[Bug 103603] Re: X server at 100% CPU

I am using superkaramba, but I don't know if the problem is related. How
did you turn off DPMS? I can try shutting down acpid but I don't know if
that will prevent my monitor from going into standby mode.

[Bug 120347] Re: xorg hang after longer (12h) idle time

2007-08-04 Thread freerick
I'm running Kubuntu Feisty and I have an nvidia geforce 6200. I
encounter the exact same problem: after leaving the computer running
over night, I come back and xorg is at 100% (on one of my CPUs) and the
window decorations have disappeared. Since I have a dual CPU system, my
guess is that it is more tolerant towards this, so although X is
completely frozen (only the mouse moves), I can ctrl+alt+F1 to a console
and take down the system cleanly. (however, if I switch back to the X
server before rebooting, the window decorations are gone)

After a reboot everything is fine. I also ran strace on xorg when it
goes berserk, but the only thing that was noteworthy that I came up with
was also the SIGALRT message. Comparing it to an strace of xorg in
normal conditions (when it's not going berserk), however, revealed that
the SIGALRT message also comes up during normal operation, and neither
that nor any other calls that xorg makes while it's berserk indicate
anything out of the ordinary.

Further, I have taken advantage of the dual CPUs to examine all logs in detail
as the problem occurs: nothing out of the ordinary, in fact, since the system
has been sitting idle, hardly any activity is logged. I checked the KDE
settings and they are showing the screen saver to be off. I do have
kpowermanager installed (because I had a problem where my network card would
stop working after a while otherwise), but it's set to Performance and the
screen saver, auto-suspend for the screen, and in fact all other power-saving
options are unchecked. My screens do turn blank, however, after a period of
inactivity, so it's possible that this is related.
On a side note, I have three monitors on two nvidia cards, running on xinerama
with the 9755 nvidia binary drivers. All signs point to this not being a driver
problem, however, unless nvidia and intel use some of the same libraries in
their drivers.

I also wanted to point out that I usually don't lock my screen when I
leave, so that might not be relevant to this particular problem.

In addition, my GLX does not work for some reason. Whenever I try to run a
glx-enabled app, the app crashes, although it is installed, because the glxinfo
command outputs a grid with the glx info.
Rolf, please let me know the status of your GLX (try running a GLX screensaver
and see what happens), as well as any power management software (such as
kpowersave) that you may have running on your system. Also, do you have a
screen save enabled and do your screens go into auto-suspend mode after a
period of inactivity?

This is a really tricky problem and I really have to find a solution
because it's starting to happen even after shorter periods of
inactivity. The intervals are seemingly random, making the problem
virtually impossible to reproduce and difficult to troubleshoot, but
usually the problem happens after long periods of idle time (although it
has occurred after only a few minutes of idle time), and every time it
happens my workflow is interrupted, so it's really starting to bother
me. It's also embarrassing if you're about to show someone (i.e. a
client) something on your computer and it's completely frozen. If we put
our notes together, we will probably be able to resolve the problem a
lot quicker.

[Bug 104481] Re: [feisty beta] Xorg server up to 95% of CPU

2007-08-04 Thread freerick
it shouldn't be this high though. IF the CPU maxes out like that, it
usually indicates a problem of some sort. Try starting firefox from the
command line with the --no-sync option and see what happens. You may
also want to check to see if you have the right binary for your
architecture (i.e. if you're on x86_64, get the corresponding binary).
Better yet, compile firefox yourself leaving out anything you don't
need.

[Bug 98668] Re: when I close laptop lid, xorg takes 100% and never recovers

2007-08-04 Thread freerick
I think this might be the same as bug 120347.
In both cases, X takes up 100% CPU after the screen turns blank. The difference
is that in this scenario here, the screen turns blank because the lid of the
laptop is closed. Both situations are related to the power state of the screen
changing (or about to be changed) and X subsequently going berserk, with the
only way to recover being logging onto a console and killing X manually.

it looks like this is a duplicate of bug 109507 and bug 120347, as well as bug

I have exactly the same problem and I haven't found a solution yet, but I will

this is apparently similar to bug 51991 as well as bug 120347.

Re: [Bug 75295] Re: Feisty freeze, kernel (?) tries to access DVD drive

2007-07-02 Thread freerick
Thanks for confirming this bug. It keeps happening for me too, no
matter what. Changing the boot device doesn't help. hald-addon-storage
is apparently necessary, as it restarts by itself even after you kill
it, which can cause your computer to lock up again, if you insert
another disk into the drive.
It doesn't do it every single time, but it does happen often enough to
drive me insane.

[Bug 75295] Re: Feisty freeze, kernel (?) tries to access DVD drive

2007-06-27 Thread freerick
I have figured out that the problem occurs even with a base system,
since I booted the system from the Kubuntu 7.04 Live CD, and the problem
occurred after the system loaded (but before the GUI loaded). Oddly, I
was able to boot from it about two or three times, but the fourth time
it would no longer boot; even after I reboot the computer, I would still
get the same problem (even though I am not dealing with a persistent
system), which indicates that the problem may be hardware-related.
Specifically, it looks like the driver is not compatible with this
kernel. I might be able to reproduce the problem again, and, from the
syslog determine where exactly the problem arises, however, this might
be difficult, given that I will be booting from the CD, without
persistence, so I will not be able to go back and view the syslog after
reboot, and I will not be able to SSH into the system to view it,
relying only on the console during boot.

[Bug 75295] Re: Feisty freeze, kernel (?) tries to access DVD drive

2007-06-01 Thread freerick
Ok, I think the problem with the system locking up when there is *no* CD in the
drive is different from the bug that occurs when there *is* a CD in the drive.
Could someone who has the problem when the CD is *not* in the drive post the
output of /var/log/messages? Or any other debugging output that might be
helpful in comparing the two problems.

I think it might be possible that the problem that occurs without the CD
is broader as it has been reported on non-i386 machines and non-
ASUS/Samsung drives, but it looks like the problem that occurs with the
CD in the drive only occurs on ASUS/Samsung drives and perhaps only on
Feisty.

As far as installing Windows to flash the firmware of the drive, I commend your
bravery, Ben. I think I'd rather stick it out with hald than install Windows,
because at least that way I know what the problem is. My friend's PC just went
up in flames after he installed Vista.
I'm not surprised.

[Bug 112120] Re: guidance-power-manager crashes at startup

Any updates on this yet? Even after upgrading to all the latest
packages, the problem still persists. I tried disabling most ACPI
functions in the BIOS and I installed KPowersave, and now my ethernet
card no longer shuts down randomly, but a few odd things continue to
happen here and there, such as the hard drive spinning out of control
and locking up the system.

It seems that frequency scaling is completely disabled for my CPU, so I
can't change the settings for that in KPowersave. The patch doesn't work
for me so I was wondering if there is a fixed package available for
amd64 yet?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks for the time regarding the compile-time kernel option. I will
keep that in mind in case the problems like this become more pervasive.

Ok, it look like we can narrow this down to ASUS drives. If anyone is familiar

Meanwhile, I'm experiencing the same problem again, this time only on my ASUS
drive, not the SONY drive, and the problem only occurs intermittently. I'm now
also convinced that it's not related to libdvdcss, even though the problem
disappeared the fist time right after installed that package.
I honestly don't know where to begin to look for the source of the problem, so
any ideas would be great!

I've also had other issues where the IRQ timing starts to get out of
what and the entire system starts to go insane, with the hard drive
spinning out of control; this happens randomly, although lately it
hasn't happened as much, since I disabled most ACPI options in the BIOS.
My error logs indicate that this problem is due to the IRQ timing being
off which is often caused by CPU time scaling. I'm thinking that the
problem here with the DVD drives might be related since the symptoms are
very similar. If you have this problem, perhaps try disabling certain
ACPI / CPU time scaling / other power management settings (espcially on
the laptop!) which might be causing this problem.

Thanks, I hope we find a solution soon. Anyone from the hald team or the
kernel team responding?

2007-05-22 Thread freerick
l7or, thanks for your report, the problem you are describing is
exactly the same as mine: every 5 seconds the messages

May 16 20:05:31 notebook ide: failed opcode was: unknown
May 16 20:05:31 notebook hdc: drive not ready for command

Regardless of which terminal I'm looking at. At the same time,
hald-addon-storage uses 100% CPU, and it takes some time for me to be
able to sudo to kill the process. Afterwards, everything is back to
normal. The hard drive activity light is also on (solid) while, and
sometimes after, hald-addond is at 100%.
I don' t have a Samsung drive; I have an ASUS DVD reader and a SONY
DVD recorder. I don't think they use the same chipset, but if you want
to continue to investigate in that direction, I can check to see which
chipsets they use if it will help you isolate the problem.

2007-05-22 Thread freerick
Ok, I think you're correct that the ASUS drive is actually a Samsung
drive in disguise. As I said before, installing libdvdcss with the
provided shell script (not apt-get), as well as its dependencies
solved the issue immediately, but if anyone solves this problem, on
their own, please post the solution here, that way we can narrow down
what the cause is, even without having one of the hald developers look
at it.

Re: [Bug 75295] Re: Feisty freeze, kernel (?) tries to access DVD drive

2007-05-20 Thread freerick
Ok, I really think that the problem occurs because your system is trying to
read an encrypted DVD but you don't have the required libdvdcss3 package
installed. I had the same problem and after I installed that package,
everything worked fine. Have you tried using a non-encrypted DVD?
Someone who is currently experiencing this problem should try using a
self-burned DVD to test if this is indeed the cause of the problem. Further,
try installing the libdvdcss3 package and post here if the issue is resolved
or if it still persists. If we can isolate it to that problem, a fix should
be forthcoming.

can you post the tail of dmesg after the system starts to hang? Or if that's
not possible, try attaching /var/log/messages. Seeing your specific error
messages can probably help us identify the problem. I always got an error
when I first insert the media, saying that a particular block could not be
read, are you getting that too? Also, is your system locking up even if
there is no disk in the drive? It sounds like you can only work normally if
the drive is open, correct?

This doesn't happen only on encrypted DVD. It happens and in self-burned

2007-05-20 Thread freerick
Mathias, the problem that you're having is not exactly the same as the one I
had, I don't think, but I've had a similar problem: it looks like you're
using an SMP kernel, which, I have noticed sometimes hangs because of IRQ
timing issues. I'm not quite sure what causes this, but the consensus seems
to be that it has something to do with CPU time scaling. Sometimes these
lockups happen after you change your CPU time scaling scheme using a power
manager app (for example from Ondemand to Performance). Try disabling time
scaling and see if the problem persists. Also, if you are running any
application that affects IRQ timing, such as irqbalance, try disabling it. I
had a similar problem and it appears to have gone away after I disabled
irqbalance.

[Bug 75295] Re: Feisty freeze, kernel (?) tries to access DVD drive

2007-05-19 Thread freerick
I have the same problem; resetting the drive doesn't help. The problem occurs
on Feisty with the latest updates on an Intel x86_64. I used multiple drives to
test it, and the problem occurs with each drive, so it seems to be
drive-independent. The problem just occurred, I don't know what caused it. The
only thing that changed is that I updated some packages. I don't where the
activity of the adept update manager is logged, if someone know how to find
that, I can post which packages I updated before noticing the problem.
The output of dmesg and lspci is attached.

[Bug 75295] Re: Feisty freeze, kernel (?) tries to access DVD drive

2007-05-19 Thread freerick
I can confirm that this is happening on x86_64 running Feisty with the
latest updates.

b[SOLUTION]/b However, I noted that the default installation does
not come with the libdvdcss3 package (for legal reasons), which is
required to read encrypted DVDs. After installing it per instructions at
http://www.debuntu.org/how-to-play-d...r-ubuntu-linux. After that,
everything worked fine for all of my drives. :-D

[Bug 112120] Re: guidance-power-manager crashes at startup

2007-05-15 Thread freerick
I'm experiencing the same problem, as well as bug 91545. I tried your patch
above, but it hasn't worked, guidance-power-manager is still crashing, as well
as the display configurator.
Should I mess with the settings in the BIOS regarding ACPI? I tried setting the
CPU scaling to performance, but according to powernowd, CPU scaling is not
supported; I don't know if that's a harware issue or a software issue, since
this is a Pentium D 3.0Ghz with the following kernel:

$ uname -a
Linux freerick-desktop 2.6.20-15-generic #2 SMP Sun Apr 15 06:17:24 UTC 2007
x86_64 GNU/Linux

The output of the lshal command is also attached to this post, so you
can review it. Since I'm using an x64 platform, I can't use the updated
packages that you have released. Do you maybe have a tarball I can
compile? Any help with this would be much appreciated.

In addition, my ethernet adapter dies every once in a while, usually
after a period of inactivity. From what other users have posted, this
appears to be a power management issue; the kernel logs the following:

May 15 06:51:14 freerick-desktop kernel: [ 4409.351884] NETDEV WATCHDOG:
eth0: transmit timed out

[Bug 64012] Re: Bogus chars in available file after upgrade

2007-05-14 Thread freerick
I have the same problem running Feisty 7.10 on a custom-built Intel Pentium D.
I was using apt-get autoremove to clean out uneeded packages when my system
crashed and I had to restart; I've been having problems with my hard drive
(Western Digital Raptor / WDC WD1500ADFD-0 Version: 20.0) and fsck revealed a
lot of bad sectors, so I'm pretty sure that the file did in fact get corrupted
when I had to reset my system during apt-get's operation.
Here is my error message (the 'available' file (889K) is attached as well;
there is binary code at the end and in the middle, so I'm going to restore the
file from backup and see what happens):
