[Bug 1920121] Re: Unable to do anything after pressing the Super key

2021-04-05 Thread funicorn
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1871262 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1871262

I comment here because I can reproduce the issue and want to add more
specifics.

The issue happened since upgrade to 21.04 dev branch with gnome-shell
both on Wayland and Xorg. It appears occasionally, not every time
though, when Super key was pressed or Mouse was moved onto the hot
corner, calling up activity (application) previews. Then suddenly screen
doesn't respond to any keyboard or mouse input, with window previews
staying there. (In fact mouse movement is visible but clicking to close
a window is no longer effective. I can restart the gnome-shell by
inputting alt+F2 & r)

How to reproduce :

1. Press 'Super', or move mouse to top-left corner.
2. Try typing into the dash box while (or even before) window previews show up.
3. There are chances the screen freezes. Applications cannot be switched or
closed, and repressing Super key cannot disappear the previews.

I encountered the same problem in Ubuntu 20.04 and 20.10. This
fundamental dpkg deficit has been there for 8 years! How ridiculous a

I use Ubuntu 20.04 in ubuntu:gnome-session. With the gnome-shell
extension named pixel-saver which integrates APP title-bar into the
gnome-shell dock enabled, plank won't show up when some APP is started
up. I have to switch to another APP to activate it.

@sfc I installed the driver and had it loaded, however the card reader
remains unassigned after reboot. Maybe I should wait for some kernel

[Bug 1697373] Re: [screensaver] Screen blanks during video playback in Chrome under Xwayland

2017-12-10 Thread funicorn
I confirm that also happens in firefox 57 on Ubuntu 17.10.

Firefox: 57.0
Ubuntu: 17.10
Gnome-shell 3.26.2
xwayland:2:1.19.5-0ubuntu2

PS I noticed there is a '-v' option for wayland that runs with "screen-
saver without video blanking". Is that helpful?

2017-11-26 Thread funicorn
It's Nov 2017 and gnome 3.26 now. The bug is reborn. Where did the 'fix'
go? Why can't these bugs be quarantined since the fixes were done? The
same bugs were fixed once and brought back always on the same project,
over and over again. It seems the whole community are trying so hard to
maintain all the packages as well as all the bugs, in the same time.
When we talk about teamwork today, do we keep in mind teamwork begins
from remembering history in a decent way?

2012-11-09 Thread funicorn
The same bug exists on Ubuntu 12.10 with libgtk-3-0 3.6.0-ubuntu3.1.
Thanks god I thought it's only me since I hardly find any similar bug report on
this issue.

[Bug 1075099] [NEW] /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/wireless does not work

2012-11-05 Thread funicorn
Public bug reported:

Based on the details of the script `/usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/wireless',
I believe it is a power mode switcher for the wireless network device
enabled in the system. The script turns off power management of
wireless network card when computer is running in AC mode and turns
power management on when switching to Battery Mode.

However the script does not work on my laptop with Atheros AR928X

driver and well supported in my system.

[Bug 1069847] [NEW] GLib-CRITICAL **: g_variant_new_string: assertion `string != NULL' failed

2012-10-22 Thread funicorn
Public bug reported:

Since upgrade to Quantal, Ubuntu keeps printing the warning 'GLib-
CRITICAL **: g_variant_new_string: assertion `string != NULL' failed' on
every opened gtk application. I don't know where it comes from. Someone
said it may be related to canberra and/or canberra-pixbuf packages. I'm
not sure it's the case.

The warning shows over and over again on each gtk-based window action,
like open a new window, click on menus or buttons and so on. Application
runs with no problem, just the warning is really driving me crazy. I
googled a lot and found little information on this issue. I think maybe

[Bug 1066860] [NEW] suspend and hibernate need confirmation dialogue

2012-10-15 Thread funicorn

Of course I have to report a new bug, because the similar bug report has
been laid aside for long time, as other really meaningful ones does.

It's irresponsible to dismiss the request of adding confirmation

You have add it to the click on logout, poweroff and restart, why not to
do it better ?

[Bug 1064205] [NEW] feature request on ppa-name bash-completion

2012-10-08 Thread funicorn
Public bug reported:

I hope ppa-purge could introduce bash-completion for ppa names. I don't
know others, but for me it's badly inconvenient. For many times have I
input the wrong name, for many times have I googled to confirm the right
name, and for many times have I input a correct name and wait for long
only to find out the ppa has been disabled in the sources.list. Hence it
would be necessary to introduce bash-completion to auto fill the name
form.

Here is a basic bash-completion example for listing the 'meta' names
located in /etc/apt/sources.list.d and triggering completion prompt
based on user input. For example, if user(me) input something like
'xorg', it gives 'xorg-edgers-ppa-quantal'. Hence he(me) can guess the
right name is 'xorg-edgers/ppa'. And by the way the disabled ppa lists
are screened out before this completion.

--
# /usr/share/bash-completion/completions/ppa-purge
# Debian ppa-purge(1) completion -*-
shell-script -*-

_ppa_purge(){
local cur
_init_completion || return

local list=( $( find /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ -name "*.list" -exec
basename {} \; | command sed 's/\.list$//g' 2> /dev/null ) )
local i=0
local wc=${#list[@]}
while [[ $i -lt $wc ]]
do
if ! grep -Ev ^#
"/etc/apt/sources.list.d/${list[$i]}.list" >/dev/null; then
unset list[$i]
fi
let i++
done

COMPREPLY=( $( compgen -W '${list[@]}' -- "$cur" ) )

return 0
} &&
complete -F _ppa_purge ppa-purge
--

Note It cannot work directly since it has to include the arguments used
as 'prefix', which however is quite straightforward to work around. And
the reply message could be sourced from the .list file instead of the
filename and further divided into ppa name and team name , which is
quite straightforward too. It's also an option to designate a separate
argument for ppa-purge to include this completion feature.

[Bug 1060886] [NEW] lightdm does not pass Xserver DPI setting to gnome-session

2012-10-03 Thread funicorn
Public bug reported:

While most desktop users start gnome-session through lightdm login,
lightdm does not pass DISPLAY DPI setting in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to the
started gnome-session. I can see relative keywords in
/var/log/Xorg.0.log indicating DPI setting is adopted by Xserver, and
I see big font size in the unity-greeter interface indicating larger
DPI setting in xorg.conf take effects. However inside the desktop, DPI
is reset to default (96,96) with no reason. Further I use xrandr to set
DPI to a larger value but see no effect. Using xpdyinfo shows DPI is
still (96,96).

So does gnome just abandoned the display dpi feature in the application
level? or is it mandatory to set dpi always to (96,96) by gnome?

No, It affects my Acer laptop too. Gnome-settings-daemon crashes when

[Bug 1058451] [NEW] gnome-power-manager suspends my system when wget is running

2012-09-28 Thread funicorn
Public bug reported:

Gnome-power-manager is supposed to facilitate better power usage. But it
proves it's stupid. It's stupid because it make my system suspended when
I was downloading important files using wget. I see very clearly in the
preference page of gnome-power-manager that it promises the user it
won't suspend the system until there is 'no activity' taking placing for
1 hour in power mode [AC] and for half an hour in power mode
[Battery]. And just like many other system tools in gnome, it's lying
again. It suspends my system even when wget is running in the gnome-
terminal and there is network activities launched by the user himself,
without asking. I call this stupid. I call this irresponsible. I call
this dishonest.

[Bug 1053755] [NEW] can not configure metacity window button anymore

2012-09-20 Thread funicorn
Public bug reported:

just upgraded to unity 6.6.0 on Ubuntu 12.10 amd64. Unity window button cannot
be configured like before.
It's used to be done through gconf-editor or gsettings.

Actually I read through the unity upgrade changelog, and see some key words
about how unity has transited
its conf data from here to there blabla.

But however you change your conf framework, you have to make sure the
real settings are transited, not only the codes!

So could you please teach me how to set the window button from top-left to
top-right, which is obviously accepted
by most users as human-preferred ? and how to hide the 'maximize' and
'minimize' button, if possible ?

I rewritten the above codes in a 'separted' form, one pattern per font,
everything goes fine.

Yeah, users should be OK with this, except that it makes linux people
more and more stupid.

Public bug reported:

 libapt-pkg4.12 0.8.16~exp12ubuntu10.3:i386 proposed by precise-proposed is

[Bug 193325] Re: "unknown media type" during update

2012-07-19 Thread funicorn
Today is 2012.07.20. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04, and I still ran across this
bug.

One who have used Ubuntu for years would say this is the typical linux story:
the same bug appears repeatedly, developers
being confident everytime they found a workaround claimed as a fix, and being
forgetful everytime they faced a bug report met before.

[Bug 743323] Re: vlc memory leak

2011-09-08 Thread funicorn
Same here. VLC suddenly crashes and the whole system freezes leaving the
hard drive madly working. Finally I have cold-reboot the linux kernel.
Ubuntu seems to own a magic power to make every application a hardware
killer.

What if the user is not present and the bad status lasts ? 30 minute of
such full load state could have physically damaged the hard disk, and
Ubuntu would be the notorious hard-drive killer again.

I'm using Ubuntu Oneiric. Click on the unity button, all the four buttons in
the top row, i.e., multimedia, internet, more app and search files, are grey.

[Bug 710171] Re: gnome3-session is not installable as gnome-shell doesn't exist

2011-08-25 Thread funicorn
Nope, the problem is, several months ago the Natty users CAN install
gnome-shell from the gnome3 ppa, and in fact many of them did install
gnome-shell from the gnome3 ppa, whereas now they CAN NOT. The same
gnome3 ppa still exists and one can see all the package lists on their
web page, but apt-get fails to get any packages from the ppa with error
message : E: Package 'gnome-shell' has no installation candidate.

Maybe the funniest thing is, there is no explanation on the gnome3 team
ppa web page at all, who just behave as nothing is wrong.

well , I personally appreciate #52's way of thinking. Linking IM to either LANG

Since either pattern is not satisfying enough, it's better to let go.

well, the bad news is, the touchpad menu in the "gnome-mouse-properties" is
gone.
And I lost the support of syndaemon, which means touchpad restarts to make
trouble
when typing. The same nightmare in Ubuntu 10.10 is back.

[Bug 663776] Re: [dash] Search field in Unity can not support iBus

2011-05-16 Thread funicorn
I can not understand the logic here. Ubuntu has CJK language support,
but CJK users cannot input Cin JK language in unity search box.

And this obvious bug is marked as "wishlist".

[Bug 681348] Re: Add "show me the desktop" keyboard or Unity dock shortcut

No, xdotool is useless. By pressing the button, it goes to the interface
the same as that after pressing [super].

PS, it's a silly mistake to miss the great show-desktop button.

[Bug 754470] Re: syndaemon consumes 100% CPU

2011-04-16 Thread funicorn
Same issue on my laptop. And it's of the kind which does harm to one's
hardware.
It may overheat the laptop if one doesn't notice or know how to stop the crazy
syndaemon. Also, I don't quite understand what this daemon does in my system.
My touchpad is always recognized as a wheel mouse with the scrollbar not
working,
so that It still works even ifI disable the "touchpad" in the mouse
configuration GUI.

[Bug 762728] [NEW] Date & Time indicator cannot show complete date and time

2011-04-16 Thread funicorn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

The designed width of the date & time indicator seems to be too narrow to
display the whole infomation of date & time. If only time is displayed
everything is OK. If I choose to have both date and time displayed, then the
date &time
indicator is gone.

I am using Ubuntu 11.04 Beta2 Unity, Simplified Chinese Edition.

** Affects: unity (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 657634] Re: [GeForce GT 330M] nvidia 260.19.06-0ubuntu1 update triggers black screen on boot for sony vaio F-series

2010-11-08 Thread funicorn
well, the error msg given by Xorg.0.log is something like "cannot initialize
nvidia_drv.so" and "no screen found".
My doubt is this is a problem that the driver couldn't recognized the screen
module or nvidia_drv.so does not work, or both?

I googled a lot on this issue, and I hardly see any useful comment or
inspection from PPA group. Do they just not buy these
bug reports? Because I think it would be helpful to figure out the reason why
the newer version of NVIDIA drivers not work but
the old ones do. In my case version 256.44 works, but 256.53, 260.19.06 and
higher don't.

[Bug 344053] Re: I/O warning : failed to load external entity

2010-11-06 Thread funicorn
Firstly the error msg in .xsession-errors adds difficulty of troubleshooting,
secondly I suspect that the error msg indicates
gnome will first try to recover the saved compiz session, find no saved and
output the error msg, then start a new one.
Obviously this slows down the loading speed of gnome desktop when logging in.

[Bug 637357] Re: Touchpad recognized as ImPS/2 Logitech Wheel Mouse ASUS 1015PED

2010-10-14 Thread funicorn
I have the same problem. And I don't understand why such a serious issue
not respected by the Ubuntu Team.

I ran into this problem in Ubuntu 10.04 and the problem still there in
Ubuntu 10.10. The problem leads to terrible touchpad performance on a
laptop , for example, synclient does not work to avoid improper
behaviors of touchpad during typing, and the alps multi-touch advantage
disappear, etc.

I really hope the Ubuntu Development Team should stop focusing on the
meaningless trifles like changing the color
of wallpapers, inventing fuzzy-headed ways of exhibiting ugly startup images,
and make effort to solve the real problems that bother their customers.

2010-10-13 Thread funicorn
Same here. I noticed high cpu possesion happens when thumbnailing some video
file which is incomplete or broken,
such as the file being downloaded but unfinished by BT software.

[Bug 572033] [NEW] gnome-osd-properties takes no effect

2010-04-29 Thread funicorn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-osd

After upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04, I found the old configuration of gnome-
osd-properties does NOT work any more. The font of gnome-osd
notification is totally not that set in the gnome-osd-properties
interface. And I don't know why this happens. Actually I have changed
the default font (the first line of serif and sans-serif ) in the file
"/etc/fonts/conf.d/69-language-selector-xxx", but gnome-osd seems to use
another font, neither the one set in gnome-osd-properties, nor the one
set as the default font for serf and sans-serf.

When upgrading to 10.04, I was asked to replace the old version of
"/etc/fonts/conf.d/69-language-selector-xxx" with the new one, I chose
to keep the old one in case of losing changes, it this the reason ? If
so, how could I reconfigure to use the default new version of
"/etc/fonts/conf.d/69-language-selector-xxx" ?

[Bug 567085] Re: qbittorrent package is broken on ubuntu lucid

2010-04-21 Thread funicorn
Well I can be sure it's not a problem of qbittorrent itself . But the
solution of downgrading from libtorrent-rasterbar5
[0.15.0+really.0.14.10-0ubuntu1 (now) -> 0.14.10-2~lucid~ppa1 may
indicate there is internal conflict in Lucid between the two packages
libtorrent-rasterbar and qbittorrent.

[Bug 567085] Re: qbittorrent package is broken on ubuntu lucid

2010-04-20 Thread funicorn
Oops, I think I found where the problem is. I rechecked and found I am also
using the ppa repos of deluge. And this ppa provides a newer version of
librasterbar5. After some trial of removing and reinstalling packages I found
the problem. The version libtorrent-rasterbar in my system is
0.15.0+really.0.14.10-0ubuntu1 (now), and the right version needed by
qbittorent is 0.14.10-2~lucid~ppa1. So I run aptitude and
downgrade libtorrent-rasterbar5 [0.15.0+really.0.14.10-0ubuntu1 (now) ->
0.14.10-2~lucid~ppa1.

Now my qbitorrent works fine. I hope above information could help.

[Bug 567085] Re: qbittorrent package is broken on ubuntu lucid

2010-04-20 Thread funicorn
Thanks for such a fast reply. I checked and found only one package with name
including "libtorrent" installed, namely libtorrent-rasterbar5.
Actually I am already using the above ppa repos. And if I am right, I
remembered I was using libtorrent-rasterbar6 on Karmic before upgrading to
Lucid. Is it possible that the update-manager removes the newer version and
install an old one?
