It is causing me issues that I am unsure of how best to resolve, and I consider myself to be a reasonably technical user. I have just updated (and rebooted just to be sure). The menu entry: System-Administration-NVIDIA X Server Settings does not ask for a super-user pasword. So consequently it can't write to /etc/X11/xorg.conf. [Bug 273797] Re: nVidia doesn't support Xrandr so monitor resolution is wrong
I have had a problem with the nvidia drivers and my hardware ever since trying Intrepid at Alpha 5. So I reverted to the nv driver until yesterday. I thought I'd try again. The problem is that I only get 1024x768 *every* time I reboot. Even if I use the nvidia-settings tool to change it to 1152x864 (which is better but the only other option I get is 1360x768). In the System -Preferences-Screen resolution, the only highest resolution offered is1024x768. I have an Nvidia 9500Gt card and my Monitor (A Dell M991 CRT) is connected via a Belkin KVM on the VGA port. It seems that there is a problem detecting my monitor. Hardy (with an older Nvidia card [5200?]) used to work fine through the same KVM and with the same Monitor. I've attached my Xorg.0.log. If I can fix it by hand coding an xorg.conf that would be fine for now. But seeing how Intrepid seems to create a blank xorg.conf and gather all the needed data automatically I was unsure if my changes would be accepted or simply overwritten on each reboot. Ahhh; is that where it came from. I also have it chewing up tons cycles on my laptop but it isn't installed on my desktop (both Intrepid since Alpha5). I do remember installing Kubuntu on a separate partition although I have a shared home partition so perhaps it has come from there? I will remove it now. I couldn't work out why I had it/if it was necessary for something. I don't have any smartcards. Update: My Intrepid build is up-to-date as of yesterday. Printing from Firefox seems OK as long as the page size is set correctly. It defaults to US Letter even though all other settings are for the UK (en_GB etc..). If I do not chnage the page size in Firefox the print job gets sent to the printer but the printer LCD shows, very briefly the following messages: processing cancelling job. This all happens within a second or two and no pages are actually printed. If I set the page size to A4 and try again, from Firefox, it prints fine. From other applications, I am having this problem. Printing from within OOo or Acrobat Reader, or Envince does not work. I get the same error as above. The job is queued, transmitted and received by the printer, but the job is almost immediately cancelled. OK - I ran a couple of test prints from Intrepid and it is certainly much better :-) If, however I try to print the same contents (select pages 1-2 in the print dialogue) of the Firefox browser from the URL I posted in the original report, I do not get any errors on the printer, it does not create a first blank page, but, the second page is still corrupted with the wrapped text issue. I also printed a couple of pages of a manual from Envince twice. The first time round the print output itself was fine, but I think I got an extra blank page so I tried again. The second time it wouldn't print at all - an error dialogue popped up saying (IIRC) Failed to Print: Too many printing errors or something similar. Printing the same pages from within Adobe Acrobat Reader was perfectly fine however. So, my conclusion is that it seems a great deal improved from the last time I tried but I am not sure if it is completely fixed - or if the remaining problems are more to do with the content or rendering applications. The URL test especially; as the printed output has exactly the same errors as in my original post I wonder if there is a bug in Firefox or something... I have attached the output of printingbuginfo. Just to throw in my metaphorical towel. Chip Bennet, who I have found myself agreeing with from the beginning and who has a much better way with words than me, has apparently actually gone and read the agreement that is the final piece of this puzzle. In comment 508: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox-3.0/+bug/269656/comments/508 he basically concludes that the new wording of the terms do not appear to require any concrete action; in fact the action is now non- compulsory: ... I see no reason for the services not to be enabled by default - with respect to matters of software freedom. (I still contend that the matter of the *usefulness* of those services is not germane to the issues at hand and under discussion in this bug report.) Having just read the terms myself here (http://launchpadlibrarian.net/17836931/about_rights_expanded.png), I concur with Chip completely. The language is plain (even I can understand it) and does not appear to impose any restrictions on my usage. In reality, it simply explains to me that the service might not be 100% effective. I'd love to see PJ's analysis but it looks fine by me. +1 to continue including Firefox in main. This has been a very exhilarating experience. A large cohort of community members have been able to have their say and it would seem that the majority have been very clearly heard. A most excellent outcome seems imminent for all involved. PS - The image of the terms has a major typo however: *Items 4 and 5 are the same*. In this state, FF is *not* Free software; you are required to accept a usage policy irrespective of how conspicuous or not that agreement happens to be. These mock-ups are infinitely better than where we were just a couple of days ago. So for that I am pleased and would be fairly comfortable with these proposals as they stand. I do have some preferences and still a concern or two however: 1. Of the two first-page images the top one is better as there is no button on the toolbar that seems to *need* to be clicked. 2. I would really appreciate it if Ubuntu/Canonical (if Mozilla can't or wont) could distribute Firefox with the Website Services disabled by default (we are running Linux after all so their benefit is a somewhat moot point) so that the need for the 'user agreement' becomes a requirement only *after* the user has made a concious choice to turn on these services. But, as I said. They look much better and don't seem to require any affirmative action by the user. Whether Firefox is Free Software I am really not sure. I don't think it is with this agreement still seemingly required. So maybe it needs to go into multiverse anyway. I have had a total mare with this too... I have recently built a new PC: ASRock P43R1600Twins mobo, Intel 8400 Core2 Duo, Nvidia 9500GT, 2G DDR2 8500. Initially I installed Hardy 8.04.1 and all was OK but the hardware detection didn't recognise my new 9500GT card. I also started getting LAN problems due to the dhclient.conf requesting mtu and me having a crap router :-). I updated the mobo BIOS to the latest version and Hardy wouldn't boot. At all. Even the Live CD would'nt boot. After a long time it just dropped to a shell in the initramfs. So I though I'd try Intrepid. Live CD works, removing the line for mtu in dhclient.conf fixes the LAN problem and the hardware detection found my Nvidia card :-) However - after enabling it I have had no end of issues. EVERY time I reboot, the system drops back to a totally unusable 640x480 or lower resolution and doesn't want to load the nvidia driver. I have tried both the 177 and 173 releases. I got completely fscked after trying to use synaptic to install or uninstall these drivers and get to a stable display but it has all failed. I tried using nvidia-xconfig to create a new xorg.conf but after each rebot, a new xorg is created that will not let me select any resultions other than 640 or 320! My VGA 19 Dell M991 monitor was connected through a Belkin KVM. I have also hard cabled the monitor to see if this makes any difference. I am now re-installing Ibex and will not install the nvidia driver for a while - the default install gives me a 1152x864 resolution I guess using the vesa or nv driver. The display does flicker quite a bit in this configuration, but at least I can fit applications on the screen. Hope this helps and please ask if you want me to test anything - I have a spare partition so I could set up a secondary install to test if it will help. Hi all, I have what sounds like a similar problem to others on this thread. My setup is Ubuntu 7.04 (Desktop, 32bit) on an AMD 64 3200+ with a gig of DDR Ram. I have two printers: * A monochrome HP LaserJet 6L connected on LPT1, * A Konica Minolta 2530DL Network attached colour laser printer. The HP Laserjet printer is fine all the time. The 2530DL works fine most of the time but sometimes the printer will take an age (30mins+) to print something. Opening the print queue and looking at the printer properties gives me messages such as - network host busy trying again in 30secs, or the job might be printing but the percentage complete sits at odd figures like 36% for ages. Repeatedly opening and closing the printer queue and pausing and resuming things doesn't seem to make much difference. It is this end that is the problem, the print job is not being sent to the printer, it's not that the printer is taking an age to process the job itself. The weird thing is, that once the printer bursts into life, all subsequent jobs are fine... for a while at least. I'm happy to do some digging if someone has some decent questions!
