[Bug 903236] Re: Touchpad incorrectly detected as PS/2 mouse on Dell Inspiron 15R N5110

2012-08-17 Thread ionospheric
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 606238 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/606238

echo "options psmouse proto=imps"|sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/psmouse.conf;
sudo modprobe -r psmouse; sudo modprobe psmouse doesn't work for either. (Dell
Inspiron N5110)
And the link
http://people.canonical.com/~sforshee/alps-touchpad/psmouse-alps-0.10/ is
broken. Oh well.

Still not solved on my Dell N5110. Touchpad is recognized as PS/2

[Bug 965953] Re: Indicator menus are too short and scroll when opened from screen bottom

2012-07-09 Thread ionospheric
The patch fixed the problem with the menus being too small for me. I
also have the brief flicker with the menu popping up maximized at first,
but I can live with that. Thanks for the fix. I am sure as upgrade will
fix the flicker, too eventually.

[Bug 523372] Re: CUPS update breaks HPLIP

2010-02-23 Thread ionospheric
dpkg -l | grep glade

results in

ii  libglade2-0   1:2.6.4-1
 library to load .glade files at runtime
ii  libglade2.0-cil   2.12.9-1
 CLI binding for the Glade libraries 2.6
ii  python-glade2 2.16.0-0ubuntu1
 GTK+ bindings: Glade support

However, in the meantime I investigated the

Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0".

message and found this link

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=136182

in which it says

"RANDR isn't available when you are using Xinerama."

So I went to my proprietary NVIDIA driver

sudo nvidia-settings

and disabled Xinerama (I have two monitors).

After that, xsane did not crash anymore
(I can scan again-yeah!)

So the main problem seems to be with RANDR.

The DBUS message and the GtkSpinButton warnings still show up, but no
crash.

Technically, as responsible Ubuntu citizens, we should report this in
the appropriate section-where would that be?

[Bug 523372] Re: CUPS update breaks HPLIP

2010-02-19 Thread ionospheric
Here are the reproducible steps that lead to the crash of xsane:

- boot and login
- start HPLIP GUI
- click on scan: xsane starts
- click on scan: all-in-one starts scanning, but then xsane disappears.

When I click on scan again, a window briefly pops up, but quickly
disappears, xsane is not running.

When I run xsane in a terminal. I get:

The program 'xsane' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
  (Details: serial 3065 error_code 8 request_code 151 minor_code 5)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
   that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
   To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
   option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
   backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

One more note: I had to create an xorg.conf so that my nvidia-settings
parameters would be honored by the system.

[Bug 523372] [NEW] CUPS update breaks HPLIP

2010-02-17 Thread ionospheric
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hplip

I ran the update this morning:

Commit Log for Wed Feb 17 10:13:08 2010

Upgraded the following packages:
cups (1.4.1-5ubuntu2.1) to 1.4.1-5ubuntu2.2
cups-bsd (1.4.1-5ubuntu2.1) to 1.4.1-5ubuntu2.2
cups-client (1.4.1-5ubuntu2.1) to 1.4.1-5ubuntu2.2
cups-common (1.4.1-5ubuntu2.1) to 1.4.1-5ubuntu2.2
flashplugin-installer (10.0.42.34ubuntu0.9.10.1) to 10.0.45.2ubuntu0.9.10.1
flashplugin-nonfree (10.0.42.34ubuntu0.9.10.1) to 10.0.45.2ubuntu0.9.10.1
foomatic-filters (4.0.3-0ubuntu2) to 4.0.3-0ubuntu2.1
libcups2 (1.4.1-5ubuntu2.1) to 1.4.1-5ubuntu2.2
libcupscgi1 (1.4.1-5ubuntu2.1) to 1.4.1-5ubuntu2.2
libcupsdriver1 (1.4.1-5ubuntu2.1) to 1.4.1-5ubuntu2.2
libcupsimage2 (1.4.1-5ubuntu2.1) to 1.4.1-5ubuntu2.2
libcupsmime1 (1.4.1-5ubuntu2.1) to 1.4.1-5ubuntu2.2
libcupsppdc1 (1.4.1-5ubuntu2.1) to 1.4.1-5ubuntu2.2

After that, HPLIP does no longer offer scan and other options, no
supplies info, only printing works. (Worked this morning before the
update).

HPLIP works on the same computer on a non-updated Ubuntu 9.10 (which I
have on another partition)

** Affects: hplip (Ubuntu)

[Bug 478509] Re: Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 on Ubuntu 9.10 cannot access profile on CIFS share

2009-11-14 Thread ionospheric
I am confirming that this little change makes it work: add the option
noserverino.

Here's my new line in the fstab:

//192.168.0.4/data /mnt/NAS/data/ cifs
uid=1000,umask=000,noperm,noserverino,noauto,nogroup,rw,credentials=/root/credentials/NAS/data,iocharset=utf8
0 0

With this, I can use Ubuntu 9.10 and Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 (default with
Ubuntu 9.10), I don't have to boot into 9.04 just to run Thunderbird any
longer-thanks for your help!

The added bonus of 9.10 is that I don't have to run those scripts any
longer as described in

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MountWindowsSharesPermanently#System%20Hangs%20on%20Shutdown

[Bug 478509] Re: Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 on Ubuntu 9.10 cannot access profile on CIFS share

2009-11-09 Thread ionospheric
Appending:

Actually, Thunderbird 3.0 does not really work-it just gets a bit
further.

I can create a profile on the local hard disk and everything works. But
when I copy it to the NAS and redirect the profile, Thunderbird 3.0
starts, but claims not to have the password when I retrieve emails.
Probably an access-rights related issue. I use a ReadyNAS NV+ with the
latest firmware RAIDiator 4.1.6 [1.00a043], and here is my fstab entry
for the share:

//192.168.0.4/data /mnt/NAS/data/  cifs
uid=1000,umask=000,noperm,noauto,nogroup,rw,credentials=/root/credentials/NAS/data,iocharset=utf8
0 0

I have used this technique successfully in the past, so I know it works.
This is probably an issue with the new Samba, the NAS (which runs
Linux), and Thunderbird.

Guys, if I can't get this to work soon, I may give Evolution a try. The
only reason I used Thunderbird was that I dual-booted and wanted to
access my profile from Windows and Ubuntu (which worked), but now that I
don't use or need Windows anymore, that reason is pretty much obsolete.

[Bug 478509] [NEW] Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 on Ubuntu 9.10 cannot access profile on CIFS share

2009-11-08 Thread ionospheric
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thunderbird

The title pretty much says it all.
When the profile.ini file says
..
IsRelative=1
Path=lbw9bxu7.default
it works on the local hard disk.

When the profile.ini file says
..
IsRelative=0
Path=/mnt/NAS/data/Thunderbird/Profiles/mymail
I get the dreaded message:
"Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding"
(which really means that the profile cannot be found)

The network profile works with Ubuntu 9.04 and Thunderbird.
Interestingly, the profile also works with Ubuntu 9.10 and the developer
version of Thunderbird, version 3.0.

My smbfs version is 2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5.

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2007-10-15 Thread ionospheric
The bug will be fixed once most people come to the conclusion that it is
better for them to run Ubuntu rather than Windows, and have the ability
to do so. LiveCDs, OpenOffice, and Mozilla have been very helpful in
that regard. Microsoft has also helped out nicely by introducing the
"activation" feature and by secretly installing updates on people's
computers, even when automatic updating was turned off.

Today, I spent an hour trying to print a Web page under Windows to a PDF
and gave up because it was crashing. Within the same amount of time, I
installed Gutsy RC and all updates on a different computer and printed
to PDF with the included CUPS-PDF driver, without any problems.

That's what I mean by "better"..

[Bug 152515] Gutsy RC blank screen during boot on Dell D610

2007-10-13 Thread ionospheric
Public bug reported:

I installed Gutsy RC on my Dell Latitude D610. It works, however during
the boot process, the screen goes blank, no splash screen. I removed the
splash option in Grub, now I can see the text messages during boot. Once
booting is over, I get the login screen, and after logging in, I get the
desktop which works fine. Even Compiz works with cube effects.I
installed the proprietary ATI driver, my laptop has the Mobility Radeon
X300 controller. When I booted the live-CD, I did see the splash screen.

[Bug 152399] Re: Gutsy RC Install Error

2007-10-13 Thread ionospheric
I had the exact same problem on my Dell Latitude D610. I think it worked
when I let it import an account even though I didn't want to, but I can
always delete that account later.
