[Bug 1839756] [NEW] Nvidia driver options are not easy to understand
Public bug reported: I have just upgraded to Ubuntu 18.04.3LTS, and the options I have for my nvidia driver are shown in the screenshot. I dont understand why I have the option for an older, untested version of the driver as well as the latest version. Also, the wording of these options is highly technical and not very meaningful to someone who just wants the latest driver. I would be better to have just 2 options, with labels more meaningful to the end user like: * Latest official Nvidia driver (proprietary) * Latest Nouveau driver (open source) ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 18.04 Package: software-properties-gtk 0.96.24.32.9 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 4.15.0-55.60-generic 4.15.18 Uname: Linux 4.15.0-55-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.20.9-0ubuntu7.7 Architecture: amd64 CurrentDesktop: XFCE Date: Sun Aug 11 13:32:43 2019 InstallationDate: Installed on 2016-11-11 (1002 days ago) InstallationMedia: Xubuntu 16.04.1 LTS "Xenial Xerus" - Release amd64 (20160719) PackageArchitecture: all SourcePackage: software-properties UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to bionic on 2018-08-24 (351 days ago) ** Affects: software-properties (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug bionic ** Attachment added: "nvidia.png" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1839756/+attachment/5281973/+files/nvidia.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1839756 Title: Nvidia driver options are not easy to understand To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-properties/+bug/1839756/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1707370] [NEW] Software boutique icons are confusing
Public bug reported: When the software boutique first loads, I'm presented with some introductory text, and a 4x4 grid of application icons to the left, most of which I don't recognise. Some if the icons are faded out, but the 2x2 grid in the middle are more opaque, drawing my attention to them. As I move my cursor over, the icons fade to full opacity, and seem to be inviting me to click on them to find out what secrets they hide. However, clicking them doesn't do anything and I'm left puzzled as to what the icons represent, and why my attention is being drawn more to some of them than others. [Bug 730279] Re: Searching in Unity’s Dash, File Places and Application Places made simple for single results
I think the problem is slightly broader than the description. Currently, when performing a search that only returns one result, a minimum of 2 keystrokes are required to select that result (Down, Down or Tab, Down), plus an additional keystroke to activate it. Similarly, if results are returned from multiple scopes but a scope only has a single result, the scope must be selected first before the result can be selected and activated. In general, having to navigate through the headings of each scope is a bit confusing when there is only 1 row of results within the scope since activating the heading doesn't do anything, yet it is still necessary to go through it to reach the results in that scope. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/730279 Title: Searching in Unity’s Dash, File Places and Application Places made simple for single results To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/730279/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 793315] [NEW] incorrect flash version installed
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: flashplugin-installer I am running a new install of Natty Narwhal. When I booted from the install disk, it offered to install over Lucid Lynx, without reformatting. I chose that option. When I go to http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about, it reports that I am running version10,1,85,3 of the flash player. Here is the output of $ dpkg -l | grep flash ii flashplugin-installer 10.3.181.14ubuntu0.11.04.1 Adobe Flash Player plugin installer Therefore, the version reported by the Adobe website is certainly unexpected. [Bug 792150] Re: software center crashes on resize
Yes, it is happening every time I try to vertically resize the Software Center. It does restart normally afterwards. I've attached the output from starting software center in a terminal. While doing this, I noticed that the terminal would crash when resized vertically too. Also, so did my battery monitor (launched from the battery icon on the panel). This crash happens almost every time. Also, the programs were not crashing when resized on the external monitor. They only crashed on the built-in monitor. I will attach a diagram showing the layout of the monitors. ** Attachment added: terminal output from software-center https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-center/+bug/792150/+attachment/2154290/+files/software-center.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/792150 Title: software center crashes on resize -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 792164] [NEW] Mouse can enter no go area of dual monitor setup
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus I will attach a diagram of my monitor layout. The builtin monitor is set to 1024x768. The external monitor is set to 1920x1080 and is positioned above the built-in. The right hand edge of the two monitors line up. This leaves a rectangular no go area on the lower left, where the mouse cursor should be unable to go. However, it can enter this area. The Launcher appears on the built-in monitor. However, it does not appear when the mouse cursor reaches the left hand edge of the monitor. One must continue moving the mouse cursor, through the no go area to reach the left edge of the no go area before the Launcher appears. Then, one must move the mouse cursor back to the right until it reappears on the built-in monitor and then get it back into the Launcher before that disappears. What I expect should happen is that the Launcher should appear when the mouse cursor reaches the left edge of the built-in monitor. With the mouse cursor in the external monitor, the Launcher appears when the cursor reaches the left hand edge of the external monitor. This is reasonable. This edge is also lined up with the left edge of the no go area. Another expectation I have that is not honored in this scenario is that the mouse acts as though it enters this no go area. See above about having to move the mouse further left after it disappears off the left edge of the built-in before the Launcher appears. Another example is that the mouse can be moved off the bottom edge of the external monitor into the no go area. One must then move the mouse significantly to the right before it appears in the built-in monitor. [Bug 723831] Re: Installer – The option to 'install third-party software' when installing Ubuntu should be selected by default (aka make Youtube work)
Paul referred to the Ubuntu UK Podcast discussion, in which I mentioned I didn't think this was a good idea. I'd like to expand a bit more on why, speaking as an end-user who uses Ubuntu because it's free software. Benjamin pointed out, as we did on the show, that some of the packages in question are free but may have patent issues in some countries. I agree that it's OK to have these enabled by default, as long at we're not putting end-users in a legally-dubious situation by doing so. As I live in the UK, this doesn't bother me, but in a country such as the USA where software patents are more of a big deal, this worries me a bit. However, this is clearly an issue for the legal team. On Ubuntu.com, there is a paragraph summarising what Ubuntu is. The paragraph ends, Ubuntu is, and always will be, absolutely free. This change will undermine this clear statement of principle. We all know that the word free is loaded in this context, so the choice to use it there was clearly considered. It doesn't matter whether removal of non- free components is unticking a box, or an apt-get remove command - the choice to install them by default means that Ubuntu is no longer absolutely free, which could affect the distro's credibility within the free software community. These are the people tell their friends and family about Linux, and install Linux on their machines. Losing their support isn't ideal. The description of this bug report makes it clear that a primary reason for the change is Usability. For example people expect YouTube to just work. If YouTube doesn't work they will say, I tried this new computer, it looked quite nice but when I went to YouTube it didn't work so I want back to using my Mac/PC. This may well be true. However, if there's going to be a major policy change in the name of usability, I'd like to see some evidence that this is the case. As a developer, I know how easy it is to say users will probably think this, so I'll do this without ever researching what users actually think and do. I suspect that the majority of people who install Ubuntu will understand what the checkbox means, and will tick it if necessary. The reason I say that is that I think users who don't understand or notice the checkbox won't be installing Ubuntu themselves anyway - someone who does (techie friend/professional or OEM) will be doing it for them, and can check it if it's required. Again I may well be wrong, but without properly researching it we'll never know. My final concern is that a change like this opens the flood gates. If we've agreed that it's acceptable to include non-free software by default, where do we draw the line? Drivers? Codecs? Browser Plugins? Applications? What if a partner company wants to pay Canonical to include its proprietary software in Ubuntu by default? Any decision in this area will need a clear process for justification of packages installed through this option, otherwise we risk making a default Ubuntu install look like an OEM Windows install. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/723831 Title: Installer – The option to 'install third-party software' when installing Ubuntu should be selected by default (aka make Youtube work) -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 670448] [NEW] Include choqok as the default Microblogging client
Public bug reported: Choqok[1] is a great Twitter/Identi.ca client for KDE with a similar feature set to Gwibber. The current default Microblogging offering from Kubuntu appears to be limited to KDE's Microblogging plasmoid, which while attractive, lacks some of the functionality that one might expect. I think that the Kubuntu community should consider including the Choqok application by default, giving us similar microblogging capabilities to the Ubuntu desktop. [Bug 659819] [NEW] Use colibri for notifications

[Bug 501074] Re: No login screen after logout
I have upgraded my entire network to Lucid Lynx - server and desktops. I have not had this recur in such a disastrous way - being unable to login via gdm at all, until a complete reformat and re-install. This may be related, or may be a new problem. I'm not sure, but it appears to be sufficiently related to add here. I do note that startkde can be installed without having enough of the KDE desktop installed for a user with KDE preference to succeed at logging in. I will attach the output of dpkg -l for your reference. My desktop does not have KDE installed, but some package that was added via dependencies contained the file startkde. This allows the option of logging in to KDE to appear when a user is selected. However, that login fails because not enough of KDE is installed to succeed. I have managed a workaround: # cd /usr/bin # chmod -x *startkde* KDE no longer appears in the list of session options. ** Attachment added: output of dpkg -l | gzip -9 http://launchpadlibrarian.net/51313384/dpkg.out.gz -- No login screen after logout https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/501074 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

An additional workaround to this problem is to run killall kwalletd, then close the programs requiring the password (e.g. NetworkManager) and restart them. Kwallet will then restart and allow you to enter the password without you having to log out. -- plasma-widget-network-manager + kwallet timeout https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/392005 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to plasma-widget-networkmanagement in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

[Bug 501074] [NEW] No login screen after logout
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gdm Recent installation of Ubuntu 9.10. KDE is NOT installed. All available updates were updated. -System is enabled as a NIS client. NIS server is Slackware 12.1. -I had to change the UID of the first user created as it clashed with an existing network user. -successfully used the system for a few days with 2 different network user accounts. Local user also worked. These users had gnome as the preferred desktop. Preferences etc had been set by Gnome version 2.22 (Gnome SlackBuild). -logged in last night as a network user that had KDE as the preferred desktop. KDE version was 3.5.9 (from Slackware 12.1). Upon logout, the login screen did not reappear. Instead there was a black square in the middle of the screen. There is a circular accessibility icon on the bottom in the right half of the screen. It is the only thing that responds to mouse clicks. It brings up a dialog with some accessibility options. Rebooting did not help. I did an apt-get purge gdm, which also removed 4 dependencies. All five were then reinstalled. The problem still occurs. I can login via: alt-ctrl-F1 -login as local user (or as network user that was added to sudoers). $ sudo stop gdm $ startx gdm version is 2.28.1-0ubuntu2.1 ProblemType: Package AptOrdering: ubuntu-desktop: Purge indicator-applet-session: Purge indicator-session: Purge gdm-guest-session: Purge gdm: Purge Architecture: i386 Date: Mon Dec 28 07:10:04 2009 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.10 ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 1 InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala - Release i386 (20091028.5) Package: gdm 2.28.1-0ubuntu2.1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.31-16.53-generic SourcePackage: gdm Title: package gdm 2.28.1-0ubuntu2.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 1 Uname: Linux 2.6.31-16-generic i686 ** Affects: gdm (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apport-package i386 -- No login screen after logout https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/501074 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 392005] Re: plasma-widget-network-manager + kwallet timeout
I think this problem is actually Kwallet, not plasma-widget-network- manager. I don't use NetworkManager at all, but use Kwallet to store my passwords for Kopete, Kmail etc. and experience the same timeout if I don't unlock my wallet immediately after login, and can only use the applications by logging out and in again. -- plasma-widget-network-manager + kwallet timeout https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/392005 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 408530] Re: empathy assertion failure: empathy:ERROR:empathy-tp-chat.c:1391:empathy_tp_chat_acknowledge_message: assertion failed: (m != NULL)
I saw a new message from a friend who did not have an open chat window with me currently. Saw his message first in a Dark Grey window. Clicked on the envelope, selected his name and his chat popped open in another tab of my chat window. Had two previous chats with others open, his was the third. Of the first two one was a chatroom and the second was another one to one chat. Upon sending the second chat to him empathy crashed. Restart indicated the chat had been sent. Display repeated the message, and glad it did not get lost during the event. :-) -- empathy assertion failure: empathy:ERROR:empathy-tp-chat.c:1391:empathy_tp_chat_acknowledge_message: assertion failed: (m != NULL) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/408530 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
