencies is required.

[Bug 1968081] Re: [FFe] [UIFe] gnome-characters 42

2022-04-06 Thread fossfreedom
From a Ubuntu Budgie point of view, the new libadwaita app looks out of
place in our distro with adwaita's ghastly dark brown colouration. With
a GTK_THEME based override the headerbar looks broken with our default
theme (i.e. we would have used this to suggest this type of workaround
for folk that wants to use a non libadwaita theme).

However - we will not die in a ditch on this. If Ubuntu really wants
this then we would request that "ubuntu-budgie-meta" be added as
affected and we will need to use this UIFe as a way to remove gnome-
characters from our seeds - i.e. we will not ship with the app.

not sure about the blank welcome screen issue - that's probably a
webkitgtk2 issue but will try to reproduce.

For the profile issue - yes indeed this is the correct package to report
against.

Fixed in git master - will test locally and upload asap.

[Bug 1967731] Re: Revert VNC option in budgie raspi app

2022-04-04 Thread fossfreedom
** Description changed:

  In ubuntu budgie 21.10 our raspi app provided two remote desktop

  invoked from an application only visible when running ubuntu budgie on a

  Post Ubuntu 22.04 freeze, sync'd from debian was a new gnome-remote-
  desktop package that dropped the VNC option that our PI app required.

  Due to the beta freeze we stated in the changelog for v0.17.7 of the
  package that we were going to temporarily hide this now broken VNC
  option.

  We would now like to reinstate VNC to resolve the regression. We have
  done this in such a way as to not impact what the user interacts with -
  i.e. doesnt require a UIFE. The previous scripted VNC install and
  configuration option has been reworked to replace gnome-remote-desktop

  This has been tested on the regular desktop ISO (does not show as
  expected), as well as on a ubuntu 22.04 PI image uplifted with ubuntu-
  budgie-desktop (shows the now expected two RDP and VNC options)

+ To clarify - the changes do not require any dependency changes - all
+ changes are invoked (as previously) through the raspi pi specific app.

[Bug 1967265] [NEW] background gdmcheck is displayed constantly in tmux

2022-03-31 Thread fossfreedom
Public bug reported:

New for 22.04 - On logon we have a background check to display a
notification of whether gdm is running with budgie - if it is then a
notification is displayed informing them that screenlocking will be
broken - use lightdm.

This check is unreliable - it only sometimes works - and is an annoyance
to tmux users since tmux runs /etc/profile.d commands constantly.

Really the GDM check should be done within budgie-desktop itself - not
on a logon profile script.

Recommendation is to remove this script. This will return us to the
status-quo as of 21.10 where this check did not exist

[Bug 1967110] Re: libhandy based apps are incorrectly themed with pocillo slim variants

2022-03-30 Thread fossfreedom
** Description changed:

  Libhandy apps in 22.04 are incorrectly dark-themed - they default to
  dark adwaita rather than pocillo when the slim variants are used.

  It is because libhandy assumes dark & light variants have the suffix
  "-dark" and "-light" respectively.

  In Pocillo the convention is Pocillo-dark-slim and Pocillo-light-slim.

  We will have to adjust the theme name convention to "Pocillo-size-
  color".

  Whilst this will 'break' upgraders - this is a small issue since users
  can easily choose the changed name in budgie-desktop-settings.
+
+ NOTE: the diff on this will look scary simply because the name change
+ looks like lots of stuff has been deleted and lots of stuff is new. The
+ change is simply the name of the two folders

Ubuntu Budgie will also need to update our seeds with this new snap, the
firefox snap and our two snap themes. Should we raise a separate FFe or
can we ride on the back of the FFe?

[Bug 1962021] Re: Make the deb package install the firefox snap

2022-02-24 Thread fossfreedom
For Ubuntu Budgie we need the auto theming to work for the transition.

In addition we will need to seed two further snap theme packages in
addition to the firefox theme since our themes are not in the general
theme snap ubuntu uses.

[Bug 1962009] Re: Ubuntu Pro is being promoted via community flavours

2022-02-23 Thread fossfreedom
Seb,

  whether it is advantageous for favours I can't really say - all I can
see on https://ubuntu.com is ubuntu pro for AWS and Azure.

  I fail to see the immediate relevance for community flavours where
desktop/laptop based flavours are asked to support their key packages
typically for 3 years (for an LTS). How does Ubuntu Pro help here with
the wider archive all flavours use?

Obviously not really a discussion point for launchpad - if its covered
on discourse together with the relevance for flavours etc then please do
advise.

We (Ubuntu Budgie) do have software-properties-gtk installed - so maybe
that criteria needs to be tweaked for whether the notification to be
displayed?

[Bug 1960264] Re: 503 errors for Jammy PPAs

2022-02-13 Thread fossfreedom
Julian - correct I was using apt-cacher-ng as per sbuild instructions
here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SimpleSbuild

Sorry - I've no idea how to configure squid-deb-proxy with sbuild. So
I've deleted my sbuild chroots & disabled using the .mk-sbuildrc proxy.
Installing from a ppa no longer shows 503 errors.

[Bug 1955307] Re: ayatana-indicator-application have wrongly located so- and service- files on Jammy Mate/Xubuntu/Budgie

2022-02-03 Thread fossfreedom
We (Ubuntu Budgie) had this issue with the new x86_64-linux-gnu path -
our budgie-indicator-applet needed a no change rebuild to pick up the
new path i.e. the path is set at build time - it isn't dynamic.

So all is currently well in UB. If it is changed back to
/usr/lib/ayatana... then we will need to-do another similar rebuild
exercise.

[Bug 1959629] [NEW] lintian hangs during a debuild or sbuild

2022-01-31 Thread fossfreedom
Public bug reported:

Uplifting to the latest lintian on jammy

a debuild -S -k0xkey on a package, the debuild never finishes - it gets
stuck at the lintian stage.

I have to downgrade lintian to the previous version from impish

Similarly, running a sbuild on any package, lintian never finishes if I
include lintian checks

Now I have to workaround via sbuild -d jammy --no-run-lintian

my ~/.sbuildrc is

# Name to use as override in .changes files for the Maintainer: field
# (mandatory, no default!).
$maintainer_name='x ';

# Default distribution to build.
$distribution = "jammy";
# Build arch-all by default.
$build_arch_all = 1;

# When to purge the build directory afterwards; possible values are "never",
# "successful", and "always". "always" is the default. It can be helpful
# to preserve failing builds for debugging purposes. Switch these comments
# if you want to preserve even successful builds, and then use
# "schroot -e --all-sessions" to clean them up manually.
$purge_build_directory = 'successful';
$purge_session = 'successful';
$purge_build_deps = 'successful';
# $purge_build_directory = 'never';
# $purge_session = 'never';
# $purge_build_deps = 'never';

# Directory for writing build logs to
$log_dir=$ENV{HOME}."/ubuntu/logs";
$run_lintian = 1;
$lintian_opts = ['-i', '-I', '--pedantic'];

# don't remove this, Perl needs it:
1;

All jammy sbuilds have worked before the latest lintian was released.

Thoughts as to what is the issue here?
