[Bug 835308] Re: openbox does not load selected wallpaper on startup

2012-06-14 Thread muenalan
Isnt there a more (light|g)dm 'ish way to do it ? I rather tend to use
gnome and openbox on and off.

Any way to use gconf to query the current desktop and set that through
nitrogen ? Or should we put a feature request to nitrogen to have an
option to use the gnome settings ?

[Bug 835349] Re: window shadows left on wallpaper even window moved

2011-08-30 Thread muenalan
Why I use xcompmgr ?

I have/use:
openbox
cairo-dock ! Its not decent without compositing. Unhappy with Awant performance.

Problem:
Metacity, compiz crash with openbox. That left me the option of xcompmgr what
actually does well, except this small bug.

How I run xcompmgr:

xcompmgr -cF -t-9 -l-11 -r9 -o.95 -D6

which activates shadows beneath windows. And that bug described above is
my only small problem recently.

[Bug 835349] Re: window shadows left on wallpaper even window moved

2011-08-27 Thread muenalan
I just found out that this is triggered through toggling guake (a terminal
window, an oneiric package).
It appears and disappears on F12 and obviously the desktop is repainted when
the window appears, but not when it disappears.

It does not appear when minimizing a window like nautilus. So it seems
to be more specific to guake-like disappearing windows.

redrawing of the windows desktop is not always "clean". Afterimages of

dragging a new window over the afterimage, they disappear and the

[Bug 835331] [NEW] context unchecked "Showmenu Menubar" but Menubar visible on startup

2011-08-27 Thread muenalan
Public bug reported:

Then selecting/Checking "Show MenuBar", does nothing (its shown already).
Then again, it really hides (as should be in the beginning) and the menu point
is unchecked.

Seems as if the menubar visibility is bound to the manual menu selection
(instead of reading from settings) ?

[Bug 820217] [NEW] selected openbox for login, but does open ubuntu-one or metacity with crashes

2011-08-03 Thread muenalan
Public bug reported:

After update oneiric myriad of apport assisted crashes at login. These
include metacity and ubuntu-one, even so they are not supposed to load
at all.

Before update from 11.04, I had openbox running well. Within it I called
many gnome-* tools without problem and had a slim and speedy
environment.

Somehow gdm does not honor openbox properly and loads other conflicting
window managers.

[Bug 819270] [NEW] QML Library Items Empty

2011-08-01 Thread muenalan
Public bug reported:

When editing qml files in "Design" mode, the Library->Items window is no
populated.

See http://lists.qt.nokia.com/pipermail/qt-
creator/2010-November/008158.html

> I can now
> see the QML files visually and move items around but I cannot see any
> of the standard components under the Library->Items window (Rectangle,
> Text, etc..). Is there something I am missing in order to enable
> these?

With following reply:

>The item library is populated by its own plugin called qtquickplugin for
>the standard Qt Quick items. The plugin is located in
>src/plugins/qmldesigner/qtquickplugin.
>Please check if the plugin is correctly build and deployed in
>lib/qmldesigner/.

When looking for qtquickplugin, I dont see it there.

$ dpkg -L qtcreator | grep plugin | grep Qml | grep ".so"
/usr/lib/qtcreator/plugins/Nokia/libQmlDesigner.so
/usr/lib/qtcreator/plugins/Nokia/libQmlJSEditor.so
/usr/lib/qtcreator/plugins/Nokia/libQmlJSInspector.so
/usr/lib/qtcreator/plugins/Nokia/libQmlJSTools.so
/usr/lib/qtcreator/plugins/Nokia/libQmlProjectManager.so

Any ideas how to get that plugin ?

[Bug 811355] Re: Oneiric won't start x on boot up

2011-08-01 Thread muenalan
Exactly same problem, same HW (AMD64, Phenom CPU, Radeon HD*).

 sudo apt-get install gnome-shell

seemed to resolve this bug, but only was the tip of the iceberg of
getting back to normal ubuntu life.

People likely will be directed/googled here, I just want to show what
did not bring things back to normal desktop life. Each time follwed by a
reboot:

 - replace lightdm with gdm
 - reinstall fglrx
   See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1805081&page=4
 - reinstall openbox
 - cp /usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/gdm.session ~/.xinitrc

A bit more background story:

1) Before upgrade, I had openbox as my default screen manager.
2) After upgrade, I was greeted with lightdm (selected at upgrade).
3) After selecting openbox at lightdm (or actually whatever), I logged into
something black with a X mouse cursor. No menu etc. As the original
description: was a themeless error msg stating no Gnome.
4) I went to tty1 and killed X.
5) sudo apt-get remove lighdm
6) sudo apt-get --reinstall install gdm
7) startx in tty does do anything
8) Found

  http://askubuntu.com/questions/41809/how-to-start-x-from-command-line

  figured that ~/.xinitrc was missing.
9) cp /usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/gdm.session ~/.xinitrc
10) sudo reboot now
11) boot continues in ansi term style until "Battery check.." and then you are
asked for username and pw to log into that tty. No gdm etc.
12) Logged in
13) startx and gdm is visible
14) Select "Ubuntu" this time and end up something unity'ish.
Notably the graphics driver has serious problems, as everything is ill
painter with black squares.
15) sudo apt-get --reinstall fglrx
16) sudo service gdm start
Brings me to gdm on tty7.
17) Loggin into "Gnome" now triggers some 30+ "error report" dialogs for
crashed processes. Many of themare metacity, gnome-volume-manger,
gnome-settings-daemon etc. I select report and restart the proc.

My suspects:
 1) Radeon Driver is somehow ill.
 2) Unity/Gnome shell rely on some packages which were not present in my 11.04
environment (I deinstalled Unity because of headache there already).

Currently still no usefull desktop.

Confirmed.

Was just confused with the many mouse entries in the xinfo list. For me
entry 13 on my sony vaio laptop solved it. Notably, I have a usb mouse
and a builtin touch pad "mouse". Just in case the bug has something to
do with a possible conflict.

[Bug 674516] Re: "Cannot load library generator_: (libgenerator_.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)"

2010-11-12 Thread muenalan
Solved:

Due to lack of documentation, I invoked the command with the wrong
arguments. It dynamically build *.so filenames dependant ont the
commandline. I figured out that this line does indeed work, as the
dependency then resolves to libgenerator_smoke.so, which is provided by
the dependencies.

smokegen -g smoke -I /usr/include/qt4/Qt -qt -config /usr/share/smokegen
/qt-config.xml -d /usr/share/smokegen/qtdefines -o smokeout

[Bug 64342] Re: Stops booting with "Error 18: selected cylinder exeeds maximum support by BIOS"

2009-09-13 Thread muenalan
Agreed to Colin Watsan + SOLVED.

DIAGNOSIS: selecting an older kernel was indeed working - but only every
now and then. Tip: A "Starting ..." will appear when the boot will work
and a void disc with a simple cursor "_" on the screen when fails.

SOLUTION (linux way):
- Upgraded BIOS of my Gigabyte board. Was: GA-MA786M-S2H F3 (Version was F3),
downloaded from gigabyte version F10 and used the Q-FLASH tool (BIOS menu: F8).
This can be done from DOS with the bios exe.

HOWTO without DOS:
NOTE that the Q-FLASH Bios tool option will requiere the extracted bios file on
the first boot medium. Use a USB stick.

TIP1: If you do not have a bootable floppy, as me, use a bootable USB
Stick. One way to make one bootable: use the ubuntu
"System/Administrator/USB Startup Disk Creator" tool to extract the
ubuntu*.iso on it. This creates a liveUSB drive which is bootable.

TIP2: Gigabyte has only .exe files as a download option. These are self-
extracting windows executables. To extract the file use a windows
machine and run it to extract it (should work with wine too). Extract
them on the USB stick (or simpler a bootable floppy) and go on with the
Q-FLASH option of the BIOS.

TIP3: In the BIOS Setting place the "USB-FDD" as the first boot device.
Also in the boot hdd priority.

TIP4: Use "Del" to enter the BIOS menu. It is the "Entf" key for
germans.

[Bug 425927] [NEW] wmaker not detecting usb hard drive after boot

2009-09-07 Thread muenalan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wmaker

My usb hard drive is detected after boot and is fine in gnome. But when
seleting wmaker as my window manager, it is not available after booting.
Amarok or rhythmbox for example will not find music located on the disk.

TRICK: Once I plug out and in again the drive appears in the gnome-
panel/Place list (still wmaker) and when I open Nautilus once on the
drive it is fully active and I can work with it without problems.

But doing this procedure after each boot is ugly

SUGGESTION: was too stupid to get something after fiddling with pmount.
udev is also up. Actually lsusb lists the drive even so it is not
accessible to other apps.

[Bug 273319] [NEW] .XLR files are not associated with Openoffice.org Spreadsheet, although it supports it (use case: opening email attachments)

2008-09-22 Thread muenalan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

[SOLUTION]
Create a file association between .xlr files and openoffice.org spreadsheet per
default.

Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release:8.04

[BUG/TRIGGER]
What happened: A friend has send my girl friend an email attachment of an excel
sheet which she saved as an .XLR file. When my girl friend tried to open the
attachment with firefox, the file did not open. There was no application
associated with it. It was just put on the desktop and the icon looked blunt;
also double clicking did not help.

I solved it by manually opening Openoffice.org Spreadsheet and located
the file from there, and the .XLR file was opened without any problems.

- What happened: A friend has send my girl friend an email attachment of
- an excel sheet which she saved as an .XLR file. When my girl friend
- tried to opened the attachment with firefox, the file did not open.
- There was no application associated with it. It was just put on the
- desktop and the icon looked blunt; also double clicking did not help.
+ [BUG/TRIGGER]
+ What happened: A friend has send my girl friend an email attachment of an
excel sheet which she saved as an .XLR file. When my girl friend tried to open
the attachment with firefox, the file did not open. There was no application
associated with it. It was just put on the desktop and the icon looked blunt;
also double clicking did not help.

I solved it by manually opening Openoffice.org Spreadsheet and located
the file from there, and the .XLR file was opened without any problems.
-
- Suggestion: Create a file association between .xlr files and
- openoffice.org spreadsheet per default.

--
.XLR files are not associated with Openoffice.org Spreadsheet, although it
supports it (use case: opening email attachments)

[Bug 224985] Re: firefox-3.0, not saving history or bookmarks, the navigations buttons (foward, back, etc) does not work

2008-09-22 Thread muenalan
Dear friends,

faced the same. Obviously, the mozilla gui engine XUL hangs at some
point due to the buggy .sqlite file.

[Bug 272429] [NEW] [BUG: libvtk5-qt4; Hardy Heron] 24: error: QVTKWidget.h: No such file or directory

2008-09-20 Thread muenalan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libvtk5-qt4

after assembling a dialog with designer-qt4 which used the QVTKWidget,
qmake-qt4 failed to compile the file (see email subject)

It seems to be an old known issue on debian (already in 2006), which was
closed:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=384908
vtk 384908 libvtk5-dev: missing QVTKWidget.h header

As i have the libvtk.* files installed having version:
5.0.3-1ubuntu1

The bug-report on debian says to have solved the issue at
Source-Version: 5.0.2-1

Can anybody help me to find a ubuntu package thats based on the fixed
recent debian release ?

Thanks,
Mue

It seems that I did not install an outdaten package ? libvtk5(.*) seem
recent enough:

Description: Visualization Toolkit - A high level 3D visualization library
VTK - the Visualization Toolkit is an object oriented, high level library that
allows one to easily write C++ programs, Tcl, Python and Java scripts that do
3D visualization. This package provides the shared libraries needed to run C++
programs that use VTK. To compile C++ code that uses VTK you have to install
libvtk5-dev.

VTK enables users to concentrate on their work by providing a large number of
excellent and feature packed high level functions that do visualization. The
library needs OpenGL to render the graphics and for Linux machines Mesa is
necessary. The terms/copyright can be read in /usr/share/doc/vtk/README and
README.html. VTK-Linux-HOWTO has information about using vtk, getting
documentataion or help and instructions on building VTK.
