[Bug 775702] Re: Some menu icons missing in Inkscape since upgrade to 11.04

2013-01-27 Thread kamereon
This is the only major annoyance in 12.10 (64-Bit, fresh install)
Having to edit all those desktop files manually an start applications by right
clicking and selecting 'no global menu'.
Also I would rather like to use the global menu. But GIMP and Inkscape are
unusable without icons.
Is there really no way to get icons AND global menu?

[Bug 672621] Re: USB mouse takes minutes to work after reboot

2010-11-27 Thread kamereon
It helps to just completely unplug the computer for a minute or so. After that,
it will work normally for the next twentysomething boot processes...
I'm guessing it has something to do with suspend to RAM, but I cannot really
reproduce this on purpose. It just happens ervery now and then.
will look into bios update soonish, never done it before.

Thanks for the help

[Bug 453072] Re: Context menu for an USB pendrive shows "Unmount", "Eject" and "Safely Remove Drive"

2010-03-04 Thread kamereon
This isn't as off-topic as it sounds:
How do I delete files off an external drive?

Let's say the drive is full. So I delete some files to make room. these
files disappear in Nautilus, but are not really gone, because I do not
get any more free space on that drive. If I use 'safely remove' or
'eject', I cannot use the drive afterwards, because I have no free space
on it. The files I deleted still use up the space. I cannot see them,
but they are 'in the trash'.

The only way I know to really free this space on an external drive is to use
'unmount'. On 'unmount' Nautilus will ask me if i want to delete the trash.
'safely remove' and 'eject' will not do that.
So I think that even the most non-technical users will need 'unmount' if they
ever want to free some space on their drive.
A better solution would of course be, if 'safely remove' and 'eject' would be
merged to one command and that that command would also clear the trash.

[Bug 479740] Re: Copy and paste broken after using input method

2010-01-28 Thread kamereon
To me, this is actually the most annoying bug in Karmic!
It's just amazing how helpless one becomes, when copy and paste doesn't work.
The computer literally becomes unusable!

After booting, copy and paste will actually work.
After using IBus (in my case to type japanese) in GTK applications, copy and
paste will still work.
But: after using IBus in a Qt application, I get "QClipboard::setData: Cannot
set X11 selection owner for PRIMARY", and copy and paste will no longer work.

[Bug 284808] Re: laptop hibernates without apparent reason

2008-11-17 Thread kamereon
Yes, that's my impression too.

But only if i uncheck "activate screensaver when idle" in screensaver settings.
If I activate the screensaver, it will prevent the computer from hibernating as
long as mouse or keyobard actions will keep the screensaver from coming into
action.

Seems like the power manager will 'listen' to the screensaver only, but
not mouse or keyboard.

[Bug 296261] Re: Intrepid tries to kill my display

2008-11-14 Thread kamereon
I took this stuff from a live-session, is that OK?

I just scrolled through Xorg.0.log, not really knowing what I was doing, but
maybe it has to do with the output connector of the graphics-board. The display
is actuall detected correctly, the right modelines are stated, but xorg doesn't
seem to realize that the detected values are valid for output 2.
Since my display only has one simple vga input, I can only hook it to output 2
of the graphics board.

The only change I did to Xorg.conf was adding
Option "metamodes" "1440x900_60 +0+0; 1440x900 +0+0; nvidia-auto-select
+0+0"
to the "screen" section, wich was actually added by nvidia-settings.

[Bug 296261] [NEW] Intrepid tries to kill my display

2008-11-10 Thread kamereon
Public bug reported:

Sorry if this is a duplicate. I ve been reading through a bunch of screen
resolution bugs, but didn't find one quite matching my problem.
They usually deal with not being able to increase the screen resolution, my
problem is the other way around. If there is an existing bug I missed, please
feel free to close / merge...

The Intrepid LiveCD (x64) will boot into a screen resolution of 1600 x 1050 on
my system, which is way beyond the capabilities of my display. this causes the
picture to be distorted and flash like crazy. I somehow managed to get to the
preferences and change the resolution manually to match my display.

After installation, however, it would again run at 1600 x 1050. I almost
went blind trying to ajust the screen resolution once more.

Now there was one problem left: the login-screen is still 1600 x 1050,
flashing like crazy. Only after logging in will it decrease to the right
resolution.

For me, this is actually not such a big deal, I fixed it by installing the
nvidia-driver and adjusting the xorg.conf. But someone who is new to Linux
would probably have tossed the CD into the trash right away. Of course it's
cool to have a LiveCD running at the native resolution of the display that is
connected, but there is definitely no way ever, that all displays of all
manufacturers in the World can be detected correctly. I actually liked it
better in the old days, when you had a fairly low resolution after installation
and had to increase it manually, instead of having to find ways to decrease it
to the native resolution of your screen.

Ok, some people might never know that they could improve their screen if
it starts in a fairly low / safe resolution, but there could be a symbol
on the desktop "improve my screen" or somthing, which would only then
try to auto detect the display (giving the user the ability to hit
escape, if something goes wrong) or let people adjust the resolution
manually.

In the old days, if if someone killed their screen by messing with wrong
resolutions / refresh rates, they knew who to blame. I think that was
better than having your display fried by an Ubuntu LiveCD. :-)

[Bug 73240] Re: German keyboard layout - deadkeys by default

2008-06-19 Thread kamereon
I think this Bug needs a bit of discussion :-)

firstly, I could not reproduce a general dead key problem on several gutsy and
hardy (32 bit and 64 bit) machines with a clean german install. The standard
keyboard for german is always "generic 105 keys", and typing "^" + "a" will
correctly produce "â". Does anyone with a newly installed german ubuntu really
have a dead key problem?
Dead Keys also work if you boot to german from a LiveCD of Ubuntu or Xubuntu

secondly, it is true: one can not produce a "ñ" by typing "~" + "n". But this
is the same in german Windows XP!
One can also not type a "å" by hitting "°" + "a" But this is also the same in
Windows. Now I don't know anything about keyboard and localization standards,
but this may not be a bug, but simply a standard.

thirdly, the "^^ issue" is imho not a bug! If you hit "^", the computer will
wait for the next key to be pressed. Which would normally be something like the
"o" key, to produce an "ô". If you don't want an accented letter, you hit
the"^" key a second time, to get "^".
This is imho perfectly correct dead letter behaviour. Now I know that in
Windows, hitting "^" twice will produce "^^", BUT THIS IS A BUG IN WINDOWS! How
do you type a single "^" in Windows? You can't! I think that ubuntu handles the
dead key "^" correctly.

so:
a) does anyone really have a dead key problem on a freshly installed german
hardy (or LiveCD) ? (I think not!) But if they do, what are their keyboard
settings and locale?

b) do you type an "ñ" by hitting "~" + "n"? If so, we may have a bug
here. But then german Windows has the same problem!

c) the "^^ issue" is imho not a bug. How would you type a single "^"?

it correctly. (amd64 Gutsy)
I hope it's ok if i set 'confimed' on this.
