Can confirm this bug 2011-02-19 in Ubuntu 10.10.
I have Pentium D desktop, not laptop. Error message flash over screen at boot,
but it boots ok at last
What I have done recently to my system, is I installed from Synaptic several
Ubuntu programs to monitor
temperature kernel-i2 sensors.

[Bug 543911] Re: NVIDIA graphic card

2010-03-22 Thread Oddvar Kvernevik
And Hi Ubuntu people. I am one of your biggest fans and have been using Linux
since Mandrake/Mandriva. And Ubuntu since 2005. I think the reason for this bug
is the threshold is set too low. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 on this desktop, and
the temperature vary from 65 to 72 C. I have tried to change the limits myself
to 80C before warning and shutdown. Anyhow the existing limits are way too low,
I think 70C would bring my computer down.
Just think what this would have done to a production computer. Automatic
shutdown during important updates?
Fix this problem if you want Ubuntu to be a serious contender in this big market

It happened again!!
In spite I set the shutdown-temperature to 80 C it just went off, and I got
this message on reboot about high temperature.
This is a shame for Ubuntu, and I consider giving it up now until this bug is
fixed. What do you expect people to do? Buy new graphic card because of this
bug?

[Bug 543911] [NEW] NVIDIA graphic card

2010-03-21 Thread Oddvar Kvernevik
Public bug reported:

This is a highly annoying bug. I dont know from where this idea came, to make
Ubuntu oversensitive to heat.
No matter how or why, my computer with Nvidia 8500 GT is constantly overheating.
This is a major bug because every time I try to install Ubuntu 9.10, it fails
because overheating shut down my computer. It has happened at least 4 times in
the last 2 days. Only way I found out of this, was to first install Ubuntu 8.04
and then later Ubuntu 9.10.
This has been a highly annoying bug, making my new computer with Pentium D
processor unusable.
Before this temperature aware program came into Ubuntu, I never had a single
problem in any Ubuntu or Windows.
Give me back how it was before!

Re: [Bug 484850] Re: gnome-dictionary-applet 2.28.1 window frame's shadow stays on desktop.

2009-11-26 Thread oddvar
Thank you for responding. That shadow outline has disappeared from my
desktop. Thanks a lot. However there is no way I  can see to start the
advanced desktop Compiz config settings. compizconfig don't give any
clue. If anything I think this must be related to missing support for my
Nvidia gforce card.

oddvar: I'm happy this worked for you. I did not edited any configuration text
though. I think that you didn't use the ADVANCED CompizConfig Settings Manager.
If you have it installed it must be under System-Preferences-CompizConfig
Settings Manager.Open the software center and write compizconfig (one word) and
install the ADVANVCED ccsm.

Gabe Gorelick: Thanks for noticing a possible duplicate. I think that the bug
#449272 is similar but requires a different fix. Check also the bug #428783
which was the same problem but with the clock applet. The fix for the clock
applet can't fix the invest-applet and the fix for the invest applet can't fix
the dictionary applet. You can find a conversation with the same subject
(concerning when we should file a separate bug report) between the last
comments of the bug #428783 .

2009-11-23 Thread oddvar
This did the trick! There is no drop-down menu for the  Window
decoration, but manually change the text to Normal makes the drop-down
shadow disappear. Thanks a lot. How did you make to find out the text
for the settings should be changed to Normal?

Well. I think I found something. As I suggested above, I made some tests with
compiz options. At some point I tried to disable window decoration (without
disabling compiz) but whatever I tried the little square was ticked (is this
another bug?). So, I tried changing the settings regarding window decoration.
This is just a partial workaround, not a solution. (But maybe it helps somebody
until we find a real solution) :
---
1)Install the CompizConfig Settings Manager if you don't have it.
2)Open it from System-Preferences-CompizConfig Settings Manager
3)Find Window decoration and click it.
4)Go to the last line where it says Shadow windows
5)CHANGE THE RESPECTIVE FIELD FROM any to type=Normal
---
This way you don't have the little annoying frame shadow on your desktop
without losing your compiz effects.

We now have a hint that maybe, for an unknown reason, windows manager
sees an open window where the dictionary window was even when we close
it pressing esc.

What do you do to close the dictionary window? Maybe there is a problem
regarding how that window type closes. Maybe there is a problem with the
way the certain window closes as IF YOU TERMINATE THE gnome-dictionary-
applet THE SHADOW DISSAPPEARES again until you give another word. Also,
if you give an unknown word, it seems like there is no way to close the
window.(I think this is also a bug)

Where can I find the source code of the applet? In what language it is
written? I don't say I can solve the problem but maybe it's an
opportunity for me to learn something so I can help more in the future.

Turning off your desktop effects is normal, as metacity is a minimal
window manager without fancy effects. But you shouldn't be getting an
error message when you try to run metacity. Can you provide the exact
error message you get when you run metacity --replace?

Very weird. A couple things to help diagnose this:
1. Does this occur while using a different graphics driver?
2. Does this occur while using a different window manager?

to work: Go to

I don't think this is related to asoundconf-gtk, which is a very simple
python application for using the asoundconf macro in a graphical
environment to select the default ALSA sound card, but rather to ALSA
(ie, the kernel) itself. You would do well to elaborate when the beep
sound is occasioned.

Yes you are correct. This beep sound is not a system-sound, but some very
low- volume pulse or likewise. The sound is not always there at boot, I would
say more like 76-80% of the time. When it is strong enough to catch my attention
it is very annoying. I noticed after I installed Gutsy the sound disappeared
but came back after system update.

I presume the tick box to the left is enabled? If you click the play
button do you get a short drum roll? The reason I'm asking about this
option is that if it is enabled but you have no sound specified, you get
a system beep instead.  I thought that might have been the cause;
clearly the problem is not that simple.

[Bug 249306] [NEW] Embedded audio-files in webpages

Why could not this be automatically solved, and spare me for much time and

[Bug 181715] Problem with cd/rw disks

2008-01-10 Thread oddvar
Public bug reported:

Time after time I experience problem with cd/rw disks in Ubuntu Feisty.
Not even does if fail to blank the disk, but even to mount the volume. So
I have to turn to Windows for the sole purpose of reusing my cd/rw disk.
None of the Ubuntu versions I have tried to use until now, have managed
to handle cd/rw disks. I see there are command-line to erase a disk, but
it cant be used when the volume cant even be mounted. In Win it is as
easy as right click and erase disk.

[Bug 147170] Re: Upgrade from Dapper give bug?

2007-10-02 Thread oddvar
Hi, I have tried nvidia-glx-new earlier, and it is not giving any improvements.
As a matter of fact, it chrashes my x-session and I have only text-based
interface. The same both for nvidia-glx-new and nvidia-glx.
At present I'm back to Dapper, and I cant understand why this old release is
functioning well for *most* of what I want from my computer, but none of the
newer versions do that.
As a matter of fact, none of the Ubuntu releases have been able to utilize
CD-DW. I can write only once, and from there only read. But the symbol CD-RW
present.

[Bug 141470] Nvidia graphic card

2007-09-21 Thread oddvar
Public bug reported:

I have Nvidia Gforce 7100 something graphic card. When I boot from the
install cd (Feisty) I get the default resolution 1280x1024 as I want , but
after installing Feisty I am stuck with resolution 860x600. I have tried many
ways to get the resolution I want, and I make it via the script not sure
correct name dpkg-regonfigure...
Then I make to get a better resolution, but something tells me this is not
correct anyhow!
First I experience errors in different programs like xawtv, which function ok
when I install/run from live-cd. And in Azureus which give me an error msg
after many hours downloading. And after installing nvidia-glx I have no graphic
screen. So there are in fact many different things that tell me the main
problem is the Nvidia drivers. If anyone want to check, you might find many
errors I have reported the last months. And I think it is all because of this
problem with the Nvidia drivers. At current time I can force a resolution
1280x1024, but then I can not play the game supertux because this report error
in screen resolution.

Now the final thing is that *everything* functioned perfect the first
time I installed Feisty - about 3-4 months ago.

[Bug 134436] rigth-click on desktop give no response

2007-08-23 Thread oddvar
Public bug reported:

I tried do renew bittorrent downloads by right-clicking the files to find the
complete names via cut and paste.
Then I noticed the computer stop responding or respond very slow to usual
commands/desktop behavior.
Now right-clicking on an empty desktop give no respond whatsoever, and I dont
know how to find out what processes are keeping my computer busy.
I guess after a restart it will respond ok again, but then I lose all ongoing
downloads.
