[Bug 564079] Re: Rename tab in guake in Lucid doesn't keep the name

2010-05-07 Thread muszek
Affects me as well. I'm pretty sure I was using 4.1 in Karmic as well
(AFAIR installed a getdeb.net package) and it didn't have this problem.

[Bug 557421] Re: module-udev-detect races with module-default-device-restore

2010-04-17 Thread muszek
Used the same USB Live as before (the same PA packages, haven't upgraded
anything at all). No sound. Created a new user, logged in as him and
the sound worked.

Sorry for not replying sooner, haven't been around much lately.

[Bug 436699] Re: gives too little permissions to extracted files by default

2009-09-28 Thread muszek
I've had some suspicions and tested them on my wive's computer. File
roller gave _correct_ permissions to files. I've had Ubuntu on my lappy
from day one (AFAIR I got it after Feisty came out) and must have messed
something up on the way.

Please feel free to re-assess whether this ticket still deserves dev's
attention.

[Bug 436699] [NEW] file-roller gives too little permissions to extracted files by default

2009-09-25 Thread muszek
Public bug reported:

Package: file-roller (or some lower-level package)

This happens to me _a lot_. I get some archive from the web, extract it
only to find out that file-roller didn't give read (and execute in
case of directories) permision to group and others. Typical
scenario (just happened):

I download some (compressed) javascript library to include it in my app.
I use nautilus to extract its contents. I use the web browser to access
those files and I get a forbidden code (because files are being
accessed by the web server, which is not the owner of those files).

Here's the story of one archive extracted by midnight commander and
nautilus' file-roller:

[Bug 3868] Re: Emptying trash should really empty trash

2008-01-22 Thread muszek
This bug is still here... another example, which is actually quite
common scenario for me.

I create some files and directories, say it's /var/www/cake . Many web
apps require a directory that's writable by a web server. In this case,
it's /var/www/cake/app/tmp . Files created by apache belong to www-data
:www-data . You can move /var/www/cake to trash, but then you can't
erase /var/www/cake/app/tmp from it.

Now... if a user didn't have root privs, then he'd be stuck with a non-
empty trash forever.

[Bug 158343] Re: Screen dims and brightens randomly

2008-01-11 Thread muszek
@Leann Ogasawara
I've just tested Hardy Alpha 3 and the bug still exists, but it happens less
often. I used the live cd for 50 minutes and the spontaneous change in
brightness happened just once (around 48th minute).
Let me say once again what happens on my machine (I've said it somewhere
else...).
 * unwanted changes - brightness _always_ changes to the value of Set
display brightness to: slider in On AC Power tab in gnome-power-preferences.
If current brightness == the value of this slider, then brightness doesn't
change.
 * unwanted changes are triggered by
** opening of gnome-power-preferences (instant change of brightness) - both
gutsy and hardy

The workaround is to use that slider for adjusting the brightness...
I've been doing it ever since gutsy was released and it's not that
annoying.

[Bug 162633] Re: Brightness keeps resetting to max [Gutsy]

2007-11-14 Thread muszek
I've noticed that right after I installed gutsy and kinda know how it
works now.

It doesn't reset to 100%, it resets to the value of set display
brightness to slider in on ac power (even if currently running on
battery!) tab of Power Management Preferences applet. It always happens
after a few minutes from setting it with a Fn+brightness key. One
thing that always trigges this is opening Power Management Preferences
applet.

Workaround is simple: adjust your brightness using this slider and not
the key combo. I started doing that some time ago and it's not that
annoying.

[Bug 134515] Re: Intel 3945ABG has one connection attempt, after that a reload of the ipw3945 module is needed for the interface to work at all. Connections and connecting in itself is unreliable

2007-11-11 Thread muszek
Dell 1720 - a similar or exactly the same problem. I submitted the bug
report almost a month ago - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/linux-source-2.6.22/+bug/154549 .

You guys might consider yourselves lucky - pair these problems with a
router that goes down ever more often and you have a really frustrating
situation - you never know which thing died. It's been 2 months since
I moved to this house and reported the problem to the landlord :/

I'll add just one thing that I noticed lately and might be relevant: my router
likes to die mainly in two usage scenarios: p2p and skype... what is
interesting is that my girlfriend's skype (on Windows) doesn't cause problems.
Lastest stable (I think it's 1.4) on my computer doesn't do any harm either.
Skype beta 2.0.0.13 kills the router every 5-10 minutes. Could it be something
related to Skype using UDP?
P2P case: all torrent clients I've tried (utorrent on girlfriend's windows,
deluge and azureus on my gutsy) manage to kill it. But azureus seems to do it
like a pro - Right after a program starts, when I'm connected to 2 peers (there
aren't many more in the swarm) or... when I stop downloading a torrent (meaning
I disconnect many connections at once).

Anyways, I've seen 3 similar bug reports so far (Andy Leeman's being the
third one), quite a few people confirming and not a single word from
devs :/

Has anyone had any luck with other distros? Preferably apt-based... .

[Bug 154549] Re: wi-fi connection goes down - reboot is required

2007-10-24 Thread muszek
2 days later. It happened a few more times. New observations:
I can observe three different behaviors when the situation occurs:
 * as noted above - I kill start NetworkManager and everything's fine.
Actually it only happened once.
 * more frequent - the whole OS becomes unstable - I can use running programs,
but can't run gnome-terminal. Even sudo doesn't work - I switched to CLI (via
CTRL+ALT+F1). when I use sudo, it just goes to the new line and cursor
blinks... and I can't do anything in that console.
 * also happened a few times - I can kill start NetworkManager and everything
else seems to be fine, except it keeps connecting for ever. I ran sudo
NetworkManager --no-daemon and saved the output (attached to this message).

Also, for the whole day today NM showed only one access point (it always
shows 5-11 different APs).

[Bug 154549] Re: wi-fi connection goes down - reboot is required

2007-10-22 Thread muszek
I've lived a bit longer with this bug. Here's what I've observed.
Most important: I guess it's NetworkManager. It has just happened to me and I
noticed that System Monitor panel applet indicates that 50% CPU is used (I have
Core 2 Duo). Weird thing though: at the same time top showed that
NetworkManager used 100% cpu... (but that's another issue I guess). Anyways, I
killed NM, started it again and networking works... .

This bug happens few times a day (I'd say 3-5x / 24h). I still can't
really tell what behavior causes that.

[Bug 154549] wi-fi connection goes down - reboot is required

2007-10-19 Thread muszek
Public bug reported:

Sometimes (twice in the last 4 hours) wi-fi connection goes down and doesn't
want to reconnect.
When it happens:
 * nm-applet asks me for WPA password and tries to connect for a very long time.
 * nm-applet behaves strangely - I can't select another network.
 * /etc/init.d/networking doesn't help and executes _really_ quickly (0.x
second), producing just one line.
 * when I restart gnome, nm-applet doesn't show wi-fi hotspots at all.
 * reboot helps.
At the same time, my girlfriends windows-based laptop is connected without any
problems.

I can't reproduce the bug.

I don't know what I can do to troubleshoot this - please tell me and I'll do
that next time this thing happens.
I'm using gutsy (fresh install) since this morning on Dell Inspiron 1720. I
think it happened to me on Feisty (running since I got this laptop in mid
August).

Fresh install of Gutsy (I left /home almost intact, but it's not relevant...)

= microphone =
== external ==
works pretty much as expected (after fiddling with settings for a bit - it was
muted and sliders weren't set to be visible)

weird thing though: when I start a skype conversation, the Capture
slider in volume control (ubuntu app, not something in skype) goes down
gradually, but only if I say something to the microphone. It goes down
to around 15-20%. When the conversation is over, it immediately goes
back to 100%. When I start another conversation, it immediately goes
back to 15-20%. This thing doesn't appear to make a microphone any less
loud, though.

external mic didn't work at all in feisty.
== internal ==
doesn't work. I started a conversation with skype test call (user echo123)
and only heard some noise when my message was being played back. I played
around

= headphones =
they work. and finally they mute/unmute internal speakers (I used to do like 3
reboots per day on Feisty).

= internal speakers =
they work as expected. I kinda hoped that Ubuntu would magically improve their
crappy quality, but none such thing happened.

= suspend =
it killed the sound. I killed gnome - sound was fine again.

= hibernate =
sound works as expected. wifi doesn't, but that's another story (haven't
tested that enough).

Well, I don't think I've had a full /home after that incident. If you

make sure everything works... and this bug is marked as being of medium

[Bug 105750] opera has been sluggish for the past ~2 months

2007-04-11 Thread muszek
Public bug reported:

Opera's performance decreased drasticly around 2 months ago. Another user
(Kubuntu) reported very similar problems -
http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=182816
Symptoms:
* frequent CPU usage spikes (100% for... hmmm... 3-10 seconds?). Opera is
responsive, but noticeably slower.
* in general, opera seems to be somewhat slower.
* it takes several seconds to close the program.
* problems occur several minutes of active browsing and are getting worse with
time. Restarting helps.
* I turned off plugins (including flash) and java.
* problems persist in Opera 9.1 and two different 9.2 weekly builds (I'm
currently using 9.2 build 636).
* I upgraded to Feisty yesterday - nothing has changed.

Please see the discussion at the opera forums - the other guy seems
provided some more info. Also, if you feel I can provide more info
(some logs, for example), please tell me how to do it.

[Bug 102159] [need-packaging] kadu

2007-04-02 Thread muszek
Public bug reported:

This is a request to include a package(s) in Universe repository. I'm
reporting this bug as describet @ https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives
/ubuntu-devel/2007-March/023445.html

What is that?
Kadu is an instant messaging client handling Gadu-Gadu (GG) protocol. GG is by
far the most common IM protocol in Poland - virtually everyone uses it. Kadu
is probably the most popular client that runs on Linux. It hasn't been
included in any Debian/Ubuntu repositories before because there were some
licensing problems with its icons set. The new version comes with
penguin-themed emoticons and I guess that compliance with * (Debian? GPL?
whatever it was...) was the main reason. Ever since I started using Ubuntu (2
years ago), there were problems with packages (they were released late,
repositories used to disappear... right now only available packages are for
beta version, even though stable 5.0 came out several months ago).

[Bug 76219] kernel upgrade results in a wrong content of /boot/grub/menu.lst

2006-12-17 Thread muszek
Public bug reported:

Whenever I upgrade a kernel on one of my boxes, file /boot/grub/menu.lst
contains incorrect root entries, which results in machine not being able to
boot by itselt.
Correct line:
root(hd0,0)
Incorrect line:
root(hd2,0)

Workaround is easy (menu.lst needs to be manually edited after kernel
upgrade, I can also edit this thing after an error pops up while machine
boots), although it could be a very serious problem for most people.

Several things I could point up:
 * I'm not 100% sure, but I think the problem started appearing in Breezy (I
started with hoary and never re-installed, it's been dist-upgrade every time a
new version was released).
 * It's a SATA drive. Please tell me if you need specific information (and how
to get it, I'm not able to do it myself without asking/searching for it).
 * This particular combination of mobo and hdd causes hdd to perform poorly in
some aspects (much slower than IDE drives that I have).

[Bug 62638] /home full - can't log in to gnome

2006-09-27 Thread muszek
Public bug reported:

Summary is pretty much self-explanatory. More details:

I have a separate partition mounted as /home. I filled it (remotely,
via ftp if that matters), then logged out of User1 session in gnome and
tried to log in to User2. The screen went black, then I saw CLI black
login screen for a brief moment (less than a second) and it returned to
GTK login screen, just as if I just booted the PC (no errors, not
anything that would tell me what went wrong).

[Bug 62642] files deleted from usb storage devices mishandled

2006-09-27 Thread muszek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When user deletes file(s) from a USB storage device (such as an mp3 player or
pendrive), they're moved to /media/$devicename/.Trash-$username and the space
is not freed. Problems:
1. user experiences a shrinking space on the device (because those files are
not really deleted).
2. those files do not appear in Gnome's Trash utility and can't be deleted via
it.
3. nautilus doesn't show hidden folders by default, so user can't see
.Trash-$username

It should be handled differently. Possible solutions:
1. Files are deleted permamenly from USB devices.
2. While nautilus shows contents of USB devices, it also shows hidden folders.
3. Gnome's Trash utility also checks for .Trash-$username of USB devices.
