[Bug 463685] Re: FM801 sound chips doesn't play nice songs
I created several audio files: 2646710 2010-03-27 22:05 test26.wav 2616876 2010-03-27 22:15 test26_u1004.wav 3885100 2010-03-28 20:20 test26_u0910.wav 5648428 2010-03-27 22:28 test26_u0804.wav 5685324 2010-03-28 18:29 test26_vl060.wav 5546060 2010-03-28 18:36 test26_win_hp.wav 5967948 2010-03-28 19:44 test26_win2k.wav test26.wav is audio file created in Audacity; it has length 30s and contains silence, sine 440Hz and chirp from 220Hz to 8800Hz. I played this file in several OS and recorded audio at different PC. u0804, u0910 and u1004 are U10.04 (OK) U09.10 (very bad) and U10.04 (bad), win2k is sound played under Win2k. vl060 is Vector Linux 6.0. win_hp is played under windows but different HW with different sound card; only for a reference. U8.04 plays the best sound, even better than W2k (difference is visible in audio analyser, like Audacity). Sample from U10.04 clearly demonstrates that some buffers are lost. ** Attachment added: FM801 audio files http://launchpadlibrarian.net/42300103/fm801_test26.tar.bz2 -- FM801 sound chips doesn't play nice songs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/463685 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 463674] Re: My audio HW is broken in U9.10
Retested in U10.04 i386 beta. My sound card still cannot play nice songs. I hear sound but it is not good, like buffers are played in random order or some buffers are lost. In the case you will give me some reference sound file, I can play it and record my audio output for your analyze in Audacity or similar tool. I think good test file could be: 1) sine wave of well define frequency - to test continuity and timing/frequency 2) sine wave of increasing frequency - to see if buffers are lost or order of buffer is changed Don't you miss a suite to test audio in Ubuntu?? [Bug 538710] [NEW] zsync doesn't prevent timestamp of downloaded file
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: zsync Ubuntu 9.10 i386, zsync 0.6 ISSUE: When file is downloaded with zsync, timestamp is set to the time when download was finished, timestamp at HTTP server is ignored. I can compare with WGET that keeps timestamp as reported by HTTP server. [Bug 538717] [NEW] zsync doesn't check metafile during download
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: zsync Ubuntu 9.10 i386, zsync 0.6 DESCRIPTION zsync doesn't check if the downloaded file is zsync metafile. The whole metafile is downloaded and after that it is parsed. In normal situation, metafile is small but unexperienced user can call zsync with wrong file (like DVD/CD image) and in this case it is a problem as zsync dowloads hundred of megabytes to find that all data are useless... DEMO try this: $ zsync http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/lucid-alternate-i386.iso zsync downloaded about 650MB of data to find that unexperienced user called it with wrong URL (URL of ISO file was entered, not URL of ZSYNC file). 650MB of data was downloaded to be useless... Correct command is this one (small change in URL only...): $ zsync http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/lucid-alternate-i386.iso.zsync Smart (user friendly) zsync knows that most metadata files are small and that it can check header if the file at command line is really zsync file. From my point of view, zsync should download about 1kB (or 10kB, etc) of the file first, check header and continue with download only in the case that file is OK (is at roght version, etc). zsync file has fixed structure, it should be easy to parse header to check if file is zsync metadata file. Example of zsync metafile (http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current /lucid-alternate-i386.iso.zsync), header: zsync: 0.5 Filename: lucid-alternate-i386.iso Blocksize: 4096 Length: 673048576 Hash-Lengths: 2,3,5 URL: lucid-alternate-i386.iso SHA-1: 9fd2e7fa32bdfcf3aebcb5e642db34cc99a825cd BINARY DATA ARE HERE @ ** Affects: zsync (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- zsync doesn't check metafile during download https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/538717 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 538717] Re: zsync doesn't check metafile during download
You don't need to download a file from HTTP server, zsync file can be stored locally. When the file is stored locally you can easily test this issue but you will not see how long zsync needs to get file from HTTP server before it fails. Demo with local file: $ ls -l lucid-alternate-i386.iso* -rw--- 1 psl psl 673048576 2010-03-14 13:33 lucid-alternate-i386.iso -rw-r--r-- 1 psl psl 1314731 2010-03-14 08:39 lucid-alternate-i386.iso.zsync $ zsync lucid-alternate-i386.iso Bad line - not a zsync file? Correct command is this one: $ # wget http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/lucid-alternate-i386.iso.zsync $ zsync lucid-alternate-i386.iso.zsync My point is that zsync could verify if it is downloading correct metafile ASAP, to report Bad line - not a zsync file? error ASAP, not after downloaded MB or GB of data... Alternatively, it should store downloaded data to the filesystem (zsync degraded to to wget). Exampe, zsync with wrong URL (file is small, about 2MB): $ zsync http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/lucid-alternate-i386.template 100.0% 469.4 kBps DONE Bad line - not a zsync file? [Bug 412413] Re: zsync 32bit cannot download DVD
I cannot repeat the issue you reported. I downloaded 4 DVD of lucid without any problem at 32-bit system with U9.10. But I have one explanation for your trouble. These DVD images are snapshosts and are changed often.I guess your lucid-dvd-amd64.iso changed at server before you finished download. As a result, zsync metadata you get at the start of download process doesn't match iso image at server when you was finishing the downloadand zsync client give up with abort message. II think that you can start your zsync process again; in this case, zsync client will use iso image you already downloaded as a seed and will update it with changes. Can you confirm this? [Bug 477434] [NEW] zsync doesn't work optimaly with local files (and this can be improved)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: zsync zsync 0.6, Ubuntu 9.10 i386. # zsync -V zsync v0.6 (compiled Nov 6 2009 05:52:12) By Colin Phipps c...@moria.org.uk Published under the Artistic License v2, see the COPYING file for details. I believe, zsync can be improved in work with local files (before it tries to get data from HTTP server). Small changes to zsync can speed up the process. First, I want to show a case, when zsync can finish fast but it doesn't recognize the situation and looks for a data those are not needed. This fix should be easy. Later I will show you on other examples what can be done to improve zsync. zsync has 100% of data but it reads another seed file. zsync doesn't check that target reached 100%: TEST A) # ls -l -rw--- 1 root root 730136576 2009-11-07 13:29 ubuntu-9.10-alternate-amd64.iso -rw--- 1 root root 723068928 2009-11-07 12:31 ubuntu-9.10-alternate-i386.iso # mv ubuntu-9.10-alternate-amd64.iso ubuntu-9.10-alternate-amd64.iso.100 # zsync -i ubuntu-9.10-alternate-amd64.iso.100 http://server/zsync/ubuntu-9.10-alternate-amd64.iso.zsync Read ubuntu-9.10-alternate-amd64.iso.100. Target 100.0% complete. Read ubuntu-9.10-alternate-i386.iso. Target 100.0% complete. used 730136576 local, fetched 0 This scenario shows that zsync have 100% of target after reading file ubuntu-9.10-alternate-amd64.iso.100 but it ignores the fact that it can finish and reads next file, ubuntu-9.10-alternate-i386.iso. This is special case, easy to reproduce and to fix. I filtered zsync output to important messages only and I fetch data from http server at local LAN. Before I will describe more tricky scenario, I will do some time measurement. I assume that when zsync has more data for target, it process seed file faster (less lookups for missing blocks). TEST B) # time zsync -i ubuntu-9.10-alternate-amd64.iso.100 -i ubuntu-9.10-alternate-i386.iso http://server/zsync/ubuntu-9.10-alternate-amd64.iso.zsync Read ubuntu-9.10-alternate-amd64.iso.100. Target 100.0% complete. Read ubuntu-9.10-alternate-i386.iso. Target 100.0% complete. used 730136576 local, fetched 0 real1m41.726s user0m23.885s sys 0m4.456s TEST C) # time zsync -i ubuntu-9.10-alternate-i386.iso -i ubuntu-9.10-alternate-amd64.iso.100 http://nas/zsync/ubuntu-9.10-alternate-amd64.iso.zsync Read ubuntu-9.10-alternate-i386.iso. Target 37.9% complete. Read ubuntu-9.10-alternate-amd64.iso.100. Target 100.0% complete. used 730136576 local, fetched 0 real2m41.853s user0m57.672s sys 0m6.212s Test case B and C have the same result, ISO file can be build from local sources (no data from HTTP server are needed). Both TEST cases work with the same input files. Test C finished about 1 minute faster than test B. Order of files processed by ZSYNC is important! It is better to process file with more useful information first. I think that we can guess what file is important for us and has to be processed with higher priority. More complex example, zsync processed some data already but it was interrupted before it finished the job (.part file left on the disk). And we have older version of the file too. TEST D) # ls -l -rw--- 1 root root 671686656 2009-11-07 02:36 ubuntu-9.10-server-i386.iso -rw--- 1 root root 723070976 2009-11-07 12:25 ubuntu-9.10-alternate-i386.iso.part -rw--- 1 root root 723068928 2009-11-07 12:31 ubuntu-9.10-alternate-i386.iso # zsync -i ubuntu-9.10-server-i386.iso http://server/zsync/ubuntu-9.10-alternate-i386.iso.zsync Read ubuntu-9.10-server-i386.iso. Target 45.3% complete. Read ubuntu-9.10-alternate-i386.iso. Target 100.0% complete. Read ubuntu-9.10-alternate-i386.iso.part. Target 100.0% complete. used 723070976 local, fetched 0 Test D is here to show you order of files processed by zsync: 1) read input files defined by user (-i file; ubuntu-9.10-server-i386.iso) 2) read target file (when it exists; ubuntu-9.10-alternate-i386.iso) 3) read .part file (when it exists; ubuntu-9.10-alternate-i386.iso.part) My suggestion is to change zsync to process input files in this order: 1) Is there .part file? Process it! (previous run of zsync was interrupted, useful blocks should be in .part file already) 2) Is there target file? Process it! (it is possible that we already have 100% target) 3) read files defined by user (-i file) One more notice to .part file. Maybe that zsync can process this file faster as blocks should be already aligned at correct positions, it doesn't need to search for blocks in the way like it works with other files. Experienced user can always put .part file with -i switch when it needs to process the file in standard way. ** Affects: zsync (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- zsync doesn't work optimaly with local files (and this can be improved) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/477434 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 477551] [NEW] rcksum-xxxxxx temporay files left on disk by zsync
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: zsync zsync 0.6, Ubuntu 9.10 i386 # zsync -V zsync v0.6 (compiled Nov 6 2009 05:52:12) By Colin Phipps c...@moria.org.uk Published under the Artistic License v2, see the COPYING file for details. DESCRIPTION: zsync creates temporary files rcksum-xx during read of seed files to the current directory. When zsync is interrupted during this stage (like CTRL-C), temporary file is left on the disk. I think, this file is useless and zsync doesn't use it on next run; it creates new temporary file. I tested the fix under Ubuntu 9.10 i386 and fix looks OK. I can replicate the issue at my local LAN too. It is related to heavy traffic or packet lost/retransmissions. In this example, I started download in time when other process was using my server. [Bug 421044] [NEW] zsyncmake doesn't check blocksize parameter well
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: zsync Ubuntu 8.04, i386 zsync 0.5 zsyncmake is utility to create files with metadata information for zsync client. It has several parameter, one of them is blocksize, -b. Blocksize value has to be power of 2; this is checked by zsyncmake; exmaple: # zsyncmake -b 2000 blocksize must be a power of 2 (512, 1024, 2048, ...) There is other limit, the largest blocksize possible; limited by zsync client design. This value is not checked and zsyncmake utility can create zsync file that cannot be processed by client. For example, blocksize 65536 is power by 2 but too big to be processed by zsync client. Two issues here: 1) zsync client doesn't exit with error when it get zsync file with blocksize bigger that it can process (by sw design limits). When client get file with big blocksize it finish in some never-ending loop... The value in zsync file has to be checked by zsync client. 2) zsyncmake doesn't check blocksize well and warn user that he creates file that cannot be used by zsync client as blocksize is too big. I think the same could be written about minimum value of blocksize. I tested values of blocksize 1024, 2048, 4096, 8096 and 16384, these are working well. blocksize value 32768 is too big. About blocksize from zsyncmake man page: -b blocksize Specify the blocksize to the underlying rsync algorithm. A smaller blocksize may be more efficient for files where there are likely to be lots of small, scattered changes between down‐ loads; a larger blocksize is more efficient for files with fewer or less scattered changes. This blocksize must be a power of two. If not specified, zsyncmake chooses one which it thinks is best for this file (currently either 2048 or 4096 depending on file size) - so normally you should not need to override the default. ** Affects: zsync (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- zsyncmake doesn't check blocksize parameter well https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/421044 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 421044] Re: zsyncmake doesn't check blocksize parameter well
I tested small values of blocksize, like 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and it doesn't make serious problem to zsync client. Technical problem is that when blocksize is 8, the zsync file size is similar to original file, when blocksize is 4, zsync file is double in size compared to original file, etc. It doesn't make sense to create files with blocksize smaller than 16 and this should be checked by zsyncmake utility. When blocksize parameter is 0, default value of blocksize (2048) is used. I modified one zsync file to have blocksize 100 in the header; this is checked by the zsync client and it give up. I like it... $ zsync http://server/zsync/missing.iso.100.zsync 100.0% 0.0 kBps DONE nonsensical blocksize 100 The same should happen when value greater than 16384 is found in the zsync file header. -- zsyncmake doesn't check blocksize parameter well https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/421044 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 412413] Re: zsync cannot download DVD image
I retested with Ubuntu 9.04 amd64 and zsync 0.5. I can download DVD image in 64-bit Linux, bug is isoloated to 32-bit code. Thisis good news... I tried to generate zsync file for DVD ISO image under Ubuntu 9.04 386 and Ubuntu 9.04 amd64 and I get the same file in both cases. This is great. My conlusison is that only zsync client in 32-bit Linux has some bug that limits it use to some small ISO images (CD is OK, DVD is too big). -- zsync cannot download DVD image https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/412413 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 412413] [NEW] zsync cannot download DVD image
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: zsync Ubuntu 9.04 i386, zsync 0.5 zsync cannot download DVD image of Ubuntu (karmic-dvd-i386.iso). DVD image has size 4355870720 but zsync downloads only 2147483647 bytes. Problem could be related to 32-bit Ubuntu I run, DVD size is greater than 2^31. I think rsync doesn't have similar limitation, I can download the same DVD image with rsync at 32-bit Linux. To test it, try command like this one: # zsync http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/dvd/current/karmic-dvd-i386.iso.zsync In the case that zsync has this limit by design, it should warn the user that it cannot download such huge file and give up. Better way is to fix zsync to don't have such limit... ** Affects: zsync (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- zsync cannot download DVD image https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/412413 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
