Can anyone confirm that this is also a bug in gstreamer? If we could
figure out this bugs relation to gstreamer it could help solve the
issue.

[Bug 216441] Re: Window bars missing; unable to move also

2008-04-12 Thread jlparise
Hello,

Thanks for reporting this bug to help make Ubuntu better.

I think a few things would help resolve/diagnose this issue.

1) What version of Ubuntu are you running?

2) Try turnign on Window Decoration. Go into System --> Preferences
--> Appearance. Next to custom settings click the preferences button.
Under the Effects grouping, make sure Window Decoration is checked.

If you have it turned off you won't get any title bars or windows
borders. From looking at your screen shot this looks like it could be
the problem.

Let me know if that helps so we can continue from there.

Thanks.

[Bug 213696] Re: Ubuntu Can't Mount Cds Burned on Vista

2008-04-07 Thread jlparise
I figured it's an issue with Microsoft, the reason I reported it is
that people are going to continue to try to distribute Vista Cds. It is
going to be the dominant platform regardless of how terrible it is
sadly. So it would be wise for Ubuntu to be able to read the discs.

I know it is not Ubuntu's fault, but the average person doesn't know
that. They will blame it on Ubuntu when it doesn't work.

Also, my friend does not have another burning program, nor does she want
to purchase one.

[Bug 213696] [NEW] Ubuntu Can't Mount Cds Burned on Vista

2008-04-07 Thread jlparise
Public bug reported:

System: Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon

Updated to all the latest updates.

Problem: Every time a friend gives me a data CD burned on Windows
Vista, Ubuntu can't mount it. From Gnome I simply get a pop up stating
it cannot be mounted. See attached screenshot. From the command line I
get the following:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/media$ mount cdrom0
mount: block device /dev/scd0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/scd0,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
   dmesg | tail or so

dmesg output is attached.

The last 2 lines seem to pertain to the problem they read:

[ 597.412000] UDF-fs: No fileset found
[ 597.544000] Unable to identify CD-ROM format.

I have no idea what so is, it doesn't seem to be a valid command.

This has happened to me with 3 CDs, each one was burned was burned using
Windows Vista's built in burning feature. I can verify that the CD's
contain data since I was able to read them with a Windows XP machine and
get the files.

I'm not sure what other information would be helpful so please let me
know.

thanks,

Jon

[Bug 203705] Re: iwl3945 fails to connect to MR814 access point

2008-03-26 Thread jlparise
I was thinking about this bug today and I remembered a problem I had
with Gutsy at first. Basically, my laptop a Dell E1505 has a kill
switch for the wireless and bluetooth. It can be setup in the BIOS.

Anyways, when I first installed Gutsy I could not get my wireless light
to come on. After much tinkering I went into the BIOS and disabled the
kill switch so my Wireless was always on. Then Gutsy wireless worked
and I could connect to the web.

Interestingly I later turned the kill switch back on and now everything
magically works. This was all using the 3945 driver when upgrading from
Feisty to Gutsy.

I don't have a hardy system to test this on as I only have this one
laptop and I can't afford to have any crashes at the moment.

Perhaps you could try something similar to get your wireless light to
come on?

[Bug 204193] Re: sun-java 6 x64 crashes

2008-03-21 Thread jlparise
If java ins't in your path this may be the problem. Netbeans needs Java
to run, try adding java to your path.

Also, I made a mistake above the command should have been: java -version

Once you have the path set confirm that Sun Java is your default version
to do this run: sudo update-alternatives --config java

Here is result on my machine:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo update-alternatives --config java

There are 4 alternatives which provide `java'.

  SelectionAlternative
---
* 1/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java
  2/usr/bin/gij-4.1
  3/usr/bin/gij-4.2
 +4/usr/lib/jvm/java-gcj/jre/bin/java

Press enter to keep the default[*], or type selection number: 1
Using `/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java' to provide `java'.

The one that is called java-6-sun is the official sun version. Once
you've tried that I am stumpedat that point I'll be confirming this

Confirmed on gutsy.

Steps to cause the bug:

1) Open tomboy
2) In the notes section, not the heading type Ubuntu.
3) Ubuntu will be highlighted red.

Here is the ourput of dpkg -l tomboy:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dpkg -l tomboy

Changed status to confirmed, probably a low priority bug.

To be fair you can just add it to the dictionary.

1) right click the work Ubuntu.
2) Highlight spelling suggestions
3) choose add Ubuntu to dictionary

[Bug 203705] Re: iwl3945 fails to connect to MR814 access point

2008-03-18 Thread jlparise
Thanks for posting the problem and a possible soultion.

To help with debugging you could do the following:

A good testcase is a step by step instruction to reproduce your bug
starting with driver unloaded and NetworkManager stopped.

Kill NetworkManager

  sudo killall NetworkManager

To unload your driver modprobe -r DRIVER .

Then load the driver and start NetworkManager:

  sudo NetworkManager

Capture Log

In order to understand whats going on and track down issues, its good to
have a full log. To do so, capture the complete test case and submit the
whole file (don't cut out what you think is important). Please add
markers in the log file so the bug triager can easily see what actions
the user takes at what point of time (this isn't essential, but helps a
lot).

To capture the syslog, do:

 tail -n0 -f /var/log/syslog > /tmp/syslog

and to stop capturing do Ctrl-C (you will have to type your other
commands in an other window or tab)

Adding markers is just like adding new lines with an editor that show
the triager what happened at what point of time.

Example marker:

Sep 6 08:12:30 ...

[ clicked on wireless network 'ubuntu']
Sep 6 08:12:31 ...
...

Debugging Crashes

To install debug symbols, add the following line to your
/etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://ddebs.ubuntu.com/~ubuntu-archive/ddebs/ gutsy main universe

Then install the appropriate dbgsym packages:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install network-manager-dbgsym libnm-util0-dbgsym
libnm-glib0-dbgsym libglib2.0-0-dbgsym

Then restart NetworkManager:

sudo /etc/dbus-1/event.d/25NetworkManager restart

Attach the debugger to the pid of NetworkManager

sudo gdb /usr/bin/NetworkManager $(pidof NetworkManager)
...
(gdb) continue

Once it crashes get a backtrace

(gdb) bt
...
(gdb) bt full
...
(gdb) thread apply all bt full
...

and attach the backtrace above together with your /var/log/syslog to the bug.
Driver Logs

When a bug appears to be driver related or you are asked by a bug
triager to submit a driver enabled log, you need to enable driver
logging right before you start to capture your testcase. How to do that
depends on the driver you use and whether it has been with compiled with
debug support.

2008-03-18 Thread jlparise
Thanks for reporting this bug to help make firefox and Ubuntu better!

Here are a few things to try to help diagnose this issue.

1) Are you using any plugins or extensions? If so try creating a new
profile and see if the bug persists.

To do this start firefox with: firefox -ProfileManager
Be careful not to delete your profile. It can erase the whole directory that
the profile is saved in!
Make a new profile, see if the bug remains.

2) Start Firefox fromteh terminal

Enter: firefox in a terminal
Please upload the output of running this command. Also provide any output at
the time of the crash, if you can see it.

3) Install debugging packages run:

# sudo apt-get install firefox-dbg \
 libgtk2.0-0-dbg \
 libnss3-0d-dbg \
 libnspr4-0d-dbg \
 libpango1.0-0-dbg \
 libc6-dbg

4) After closing all instances of Firefox, start Firefox from the terminal with
the following command:

firefox -g 2>&1 | tee ~/Desktop/gdb-firefox.log
... # some output
(gdb) run
... # run and reproduce crash
(gdb) bt full
... # full backtrace output
(gdb) thread apply all backtrace full
... # all threads full backtrace output
(gdb) quit

Now ~/Desktop/gdb-firefox.log will contain infos we need to initially
process your crash bug. So, please attach that file to your bug report.

5) Copy and paste in a xterm the following command:

TMPDIR=$(mktemp -d)
apport-unpack /var/crash/_usr_lib_firefox_firefox-bin.1000.crash $TMPDIR
gdb -nx /usr/lib/firefox/firefox-bin -core $TMPDIR/CoreDump -ex 'backtrace
full' -ex 'thread apply all backtrace full' -ex 'quit' 2>&1 | tee gdb.log
rm -fr $TMPDIR

That command will run gdb against the coredump file included in the
crash report that was generated when firefox crashed.

Upload the resulting gdb.log to launchpad.

One good thing to do is looking at the gdb output and search for missing
dbg libraries or other warnings, install them and run again gdb.

With this additional information, the devs should be able to help with
this bug.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. In order to help fix the bug please include upload the
following files. Without them we will be unable to fix this issue.

Please include the information as separate attachments:
 * Output of uname -a
 * Output of sudo lspci -vvnn
 * Output of sudo dmidecode
 * Try to suspend/hibernate and then restart the system and attach
/var/log/kern.log.0
 * Tarball of /proc/acpi directory. You can't just tar all files because their
content sometimes changes etc.
* cp -r /proc/acpi /tmp
* tar -cvjf ~/acpi.tar.bz /tmp/acpi

I noticed a reference to mybuntu in apt.log. Perhaps you could try:
sudo apt-get reinstall mythbuntu-desktop

hope that helps.
