[Bug 1971656] Re: rtw89_pci failure on Lenovo P14s with Ubuntu 22.04

2022-05-05 Thread Larry Finger
As maintainer of an rtw89 repo at GitHub, I have seen lots of complaints
about this kind of hangups. Nearly all of these happen with Lenovo
laptops. The remainder are a few HP machines.

For some reason, the BIOS or the PCI interface in the Lenovo laptops are
incompatible with the PCI code used in RTW89. My laptop is a Toshiba
from 2014, and it never has any problems, thus I cannot diagnose the
difficulty. The same is true for the software developers in Taiwan, with
whom I have discussed the problem.

This is the first I have heard that the problem started/got worse around
April 11. That sounds like a candidate for bisection, which would have
to be done with the mainline kernel, or even better, the one at
wireless-next
(git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/wireless/wireless-
next.git). Due to special patches in the GitHub version needed to build
on older kernels, I upgrade the repo in batches, and lose the details of
each individual patch from wireless-testing.

External monitor display pink coloration in grayscale (HDMI)

Status in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Two days ago I upgraded to 22.04 LTS.
My laptop display works fine but my external monitor(HDMI port) has strong
pink coloration in grey scale / white areas of display. I put up a picture of a
NTSC colorbars. On the laptop display it is correct. When I slide it to the
external monitor it has distinct pink color in the 70% grey scale bar.The white
bar is correct as are the cyan, blue , yellow, red, etc. The pluge (program
lineup guide) black bars display correctly, thus no contrast problem. The only
visible problem is the pink in the 70% bars.
I suspected the monitor might be at fault, but I rebooted into my Windblows
11 (dual boot) both displays were again correct, as they had been in Ubuntu
until the Upgrade to 22.04.

That is the extent of by ability to analyze the problem. I suspect

[Bug 1900347] Current status

2022-04-06 Thread Larry C.
Dear Mr. Bacher,

I am a linux novice. You responded to a bug report I made in Oct
20, 2020. On February 26, 2021 there was a updated report posted here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/seahorse/+bug/1900347

So has this bug been fixed? If so were would the fixed package be? If
not when and how do bugs like this get resolved?

Thanks,

Larry C.

This also affects me. I did a fresh install of Ubuntu MATE 21.10. I can
also confirm that the procedure detailed by Norbert (nrbrtx) works to
bring back the functional indicator icon.

[Bug 1947708] [NEW] Cannot configure suspend-then-hibernate

2021-10-19 Thread Larry Skywalker
Public bug reported:

Previous bug 1947617 was closed because my swap space was insufficient.
Swap was increased to 24G and the problem remains.

Configuring login to suspend-then-hiberrnate when the lid is off and
configuring sleep so that hibernate happens 10 seconds after suspend,
when trying to test with:

sudo systemctl suspend-then-hibernate

I get:

Failed to suspend system, hibernate later via logind: Sleep verb
"suspend-then-hibernate" not supported

This could be a security vulnerability. If the user expects the system
to suspend (and then lock) when the lid is off and it does not work,
somebody could then just reopen the lid and get access.

[Bug 1947617] Re: Cannot configure suspend-then-hibernate

2021-10-19 Thread Larry Skywalker
I do not think that this bug report is invalid for multiple reasons (in order
of importance):
1. The error message is not related to the root you identified. If the root
cause is effectively a swap partition that is not big enough, maybe the error
should say so.
2. The swap size was configured by the ubuntu installer. I would expect that
the automatic installer configure the partition so that all the features are
available, especially hibernate on a laptop.
3. Why would swap size have anything to do with hibernate? The system can dump
memory in a regular file on the regular filesystem. Swapping is, as far as I
understand, a way to extend memory when RAM is insufficient, not a way to store
the whole volatile memory on disk.

Anyway, thanks for your time and effort.

[Bug 1947617] [NEW] Cannot configure suspend-then-hibernate

2021-10-18 Thread Larry Skywalker
Public bug reported:

Configuring login to suspend-then-hiberrnate when the lid is off and
configuring sleep so that hibernate happens 10 seconds after suspend,
when trying to test with:

sudo systemctl suspend-then-hibernate

I get:

Failed to suspend system, hibernate later via logind: Sleep verb
"suspend-then-hibernate" not supported

This could be a security vulnerability. If the user expects the system
to suspend (and then lock) when the lid is off and it does not work,
somebody could then just reopen the lid and get access.

[Bug 1944404] [NEW] [HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia, playback] No sound at all

2021-09-20 Thread Larry Jordan
Public bug reported:

Hi...my problem is that I am using the nVidia GTX card connected by HDMI
cable to a widescreen Samsung monitor that doesn't have speakers.
Ubuntu assumes I can use that to play audio. In reality I'm using
stereo speakers connected to the "center" output from the rear of the
computer. This works fine in windows, but not in Ubuntu 20.04. I've
tried several fixes to similar looking issues on line, but still I don't
get sound. The only option I have under settings is for the
HDMI/DisplayPort 2 - GM107 High Definition audio controller [GE Force
940 MX]. I've tried an old solution by adding hdajackretask and I've
tried adjusting volume levels using alsamixer, but those solutions
didn't help. Anyone have any other ideas? Thanks in advance.

[Bug 1927830] [NEW] HiDPI Yaru window controls are tiny after reboot

2021-05-08 Thread Larry Bushey
Public bug reported:

Information:
1. Distribution Release: Ubuntu MATE 21.04
2. Package: mate-control-center 1.24.2-0ubuntu1
3. Theme: Yaru-MATE-dark

Expected result: Window controls (buttons) for all themes retain HiDPI scaling
after reboot.
Actual result: When using HiDPI and either the Yaru-MATE-dark or
Yaru-MATE-light theme, after reboot, the window controls are not sized with
correct scaling. They appear tiny.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Select Yaru theme.
2. Select HiDPI display resolution.
3. Select HiDPI scaling in MATE Tweak.
4. Restart computer.

Workaround:
1. Open MATE Tweak.
2. Select 'Regular' scaling. (Selecting 'Auto' does not work to fix it.)
3. Select 'HiDPI' scaling.

Result:
Window controls are now scaled correctly.

I hope this is not too contorted. I tried 3 keys, a RSA 2048
key created in 2012, a DSA 1024 key created in 2007, and a RSA 2048 key
created in 2019. The "Import Key" menu option in Seahorse wont import
either a binary nor an armored (asc) version for any of these keys. For either
key version of any key an error message pops up "The information in this key
has not yet been verified" and underneath the message are the details of the
key. In the upper right corner "Import" appears and clicking on it does
nothing. The key is not imported.

In the file manager window a double click of the asc version of the key
or using the menu choice "Open with Import Key" will import the key. A
message apperars "the key blaa blaa has been imported". And infact it
has. With the binary version of the key "keyfile.pgp" nothing works, no
error message no nothing. This binary version can be imported using a
terminal. As was noted in the other bug report, the sucessfully added
keys are only listed after Seahorse is stopped and restarted.

And finally Seahorse menu option "Export" will only export a binary
version of keys even thought one of the choices is to export the key as
an armored ".asc" version.

I hope this is clear and detailed enough.

Larry

[Bug 1900347] [NEW] Doesn't import gpg keys Doesn't export armored (asc) gpg keys

2020-10-18 Thread Larry C.
Public bug reported:

Very similar to bug # 1577198. Seahorse (Passwords and Keys) won't
import gpg keys. But if I double click on the gpg key in the file
manager it will show as imported after I restart Seahorse. After keys
are imported (using the double click method or CLI) they can only be
exported as binary keys i.e. keyname.pgp. If I try the option to export
as a keyname.asc version (armored) I only get the same binary key.
Everything works fine with gpg in a terminal.

This is with a fresh install of 20.04.1, Seahorse 3.36-1 with Seahorse-
daemon and Seahorse-nautilis installed. The Gnupg version is 2.2.19

[Bug 957843] Re: files in eCryptFS Private directory get corrupted

Using eCryptfs-utils (111-0ubuntu7) from the repos.

I have an encrypted directory containing three types of files: .png,
mp3, .md. Upon mounting, the .png and .mp3 files are corrupted and are
not viewable/playable. The .md text file, however, works as expected.

I installed 19.10 on my computer which is connected to a KVM switch. The
keyboard and mouse no longer work. They worked just fine with 19.04.
What am I missing? I don't get any error messages or other indication of
a problemthey just don't work.

I even went the route of installing 19.04 and upgrading to 19.10. also did
version 18 and upgraded. Same issue. Tried a couple of KVM swtiches. All
work fine in previous versions hooked up to a KVM switch, and so do my windows
10 systems and servers.

Since 19.04 is useless without patching I have to settle for version 18
or go to another linux based system like oracle. At some point for long
term support 18 will go away and only 19 will be supported. Unless the
kvm switch issue is resolved I and a WHOLE lot of others will be moving
on to other versions of linux. I can have my business get shut down
because of poor testing on Ubuntu's part that mice and keyboards in a
data center all of sudden stop working through kvms.

Thank you.
Larry Scott

[Bug 1239578] Re: No wireless support for Realtek RTL8192EE [10ec:818b]

2019-07-26 Thread Larry Finger
If anyone still has this problem, and the card, please run the command
'lspci'. Find the line that describes the RTL8192EE and note the first
column, which will be something like "04:00.0". This is the bus and
number for the device. Then run 'sudo lspci -s nn:mm -', where hh:mm
is replaced by the bus and number string noted above. Post the output of
the last command.

2019-07-25 Thread Larry Finger
I reached my contact at Realtek. He analyzed the output and thinks that
this particular chip has a faulty EFUSE programming, or that it possible
was not programmed in the factory. Either case should have been caught
in testing, but mistakes happen.

Has this card been tested on Windows 10?

[Bug 1822973] Re: Clicking link in slack snap under KDE causes infinite loop of retrying xdg-open

2019-05-15 Thread Larry Garfield
I can confirm the fix from Adan Koch. I went into the Fonts panel,
changed the anti-aliasing settings, Apply, change them back, Apply. Now
Slack links are opening almost immediately like in every other
application. I did not have to restart Slack.

Thanks Adan!

[Bug 1828074] [NEW] Memory usage issues with large Apache httpd configuration files

2019-05-07 Thread Larry Irwin
Public bug reported:

This bug in libaugeas was fixed in version 1.11.0, but is not in the 18.04.2

See: https://github.com/hercules-team/augeas/issues/569
I found it using certbot and started a bug report there.
See: https://github.com/certbot/certbot/issues/7035

[Bug 1822973] Re: Clicking link in slack snap under KDE causes infinite loop of retrying xdg-open

2019-04-29 Thread Larry Garfield
I can confirm this as well. For me it's only happening in Slack; a link
will eventually open in the browser, after well over a minute rather
than the 2 seconds previously. So far that's the only application I've
found where it happens. Slack was installed via snap back on 18.10.

I am not sure I know what a cold boot is but that partition is not gone
yet. I can try once I know what it is. This is on an older Dell
Dimension 8400 tower. Dual booting with Win 7 and separate drive with
Win XP. This machine is what I use as a hobby for some gaming my laptop
with dual boot Win 10, Linux Cinnamon 18.3 and Ubuntu Bionic Beaver
won't do with ease. Laptop heats now and shuts down. Off topic but let
me know and I'll try it. Thanks for your help and efforts.

Re: [Bug 1820687] Re: Sound issue, or rather, lack of sound

2019-03-18 Thread Larry Gomez via ubuntu-bugs
I tried launching an earlier kernel, which has worked in the past. It
did not this time and so I downloaded Linux Mint 19.1 to run side by
side and transfer from its predecessor 18.3 to the newest one and when
done will eliminate the elder partition. I have done that before, as
well. This one was stubborn. The problem occurred once before in Ubuntu
and I updated by clean install that time as well. I find it a bit
tedious to state the many terminal commands suggested that I tried. I am
still not so technically savvy. I do have a hands on like most around me
don't but I am not there yet as far as a guru or wizard.

I have been using a workaround submitted by Ronan Mooney, listed as #11
on https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2-signed/+bug/1753518

The workaround has enabled me to complete upgrades.

I know there is a newer version out, but after uninstalling from
software center and reinstalling, crash was the same. Debian updates
don't seem to be available (a web site is provided, but it apparently
doesn't exist). I tried downloading the tar file, but it failed saying
it couldn't find qt5 (even after I installed qt5). Kind of like this
game, hope it can be fixed.

Just in case, I'm on Ubuntu 18.04.1

No problem, although availability is part of the CIA triad, and if there is

[Bug 1239578] Re: No wireless support for Realtek RTL8192EE [10ec:818b]

2018-11-29 Thread Larry Finger
None of my hardware can duplicate this problem. Is the firmware
installed? Look at the dmesg output to look for firmware failures.

If you do have the correct firmware, there are two options that might
help. Try the following:

sudo modprobe -rv rtl8192ee
sudo modprobe -v rtl8192ee aspm=0

If that does not help, then try

sudo modprobe -rv rtl8192ee
sudo modprobe -v rtl8192ee msi=0

If any other options show up, then your /etc/modprobe.d/ directory is
screwed up. Delete the offending files and try again.

If one of those options helps, then create
/etc/modprobe.d/50-rtl8192ee.conf (as root), and add the single line
containing "options rtl8192ee =0" where is the option you want
to set.

Subject: [Bug 1800555] Re: Computer slow. Error reports appear.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug.  I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 1791822] [NEW] Internal display is blank

2018-09-10 Thread Larry Reaves
Public bug reported:

After upgrading all packages and rebooting today, the internal display
is blank. An external display works fine. I believe I also ran
upgrades on Friday, so it was a fairly recent package. This is a

was an Xorg upgrade.

[Bug 1789419] [NEW] lynx will not recognize white space in filenames

2018-08-28 Thread Larry Tate
Public bug reported:

I'm using a script to find a list of all .pdf files on a url. But lynx
seems to have a problem with spaces in filenames. Here's the script:

lynx --dump http://www.somesite/here/ | awk '/http/{print $2} | grep
pdf > ~/Desktop/links.txt

This works as expected until there is a .pdf with whitespace in the
filename. Lynx seems to truncate the filename at the whitespace.

[Bug 1786607] [NEW] gnome-keyring caches PGP password eternally

2018-08-11 Thread Larry Tate
Public bug reported:

I've been using the program `Pass` to manage my passwords, which uses a
PGP key that I created for this purpose. I began noticing that after my
first use of the passphrase gnome-keyring would cache the passphrase and
no longer request it. This is a security issue as anyone with access to
my machine can gain access to all of my passwords.

I assumed the settings could be tweaked, so I used `dconf-editor` to
edit the `gpg-cache-method` file to use `timeout` instead of the default
setting. I also changed the `gpg-cache-ttl` to 1 second from the
default, which was 300 I believe. I then restarted the keyring with `$
gnome-keyring-daemon -r`.

This successfully reset the keyring and I was prompted for my password.
However, it only worked once. After entering the password, gnome-keyring
cached my password and this survives logging out or restarting the
computer.

[Bug 1582930] Re: psensor CPU usage jumps when graph window loses focus

2017-12-01 Thread Larry Wilson
It has been well over 12 months now and still the fix version 1.1.5 is
*not* in the main repositories for 16.04.

So, simple questions:
Why not?, and
Why is to so?

[Bug 1464321] Re: No sound output through docking station headphones jack for Dell Latitude E5450

2017-11-26 Thread Larry Brown
I have a Dell D630 Latitude laptop plugged into a Dell PR01X port
replicator/dock station. I have been struggling with this problem, too.
I solved my problem by changing the configuration in "Pulse Audio Volume
Control" from "Analog Duplex" to "Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output +
Analog Stereo Input". Playback through the audio headphone jack in the
dock station works.

[Bug 1696216] Re: package linux-image-4.8.0-54-generic (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 128

2017-06-07 Thread Larry
I am new to the Linux environment and experienced this problem on my 1st
install so I reinstalled the Ubuntu system figuring that I had done something
wrong with the 1st Install.
After this 2nd install, I saw that there was a System Update listed and
attempted to install this update and the update got about half way and froze.
Please help me. I don't know what to do next.

This bug is for backporting the driver. A firmware file also needs to be

[Bug 1675864] [NEW] intltool_update_potfile FILTER arg doesn't work as expected

2017-03-24 Thread Larry Price
Public bug reported:

When using intltool_update_potfile, an optional list of regular
expressions can be passed in with the FILTER keyword. If passing in
multiple regular expressions, source files are allowed through if they
do not match one or more of the regular expressions (also allowing for
duplicate entries). In my opinion, the expected behavior is that any
source file that matches one of the given FILTER regular expressions
should be removed from the list of files.

[Bug 1671938] Re: Need to fix some package dependencies in order not to force any Libertine backends on default installs

2017-03-13 Thread Larry Price

guilt-free. :P

I've linked a branch with the "full" fix and a version bump that we'll
need to dual-land with ubuntu-app-launch.
