[Bug 1934510] Re: [MIR] fuse3 as a dependency of qemu 6.0 and GNOME apps

2022-03-27 Thread probono
Please also consider software that is not inside the Ubuntu
repositories, but users nonetheless want to run on Ubuntu systems. Such
software may still require fuse2. For example, pretty much every
AppImage in existence as of today.

I think it would be reasonable to announce that libfuse2 will be moved
out of main at a defined date in the future x years from now (or
something like that) so that the "outside world" can prepare for such an
event but not to "just do it" merely because the software inside the
Ubuntu repositories can handle such a move.

[Bug 1965636] Re: libfuse2 no longer included in jammy, required for AppImages

2022-03-27 Thread probono
Apparently this affects most if not all flavors of Ubuntu. Especially
the default flavor.

The AppImage format for distributing applications is centered around the
idea that a user can boot the Ubuntu Live ISO, download an application
in AppImage format, make it executable, and run it without having to
install anything.

Not having libfuse2 and fusermount on the Live ISO breaks this for all
existing AppImages out there.

AppImage tooling (the tools application authors use to produce AppImages
of their software) will have to be updated by the AppImage project, but
even once it is, it will take considerable time until all application
authors release updated AppImages of their software.

Hence, asking for a defined grace period until fuse2 gets removed from
the Ubuntu Live ISO.

[Bug 578045] Re: Upgrading packaged Ubuntu application unreasonably involves upgrading entire OS

2013-07-23 Thread probono
Please have a look at AppImageKit, which allows to package applications
for multiple distributions following the "1 app = 1 file" philosophy.
Since it needs no support from the distribution, it can run already
today on Fedora, Ubuntu and the likes. There are some example (32-bit)
AppImages at portablelinuxapps.org in case you want to try.

[Bug 202039] Re: Booting from USB fails on MacBook Pro 3,1

2009-08-02 Thread probono
Here is a solution that worked for me:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=7275427&postcount=762

If you place this (fat binary) file on your FAT formatted USB stick to
/EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.EFI
/EFI/BOOT/BOOTIA32.EFI
then when you insert the stick into an Intel Mac and press "Alt", an icon
called "EFI Boot" shows up and you can boot from this USB stick into GRUB2.

Place the following in /efi/boot/grub.cfg on your USB stick to boot
Ubuntu Live automatically:

# Timeout for menu
set timeout=0

# Set default boot entry as Entry 0
set default=0

# Entry 0 - Load Linux kernel
menuentry "Ubuntu Live" {
fakebios
search --set /casper/vmlinuz
linux /casper/vmlinuz boot=casper video=efifb agp=off show-cow noprompt --
debian-installer/language=de console-setup/layoutcode=de max_loop=32
initrd /casper/initrd.gz
boot
}

[Bug 296650] [NEW] casper-snapshot poorly documented

2008-11-10 Thread probono
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: casper

man casper-snapshot says:

-d, —device DEVICE
sets the device where the media which the snapshot/persistence file/partition
will be put. If it is not specified, a tmpfs will be used and linked to the
user's desktop to move it where it is needed.

casper-snapshot produces a casper-sn.cpio.gz - but what am I supposed to
do with it so that it is actually picked up by the Live USB system, used
during boot and resynced at each shutdown?

I have been trying to find out for a long time where on my Live USB
stick I am supposed to "move it", but I can't seem to figure out "where
it is needed".

Please clarify the man page and please actually test the casper-
sn.cpio.gz feature end-to-end in order to ensure that it actually works

Since the Live CD doesn't retain the contents of the Gnome keyring after

[Bug 269786] [NEW] When inserting a stick, no nautilus window should steal focus

2008-09-13 Thread probono
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usb-creator

As long as the tool is running, Nautilus should be prevented from
opening windows when a USB stick is inserted.

Currently, when one runs the tool and then inserts the target stick,
then Natuilus takes over and steals the focus.

liveusb takes care of this by calling the respective code that is already
present in ubiquity, see
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~probono/liveusb/main/annotate/11?file_id=gnomeautomount.py-20080521140641-6qy8a3a46kl4k01c-52

[Bug 269783] [NEW] If running from a live system, should not ask for Source disk image (.iso) or CD

2008-09-13 Thread probono
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usb-creator

One of the most common usage scenarios will be that an user runs the
Live CD and wants to convert it to a live USB system. In this case, usb-
creator should detect that it is running from a live system and should
NOT ask the user for a "Source disk image (.iso) or CD".

It should also transfer over the language and keyboard language from the
running live system to the live USB system created.

This is already implemented in liveusb,

[Bug 269785] [NEW] Wishlist: Integrate Flash as an option

2008-09-13 Thread probono
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usb-creator

This is a wishlist item:

In order to have a live system that can be used for real-world browsing
(including sites like YouTube; see Linus Torvalds' comment on this
topic) some users would like to have Adobe Flash on their system.

The liveusb tool includes a checkbox which, when checked, will download
and integrate Flash into the live USB system. The same could be applied
for other non-free but often-requested software as well.

[Bug 269036] Re: "How much space should be used" is always disabled

2008-09-13 Thread probono
How much space should be used can be determined by a smart algorithm
automatically for most users (e.g.: disk size - size of /casper - 100 MB
or something like that). So this slider could be optional for advanced
users (and be hidden in the GUI accordingly).

[Bug 202039] Re: Booting from USB fails on MacBook Pro 3,1

2008-05-14 Thread probono
One step closer on booting Ubuntu Live from USB on the Santa Rosa
MacBook Pro (MacBookPro3,1):

If you format the USB device with FAT16 and put the following file there,
exactly in this place and with this name
/efi/boot/bootx64.efi
then a reboot with the Alt key pressed *does* show the USB device as a bootable
device and there is a new icon in rEFIt for booting the /efi/boot/bootx64.efi.

In theory, we should be able to use any x86_64(!) EFI application as the
bootx64.efi file. In practice, I don't know whether there is a working
EFI application that can successfully boot Ubuntu from USB. I tried
64-bit ELILO from
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/elilo/elilo-3.8-x86_64.efi and I got an
elilo prompt when I selected the new "boot /efi/boot/bootx64.efi from
usb" entry in rEFIt.

At this prompt, I can enter exactly 1 character (which is shown on the
screen), but then the keyboard freezes.

When I add a /efi/boot/elilo.conf file and specify a kernel and initrd
to load, then elilo does try to load them. So elilo can definitely read
from USB via EFI on the MBP. However, it then displays an error message
mentioning "system.c" for a millisecond and then immediately reboots.

grub-efi is another EFI boot loader, but apparently grub-mkimage only
creates an 32-bit efi file (even on 64-bit Ubuntu) whereas the MBP3,1
needs a x86_64 binary.

Any EFI/elilo experts here?

[Bug 202050] [NEW] [Hardy] Snapshots in casper/ are ignored

2008-03-13 Thread probono
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: casper

This is on Ubuntu 8.04 "Hardy Heron" - Alpha i386 (20080306.1):

I prepared a casper-sn.cpio.gz and put it into the casper/ directory

"persistent" to my kernel options.

Now I would expect casper to merge the contents of casper-sn.cpio.gz
into my live filesystem, but that is not the case. It appears to be
totally ignored.

As I was unable to locate any precise information on how to use the
casper-sn and casper-home feature on a Ubuntu system, I would also
appreciate any hints as to how this is supposed to work on Ubuntu.
Please provide detailed step-by-step instructions so that I can follow

[Bug 201470] [NEW] Should be a way to mount silently (no desktop icon, no window opening)

2008-03-12 Thread probono
Public bug reported:

Consider this operation (done on a stock Hardy Live CD):

mkdir -p ~/.tmp/mnt
sudo apt-get install fuseiso # need to use fuseiso since loop-mounting seems
broken on Live CD
fuseiso Desktop/test.iso ~/.tmp/mnt/

In Hardy (unlike earlier versions), this adds an icon to the desktop and
opens a Nautilus popup window, which I do *not* want.

I hear that it is supposed to be this way ONLY if you use a mount point
inside /media - but unfortunately that is not the case.

Please add a mount option to mount "silently", like
mount -o donotshow

Another option would be that if the mount point starts with a dot, then
the volume is mounted without adding an icon to the desktop and without
opening a Nautilus popup window.

(Globally disabling desktop icons and opening windows is *not* an
option, i need a way to do this per mount point.)

Use case:
The klik project (klikclient.googlecode.com) packages individual applications
inside ISO files. Each time you launch an application, an ISO is silently
mounted, from which the application then runs. This worked fine until now, but
now in Hardy the Nautilus popup windows and desktop icons are very confusing.
There should be a way for klik to specify that no such icons and windows are
opened.

[Bug 61463] Re: Script that are using bash could be broken with the new symlink

2007-01-03 Thread probono
Please revert to bash.

Regardless whether they are "right" or not - many script developers have
silently assumed that scripts starting with #!/bin/sh is executed by
bash.

An operating system such as Ubuntu is supposed to be a dependable
platform for 3rd party applications to run on top of it. And since there
are many (legacy) applications out there that assume that scripts
starting with #!/bin/sh is executed by bash, Ubuntu "breaks" those by
switching away from the "de-facto standard".

Please consider the situation of a non-technical end user who doesn't
care whose fault it is that his app doesn't work as expected.

It is changes like this that make Ubuntu less likely to solve bug #1.

2007-01-03 Thread probono
sparr, it is not (only) about packages that are part of Ubuntu. It is
also about software that came from the Internet or on CD-ROM from third
parties. Software that (despite breaking the rules) used to work
flawless, and that gives the non-technical end user errors now.

This bugreport is about a mindset: It is about not touching things that
might result in other things (including the world outside Ubuntu) to
break.

[Bug 59779] Re: Loop-mount doesn't work on Live CD (Casper)

2006-09-20 Thread probono
So who do we have to ask to use -DSUPPORT_BROKEN_LOSETUP at compile
time?

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: casper
+ Binary package hint: casper unionfs unionfs-utils linux-image

Boot from Live CD (Casper), and try to loop-mount an image, e.g., an ISO
or cramfs file. You will get an error message.

- (This is annoying me very much since it prevents me from using
- klik.atekon.de software with the Ubuntu live CD.)

[Bug 59779] Re: [Bug 59779] Re: Loop-mount doesn't work on Live CD (Casper)

2006-09-12 Thread probono
Thanks for your quick response. The error message is "ioctl:
LOOP_SET_FD: Invalid argument". Please find below a short way for
reproducing the error. Please note that this error only occurs if
Ubuntu is running from the Live CD, and that is not limited to cramfs
alone, but seems to be a more general issue with loop-mounting on the
Live CD.

# create some test data
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ mkdir test
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ touch test/testfile

# make a cramfs image
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ mkfs.cramfs test/ test.cram
warning: gids truncated to 8 bits. (This may be a security concern.)

# try to loop-mount the cramfs image
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo mkdir /media/cram
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo mount test.cram /media/cram/ -o loop
ioctl: LOOP_SET_FD: Invalid argument

[Bug 59779] Loop-mount doesn't work on Live CD (Casper)

2006-09-10 Thread probono
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: casper

Boot from Live CD (Casper), and try to loop-mount an image, e.g., an ISO
or cramfs file. You will get an error message.

(This is annoying me very much since it prevents me from using
klik.atekon.de software with the Ubuntu live CD.)

** Affects: casper (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Untriaged
 Status: Unconfirmed
