[Bug 807646] Re: failed to Upgrading Ubuntu 11.10 from Ubuntu 11.04

2011-08-19 Thread jcwinnie
Unsure if same bug. Lubuntu 11.10 was working. After a partial upgrade
(unable to do full upgrade), have a black screen and not login. This
happened before after upgrading 11.10. It means starting over with
another test version of 11.10 after this latest upgrade failure gets
corrected.

[Bug 803998] Re: unity freezes when changing workspace/desktop

2011-08-11 Thread jcwinnie
Chrome update occurred. I was hopeful that solved the problem. Nope.
Chrome still works fine on Lubuntu; freezes on Ubuntu. Screen darkens and the
only thing is to close it, getting the message:

The window New Tab - Google Chrome is not responding.

Forcing this application to quit will cause you to lose any unsaved
changes.

[Bug 803998] Re: unity freezes when changing workspace/desktop

2011-08-08 Thread jcwinnie
Glad to have a programming competent person report this bug. They way I
got here was to check the version of pm-utils on Ubuntu 11.04 and
Lubuntu 11.04. Same version.

Lubuntu does not use Unity although it installs some unity files.

My problem with freezing is the window darkens and I cannot use Chrome,
cannot switch to other tabs, cannot do anything in an open Chrome tab,
did I say this happens when using my default browser. Since this
happens with Ubuntu 11.04, and not with Lubuntu 11.04 or Lubuntu 11.10,
I deducted that it is a Unity bug, although this could be a false
assumption.

[Bug 762203] Re: Computer is not turned off at shutdown

2011-05-31 Thread jcwinnie
This initial bug report (kudos to the bug reporter for bothering) is
about an upgrade. I can report the problem is the same with a new Natty
install. I have removed quiet splash and run 'update-grub'. Still have
the problem.

Used the solution for past versions. Added 'acpi=force' , updated grub
and that works. Would prefer a better solution.

Love that 90 days after validating the importance is undecided and it
remains unassigned. And, yet when this problem appears many times in
forum the standard response is: Have you filed a bug report?

[Bug 649416] Re: GRUB_TIMEOUT_HIDDEN

2010-09-30 Thread jcwinnie
And, a curious thing, this seems to occur with a new install and NOT
from an excisting one.

The Ubuntu 10.04.01 system from which I type this comment, shows the
startup message, “GRUB loading. please wait… Press Esc to enter the
menu…” even after upgrade to most recent image.

So, I have noticed the problem only after an upgrade to Maverick, or a
complete re-install back to Lucid when Maverick failed, and again when I
went thru the upgrade - revert cycle.

[Bug 649416] [NEW] GRUB_TIMEOUT_HIDDEN

2010-09-27 Thread jcwinnie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub

I am using 10.04.1 LTS (stable) although this most likely applies to
Maverick as well since it is lacking the same initial screen.

grub:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 0.97-29ubuntu60
  Version table:
 0.97-29ubuntu60 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages

grub2:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 1.98-1ubuntu7
  Version table:
 1.98-1ubuntu7 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid-updates/universe Packages
 1.98-1ubuntu5 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/universe Packages

I liked the initial screen that said “GRUB loading. please wait… Press
Esc to enter the menu…”

That has been changed with the latest Grub which is not Grub2 but is. If
you are thoroughly confused, think of this poor dumb user.

By reading Lucid release notes (everybody always reads all the release
notes, right?) I discovered that I must hold down the Shfit key.

Since I liked the visual cue as to when I could press a key to go to the
menu, I tried to make it reappear by 'sudo gedit /etc/default/grub';
changing GRUB_TIMEOUT_HIDDEN=true to GRUB_TIMEOUT_HIDDEN=false; then
'sudo update-grub.'

The update occurred but nothing changed. I expected to have a visual cue
that I could invoke the menu if I chose, yet still lack one.

[Bug 559163] Re: Dell Latitude D600 hangs on wakeup from suspend

2010-09-21 Thread jcwinnie
Sure, from the command line, run

  sudo gedit /etc/default/grub

Look for the line:

  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash

change it to

  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash nomodeset

save the file, then run

  sudo update-grub

That's what I did and it worked.

[Bug 559163] Re: Dell Latitude D600 hangs on wakeup from suspend

2010-09-21 Thread jcwinnie
Well, in the land of the weird, home of the strange, solving this
problem would seem to invoke others, e.g., no sound AGAIN and an
inability to shutdown, either from the desktop or with 'sudo shutdown
now'. So I erase the nomodeset and ran update-grub again. After forcibly
shutting off the laptop and re-starting, there was sound and I was able
to shutdown normally.

Basically followed mox69 directions to correct problem. From the command
line, first issued the command 'sudo apt-get install dpkg --reinstall

Afterward, wine was a problem, so used Synaptic to remove wine and

Now there is other upgrading required, and at least a relatively stable

O.K. spent some time translating last cryptic instruction. Unsure if I

I selected Shutdown icon, then Hibernate (Suspend). The laptop seemed to
think about that comand for quite a while and finally shutdown.

Pressing the latch key failed to start it again, which was normal for
Karmic.

Pressing the power key did start the laptop again. Same blank screen.

I never did switch to VT1 (runlevel 1). When I pressed the Ctrl key as
the first key in the sequence to switch, the password window appeared.
Entering the password brought me back to a working system.

[Bug 534684] Re: Suspend Fails to Resume

2010-03-09 Thread jcwinnie
When I select the Indicator Applet, then Suspend, the screen goes black
and power button stays on.

When I type pm-suspend in text mode, the screen goes black and the power
button goes off. If I press the latch key, the power comes on, yet the
screen remains black.

In either case, I a unable to re-use the laptop without a re-boot. Which
means there are no messages to copy paste.

I also have to right-click the Networking icon and check Enable
Networking to restore access to the Internet.

[Bug 430071] Re: no network since last update

2009-09-15 Thread jcwinnie
Otero's fix failed to work for me. I noted during the most recent update
that init scripts was held back, so maybe I lack a proper update, which
I will lack until can restore network connection.

Interestingly, the update seemed to leave the wireless info and only
wiped out eth0

Did some more reading about Bug#430224, then, as root, tried:

  service network-manager start

which worked, although it chastised me by stating that I could have
typed

  start network-manager

Fine until recent upgrade of karmic.

Not a lot, after running GST_DEBUG_NO_COLOR=1 GST_DEBUG=5 totem I get

ALSA lib problems seem to be occur a lot

The Totem video player appears, yet would seem to be in some endless loop. I
must Force Quit to stop it.

I hope this helps.

I used aptitude. A number of updates were run, including a new version of
dpkg. No longer had a problem with update-manger. Ran update-manager, it
rand updates successfully.

Ran it again today. It crashed. Actually, gnome-panel crashed.

Restarted Ubuntu. Ran aptitude, it updated successfully.

Will leave well enough alone for now.

Actually, prefer apt-get / synaptic or aptitude. They seem to crash less and
avoid misinformation.
Every time I start Update-Manager, it says my system is update, but when I
run Check, it
shows that it isn't.
