Why are you chasing up the packaging of an obsolete app?

[Bug 322344] Re: Distortion in active audio when using system sounds

2009-02-19 Thread Oli
I have found the distortion (at least on my system) is exacerbated by
loud sounds. High-bass music or loud sequences in video (gun-shots,
dramatic music, etc).

I've also found that each time it distorts, the sync with the video is
lost, like there's a growing latency as the video plays.

Very peculiar.

[Bug 326189] [NEW] Tool tips show in wrong place after click

2009-02-06 Thread Oli
Public bug reported:

Just moved over to Jaunty and I've noticed that tool-tips appear to be a
little squiffy. (See attachment)

When moving the mouse they work correctly but once you click on
something (and leave the mouse stationary), the tool tip loads 10px from
the top-most, left-most corner of my primary screen (I'm using Nvidia
Twinview). The mis-placed tool tips only show up on the primary screen.
The problem still happens if I do things to cause it on the secondary
screen, but the tips are still on the primary.

I don't know where to file this bug so I'd appreciate people assigning
this how they see fit, but it looks like the tool-tip-displayer isn't
getting the mouse position correctly after the click (it thinks the
mouse is at 0,0 so displays the tip at 10,10?)... Just a guess, but
assign away.

[Bug 123064] Re: Upgrade to Eclipse 3.4.2

2009-04-17 Thread Oli
We're quickly approaching two years since this bug was launched, many
people have said things but nothing has come from it to get a proper
package-build-process started. Considering how many developers use
Eclipse (for so many different things), I would have put money on this
being fixed 18 months ago... And I would have lost.

So apart from people randomly assigning this to random groups
(Medibuntu? wtf?!), what's going on? People appear to be taking this on,
finding it doesn't build and eventually giving up. Is there any way we
can elevate this from a community bug to a proper Canonical "we can't
release Karmic with E3.2" bug?

Because shipping Eclipse 3.2 in Intrepid and Jaunty is a complete joke.
Shipping it in Karmic is just lazy. If we can't do it as a community,
lets get Canonical and Sun talking to resolve this issue before we start
getting laughed at.

Re: [Bug 123064] Re: Upgrade to Eclipse 3.4.2

2009-04-17 Thread Oli
Caesar, that's really dangerous thinking there. Those same arguments could
be levelled against lots of other mature apps that have their own
ecosystems... Surely you wouldn't suggest not packaging (for example)
Firefox?

We use packages for a good reason: it keeps things sturdy and constant
between similar machines and results in a standardised install process you
can script for any machine. It also, psychologically speaking, instils an
ethos of installing things from a trusted source. Downloading things from
all-over the internet is one reason why the security landscape is so mired
on Windows.

You might try and say that Eclipse appeals to a different audience but
looking at Add/Remove, it's is one of the most popular packages in the
package popularity contest for the Programming section, only beaten outright
by Python (for obvious reasons). People want it and they want to get it from
Ubuntu's repositories.

I don't deny that downloading and untarring Eclipse from eclipse.org works
but that's not the point. Eclipse is major software that thousands (if not
millions) of people use. "It's a waste of time" doesn't seem like a valid
argument.

Re: [Bug 331369] Re: regression vs. notification-daemon: positioning when multiple screens are available

2009-04-06 Thread Oli
I'm not sure it does behave like that here. I'll let you know how I'm set up
and you can decide if it's how it's supposed to work... All I know is it's
not how I'd like it.

I'm using twinview. I believe that's a single X screen. I have two
panels:

   1. At the bottom of my primary screen (left), containing the menu and a
   window list
   2. At the bottom of my secondary screen (right), containing a window
list, notification area, clock, user switch applet and a couple of other
   little applets

Notifications currently show on the top-right of my primary screen.
I want them hugging the notification area: bottom-right of my secondary
screen.

I tried to enable follow but it hasn't worked without a restart (it may work
when I do restart) but I think it'll be too disorientating. I'd rather the
notifications just happened in one place.

[Bug 331369] Re: regression vs. notification-daemon: positioning when multiple screens are available

2009-03-31 Thread Oli
"Fix Released"? More like "Bug Released"

Yeah, I'm in the other camp. I have two screens. They're identical and
right next to each other. My display is like one 3840x1200px sheet of
beauty...

Notifications, with the exception of a few hiccoughs, have been perfect
*for me* pretty much since they were implemented.

Needless to say, I'm less than happy with the "fix". People have
suggested various fixes but there is only one that will make people
happy: let us decide. Store something in gconf. Add a tab to the
Appearance Preferences screen.

[Bug 355155] Re: Computer hard locks randomly with ubuntu jaunty

2009-05-19 Thread Oli
I have recently switched over from Gutsy to Jaunty (fresh install), and
the system started to freeze randomly, although the REISUB combination
usually worked.

After downgrading to 2.4.27, the system ran stable again for several
days, but eventually locked up too. Then I tried the standard Jaunty
kernel (2.6.28-11-generic) once more, and the system was mostly stable
again (froze "only" twice in the past week). However, after the last
freeze yesterday, it has become unusable again; starting Gimp and
Firefox froze the system every time (with and without plugged network
cable, with and without acpi option, with and without activated
swap), although I had used these programs a lot over the last week without
problems.

These freezes were also hard freezes, ie. the REISUB combination did
not work, Caps Lock did not blink, and even the mouse cursor was frozen.

I am now using the PPA mainline kernel 2.6.27-02062710-generic again,
and this seems to work; for now. As far as I remember, I have not
installed anything in the past few days, so it has been essentially the
same system all the time, and the computer has been running flawlessly with
Gutsy for over a year now.

The computer is a Dell Optiplex 745 (Intel Core Duo, ATI Radeon X1300/X1500),
and I am not using any proprietary drivers.

[Bug 409250] [NEW] lib32asound2-plugins omits libasound_module_pcm_pulse.so

2009-08-05 Thread Oli
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: lib32asound2-plugins

lib32asound2-plugins doesn't ship one the the (arguably) most important
libraries: libasound_module_pcm_pulse.so

This breaks alsa sound in 32bit apps that require a 32bit version of
alsa (wine, skype, etc)

If this effects you, you can temporarily fix it yourself by grabbing the
32bit version of the lib and stuffing it in your /usr/lib32/alsa-lib
dir. Full instructions:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=7736277&postcount=15

But yes, we need the pulseaudio plugin shipping in lib32asound2-plugins.

Re: [Bug 408615] Re: libasound_module_conf_pulse.so is missing from lib32asound-plugins

2009-08-07 Thread Oli
I'm sure I don't understand the complexities of the lib32 packaging process,
but I know on my system just using the standard 32bit version of
libasound_module_conf_pulse.so works.

It *was* my belief that the lib32 libs are just repackaged builds of the
32bit libs. It sounds like that is not the case but considering it works,
why not do just that?

[Bug 410805] [NEW] Right click event occasionally fires twice

2009-08-08 Thread Oli
Public bug reported:

Occasionally (around one in seven times) when I right click, two right
clicks are registered.

This is especially chaotic when I do things like right click to open a
context menu and the second fake click triggers the first menu item. Or
when I'm trying to relieve stress by playing Simon Tatham's wonderful
netwalk clone, Net, and the network pipe spins around twice when I only
wanted it to spin once.

Okay. These are fairly minor issues but it's slowly grinding me down.
And they could be a symptom of another, far worse issue that hasn't
shown itself yet.

Things I have checked:
 - My finger: Well I was told on the forums it could be me. It's not. Let us
move on.
 - Hardware: I've checked the mouse and I've changed to another mouse. Both
mice are USB but I don't have a PS/2 mouse port on this motherboard. I've also
used both mice (about two hours ago, to test) on a Windows computer. The mice
are fine.
 - Double-click timeout: To test, I set it to its lowest (where it's very hard
to double click when you actually want to) and the accidental
double-right-clicks were still getting through!
 - xev: When the double-right-clicks occur, I see two full right click cycles
with very, very close timecodes (14693245 vs 14693276 = 21ms(?) delay)

I'm not sure what else I should test. Please suggest.

[Bug 411856] [NEW] Lame default for memcached in karmic

2009-08-11 Thread Oli
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: memcached

By default memcached stops itself loading thanks to /etc/default/memcache
Additionally, you cannot load it through /etc/init.d/memcache for the same
reason.

This is about as counter-intuitive as ubuntu gets. If somebody installs
memcached, there's zero doubt they want to run it. It's sole purpose of
being on a system is to run.

So there are two bugs here. Firstly, the default should be to run (just
a tiny edit to the default needed) and secondly, even if the default is
stopped, the user should be able to launch it manually through init.d

** Affects: memcached (Ubuntu)

 Status: New

Same behaviour, exactly as described.

It *does* set the volume though - It goes to the point where you stopped
dragging when you unmute.

[Bug 97655] Re: dmraid45 target please

2007-10-10 Thread Oli
I've got 900gigs of data trapped in a [fake]RAID5 array. I've been
following this thread for months because I'm really itching to get off
Windows and onto Linux. This is my final deal-breaking hurdle.

I've tried pactching and compiling the latest patch from Heinz but when
compiling I hit:
  CC [M] drivers/md/raid10.o
  CC [M] drivers/md/dm-raid1.o
In file included from drivers/md/dm-raid1.c:9:
drivers/md/dm-io.h:84: warning: ‘struct io_control’ declared inside parameter
list

declaration, which is probably not what you want
drivers/md/dm-io.h:84: error: conflicting types for ‘dm_io’
drivers/md/dm-io.h:77: error: previous declaration of ‘dm_io’ was here

make[1]: *** [drivers] Error 2

make: *** [debian/stamp-build-kernel] Error 2

So yes another error for yet another day. Hoorah. Does anybody know
enough about all this to see why that's fouling up so bad? This is my
first kernel compile (I tried it twice in case it was me following
instructions wrong) so I'm way out of my depth =)

I'm on 2.6.22-14-generic if that makes any difference.

And Zach, did you have any luck? If you did I'd *REALLY* appreciate a
kick in the right direction (or a step-by-step). Cheers.

[Bug 97655] Re: dmraid45 target please

2007-10-10 Thread Oli
Well I got it to compile into the kernel (I had to move device mapper
support into the kernel to do it). Booted to it fine (well except for
the graphics meltdown - but oh well =) but I can't get dmraid to list my
RAID5 volumes.

My RAID0 stripe is coming through fine but RAID5 is still MIA. I'm not
entirely sure how to poke around and try to get this thing finding them
but any help is vastly appreciated.

The RAID device is a Sil 3114

[Bug 110669] Re: mdadm arrays dissaper on reboot after upgrade to feisty

2007-11-23 Thread Oli
Well I fixed it after trawling the intarweb for a few more minutes.

I ran:
sudo dppg-reconfigure mdadm

Accepted all the defaults. If you've never played silly-buggers with
your kernels, this *might* fix it for you, but as it was, I have built a
couple of kernels before and the initramfs-update was trying to write to
one of those (that I don't use). So I had to remove all the custom
kernels and reinstall 2.6.22-14-generic in synaptic. I then ran dpkg-
reconfigure again, it wrote the to correct kernel image, I rebooted, and
my RAID works. Woo!

Oh one important (I think) note, my mdadm.conf contains the UUID of my
HDs, not names because the names seem to be quite fluid (they kept
changing name every boot). If you're not set up like this, I suggest
doing so.

[Bug 114170] Re: Software RAID sometimes fails to assemble arrays on boot

Sorry to hassle you Bret but which command worked to fix a gutsy
upgrade? Several Gutsy users (myself included) don't have their mdadm
arrays assembled on boot, like this, just 100% of the time. If you were
experiencing the same, could you take 5 minutes out to explain the fix
so I can pass it along, and I would be very thankful.

[Bug 110669] Re: mdadm arrays dissaper on reboot after upgrade to feisty

2007-11-23 Thread Oli
I'm having similar issues but my remedy is slightly different.

My RAID1 isn't critical (yet) to the system so when things are booted up I just
click an icon and this runs:
modprobe md
mdadm --assemble --scan
mount -a

It's not elegant and it needs root privs and while things are like this,
there's no chance of me moving /home onto the RAID1. Hooray.

[Bug 188005] [NEW] Massive lag in pulseaudio

Public bug reported:

I'm using module-alsa-sink to route pulseaudio through to hardware (for

nanog: yes. Just restarted to make sure. Same as usual happened:

1. I clicked places, then the bookmark
2. It asked me for the keyring password
3. It thinks for a while and then asks me for another password (this time it
will only accept the ssh password - as if it's not getting/using the correct
data from the keyring)
4. Nautilus loads showing the / dir on the ssh, rather than the bookmarked
directory.
5. I navigate to my home and upload some files,
6. Crash. Bam. Wallop. The whole of Nautilus/panels/etc restart.

[Bug 97655] Re: dmraid45 target please

2007-11-29 Thread Oli
dmraid and mdadm raid are two completely different modules that are
AFAIK completely unrelated. dmraid is for hardware fakeraid while mdadm
raid is pure software raid.

I've had similar mdadm raid issues though. I fixed it by running:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure mdadm

Accept the defaults and at the end it should show you that it is writing
to a boot image. If that boot image is *not* your current kernel, find
your kernel in synaptic (search for "linux-image") and mark it for
reinstallation. Then reconfigure mdadm again and it should write to the
correct boot image.

This all assumes you've got the correct mdadm config in the first place
(correct mdadm.conf settings, valid fstab entry, etc). If you're still
stuck, search the forums because there are lots of helpy bits there.

Sorry for bumping this Marques, but how exactly did you do that? I've
been trying it but it keeps trying to take ubuntu-desktop along with it.

[Bug 184440] Re: [nvidia] Blue hue in all videos

2008-01-24 Thread Oli
I had this when first moving to Hardy. I had to set the hue to 0

But that was last week. Things *seem* to be working as expected now. Is
that true for you too?

[Bug 185441] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in g_str_hash()

2008-01-25 Thread Oli
I have to say that SFTP is extremely dodgy in Hardy at the moment. I get
the same errors when uploading just one file.

I'm not sure if it's related but I also get a new dialogue box popping
up asking me for a password *after* I'm asked to unlock the keyring.
There are also a great deal of "Cannot mount", etc errors that seem to
bare no resemblance to what's actually going on on my system (eg: the
error box will appear but everything's working fine)

[Bug 185944] [NEW] [Hardy] Window List 2.21.5 will only show applications from ALL desktops

2008-01-25 Thread Oli
Public bug reported:

I have two screens bound in twinview. At the bottom of each physical
screen there is a panel containing a window list. I have 4 virtual
desktops.

If I open an application on Desktop 1 (d1 here-on), an entry appears in the d1
window list, on the screen it was started (as expected).
If I change desktop to d2, d3 or d4 I can *still* see that window entry on the
left-hand window panel (bug).

The same happens if I open a window on d2 (et al) - the window lists
for all desktops will display entries for all programs.

I know there is a config option to change the behaviour but mine is set
to "Show windows from current workspace", not "*all* workspaces".

I'd like to help as much as I can so just ask if you need more detail to
triage and cure this issue.

[Bug 63382] Re: Totem should allow to change hotkeys

2007-12-29 Thread Oli
I'm using 2.20.0 and I can't find *any* method of setting shortcut keys.

pause, full-screen, volume up and down).

It's way too late for packages to be included by default, but it's never too

It would be great for Intrepid but for now all we need is repo-access to

[Bug 194214] Re: Keys get "stuck" down

2008-04-02 Thread Oli
Well this isn't fixed for me. I know that's a useless statement but I
don't exactly know how to qualify it further other than explaining:

Mashing a bunch of keys and mousebuttons in VMWare or some fullscreen
games reproduces this almost instantaneously. Still only happens under
compiz. Same MO as before.

[Bug 194214] Re: Keys get "stuck" down

2008-04-03 Thread Oli
Chris: What part of nq's last comment isn't completely aligned with this
bug description? They and I are still having near identical experiences
to what you described... Here's how I see it:

 - one key or a combination of keys are indefinitely looped
 - it often kills off modifier keys (shift, alt, etc) but not necessarily all
of them
 - usually triggered under load
 - anecdotally associated with mouse clicking (certainly my experience when
playing games)
 - associated with Compiz (many users can only reproduce this bug under Compiz
- though that may be to do with load)
 - restarting X halts the loop
 - it's a bloody annoying bug

And it's still all over my system. Seriously though, doesn't that MO
look a lot like your description? It's all very well stating that this
patch fixed it for you but that doesn't mean a variation on the same bug
isn't manifesting in other code. Multiple people saying the same thing
would tend to suggest this issue isn't (or, at least, shouldn't be)
closed.

[Bug 194214] Re: Keys get "stuck" down

2008-04-03 Thread Oli
On the crashing note, often when I have things looping, newly launched
apps will crash out. Firefox (latest beta) and Tomboy are two key
examples of this. When I can next safely restart X, I'll force a
modifier key lock-up. I think that's what causes most crashes.

nq: open up a terminal, force the bug and switch back to the terminal.
Are you seeing repeated keystrokes?

And yeah, looks like I'm on the right version:

[Bug 196506] [NEW] Compiz forgets plugins when disabled and reenabled

2008-02-28 Thread Oli
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Effects: (my) Hardy-latest

To replicate:
 - Start with compiz loaded with some settings (wobbly windows, animations,
etc).
 - Open up Appearance Preferences from the desktop and click the Visual Effects
tab.
 - Change the radio to "None", then back to "Extra".
 - You should now have compiz loaded, just with no chosen plugins.

I have to disable Compiz for some fullscreen applications and games so
this is thoroughly annoying for me.

I started noticing this behaviour when the Extra tab and customise
button disappeared though I'm not sure this caused the meltdown.

[Bug 196506] Re: Compiz forgets plugins when disabled and reenabled

2008-02-28 Thread Oli
Thanks for the tip there Travis. That does indeed solve my problem, but
a few questions:

1. Don't you think that implicitly wiping settings like that is a little
confusing for people that don't know about it? Wouldn't a "reset config" button
make a lot more sense?
2. Shouldn't "normal" and "extra" have some plugins enabled by default?
3. Why hide custom in its own package? It seems like it was much simpler when
you just had custom there all the time and the link to ccsm next to it.

Oh (and this might be known) the Appearance Preferences/Visual Effects
panel never remembers that you have a custom layout - always showing
Extra selected by default.

Chase your issue across the community support in the forums, not on

Sorry I missed your first reply, Sebastien. I've attached the backgrace
from gdb. I hope it's what's needed because I've never done this

Having read the trace, I believe the issue is actually in evolution-

Re: [Bug 97655] Re: dmraid45 target please

2008-07-31 Thread Oli
I use mdadm. As you'll see from my previous posts in this thread, I had
a lot of problems trying to get my FAKERAID (onboard RAID controller)
working, so I dismantled the array and set up software RAID1 for
my /home partition.

It's not the simplest of things but if you can read and have a good
guide to follow, you can get through it.

Here is one such guide: http://bfish.xaedalus.net/?p=188

I can't stress enough how important it is that you read what's written.
And remember that setting up md-raid, as with any other new RAID array,
you'll lose all the data on the disks.

The advantage of mdraid is clear: flexibility. You can take a mismatch
batch of HDs over various controllers and jam them together. You also
have the option to safely (99% of the time) shrink and grow arrays - a
feature only the most expensive hardware RAID controllers have. But it
comes at the cost of performance. Any (decent) hardware RAID5 controller
will obliterate any software RAID.

Take care.

[Bug 194214] Re: Keys get "stuck" down

2008-05-01 Thread Oli
Asa: It is here on this system.

Tom: So what bug do I have? Its behaviour here mimics each and every
symptom of the bug submitted here. I'm really happy that the bug is
fixed for most people here but yeah... Please don't try to say it's
fixed everywhere because it's not.

There's another thread: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/124406

They're no closer to finding out what's wrong but the kernel is getting a lot
of the blame. There is one useful nugget of information that means I can
actually get on with life though:
 - create a launcher on your panel
 - set the command to: setxkbmap
 - when the bug rears its filthy blood-stained head, click it
 - carry on as if nothing happened

The same guy that came up with that found a way to 100% replicate the
bug. Load up VMWare and a guest OS, give the guest focus, hold control,
and drag the mouse out of the guest. BAM. I do a lot of copy-n-pasting
out of VMWare so I guess that's why I'm seeing it so much.

I'm curious as to why it's only some apps though. I can do that ^^^ all
day long in VirtualBox and it's fine... Hence why I'm moving to VB now
=) FOSS FTW!

[Bug 262520] Re: Make MAX_ITEMS_OR_SUBMENU a gconf key

2008-10-14 Thread Oli
There is an upstream patch to ship the variable to gconf. It's not the
perfect fix -- that would be deteching the screen height and working out
how many entries we could paint -- but it's a million miles better than
the current state of things.

I've seen this bug reported before (well over a year ago), dozens of
forum threads about it all over the internet and there's still no sign
of anybody taking it seriously.

I don't want to sound snotty but wouldn't it be even slightly possible
to get the patch worked in at our side rather than waiting another
eternity for Gnome to step up?

[Bug 282842] [NEW] Places' truncation limit on bookmarks/drives is draconian

2008-10-13 Thread Oli
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

The bookmarks/drives system in the Ubuntu menu is limited to 5 items
before it truncates into a folder-view. I use bookmarks *all* the time
so having to go across one extra step has really started to get to me. I
also mount a lot of network drives, so the drives section does the same.
If you're still not with me, here's a picture:

http://i.thepcspy.com/blog/20080626-ubuntu/menu.jpg

I can see the merits for doing this, but *only* if showing everything
would require the menu to have a scroll-bar. At the moment there's no
effort to even detect how many entries we could paint - **it's hard-
coded!**

Can I please suggest we temporarily boost the hard-coded number to 10,
release it and then come up with a better way of addressing the problem?

[Bug 269904] Re: Screen refresh problems with nvidia on intrepid

2008-09-24 Thread Oli
I'm still getting the problem, though I think it's happening less often
than before.

Most GTK+ things are redrawing fine now with the exception of Firefox
and webkit loading images (sometimes the image loads as black until I
either scroll it off the page and back on again, or force a whole-screen
refresh using Compiz' desktop cube effect)

I'm still getting a lot of issues with Qt apps - the most notable being
Amarok. It's easily reproducable here by selecting a menu and skimming
over all the entries. Some are left selected when they shouldn't be.

Background: I upgraded to Intrepid yesterday. Nearing the end of the
install there were a couple of "failed" upgrades. I remember one of
these was apparently update-manager, but I battled through and the
  upgrade finished.

When I restarted into Intrepid, I obviously needed to change my repos,
so loaded up Software Sources. Nothing loaded up and a crash
  notification popped up.

A couple of other Python apps are showing similar behavior. Gwibber
crashes in the same sort of way (blows up as soon as it hits
  gtk.gdk.threads_init)

  I've read through https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-
  properties/+bug/97122

- The title is the same but it has nothing to do with gtk.gdk.threads_init
+ The title is similar but it has nothing to do with gtk.gdk.threads_init
and the suggested fix in the thread (sudo dpkg --configure -a) does not
  help me. I don't think it's a duplicate.

If you need a full backtrace, you'll have to point me at some
instructions on how to trace python apps. I tried gdb already but it
didn't seem to attach properly. No idea what's going on.

Well that's annoying. Somebody has marked this as duplicate and I can't
*see* the other thread to check. Smooth.

Whoever set this as a duplicate, could you also make the thread this one
now points to a public one, or at least add me so I can see the status
of the bug?

Take care.

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2008-06-07 Thread Oli
Shlomi: Grow up.

Chase your issue across the community support in the forums, not on
unrelated threads in Launchpad. Proclaiming Ubuntu dead just because you
can't get your issues answered immediately isn't helping matters either.
