[Bug 1967784] [NEW] After install reboot was unsuccessful with dark screen.

2022-04-04 Thread lunix
Public bug reported:

Installation of 21.10 beta 4-2-2022 went well. Both screens were normal and
active. Reboot did not produce a screen to login, they were both dark
following the DELL post screen. I have a DELL XPS I5 with two monitors. One
on DVI and the other a Display Video connection. Both screens dark. I am also
using an MSATA1 SSD as a hard drive.

[Bug 1876506] Re: eoan to focal upgrade hangs when lvm snapshot is present

2020-08-17 Thread lunix
I apologize if this is not relevant to this blocking bug. I am trying to help
a friend.
Machine is dual boot Windows 10 and Ubuntu 18.04 Has Extended Partition where
Ubuntu went into Parition 5. Machine worked fine with 18.04. Tried upgrade
offered to Ubuntu 19,04 which failed and won't no longer boots to Ubuntu
selection from GRUB but Windows still boots. Tried a fresh install of 20.04
which resulted in:

error: file '/boot/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod' not found.
Entering rescue mode...

So won't boot either OS now.

I am hopeful to do a fresh install of Ubuntu 18.04-5 next in hopes that
the machine will work again. Attached is the Disk partitioning table if
this is of interest.

[Bug 1612010] [NEW] Lockscreen doesn't turn off the screen

2016-08-10 Thread lunix
Public bug reported:

Lockscreen doesn't turn off the screen (saw it via Bug # 1292041 now closed)
Ctrl=Alt+L or Super+L shortcut works and blanks the screen
requiring me to type my password again to activate session.

However my System-Settings -> Brightness & Lock is set to:
Turn screen off when inactive for: 30 minutes
Lock: OFF
Lock screen after: Screen turns off (is grayed out)
Require my password when waking from suspend (unchecked and grayed out)

I have dual monitors. Both are Samsung and this feature is highly
intermittent, meaning sometimes it works and often it doesn't.
For example it hasn't worked for days but I changed the System-Settings
from 30-minutes to 1-min. and it started working without a reboot.

Is it possible that a kernel update changes some value that alters the
setting? Then when I change the time in the window it repopulates a value?

I am on Ubuntu 16.04.1 but I have seen this issue for years now.

[Bug 791506] Re: Using an external USB microphone.

2014-11-26 Thread lunix
This bug is still happening in both 12.04 and 12.10.
Simple to reproduce.
Use laptop with analogue built in Microphone. Plug in a USB Microphone and
switch to it.
When rebooting Ubuntu the analogue microphone is re-activated and NOT the last
Microphone used
which was the USB Microphone.
In addition going to Sound Settings and clicking on Input will cause the
Microphone to fall off the
USB Microphone and onto the built in Analogue Microphone forcing the user to
then reselect the
USB Microphone. What is the likely hood of this ever getting fixed?

[Bug 1116315] Re: Sound recording with Ubuntu 12 on EeePC 1001PX

2013-11-09 Thread lunix
I was disappointed to find that on both 13.04 and 13.10 that Sound Recorder is
still broken. It looks like we don't have a
maintainer. Audacity does work so at least we have a work around. My
Grandson uses Sound Recorder to practice his
Saxaphone and it is used for other purposes as well by me. It is still
downloadable via the Software Center so I would make
a plea for some kind person who knows how to debug and fix this simple and easy
to use application.

[Bug 1198497] [NEW] Installation fails when fdisk doesn't have enough spare slots

2013-07-06 Thread lunix
Public bug reported:

Multiple times now Ubuntu installation fails without any information when the
fdisk table is full. I.E. no spare slots to create an
extended partition. This has happened on multiple HP machines with WIndows 7
pre-loaded where a restore partition is present along with the normal NTFS for
Windows 7 and another partition from the factory. The issue I am concerned
about is that
all versions of Ubuntu through 13.04 just hang and the user is left wondering
what happened. I would like to see a proper
check made for no fdisk partition available and a coherent message put up on
the screen telling the user what has happened.
Perhaps they need to install a second hard drive. In my case I used gpart to
remove the restore partion since I had backup
drives and then the installation went well. Again, it is the hang with no
feedback to the user that I am concerned about.

Here is the actual gparted snapshot from the last time I had an
installation fail. Keep mind that this has happened on many machines
and I think a user friendly message is mandatory rather than no message
on failure.

Re: [Bug 886975] Re: Lenovo sound chip Conexant CX20549 Venice doesn't work correctly.

2012-11-19 Thread lunix
I really appreciate your working on this.
Unfortunately the computer with the problem is owned by a friend in another
town.

I don't often see him and certainly don't want to upset his stability. If
no one else can
do this then I would consider driving to him and trying the fix. I was
just hoping to have
it fixed magically during one of the upcoming updates from Ubuntu.

Cheers,
Bob

   Kernel: 3.0.0-12-generic-pae#20-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 7 16:37:17 UTC 2011

   Problems:
   1) Integrated microphone doesn't work at all because the driver uses
node 0x14 instead of 0x15 for integrated mic and node 0x12 instead of 0x14
 for external mic.
   2) Sound output is muted in the 0% - unamplified part of the volume
slider and is working in the unamplified - 100% - part only; the
driver doesn't allow amplified part because sound is distorted over 0dB of
the PCM level so there is no need amplified part of the volume slider.

Solution: Attached patch is fixing nodes of integrated and external
microphone and is removing the amplified part of the volume slider.

[Bug 1015732] [NEW] Double entry for Skype in Software Center not seen in Synaptic

2012-06-20 Thread lunix
Public bug reported:

I am noticing that the Software Center has two entries on my system for Skype.
They are both identical although different wording. Mine says:
Skype (followed by stars (502))
skype (Notice the lowercase 's' in Skype.

Then below is another instance that reads:
Skype (followed by stars (502))
Skype Internet Telephony

Both are shown as installed although only one Skype has been installed.

Skype claims this is a bug in the SoftWare Center but so far I can't figure out
where the entries really are
and what to do about.

If I delete one of these then Skype is gone and I am convinced by clicking on

that they are the same version of SKype.

Now what I have determined is that this only happens when Ubuntu 12.04 was not
freshly installed
but was done via the upgrade method over the Internet. If one does a fresh
install then the
Software Center does not have the duplication.

Does anyone else see this or have an idea how I can clean it up?

I would prefer to get responses from people who have also seen this and have
found a solution
rather than rampant speculation.

I can send a screen shot to anyone requesting directly to their email
account.

[Bug 891613] Re: Skype Icon shows twice while seaching for it at software-center

2012-06-20 Thread lunix
I am not 100% sure of this comment but I think the double entries only
show up when Ubuntu 11.04 has been installed via an upgrade path.
Fresh install seems to fix the double entry issue for Skype.

[Bug 891613] Re: Skype Icon shows twice while seaching for it at software-center

2012-06-20 Thread lunix
I did some testing and now have some new insight for the lucky person that
might help out with this issue.
If I do a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10 and then bring up the Software Center
it shows Skype as something I can click on.
If I install Skype that way two bad things happen. 1) I get the now
discontinued version of Skype instead of the new one released recently. 2) I
get the double entries being discussed here once the older Skype is installed
in this manor. Once I take this
path even if I remove the older version and use the method described below I
always get double entries.

I think the older version which was public was skype-2.2.0.2.28

However, If I download from Skype the now shipping version of
skype_precise_4.0.0.7-1_amd64.deb or the 32-bit version
if that is what is needed and double click on it. The Software Center then
offers to install it. When this completes I only
see the one entry and all is well.

[Bug 982357] [NEW] I can not get proper resolution for my Samsunjg SyncMaster 226BW monitor

2012-04-15 Thread lunix
Public bug reported:

My monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 226BW. It has an optimal resolution of
1680x1050 which Ubuntu 12.04 is not finding. All I get is 1024x768.

I am able to manually set the optimal resolution with the xrandr command
although I am still having trouble making it stick through a reboot or relogin.

[Bug 642421] Re: Maverick could not load /lib/modules/2.6.35-22-generic/modules.dep

2011-01-18 Thread lunix
I finally got up the nerve to add the kernel to my Intel based 64-bit system.
The error message is indeed gone. I got out a stop watch and the boot time
for me is 25-seconds prior and after the patch so no increase in speed booting
but I don't have to look at the error message any longer which is nice.
25-seconds booting is pretty phenomenal in my view.

Thanks Andy and sorry for the delay.

2011-01-15 Thread lunix

Once i figured out to install headers-all before headers, it went
smoothly - thanks so much for the patch!

 --

I have been resisting putting the patch on as I share
this machine with others and I didn't want to upset anything or screw up in
the order. I suppose I could just boot from one of the other kernels if
something went wrong.

Perhaps someone who has been successful, apparently all of you might post an
extra procedure for those that are used to just going through the normal
update options.
Will this patch be released as an update?

I have a 64-bit machine. It looks like I need to install:
linux-image-2.6.35-25-generic_2.6.35-25.43lp642421v201101091714_amd64.deb

linux-headers-2.6.35-25_2.6.35-25.43lp642421v201101091714_all.deb

linux-
headers-2.6.35-25-generic_2.6.35-25.43lp642421v201101091714_amd64.deb

Then do I reboot and come up on this and then apply the patch or apply the
patch straight away while running the older kernel?

0001-UBUNTU-SAUCE-ensure-root-is-ready-before-running-use.patch

Do I just type as root: patch
0001-UBUNTU-SAUCE-ensure-root-is-ready-before-running-use.patch

Does it matter what directory the above patch file is in when I run the
patch command?

[Bug 642421] Re: Maverick could not load /lib/modules/2.6.35-22-generic/modules.dep

2011-01-10 Thread lunix
Its not clear to me that I would call it a cosmetic issue since quite a delay
is introduced on each boot.
Does the fix eliminate that delay? Also, what is considered cosmetic to a
programmer is not cosmetic
to grandpa or an ordinary user of the OS in my opinion.

Will this patch be distributed in a normal update sometime soon?

[Bug 366535] Re: Kubuntu registers itself in /boot/grub/menu.lst as Ubuntu

2010-12-05 Thread lunix
Out of curiosity, why do a dual boot at all? Instead I was thinking
one could install Ubuntu and then also install the KDE desktop. At
login time you are allowed to choose which of many desktops you want to
run for the session. This would give you both worlds without having to
tie up so much disk space along with the added complexity of a dual boot
I would think.

[Bug 642421] Re: Maverick could not load /lib/modules/2.6.35-22-generic/modules.dep

2010-10-24 Thread lunix
I could easily be mis-remembering but after doing an upgrade from 10.04
- 10.10 everything worked fine. This system is an I5 64-bit
installation and it has Ugh, windows 7 as a bootable partition. I
never boot into Windows 7 but a relative needed something done from
Windows 7 so I did allowed it to get the latest updates. After that I
could no longer boot into Ubuntu or Windows 7 as Windows 7 had rewritten
the MBR.

To fix this I followed the following article.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows
Which told me to do:
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/media/0d104aff-ec8c-44c8-b811-92b993823444
/dev/sda
Where I replaced the hex numbers with mine. This allowed me to see grub2
menus and select Ubuntu again. All went well, except that is when I noticed
the issue we are discussing here.

Bryce,

If you are on Skype contact me via separate email and we can
test this out and have clarify the issue. I am about 96% sure that
I tested this with the non-proprietary nvidia driver with a friend and
we still had the problem. If that is the case I am not happy about

If three vendors are having the same problem, then the problem is

Perhaps you should check with the Vino server folks or consider
replacing Vino with something that works.

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: compiz

When using the nvidia-restricted or some ATI drivers and compiz desktop
effects the vnc server will not refresh the screen. This is being caused by
the xserver not getting damaged by the nvidia-restricted drivers. Linked
bugs confirm this is not an issue on intel chipsets or nv driver.

 Steps to reproduce:
 Enable desktop-effects (default) with nvidia-restricted, virtualBox's display
or some ATI driver like RV610
 Enable remote desktop
 Connect with VNC

 Results:
You see a screen snapshot of your desktop but if you click a menu item there
are no updates to the screen.
 Notes:
If you close and restart the vnc session, you get an updated snapshot but
 still no refreshes.

 Workarounds:
Use the -noxdamage argument with vncviewer. This is really inefficient and
bandwidth hungry since the whole screen refreshes.
Kill compiz and use a different wm (metacity).

This bug has been confirmed by many others with linked reports. Might be an
issue with xorg since there is a report of ATI drivers with similar issues in

Re: [Bug 353126] Re: Compiz / vnc screen refresh with nvidia-restricted driver/VirtualBox/ATI fglrx driver using X.org prior to release 7.5

2010-04-15 Thread lunix
The problem is still here Lucid - Lucid.
The only way it works is if all screen enhancements, i.e. Compiz is
turned off. No refresh happens if any of the special Compiz features
are deployed. With all turned off then screen refreshes to the initiating
machine.

Are you still having this issue with Beta2? Does the target machine have
/desktop/gnome/remote_access/disable_xdamage checked? I have no issues
going from lucid Beta2  to lucid Beta2 without that option checked, but
had issues going to a karmic machine without it checked. Once checked on
the karmic machine(s) I have no further issues using remote access.

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: compiz

When using the nvidia-restricted or some ATI drivers and compiz desktop
effects the vnc server will not refresh the screen. This is being caused by
the xserver not getting damaged by the nvidia-restricted drivers. Linked
bugs confirm this is not an issue on intel chipsets or nv driver.

 Steps to reproduce:
 Enable desktop-effects (default) with nvidia-restricted, virtualBox's display
or some ATI driver like RV610
 Enable remote desktop
 Connect with VNC

 Results:
You see a screen snapshot of your desktop but if you click a menu item there
are no updates to the screen.
 Notes:
If you close and restart the vnc session, you get an updated snapshot but
 still no refreshes.

 Workarounds:
Use the -noxdamage argument with vncviewer. This is really inefficient and
bandwidth hungry since the whole screen refreshes.
Kill compiz and use a different wm (metacity).

This bug has been confirmed by many others with linked reports. Might be an
issue with xorg since there is a report of ATI drivers with similar issues in
 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/328559 .

[Bug 521955] [NEW] second user ends up with white rectangle on desktop that can not be removed without logging off.

2010-02-14 Thread lunix
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

Description:Ubuntu 9.10
Release:9.10
How to reproduce.
1) create a second user
2) Use switch user to login to that session and login which typically comes up
on the CTRL-ALT-F9 key
3) Switch back via CTRL-ALT-F7 to first user instance. You will need to enter
your password again
4) Insert any device. I used a USB stick. Wait for gnome to recognize the
device
5) Switch back to CTRL-ALT-F9 second user instance and notice the white blank
rectangle on the screen.
No ability to close that white screen, minimize it or maximize. It seems
impossible to get rid of without logging off the user.
6) Go back to CTRL-ALT-F7 and right click on the device to safely remove and
close windows associated with it
7) Go back to CTRL-ALT-F9 and notice that white screen is still present (Note:
my wife uses the alternate session and is
annoyed by her desktop showing this white rectangle.

Please see screen shot.

[Bug 514997] [NEW] Dell E153Fpf 15 monitor not supported for native resolution

2010-01-30 Thread lunix
Public bug reported:

I am on Ubuntu 9.10.
This is a feature request.

I am using a Dell E153FPf 15 lcd monitor and it is not being recognized, so it
defaults to a very low resolution compared to the native resolution. 640 X
480 and 800 X 600. The native resolution is 1024 X 768 @ 60 Hz. I was able
to get it working at that resolution with the xrandr utility but that was
painful learning it and an upgrade is likely to require the time to do it again.
Here are the lines I used along with the specifications for the monitor that I
am hopeful will allow you to incorporate support in a subsequent release.

gtf 1024 768 60 (returns)
modeline 1024x768_60.00 64.11 1024 1080 1184 1344 768 769 772 796 -Hsync
+Vsync

crt 1024 768 60 returns a slighly different set of numbers. I used the above
though. But here is the results of that one:
modeline 1024x768_60.00 63.50 1024 1072 1176 1328 768 771 775 796 -hsync
+vsync

The follow was taken from:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/monitors/E153FPTc/English/about.htm#Specifications

Resolution

Horizontal scan range 30 kHz to 63 kHz (automatic)

Vertical scan range 56 Hz to 76 Hz (automatic)

Optimal preset resolution 1024 x 768 at 60 Hz

Highest preset resolution 1024 x 768 at 75 Hz
Dell guarantees image size and centering for all preset modes listed in the
following table.

[Bug 378918] [NEW] SAMSUNG SyncMaster 930B not recognized using Nvidia GeForce 6200

2009-05-20 Thread lunix
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nv

NVIDIA config doesn't detect my Samsung SyncMaster 930B LCD monitor.
It comes up as unknown as a CRT.
I am using an NVIDIA GeForce 6200 graphics adapter card.
lspci | grep -i nvidia returns:
1:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV44A [GeForce 6200] (rev
a1)
lspci -n returns:
01:00.0 0300: 10de:0221 (rev a1)

I am not 100% sure but I think I remember Ubuntu 8.10 did detect this
monitor ok.

SUSE 11.0 and 11.1 does detect the monitor.

[Bug 366535] [NEW] Kubuntu registers itself in /boot/grub/menu.lst as Ubuntu

2009-04-24 Thread lunix
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub-choose-default

I installed Ubuntu first and then Kubuntu as a dual boot on a 160-GB harddrive.
All went well.

The only problem is that Kubuntu registers itself in /boot/grub/menu.lst as
Ubuntu
so I have two Ubuntu's and I can't determine which is which without actually
booting them.

This is trivial I realize since anyone that knows how can edit menu.lst but
none the less it makes it confusing.
