[Bug 2058133] Re: [SRU] update-manager crashes when ua security-status response is an error

2024-03-27 Thread Giacomo Massa
Hi Timo and everybody, just tested the proposed package for Jammy
(22.04.4), version 1:22.04.20 and it fixes the bug for me same as it did
applying the patch directly to UpdateManager.py before.

Preliminary:
- reverted UpdateManager.py to its original nonworking state
> bug is present

-updated the package to proposed version, then

Testing procedure:

mv /snap/bin/canonical-livepatch /snap/bin/canonical-livepatch.bak
>/snap/bin/canonical-livepatch printf '%s\n' '#!/bin/sh' 'exit 1'
chmod +x /snap/bin/canonical-livepatch
update-manager -c -d

Results:
software opens, runs and gives results without crashing.

I don't know if this helps but I've tested the patch
https://code.launchpad.net/~nteodosio/update-manager/+git/update-
manager/+ref/jammy-json-to-api for Jammy by nteodosio and it fixes the
problem.

[Bug 2058285] [NEW] update-manager crashes when started

2024-03-18 Thread Giacomo Massa
Public bug reported:

When started either via launcher or cli update-manager downloads
informations from sources and crashes when the operation is terminated,
just before showing the package list.

This happens since the update from update-manager version 1:22.04.18 to
1:22.04.19, done yesterday.

Updates via apt or apt-get cli commands work regularly.

Description:Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS
Release:22.04

Package: update-manager 1:22.04.19

Expected behaviour: after sources' interrogation, the software should
either tell no updates are available or show pending updates.

Observed behaviour: the software checks for updates then crashes before
showing any results.

I use an Intel Corporation Wireless-AC 9260 as well and just got hit by
the same bug, after updating from 21.10 to 22.04

I solved it by replacing /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-9260-th-b0-jf-b0-46.ucode
with one extracted from https://packages.ubuntu.com/impish-

[Bug 1938988] [NEW] Glitches in Gnome Shell Windows

2021-08-05 Thread Giacomo Bragagnolo
Public bug reported:

I'm facing an issue in Ubuntu 21.04 with Gnome 3.38. Basically, some parts of
the windows glitches. From my experience I think this parts are mostly the
"updating" ones (animated icons or buttons, typing cursors etc).
I noticed also this common behaviors in all them:

1. It happens regardless of shell or applications theme.
2. It only happens if there are no other open windows behind the window in use
(or if they are running in background but minimized).
3. It doesn't happen if there are windows behind.
4. It disappears by moving, maximizing, minimizing or resizing the window in
use.
5. It doesn't happen on all applications (I tested that this happens with all
Gnome Apps, OBS, Telegram, VLC, but not Spotify, Chrome, Olive Video Editor).

I don't really know how to describe what I see, so here's a brief video
I did to show and explain it. Hoping it will help. (Here's also a link
to the same video uploaded on YouTube, not listed so it's not public.
https://youtu.be/CRE4-49wMTo If you want to see it in HD here you can -
sorry for resolution but my PC has 1366x768 monitor so highest
resolution on YT is only 720).

P.S.: I face this issue in both Xorg and Wayland, so honestly I don't
really know if this bugs are related to Gnome Shell or Mutter.

Re: [Bug 1870736] Re: [nvidia] Screen scaling 125% gives 200%

2020-12-13 Thread giacomo benelli
I'd like if possible to ask a question to those who report that the nvidia
kms workaround "works".

In my experience, it makes indeed possible to work with fractional scaling,
but the performance is absolutely abysmal: I have tearing issues, drawing
issues and general extreme low performance, comparable to the Xorg driver.
Despite this being OK while waiting for proper support, I don't think this
can be a definitive solution.

So, is it just me doing something wrong and possibly needing to fix
something else or is this the same experience for everybody?

No polemic intent, just would like to assess what "it works" means in this
context.

Thank you very much

[Bug 1872527] Re: Clipboard doesn't work 100% of the time in Ubuntu 20.04 (in KVM guests)

2020-09-22 Thread Giacomo Tazzari
@paelzer I have an update.

After correctly applying the big fix on the guest too, the bug was still
occurring but much more rarely.
But now, after I tried disabling Klipper (the KDE clipboard history manager) on
both host and guest, the bug seems to have disappeared completely (and
copy still works fine, just without history).

I have yet to test what happens: if I keep Klipper disabled without any spice
agent fix; and if I
keep Klipper disabled but with the small fix.

(i.e. Dell XPS). If that is supposed to mean anything at all, at some
point I'd expect at least a plan, as David Smoot was mentioning.

But again, not complaining... Nvidia is free to not fix this at all.
Chipping in for devs sounds like a good idea, count me in :)

[Bug 1872527] Re: Clipboard doesn't work 100% of the time in Ubuntu 20.04 (in KVM guests)

2020-09-01 Thread Giacomo Tazzari
Out of desperation, I now tried to enable "Ignore selection" (I don't
really use that feature anyway) in my Clipboard settings on KDE on both
Host and Guest, and see if that changes anything (while still using the
big fix for the time being).

I am trying that because I noticed that often, when the bug occurs, the
guest's clipboard contains sequence of bits of pasted text that get
longer and longer, sometimes from the beginning of the text and
sometimes from the end... and that seems to suggest that it's related to
my target text being progressively selected over time.

I'll let you know if this changes anything.

[Bug 1867421] Re: Microsoft Classic IntelliMouse moves way too fast

2020-05-16 Thread Danny Di Giacomo
Thanks, on Lubuntu 18.04.4 LTS, it's /lib/udev/hwdb.d/70-mouse.hwdb.

I found the mouse far too slow after the update. Personally, I like to
be able to quickly move the cursor from the left to right edge of my
1920 x 1080 screen in about an inch of physical movement.

[Bug 1867421] Re: Microsoft Classic IntelliMouse moves way too fast

2020-05-11 Thread Danny Di Giacomo
I'm running Lubuntu 18.04.4 LTS and recently upgraded to a Microsoft
Classic Intellimouse and find the current speed to be fine. Settings at
present are the defaults (in Input Device Preferences, acceleration 2.0
and sensitivity 10). I received notification about this update today and
am concerned I won't be able to change back to the current speed (cap
will be put in place). Please confirm that this will be possible and if
the update/changes will be easy to remove/reset later if not (steps for
this would be useful).

[Bug 1790861] Re: amdgpu.dc dual monitor issues when trying to sleep / power off the monitors

2018-09-05 Thread Giacomo Graziosi
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected cosmic

** Description changed:

I have a problem with my dual monitor setup on an AMD RX 580: when I lock the
screen and Gnome try to power off both monitors the following happens:
  1) the second monitor goes to sleep before the first one, this is normal and
expected because the first monitor has a longer time to sleep
  2) after some seconds the second monitor turn on back again and prevents the
first one to sleep at all
  3) gnome detects inactivity on the lock screen for some time and try to power
off the monitors again
  4) step 1 all over again in an infinite loop

When I login back from the lock screen the windows inside my Gnome
session can sometimes be rearranged from one screen to the other.

After discovering this behavior I tried to power off the monitors
manually with `xset dpms force off` and I can confirm that the same
happens: the monitors wont really power off because the second one turns
back on and prevents the first one to sleep.

My guess was that somehow when the second monitor was turning off it
delivered some kind of "monitors changed, you should reset" message to
the GPU which in order did some kind of "reset everything and power on
  the monitors back again" action.

Searching for a fix to this problem I tried to upgrade my amdgpu mesa
drivers using the oibaf/graphics-drivers ppa and after this I tried to
upgrade my whole distribution too, moving from bionic to cosmic.

  Nothing worked.

In the end I discovered the existence of amdgpu.dc and tried to disable
it with `GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="amdgpu.dc=0"`, this did the trick
but it is still a workaround.

- I'm not sure this is the right place to report this kind of issues but
- as the issue is somehow critical (the first I entered the power on/off
- loop I didn't notice it and my monitor cycled power for two hours) I
- hope this will help other people.

[Bug 1767292] Re: The bluetooth mouse cannot connect after sleep mode.

2018-05-31 Thread Giacomo Trimarchi
Hi,

I think this problem can be extended for all bluetooth devices. I also
paired an android (OS 7.0) phone, after sleep mode you can not reconnect
the phone any more.

This issue is related with ubuntu bionic 18.04 (this problem was not
present in ubuntu 16.04).

2018-02-23 Thread giacomo
Public bug reported:

After updating the kernel inside the virtual machine to the version
4.4.0-112-generic, at the next boot the vm will stucks during the boot at every

The only workaround is to set the default in grub to the previous version.
The virtual machine hardware is a Gen2.
We are experiencing this issue on all our vps with the same kernel (around
300-400 vms).
Last working version 4.4.0-109

I was stung by this using the Mesa driver.
I concur that it should be a dependency of libgl1-mesa-dri instead of
recommended, unless there is some downside to it that I can't see. I'm not a 3d

This can be closed, by the looks of it, 13.04 reached its end of life a

Well we are still a couple of versions behind: the latest packaged version is
2.38 released in 2014, while the latest upstream is 2.40.1, released in
December 2016, and Trusty is at 2.36.

[Bug 1686189] Re: External monitor connecting problem on Intel graphics card

2017-06-30 Thread Giacomo Orlandi
Sorry for the delay, I tried:
linux-image-4.4.0-83-generic doesn't work
linux-image-4.8.0-040800-generic doesn't work
linux-image-4.10.0-041000-generic works
linux-image-4.11.0-041100-generic works

By the way, I didn't mention is that even the kernel versions that work are far
from perfect. When I first login one of the 2 external screens goes black or
starts flickering, but there is a workaround. I have to switch to text mode
(Ctrl+Alt+F1) and back. With the kernel versions that don't work I couldn't
find any workaround, the external screens go black and they don't switch on
anymore.
Also, when I undock it while it's running it often crashes, and if it doesn't
it crashes when I dock it back. Switching to text mode before docking/undocking
seems to make more stable. That's most likely a different bug though.

[Bug 1686189] Re: External monitor connecting problem on Intel graphics card

2017-06-08 Thread Giacomo Orlandi
Version 4.4.0-72-generic seems to be the last version that works for
everyone here, on different systems. I renamed this bug to mention
Intel, but Shay Perlstein above had the same problem on NVidia.

@Kai-Heng could it be the same bug even if on different graphic drivers? Do you
know if there is any code/module that is used for external monitors regardless
of the graphics card?
For example this entry from the changelog sounds like it might be related:
  - drm/dp/mst: fix kernel oops when turning off secondary monitor

I should have mentioned that I have this problem using a Dell docking
station, and I have 2 external monitors connected to it, 1 connected
using the display port, the other one using DVI. It wasn't working when
using 2 display ports even before 4.4.0-72-generic.

[Bug 1686189] Re: External monitor connecting problem on Intel graphics card

2017-06-07 Thread Giacomo Orlandi
The problem is only reproducible with some Kernel versions, how can it not be
related to the Kernel?
I actually have a Sky Lake, not a Haswell like the reporter.
So maybe one of those commits for Baytrail caused a regression on other Intel
Graphics processors?

Another culprit seems to be Dell laptops... I'm on a Dell Latitude
E7470, other people mentioned them too, although it might just be
because it's a common brand.

2016-07-13 Thread Giacomo Fabris
Also affects 16.04
#45 no more solution (at least, to me) - same failure as installing directly
from Ubuntu repo.
Workaround:
1) Download .exe from sourceforge
(http://sourceforge.net/projects/corefonts/files/the%20fonts/final/)

2) Purge & reinstall ttf-mscorefonts-installer (let it fail)
3) dpkg-reconfigure ttf-mscorefonts-installer
4) The command line will prompt for an optional path where the fonts have
already been downloaded - if any. Type in the path where you downloaded the
fonts from sourceforge and there you are!

[Bug 1593659] [NEW] Wi-Fi password being ignored in prompt

2016-06-17 Thread Giacomo Guiduzzi
Public bug reported:

When I try to connect to wireless networks, I usually use the GUI in the
top-right of the screen to select a network. I get a prompt which says
that to connect I require a password. If I put the network password in
the textbox and I press Enter (or click on the button) the prompt closes
but it doesn't connect to the network and the password is ignored. I
usually have to go in the Wi-Fi settings, select a network's settings
and put the password in the textbox in the Security Tab. When I apply
and select the network it connects and all is fine from that moment on.

I'm on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, Release 16.04 (lsb_release -rd).

[Bug 1578535] Re: Resuming the OS after suspending it deletes all text and icons

2016-05-05 Thread Giacomo Guiduzzi
@jsalisbury The issue started when I installed Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 LTS on
my laptop, I had the 14.04 LTS version (updated to the latest available
packages) before and I didn't have this problem. I have no idea about
the kernel version I had before. I tried testing the latest upstream
kernel but there's another bug in the Software app, which probably you
already know about, and because of this I cannot install any package
which may contain third-party software. I won't add a tag since I wasn't
able to test the kernel.

On a side note, on my system (Xubuntu 15.04, Radeon HD 5670), this bug
did not cause any bricking: X went up even without fglrx drivers.

[Bug 1448512] Re: REGRESSION: No system tray icon in KDE Plasma 5

2015-07-09 Thread Giacomo
Skype appears just fine in my system tray on my Kubuntu 15.04 (and it
has always worked fine since I updated to 15.10).

Unless I am mistaken, I believe Skype got mentioned a lot in those past
discussions because its system tray used not to be compatible with
Plasma 5, but it got updated before the release of Kubuntu 15.04.

Pidgin, though, is another widely used Instant Messenger that is
affected by this system tray issue.

[Bug 1242376] Re: reload php5-fpm crashes

2014-02-28 Thread Giacomo Orlandi
Hi,

We are using Precise LTS too here.
The init script from the php-fpm package in Ondřej's php5-oldstable PPA (PHP
5.4) works on Precise.
That's using start-stop-daemon instead of upstart.

So a fix for Precise, and possibly other older distributions, is to use that
init script also on PHP 5.5.
This is the command that is run there:
start-stop-daemon --stop --signal USR2 --quiet --pidfile /var/run/php5-fpm.pid
--name php5-fpm

Peter Wang: I can't see any difference between using service or the init.d
script here.
I experience the same behaviour I use one, or the other or a mix of the 2.

[Bug 1197491] Re: [DELL Inspiron 15z 5523] touchpad not recognised

2013-09-30 Thread Giacomo Rosati
Precise is the first release that I have installed in this laptop. So I
don't know if this problem was present in previous versions.

[Bug 1197491] Re: [DELL Inspiron 15z 5523] touchpad not recognised

2013-09-25 Thread Giacomo Rosati
After two days of testing Saucy with 3.11.0-8 kernel the behaviour is
the following:

Sometimes the touchpad works properly by default after a fresh boot. In
this case it works coninuatively for hours (possibly it works
permanently).

Sometimes the touchpad does not work by default after a fresh boot (is
completely inactive). In this case the touchpad is disabled, and it
doesn't even activate with the relative Fn key.

In this second case I try to reboot until, after about three reboots, it
works by default.

[Bug 1197491] Re: [DELL Inspiron 15z 5523] touchpad not recognised

2013-09-24 Thread Giacomo Rosati
After a fresh install of Saucy (Daily Build version) the touchpad is
working by default, without need of enabling it via the Fn key.

I'm actually using 3.11.0-8-generic, and have been testing it for some
hours and seems fine. The touchpad works with al functions enabled (also
two-finger scroll).

It only happened once that deactivating the touchpad using the Fn key, I
was not able to reenable it again. It worked again by default after
reboot.

I will let you know if the fix is stable in the next days.

Thanks
