This bug report gave me the idea, I tried it just now with Ubuntu Natty 32-bit desktop on a persistent USB install, and I can confirm that it works. Nice one! Now I have a killer USB stick. The only thing I am unsure about is that I can't think of a way to check within the persistence file whether the home directory for the added user is encrypted. Got the same problem on a Lenovo s10e netbook. This is a showstopping bug! To make matters worse, Ubuntu Classic only shows me a flickering white triangle on the bottom left of the screen, and unity gives me only a completely black screen. End result: I have no usable desktop environment, where gnome and KDE 4.6.2 both worked perfectly before the upgrade. This means Ubuntu Natty is hands down the worst linux I have ever used. Got the same bug since upgrading to Maverick today. Opening a tty session (ctrl-alt-F1) and then returning to the desktop (ctrl-alt-F7) causes the wallpaper to be drawn properly.
