I just found out that this is triggered through toggling guake (a terminal window, an oneiric package). [Bug 811355] Re: Oneiric won't start x on boot up
Exactly same problem, same HW (AMD64, Phenom CPU, Radeon HD*). sudo apt-get install gnome-shell seemed to resolve this bug, but only was the tip of the iceberg of getting back to normal ubuntu life. People likely will be directed/googled here, I just want to show what did not bring things back to normal desktop life. Each time follwed by a reboot: - replace lightdm with gdm - reinstall fglrx See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1805081&page=4 - reinstall openbox - cp /usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/gdm.session ~/.xinitrc A bit more background story: 1) Before upgrade, I had openbox as my default screen manager. 2) After upgrade, I was greeted with lightdm (selected at upgrade). 3) After selecting openbox at lightdm (or actually whatever), I logged into something black with a X mouse cursor. No menu etc. As the original description: was a themeless error msg stating no Gnome. 4) I went to tty1 and killed X. 5) sudo apt-get remove lighdm 6) sudo apt-get --reinstall install gdm 7) startx in tty does do anything 8) Found http://askubuntu.com/questions/41809/how-to-start-x-from-command-line figured that ~/.xinitrc was missing. 9) cp /usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/gdm.session ~/.xinitrc 10) sudo reboot now 11) boot continues in ansi term style until "Battery check.." and then you are asked for username and pw to log into that tty. No gdm etc. 12) Logged in 13) startx and gdm is visible 14) Select "Ubuntu" this time and end up something unity'ish. Notably the graphics driver has serious problems, as everything is ill painter with black squares. 15) sudo apt-get --reinstall fglrx 16) sudo service gdm start Brings me to gdm on tty7. 17) Loggin into "Gnome" now triggers some 30+ "error report" dialogs for crashed processes. Many of themare metacity, gnome-volume-manger, gnome-settings-daemon etc. I select report and restart the proc. My suspects: 1) Radeon Driver is somehow ill. 2) Unity/Gnome shell rely on some packages which were not present in my 11.04 environment (I deinstalled Unity because of headache there already). [Bug 64342] Re: Stops booting with "Error 18: selected cylinder exeeds maximum support by BIOS"
Agreed to Colin Watsan + SOLVED. DIAGNOSIS: selecting an older kernel was indeed working - but only every now and then. Tip: A "Starting ..." will appear when the boot will work and a void disc with a simple cursor "_" on the screen when fails. SOLUTION (linux way): - Upgraded BIOS of my Gigabyte board. Was: GA-MA786M-S2H F3 (Version was F3), downloaded from gigabyte version F10 and used the Q-FLASH tool (BIOS menu: F8). This can be done from DOS with the bios exe. HOWTO without DOS: NOTE that the Q-FLASH Bios tool option will requiere the extracted bios file on the first boot medium. Use a USB stick. TIP1: If you do not have a bootable floppy, as me, use a bootable USB Stick. One way to make one bootable: use the ubuntu "System/Administrator/USB Startup Disk Creator" tool to extract the ubuntu*.iso on it. This creates a liveUSB drive which is bootable. TIP2: Gigabyte has only .exe files as a download option. These are self- extracting windows executables. To extract the file use a windows machine and run it to extract it (should work with wine too). Extract them on the USB stick (or simpler a bootable floppy) and go on with the Q-FLASH option of the BIOS. TIP3: In the BIOS Setting place the "USB-FDD" as the first boot device. Also in the boot hdd priority. TIP4: Use "Del" to enter the BIOS menu. It is the "Entf" key for germans. -- Stops booting with "Error 18: selected cylinder exeeds maximum support by BIOS" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/64342 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 425927] [NEW] wmaker not detecting usb hard drive after boot
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: wmaker My usb hard drive is detected after boot and is fine in gnome. But when seleting wmaker as my window manager, it is not available after booting.
