[Bug 1295458] Re: Can't upgrade from 13.04

2014-03-21 Thread mobrien118
I did not have that ppa enabled (and haven't since a prior version of
Ubuntu) but I went ahead and re-added it wiat apt-add-repository and
then used ppa-purge to remove it again. Then i tried to process the
upgrade again and it still failed with the same error. I'm sorry, I am
pretty handy with Linux, but I don't know how to troubleshoot this
issue.

2014-03-21 Thread mobrien118
Following along the same logic, I id the same for
ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates, which actually DID have some packages installed
already. Same result, though.

Is the best thing to just keep going through PPAs and purging them? I
don't have too many, but some of them shouldn't conflict with official
packages (like cran). I wish it would say *what* the actual package
issue was.

[Bug 1295458] Re: Can't upgrade from 13.04

2014-03-21 Thread mobrien118
Never mind. Looked at the apt.log, which was filled with garbage, and
realized it was some old packages that were the same version as the
Ubuntu ones only with git[some other stuff] as the version. Tracked
them all down in Synaptic and forced the official versions (a
downgrade).

Ran d-release-upgrade and now it's working.

It really shouldn't be this hard. I think an average user shouldn't have
to deal with this, but I guess an average user wouldn't be using xorg
PPAs in the first place, so whatever.

The good news is that it's working.

[Bug 1295458] Re: Can't upgrade from 13.04

2014-03-20 Thread mobrien118
The exact error, which I'm sure you guessed, is:
Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the
command 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal.

[Bug 858775] Re: gnome-keyring-daemon hogs CPU in Oneiric

2012-05-24 Thread mobrien118
This happens to me when I load Google-Chrome. Once it loads, it asks me
for my password to unlock the keyring, the it's off to the races!

It doesn't seem to ever stop using 100% CPU (on my 3.4GHz Pentium D).

If I kill it, everything seems fine.

I have a fully updated Precise installation.

Is this the same issue? Has anyone found a workaround? Solution? Is
there anything I can do to help?

[Bug 218308] Re: Rdesktop cousing system freeze when using Cisco VPN client

2011-06-10 Thread mobrien118
Crispy:

Are you saying that with this option ENABLED you are no longer having
issues?

I ask because I have had it enabled and disabled alike and, although the
lockups may be less frequent, they are still occurring for me, even with
it on.

Thanks for posting. I was very hopeful for a second that we had a
solution...

It seems, from this thread, that there are lots of things that work for
*some* people, consistently, but nothing that works for me yet. I'm sure
that the solution is something involving the least common denominator
of all of these. Something network related.

I'm definitely not a network guru, so I don't have a lot to offer toward
a solution, but if I see a possible solution posted here, I'm bound to
try it.

Cheers,

[Bug 778009] Re: Upgrade to Natty fails due to Python package error

2011-05-26 Thread mobrien118
Sorry, I should have requested that this bug be closed.

I used dpkg to remove and purge the python package, then apt-get
installed ubuntu-desktop which, aside from losing a very few custom
settings, worked perfectly.

I don't know if that indicates a package corrupted during download, or
if, by doing that, I round-about accomplished the same solution you
mention in your comment.

Either way, since I had to get my production server back up and running,
I had to fix it, and there's no way for me to go back and debug now.

Thanks for your help.

[Bug 752701] [NEW] ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx does not exist

2011-04-06 Thread mobrien118
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-virtual

I have a *relatively* unaltered install of Ubuntu Desktop running in
VirtualBox 4.0.4 and I recently upgraded from a working Maverick to a
working Natty beta1.

I decided to try the linux-image-virtual kernel, so I installed it,
along with the appropriate headers.

I proceeded to reboot, hoping to try the new kernel, when I was
surprised by this error message and dropped to an initramfs prompt.
(Error: in title, but with my real UUID, i checked that it is the
correct one)

Choosing one of the existing linux-image standard kernels still works,
and I even dist-upgraded from .7 to .8 on both the standard and virtual
kernels, and still the standard works but the virtual doesn't.

Sorry I'm not more help in digging deeper into this, but I'm willing to
help get it sorted out. Let me know what additional information I can
provide that would be helpful.

Thanks!

MBR on it (because I treat the raw array as a raw drive for a VirtualBox
VM I'm running on the machine).

In the next version of Ubuntu immediately following this one, HAL was
able to deal with this scenario and everything was fine. It even shows
up in Disk Manager as a partition with an MBR on it. Very slick.

[Bug 405533] Re: HAL Fails: (EE) config/hal: couldn't initialise context: (null) ((null))

2010-10-17 Thread mobrien118
Actually, this might have been another bug (I have quite a few Ubuntu
systems that I like to mess around with) Either way, they're all working
now. Sorry for not keeping on top of the bug report, and thanks for
asking about it.

Cheers!

[Bug 571564] [NEW] 50patchtemplatefordebian hangs forever

2010-04-29 Thread mobrien118
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bugzilla3

When I try to install bugzilla3 (3.2.5.1-2) it makes it to the step
run-parts: executing /etc/bugzilla3/pre-
checksetup.d/50patchtemplatefordebian and then hangs indefinitely.

There is a process running called /bin/sh
/usr/share/bugzilla3/lib/checksetup.pl
/etc/bugzilla3/answerfile.sxjgK74J2t --verbose which keeps spawning the
process perl /usr/share/bugzilla3/lib/checksetup_nondebian.pl
/etc/bugzilla3/answerfile.sxjgK74J2t --verbose which does and then does
it again.

Any help with this issue would be apreciated. I will provide further
information if needed.

[Bug 453444] Re: /var/log fills up with all normal messages @ about 575/sec fill up the available space

2009-11-10 Thread mobrien118
I was getting these messages filling up my root hard drive very quickly.

I discovered that my heat sink was all clogged up with dust and cleaning
it fixed the errors, but it shouldn't be doing this anyway. Eventually
my heat sink is going to get gunked up again and the only way I'm going
to know is when my computer crashes and I take time to dig into the
error logs and find that my HD is full of this crap again.

Another issue is on 3 out of 5 computers I use don't update the CPU
temperature in sensors anyway. 2 of them say that it is 40C all the
time, and another stays at 20C. At first, I thought that this may be a
fault in the motherboard as the 2 that stay at 40C are both cheap ECS
mobos, from relatively the same time period, about 2-3 years ago, but
one is an INTEL and the other AMD. The one that's stuck on 20C is
another manufacturer, but even older.

BUT, since the lernel seemed to know that the chip was overheating, I
guess it DID know what the temp was. I wonder if there is some
connection between all of these happenings.

Good luck!

[Bug 456040] Re: zope2.11-sandbox is uninstallable due to version dependency on zope-common

[Bug 456040] Re: zope2.11-sandbox is uninstallable due to version dependency on zope-common

2009-11-09 Thread mobrien118
I changed the affected package to zope2.10 since it is likely to gain
more exposure (maybe?) and it is more relevant since it is the default
zope in karmic.

This seems like a no brainer. The maintainer for zope needs to update
the version of zope-common in the repos or change the dependency.

Thanks!

[Bug 178038] Re: npviewer.bin crashed with SIGSEGV

2009-11-01 Thread mobrien118
I had this bug, but downloaded the *BETA* 64bit Flash Player for Linux
and replaced the link to the 32bit wrapped one in Mozilla's plugin
directory, and now the error is gone. I *didn't* remove the flash player
package, though.

I wonder why Ubuntu didn't use the 64bit flash plugin for this release.
It seems more stable than the hack they use to wrap the 32bit plugin, if
I may say so.

Just my thoughts, hope this helps!

[Bug 447320] [NEW] kernel 2.6.31-12-generic renders Error 13: Invalid or unsupported executable format

2009-10-09 Thread mobrien118
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub

I'm not sure if this is a grub error, kernel error or ext4 error.

I recently ran apt-get upgrade on karmic and ended up with the grub
error Error 13: Invalid or unsupported executable format after
installing kernel 2.6.31-12-generic. If I select 2.6.31-11-generic (the
previous kernel) it works without a problem.

Right before I ran this upgrade, I upgraded the hard disk to ext4 using
the procedure linked to from the Karmic beta information page. The
system was a fully patched (up to 10/7/09 package lists) system.

So, to reproduce, one should be able to:

1. Change /etc/fstab to ext4 for main HD.
2. Use tune2fs (not sure correct command name) to upgrade the FS to ext4 and
use fsck to repair it.
3. Install 2.6.31-12-generic kernel packages.
4. Try to boot into 2.6.31-12-generic kernel.

Also, I installed grub2 in chain-loading mode. The same error results
when GRUB2 is used to boot the same kernel, as well as using GRUB1.5 to
select the kernel.

Hope this information helps squash this bug!

error: dbus_bus_get: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.FileNotFound: Failed to

OK, but this is expected, I believe, because I am running in Drop to

When I try to start normally, I can't interact with the system via
Keyboard, Mouse or Network, so there would be no way, that i know of,

Can youthink of any other way for me to get the requisite information?

Yeah, that'show I logged in when I got this error from a root shell
with networking.

But when I boot normally, there is no network, so SSH doesn't work. I
can't even ping the machine. The desktop appears normally, but with
the Failed to load HAL (I think, not sure of the phrasing) error
message.

Is there anything in any log file that could help?

[Bug 405533] [NEW] HAL Fails: (EE) config/hal: couldn't initialise context: (null) ((null))

2009-07-27 Thread mobrien118
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I ran a set of updates a few weeks ago that caused my (remote) ubuntu
Jaunty system to not boot up.

It was installed off of the alternate CD, with md (RAID) devices
enabled. I have had a number of problems with it, getting it
oing, initially, and then with HAL failing because it couldn't assemble
the RAID devices. More information on that issue can be found in the
bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hal/+bug/361689.

Well, Now I am getting a HAL failure message on the GUI once Ubuntu
boots, but there is no Keyboard/Mouse/Network, so there is no way for me
to interact with the system. The only thing I can do is drop to a root
shell w/networking at boot.

To further complicate the diagnosis, I only have remote access to this
machine, so my ability to reboot it is limited to when I can have
someone do it for me, drop to a root shell, and then start SSHd.

The error in the Xorg log says:

(EE) config/hal: couldn't initialise context: (null) ((null))

P.S. I also have a warning in Xorg that says:

(WW) The directory /usr/share/fonts/X11/cyrillic does not exist.

Please let me know if I can provide any more information to help
diagnose this bug.

Thanks!

[Bug 361689] Re: hald crashed with SIGSEGV in hotplug_event_begin_add_blockdev when assembling mdraid devices

2009-07-07 Thread mobrien118
Ahhh! Is this bug back?

The server I was having a problem with is 1000 miles away from me now
and I rebooted it and it didn't come back up. Thinking back a few hours,
I remember that update-manager installed a HAL update.

N! I need my server and this is going to force me into weeks
of downtime! How is this not a Critical bug, and how did this update
cause a regression?

This is absolutely horrible. The first time I experienced this bug, it
cost me hours/possibly days of troubleshooting, now I have indefinite
unscheduled downtime. Seriously CRITICAL!

Anyone have any suggestions?

[Bug 361689] Re: hald crashed with SIGSEGV in hotplug_event_begin_add_blockdev when assembling mdraid devices

2009-07-07 Thread mobrien118
Didn't mean to sound upset at anyone in my previous post. I know that
Chris did an awesome job with the first patch. I'm just upset and
looking for a support group :-)

The sooner we can get a permanent fix for this issue, the sooner I can
get a good night's sleep.

Please, anyone who is capable, help out with this!

Also, can we change the status back to confirmed or incomplete so it
will bubble back up and get noticed?

[Bug 202952] Re: Add native ZFS to Ubuntu

2009-05-07 Thread mobrien118
I got a taste of ZFS with Solaris and PC-BSD, and I must say, I can't
get that taste out of my mouth!

While I found PC-BSD, as a whole, to be relatively immature as a usable
desktop OS (a great effort, though, not quite there yet), and
OpenSolaris to be the same, only with surprising less ZFS capability
using the native installer, the BEST thing about using both of these
OSes was getting to try out ZFS. It is AWESOME! But, I guess htat's why
this bug exists.

So, I guess there are a few options, all of which will take a lot of
time and effort.

1. Somehow make GPL and CDDL work together (not likely).

2. Create your own implementation of ZFS written under the GPLvX...This
may have legal ramifications of its own, since maybe this would violate
patents in the ZFS specification?

3. Create a similar, competing FS that can do all, most, or more of the
COOL things ZFS can, but designed and created under a GPL friendly
license.

From what I remember, there are some file systems currently in
development or some level of release that have goals similar to ZFS, but
without corporate support (like Sun backing ZFS). I doubt they will ever
be ready before something better exists (maybe options 1 or 2). I could
be wrong, though.

So, it looks like a pretty not so good for this happening, but I
support this bug(/feature) request, and I admire its similarity to bug
#1 (If you don't know what that is, please look it up!)

Also, what about the license compatibility of having NTFS drivers
running on the linux kernel? Surely, if that can be accomplished, they
can make a driver fore ZFS. And the point about NVidia drivers, surely
their license is more restrictive than the CDDL.

Just my thoughts in support of solving this bug ;-)

Cheers,

[Bug 361689] Re: hald segfault when using a raid volume

2009-05-06 Thread mobrien118
I think I can get you started.

I mean, the first step to creating a RAID volume is to think it out.
Where do you need redundancy? Where do you need speed? Then map out your
partitions (especially if you have different sized disks).

Remember that RAID will cause a slight (in the case of RAID0 or RAID1)
to slightly greater (RAID5 or RAID6) processor and I/O load. That is the
trade-off for getting better overall disk performance.

Although it is supposedly not needed to RAID0 your swap partitions
across disks (supposedly the swap daemon manages multiple disks very
well) it doesn't hurt to do so and is an easy and safe way to get
started with RAID. You might consider making this your test case.

This page lays out mdadm and Linux RAID pretty well:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=408461

Basically:
1. format disks you want to use as RAID partitions
2. create a RAID array using mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=[level]
--raid-devices=[number of devices] [device1] [device2]...[deviceN]
3. assemble the array
4. format the array in the filesystem of your choice (like any other partition)
5. mount it like you would any other disk partition

Pretty simple, eh?

[Bug 361689] Re: hald segfault when using a raid volume

2009-05-05 Thread mobrien118
How is it possible that this bug is only listed as Medium
importance?!?!?

I discovered what I think is this bug when I upgraded my system using
system update. Upon a later reboot I found that I had no access to the
system whatsoever. After trying multiple things to get back in from the
root recovery console, I re-formatted, losing a lot of configuration.

Fortunately, I am somewhat tech savvy and I didn't lose everything, but
this cost me 2 days and will probably cost more. And for the average
user, this could equate to complete data loss. I would think this would
be a high importance bug since it disables a working system!

Does anyone agree with me, or am I missing something here?

FYI, it looks like Chris's PPA packages fixed it, though.

Thank goodness! If I had been remote from this machine (which I will be
for the next few months) it would have been a nightmare!

[Bug 353117] Re: package ubuntu-docs 9.04.6 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 2

2009-04-01 Thread mobrien118
I see that the status is changed to Fix Released but I am not getting
it from the repos.

This is probably due to my ignorance on the meanings of the status
choices, but I would assume that Released means that it is in the
repos, while Fix Committed would mean that it is ready to be added and
will be included in a batch update or something. Sorry if this isn't the
place to ask such questions, but I couldn't (easily) find
information/definitions of the status choices.

I guess the question I should be asking is: When will the status be (I
know it's not an option) Fix Available?

[Bug 324941] [NEW] package linux-image-2.6.27-11-generic 2.6.27-11.27 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

Public bug reported:

When I asked to use a shell session to evaluate the situation, it soft
froze. Finally the shell appeared. I exited the shell and the window
that spawned it had frozen. After about 10 minutes, I forced it to
close, then the terminal portion of the update manager gave me a
prompt! I typed exit into it and the installation of the other
packages completed normally. Then I think it can the configure routine
for the kernel packages and dependency descendants again. This time I
started my own shell session.
