[Bug 1374918] [NEW] Cannot modify some keys (here: alt-gr p)
Public bug reported: As a software developer (german keyboard) I'm using a custom keyboard layout, essentially de(basic) with four additional keys: alt-gr ö = { alt-gr ä = } alt-gr p = [(unable to modify this one from thorn) alt-gr ü = ] Over the ubuntu versions the way to modify those keys has changed, where my favorite was xmodmap (or similar, don't remeber exactly). After my upgrade vom 12.04 to 14.04 we're back at editing /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/de. While this is not very comfortable, I'm ok with that. I also found out that compiled keyboard maps are used by X11 now, so I have to sudo dpkg-reconfigure xkb-data to make the changes take effect. This worked for remapping those german umlaut keys öäü with alt-gr into bracketleft/right {} and braceright ] but not for the 'alt-gr p', which always gives me a thorn 'þ' symbol. I even tried remapping the shift-p into 'O', but that didn't work either. The original line in 'de' reads key AD10 { [ p, P, dead_hook, NoSymbol, thorn, THORN, dead_hook,NoSymbol ] }; and my modified version is key AD10 { [ p, P, braceleft, NoSymbol, thorn, THORN, dead_hook,NoSymbol ] }; There are only four entries for the key AD10: 1. german(T3) - the one I modified. 2. dvorak - nope, no dvorak here 3. neo-base - I don't even know what this is for, but also certainly not the one I'm interested in 4. htc-dream - well no, using a desktop computer with regular german keyboard. I'm guessing, something overrides the default ASCI keys? Is there a base layout I'm not aware of? Doesn't make much sense. best regards Patrick ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 14.04 Package: xkb-data 2.10.1-1ubuntu1 [modified: usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/de] ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.13.0-36.63-generic 3.13.11.6 Uname: Linux 3.13.0-36-generic x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia ApportVersion: 2.14.1-0ubuntu3.4 Architecture: amd64 CurrentDesktop: Unity Date: Sun Sep 28 09:18:36 2014 Dependencies: DistUpgraded: Fresh install DistroCodename: trusty DistroVariant: ubuntu InstallationDate: Installed on 2014-09-18 (9 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Trusty Tahr - Release amd64 (20140417) MachineType: To Be Filled By O.E.M. [Bug 757991] Re: java applications a double icon appears
I can confirm (that this is a pain). 1) Use xprops to find the proper WM_CLASS for your running application (e.g. downloaded jar, JabRef in my case). 2) From comment #16, add the proper tag to your desktop file: StartupWMClass=WM_CLASS (modify according to results of 1). This does not work yet. Actually, the app shows up for 1s and disappeared. Previously, without the startupwmclass tag, it was a void icon (nothing display), that did not work either. The trick is: 3) Put that desktop entry into your launcher, log out, log in. I was able to hit the icon shortly before it disappeared, which crashed compiz *g*. Without compiz the icon did not disappear and right-click keep in launcher worked fine. After relog, compiz works again and the icon too. Alternatively, it could work to dragdrop the desktop file to the launcher (which had no effect on my system - zero sized icon eventually?) and relog. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/757991 Title: java applications a double icon appears To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bamf/+bug/757991/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 599283] Re: active tomboy note hangs (grayed out) frequently
While the cause of me filing this bug (notes grayed out while sync) it not fixed - it is intended by the devs and I can live with it - the aggressive sync happening more often than specified in the prefs is indeed fixed. User experience could be improved further by showing a message to the user while syncing (e.g. an grayish overlay sync in progress above the note). Eventually a soft-sync option could be implemented, where sync only happends in background (i.e. no note focused by the user). Personally, I don't really need the Xmin sync, but actually only once after I close the note. Anyways, I mark this one as fix released for tomboy(ubuntu) as well. ** Changed in: tomboy (Ubuntu) Status: New = Fix Released -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/599283 Title: active tomboy note hangs (grayed out) frequently To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/tomboy/+bug/599283/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 991993] [NEW] cannot drag drop to autohide launcher
Public bug reported: Steps to reproduce: 1) set launcher to autohide (system prefs appearance behavior) 2) drag something to the launcher, e.g. a manually created, valid desktop entry expected: launcher shows and item can be dropped actual behavior: scared launcher does not show :-) I guess this is intended to not disturb dragdrop operations in some applications by popping up the launcher. [Bug 778038] Re: gray background for initial letters
Oh, I'm sorry... obviously my translation is wrong (I'm from Germany). I'll try to describe what I wanted: In old books or tales, the first Letter (sometimes the first word) has a special look, e.g. made of trees, and takes several lines of regular text. This is called initial http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Initial In libreoffice (openoffice as well), this is possible by selecting a paragraph, then menu format paragraph. Then there is a tab, in german called Initialen where you activate it. If you do so, you get a gray background on the initial. The background of the whole paragraph as well as the bg of the single letter is set to automatic, that is, no fill. In openoffice I can change the background manually to white, which partially resolves the problem: depending on the font, there is no gray bg left (e.g. Dejavu Serif) or there is still a gray line left (e.g. Vemana2000). As I'm running Ubuntu 10.4 on the machine I'm writing from, I can confirm that this also exists in Openoffice 3.2.0 Build 9483. I just activated english language for my menus... I'll log out and report back to get the exact menu/tab names. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/778038 Title: gray background for initial letters -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 164233] Re: [Upstream] [hardy] Exporting a background with gradient produces a stripey pdf
So, we're testing. (The attachment contains six files, three created with OpenOffice, three produced with Inkscape.) 1) If this is *not* an ooo bug, gradients produced with other programs should have the same issue: not the case. Create a gradient with inkscape, store as pdf - looks fine in all viewers. (attached: is.pdf) 2) Maybe inkscape produces the pdf differently? Not the case. Create a gradient in ooo, store as svg (attached: ooo.svg). Open with inkscape and you see a wierd gradient in inkscape (no fine stripes, but large blurry ones). Interestingly, the text stored from OOo is missing. Export as pdf (attached: ooo.svg-is.pdf) and you get the exact same stripes as directly exporting from ooo, but this time without text. 3) Lets do it the other way around. Create gradient with inkscape, store as svg (attached: is.svg). Open with OpenOffice, ohm... actually I get an empty (white) background and a large green block (the font in inkscape was green). The export to pdf reveals a little more, that is an inverted gradient plus the green block (attached: is.svg-ooo.pdf). 4) For the sake of completeness, I also included the original issue, that is, creating the gradient in OOo and exporting as pdf (attached: ooo.pdf). Conclusion: There's a lot of stuff going wrong. - OpenOffice produces wierd gradients (not only in PDF, but also SVG). - OpenOffice can't open Inkscape produced SVG files properly... I should file another bug for this, actually I didn't expect it. But I don't have the time right now. - Inkscape does not find/display the text stored in OOo (another bug? [Bug 255727] Re: Two panels appear on main desktop after reboot after detaching external monitor.
So, after searching from here to upstream, from the non-duplicate upstream bug to forum posts, out-of-date PPAs I ask myself if this can be resolved somehow. The upstream bug refers to problems where applications do not open on the correct monitor. However, this is not the issue here: when monitor 2 is gone, the gnome-panel resorts to the available monitor - which is of course useful in many respects. Typically, you don't want your applications be left alone in the void. BUT when working in a dualscreen environment and from time to time only on a single monitor, this is just so anyoing. This issue is open for a long time. So, I'm fine with the behavior as default: always revert back to an available monitor, if the original target is lost somehow. However, for the scenario depicted in this bug, it should be possible to lock a particular panel to a particular monitor, even if it is not showing then. Basically, I suggest to add an option right-click on the panel preferences to force a monitor, even if not present. This raises the issue of lost panels, so eventually there should also be the possibility to gather lost panels, e.g. by right-click on any panel find lost panels from disconnected monitors. I could live without the second - advanced - option, since I know where to look in the gconf. If all this stuff confuses the majority of users that have only one monitor or always work with two mons, I'm also fine with a gconf option to deactivate this save switching off. [Bug 389519] Re: Cursor can move off-screen when dual-monitors do not form rectangular area
If you're looking for a simple workaround for the mouse problem (which is not polling the mouse), I wrote a small tool to prevent the mouse from entering the void. This is not a patch, nor will it satisfy everyone. Refer to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libxrandr/+bug/373367/comments/10 This is just a workaround until this tricky topic gets handled upstream by implementing one or more policies. -- Cursor can move off-screen when dual-monitors do not form rectangular area https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/389519 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 389519] Re: Cursor can move off-screen when dual-monitors do not form rectangular area
Thanks for the flowers, but what I did is not a fix :) And I agree with the devs that the topic isn't solved easily. People have very different habbits and in my/your oppinion-weird layouts may be useful to others. However, I also agree with you that at least some options (that extend the current default behavior) could be implemented rather quickly. Anyways, this is open source and we love it. So don't expect something to be done quickly... or do it yourself and provide a patch ;-) I can't do it. -- Cursor can move off-screen when dual-monitors do not form rectangular area https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/389519 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 599283] Re: active tomboy note hangs (grayed out) frequently
Welcome back, Sandy - and thanks for your hard work on tomboy/droid :) Meanwhile I was thinking about nice but simple ways to improve the tomboy-autosync experience. 1) A sync in progress message is the easiest way to explain what happens. Stupid users like me would not file bugs. 2) Instead of triggering new timers when the note is edited, tomboy should sync every N min, but delay sync whenever a note is edited. Starvation could be prevented by decreasing the delay over time or forcing a sync after 2*N min? Whenever a starving note loses focus, a immediate sync could be forced - this way most syncs are not blocking the user. Only if the user continuously edits a note for more than 2*N minutes without switching to other programs... this would never happen for me. 3) Buffered editing and two layers :-P Ok, ok. Ignore this one. -- active tomboy note hangs (grayed out) frequently https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/599283 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hoppla. So, before posting, I also issued the apport collect ;-) Actually, my regular sound card (hw0, I guess) works fine for any purpose. I can confirm this on my desktop computer (can't add dmesg as I'm currently on my laptop, which seems to work just fine). 1) dmesg shows some huge gaps and 2) when GDM shows, it hangs a long time (20seconds+) where neither mouse nor keyboard are responding - however, all keypresses/mousemovements are handled after the hang 3) after I enter my password, the login is rather slow, but this could also relate to the lots of stuff running on my desktop/server ;-) As I'm running multiple services (mysql, openssh, apache, mythtv- backend), I thought it might be related to one of those... or the combination of them, but since noone here mentioned one of these, its probably not the case. I can also confirm this on Ubuntu10.4 with MythTV 0.23. Isn't there also a way to shutdown the backend manually? [Bug 599283] Re: active tomboy note hangs (grayed out) frequently
Since I now know, how it works (and made my own thoughts), I'm fine with the technique. I agree, that the double-layer to separate sync-locks and editing is tricky to implement. (1) Probably it is useful to tell the users, that this lock will happen - as the typical user does not know about sync problems and he wouldn't expect it. (2) When you skip over the code, have a look if the sync lock can appear more often than the sync interval (this was my feeling). Other than that, this bug can be closed. [Bug 599283] [NEW] active tomboy note hangs (grayed out) frequently
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: tomboy While editing a note, it is frequently grayed out for several seconds. The note is not responding to basic edit attempts. Since this happens very frequently and takes the longer the larger the note is, I suspect it may be some problem with ubuntu-one sync, which locks the underlying note file? I'm not familiar with the sync technique of ubuntu one. Alternatively, it could be a bad implemention of an autosave method. When I do not touch the note - just leaving it open on the screen - it does not happen. When I'm actively editing the note, it happens more frequently than the sync interval, can't say exactly. So this speaks against ubuntu one sync. I'll turn of autosync now and report back later. [Bug 599283] Re: active tomboy note hangs (grayed out) frequently
ok, I see. But it is possible to separate ubuntu one sync's lock and the actual note being edited by a second layer - like tomboy saves the notes in an specific interval and thaat should be way faster than ~5 secs, and intermittently u1 syncs the notes currently on HDD (not memory). I don't say it is easy, but it is possible. Maybe someone has the time and motivation to do it. Btw, this does not happen every 10min (auto sync interval), but every 3 mins or somehting like that. Actually, I turned off auto sync because this is too anoying (superfast internet connection here, still takes several seconds). Maybe this can be put to the whichlist? best Pat -- active tomboy note hangs (grayed out) frequently https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/599283 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 599283] Re: active tomboy note hangs (grayed out) frequently
Alternatively - can I run the sync on startup, only? Also, I wouldn't mind a longer shutdown time because tomboy tries to sync be4 shutdown (not sure, if that would work - depends on when tomboy/network is shutdown and if the OS is waiting for orderly shutdown). I haven't found anything useful in tomboys arguments (which also lack --without-search-window). Looking at the gconf entries, I can't find a simple enabled=true/false flag. What happens, when I increase the autosync_timeout to an insane value? Does tomboy sync on startup, then start the timer (which would be fine), or the other way around, i.e. start the timer and sync afterwards? -- active tomboy note hangs (grayed out) frequently https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/599283 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution From time to time evolution gets stuck fetching my emails (see attached screenshot). [Bug 581628] [NEW] Evolution infinitely filters (and fails to exit)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution Due to some filters, I've set up, evolution stops functioning: 1) At the bottom it shows two processes (filtering 0%, receiving) which do neither succeed nor throw an error. I'm also unable to stop them by using the little stop buttons. Just nothing happens, no errors on console. 2) Probably a result from 1): In this condition, evolution is unable to quit. Hitting the close button (or menuquit) results in all the GUI beeing grayed out. However, evolution stays in this condition. This seems to be caused by the first problem, as evolution always runs some processes before actually closing, after these have finished. Usually this is less than a second, but due to the infinite running processes the job queue doen't clear and evolution waits? Why are the filters the problem? a) I deactivated several accounts (actually, I have 4 active accounts, 2 pop, 2 imap) round-robin (killall evolution, restarted), but the filtering process remained at 0%, however the infinite receiving process is now gone. b) I deactivated all filters - problem gone. [Bug 462419] Re: evince apparmor profile prevents movies from opening
For my previous postings, my file was the same as the one posted by Pausanias on 2009-11-10. The attached file is the current one (no time for a diff, its lunchtime - sry). Just to prevent confusion - today I got some evince-related updates from the update-manager, and thus the /etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/evince file changed. It asked me to keep my modified version or to get the current upstream version. I accepted the current upstream version, so my current file is not the same as posted by Pausanias on 2009-11-10. However, the changes were related to browsers and other stuff - totem, vlc, and videos were not involved. Consequently the problem remains unsolved. The current upstream version gives me the same errors as before. I'll now try to add the mystical two lines, again, and reload apparmor. Unfortunately, nothing changed. The message in kern.log remains, telling Nov 11 12:00:31 dell-xps kernel: [ 1098.989525] type=1503 audit(1257937231.565:30): operation=exec pid=2418 parent=2417 profile=/usr/bin/evince requested_mask=::x denied_mask=::x fsuid=1000 ouid=0 name=/usr/bin/totem Furthermore evince is unable to read the /etc/gnome/defaults.list Nov 11 11:59:38 dell-xps kernel: [ 1045.440625] type=1503 audit(1257937178.014:28): operation=open pid=2408 parent=1 profile=/usr/bin/evince requested_mask=::r denied_mask=::r fsuid=1000 ouid=0 name=/etc/gnome/defaults.list Anyways, I'm not able to change the default video player.. tried system-preferences-preferred applications, but the menu only talks about multimedia in general. [Bug 373367] Re: Pointer goes offscreen on non-rectangular dual-head
In reply to #3, with karmic the issue stil remains unchanged / unsolved -- since the virtual screen is rectangular, but the physical is not. Does anyone know a workaround (like blocking mouse pointer from entering specific coordinates)? I don't know how mouse cursors are handled in ubuntu, so I don't even know where to start looking. I'd be willing to write my own code, too. -- Pointer goes offscreen on non-rectangular dual-head https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/373367 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 462419] Re: evince apparmor profile prevents movies from opening
Unfortunatelly, this did not solve the problem. Comparing my /etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/evince with yours showed that you added the following two lines (in the supported archivers paragraph) /usr/bin/vlc ixr, /usr/bin/totem ixr, I also added the lines to my evince file and rebooted. However, this didn't resolve the problem. In /var/log/kern.log I found another entry that could be related to this problem. After clicking on the movie link in my pdf file, the following lines appear in /var/log/kern.log Nov 10 11:37:05 dell-xps kernel: [ 468.494963] type=1503 audit(1257849425.550:24): operation=open pid=2009 parent=1981 profile=/usr/bin/evince requested_mask=::r denied_mask=::r fsuid=1000 ouid=0 name=/etc/gnome/defaults.list Nov 10 11:37:05 dell-xps kernel: [ 468.499915] type=1503 audit(1257849425.554:25): operation=exec pid=2013 parent=1 profile=/usr/bin/evince requested_mask=::x denied_mask=::x fsuid=1000 ouid=0 name=/usr/bin/totem I think, evince first tries to figure out which is the default video player by accessing /etc/gnome/defaults.list (mask=::r means ready only, I guess?) - it fails, but evince then uses totem anyways, which is indeed the default on my almost fresh install of karmic. However, that fails too. I'm not sure about those masks - but I'm trying to enable read access to /etc/gnome/defaults.list and report back in a few minutes. -- evince apparmor profile prevents movies from opening https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/462419 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

In order to allow the access to the defaults.list, I added /etc/gnome/defaults.list r, but nothing changed. This bug affects me, too (Karmic Koala). Links to external files in a PDF document cannot be opened by evince due to permission problems. I generated a minimal example pdf using latex (see attachments movie.pdf, movie.mp4, movie.tex). The movie is required to be in the same directory as the PDF document. ** Attachment added: the pdf document (requires movie.mp4) http://launchpadlibrarian.net/35410360/movie.pdf -- evince apparmor profile prevents movies from opening https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/462419 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
