[Bug 1263702] [NEW] Latest version is using deprecated code

2013-12-23 Thread psypher
Public bug reported:

The latest version 2.3 of python-boto is not the same version as the pip
or github version and is using deprecated code. On an Ubuntu Raring EC2
AMI with python-boto preinstalled I am unable to run newer boto commands
from version 2.21 like conn.get_all_reservations which does not exists
in the Ubuntu packaged version but does exists in the github and pip
version.

How is python-boto able to be version 2.3 when it's not the latest
version of the actual SDK which is at 2.21??

[Bug 1010981] Re: Computer does not power off when attempting to shut down by any route.

2013-08-17 Thread psypher
I have this issue on 13.04 on a Dell XPS L701X. Have to hard shutdown
the PC and then the next time it boots up it has to do a disk check on a
healthy drive. Does it everytime I start up and I am worried that there
is going to be DATA corruption soon.

[Bug 782953] Re: Software Center doesn't detect changes in sources until update-apt-xapian-index is ran by cron

2013-05-14 Thread psypher
Unfortunately I do not have a fix, I am just a power user not a
developer. But the issue seems simple to me as I don't get the
complexity of adding a condition: if one of the sources boxes has been
ticked then gksudo apt-get update gets run when the close button is
pressed.

or just as simple, add a button next to revert:Update Changes which
also runs gksudo apt-get update.

The reason why I called this out is that this bug was logged 2 years
ago, with multiple duplicates associated to it and not assigned to
anyone.

This issue is trivial enough if you are comfortable with the command
line. But for an OS thats supposed to easy and have the average user in
mind, having them choose a software source and then trying to install an
app from that source and not finding that app just because the sources
were not downloaded is an extremely bad user experience.

Minor user issues like this (of which there are many) detract from the
rest of the polish being done on Ubuntu. But the attitude of just
letting them slip by and languish for years does not help the user's
experience or Ubuntu/Canonical's image.

I take the time to log issues and chase them up and that's the level of
help I can provide. But from this interaction I don't even see the point
of logging user bugs anymore.

[Bug 1177978] [NEW] Unable to install or remove any nvidia drivers via Software Sources or apt.

2013-05-08 Thread psypher
Public bug reported:

 package nvidia-304 304.88-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade:
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status
1

I get these errors when trying to install or remove any of the nvidia
listed drivers. Since I cannot remove the driver I have to reinstalll to
get it gone. This would be my 5'th time reinstalling. I have tried all
the drivers. If there is a better way to remove the driver please let me
know so I can help test.

I am running a Dell XPS L701x
VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF106M [GeForce GT 445M]

I really need to run the Nvidia driver. Nouveau does not cut it and
causes the laptop to run VERY hot. Please let me know if I need to
provide any more info.

[Bug 1016294] Re: ia32-libs-multiarch but it is not installable

2013-02-13 Thread psypher
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386 is no longer supported in newer
versions of Ubuntu and does not work just like Ubuntu Warrior said:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dpkg/+question/221647
http://lists.linaro.org/pipermail/linaro-dev/2012-May/012224.html

But Clement says that file is not longer being used either and we must
use: /var/lib/dpkg/arch.

I have amended that file as per Clement and updated and still this issue
persists:

sudo apt-get install ia32-libs-multiarch
Package ia32-libs-multiarch is not available, but is referred to by another
package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

E: Package 'ia32-libs-multiarch' has no installation candidate

So what else can we do?

[Bug 986722] Re: Can't browse MTP device (Galaxy Nexus)

2012-08-30 Thread psypher
Can this bug please be assigned and attended to, it is clearly a big
issue for many with 279 people being affected @ bug 903422 and 44 people
so far on this bug.

My nexus was mounting in Nautilus fine up to the last update a couple of
days ago.

This shouldn't be an issue at all and canonical should make big efforts
to get all android devices full supported in Ubuntu!

This bug is not fixed. My Nexus was working 100% in Nautilus up until
the last update I did a couple of days ago and now all get it this error
when connecting it:

org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible
causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message
bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the

[Bug 1044052] [NEW] Software Centre does run a list update after adding new sources

2012-08-30 Thread psypher
Public bug reported:

This bug is based on the below question. It has been around for a while.
When you add a new software source like partner repos there is no force
apt-get update or pop-up asking you to update the package list. So the
user goes back to software list and his packages are not there.

Running apt-get update solves the problem, but it shouldn't have to be
done. Only way to get the packages updated via gui is to either install
synaptic or hit dash and launch software updater, neither of those to
options should have to be done.

As stated in the documentation, mention below, there should be a dialog
to update the packages. Please could this dialog be replaced.

I added a new repository to my apt sources list using the Ubuntu Software
Centre.
But I didn't found how to update the list.
The package on that new repo didn't appear on the searches.

I had to go to the terminal and issue the apt-get update in order to
find and install the package.

Reading the Ubuntu documentation I found:

«Adding Ubuntu Software Repositories

(...)

Select Close to save your changes. A dialog box should appear, asking
whether you'd like to update the list of repositories. Select Reload
to update the list.»

This didn't happened! The dialog box didn't open.

The repo I added was:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/lion-simba/bino-mt/ubuntu YOUR_UBUNTU_VERSION_HERE
main

I'm using 11.10

[Bug 978807] Re: 'Cypress Trackpad' incorrectly detected as 'ImPS/2 Generic Wheel Mouse' in 'Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook''

2012-06-21 Thread psypher
Hi Kamal,

kernel looks right:
 3.2.0-26-generic #41+kamal2~DellXPS-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jun 20 20:25:04 UTC 2012
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I only created the 10-evdev.conf file and made modifications to the
InputClass so that we could simulate scrolling by pressing and holding
right click and then scrolling. No other modifications made.

I just deleted the 10-evdev.conf file completely and rebooted. Now
touchpad works again. So far tapping and double tapping works, no need
to actually physically click, yay. Middle mouse button paste works
(using both keys), double yay. But pinch and zoom and 2 finger scrolling
not working at all. :(

CLOSE Almost there!

@Kamal,

Does your pinch and zoom work?

I got 2 finger scrolling to work!! Forgot that I actually had to turn it
on in mouse settings on the touchpad tab.

Also when I accidentally touched 3 fingers the unity grab handles
overlay popped up but was not adjustable.

Thanks otherwise for all the help. The laptop is pretty much up and
running 100%. Only thing not working now is 3g USB dongles. But I will
log that separately. Just wondering if anyone else has the same issue as
the same USB dongle works fine on my other Dell with same Ubuntu. modem-

[Bug 862430] Re: window flicker for a short time after switching workspaces

2012-06-11 Thread psypher
HI All,

I can confirm as well that the flicker issue is fixed. Another old bug
that I logged about it https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz-
core/+bug/937700). But I too have a similar issue as Achim. This issue
has actually been around for a while, hoping it was related to the
flicker issue. When I try move and app to a different desktop, while in
Expo mode, the mouse and the app moves but the app does not move in
relation to the mouse. For instance moving the mouse 5cm will move the
app 10cm in the same direction. Doesn't happen all the time, kind of
like Achim, when I mouse the mouse quickly. This same issue also occurs
with snapped windows while not in expo mode. I logged a bug about this
quite some time ago
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/937665)

Is this related? If not how do i get attention to this issue on my bug
9=937665 as no actions have happened in 3 months?

Thanks so much for fixing the flicker, made Ubuntu REALLY ugly and not
recommendable at all.

[Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity menus

2012-05-22 Thread psypher
I suggested the exact same thing due to this other bug:
New windows are moved to front but don't take focus
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/781931/comments/31

TOO MUCH CLICKING!

Apps and menus should follow mouse over focus. Will fix many issues.

I use fullscreen apps a lot. This is how I would prefer it:

Default:
Fullscreen apps should always show global menus. Do not hide.
Minimized apps should have the menus locally integrated, less distance to
travel to get to menu!

Optional:
Hide global menus
non-locally integrated menus on minimized apps
The highest foreground app must by default grab focus
Any app you move your mouse over must get Menu focus, don't bring to
foreground though! interacting with the focused app will bring it to
foreground, like keyboard input.

Love unity and all the features. But the focus and global menu thing is a bit
annoying. Some refinement needed.

[Bug 781931] Re: New windows are moved to front but don't take focus

2012-05-03 Thread psypher
Id like to suggest a solution.

I find that since Unity and global menus I tend to do a lot of clicking
on the app somewhere to gain focus then activate the correct global
menu. I seem to be clicking a lot more than before. Also when you close
an app the next app below does not have focus either. Click on it again
and now you have focus. Why not auto focus to the below app?

Could we instead have an option to have windows follow mouse focus? It
solves a few problems:

Nautilus opens and has focus under your mouse
closed apps immediately give background apps focus
any app you move your mouse to activates the desired global menu and hud

It's already intuitive as I often have a terminal window in the
foreground with scrollable text in a window below. But just mouse over
the background app and scroll wheel scrolls the text. I also use the
mouse focus option in terminator, wherever the mouse is is where the
focus is.

Thoughts?

[Bug 874241] Re: Wrong resolutions in lightdm login screen when using external monitor connected to laptop

2012-05-02 Thread psypher
Yeah I happened to notice the exact same thing today. I have REALLY
unstable sessions when having dual monitors plugged in. Either I
randomly loose dual monitor setup
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/921540) as well as sometimes having my
desktop crash when connecting the screen in a live desktop session
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/926637). Neither of those bugs getting
any attention btw.

Anyway so to avoid at least one of those bugs, and the frequent loss of
data, I logged out yesterday and connected the monitor. To my surprise I
could see that cool new feature when only one screen has the login
screen and the other has the ubuntu logo. Moving my mouse between the
screens switches the login screen to the focused screen. If this works
then what is not working during boot?

Also does everyone else who's experiencing this bug also have NO boot
splash just a completely corrupted purply screen?

[Bug 991845] [NEW] Empathy on 12.04, some MSN users cannot see me online at all, one way conversations

2012-04-30 Thread psypher
Public bug reported:

I am unable to communicate with some MSN users. They constantly see me
as offline despite being online and chatting to user users. I can see
them online and send messages to them and they can see those messages.
But nothing replies back from them on my side. I am offline to them no
matter what.

The Windows client on that side that cannot see me is: v2011
15.4.3538.513

Chatting MSN clients has been a problem for me on linux for a very long
time now. Chatting and adding new users is just not stable enough. Since
MSN is now using open standards it's time for these bugs to be squashed.
It's very annoying when you are trying to use MSN to communicate with
clients and colleagues on other platforms and have half your
conversation not arrive, not being able to add new users or your side
being offline.

Thanks

[Bug 933495] Re: gstreamer unmet dependencies

2012-04-16 Thread psypher
I have re-installed precise on 2 different PC's and this issue has not
re-occured. The codec app did pop up BEFORE I installed ubuntu-
restricted-extras. I think I tried to go with what the default options
were ticked and again had these above mentioned errors.

But after I installed restricted extras I am now able to play all the
files I am trying to play. Not sure if this can be closed though. I want
to re-install again and see what that error was.

[Bug 963862] Re: The keyring login doesn't display any keys or saved passwords.

2012-04-05 Thread psypher
This issue is half fixed. Please see my attached video. The issues seen
only happens when i first expand the list view my keys, collapse it and
try search for something. When I move my mouse over the list you can see
how they randomly unhide and hide. Does not happen when i expand first
and then search.

When you see blurred keys those are my actual keys blurred for privacy

[Bug 969233] [NEW] 12.04 - terminal apps become inaccesible when snapped to the bottom half of the screen one 2nd monitor

2012-03-30 Thread psypher
Public bug reported:

The following problem occurs when performing these steps and conditions:

multi-monitor setup with primary screen on left with resolution of
1920x1080 and secondary screen on right with resolution of 1600x900:

open terminal app, either terminator or gnome-terminal using either screens
launcher
snap window to bottom half of screen using ctrl-alt-2
at this point terminal app looks like it has foreground focus.
click on terminal app, immediately it looses foreground focus and you end up
with having the terminal open but clicking on whatever is below it, whether
it's the desktop or an application below it. you can't type or click anywhere
on the app.

To gain access to the window as a workaround I can try move to another
desktop and back again but causes some other strange issues. opening a
new app and playing with different apps focus seems to eventually jog
the terminal back into use.

I have attached a video of this, also note that when i do move to
another desktop and back again the window appears on a different
monitor. when i try grab that app with alt, left click and hold the app,
it essentially disappears off the screen as there is an issue with where
the relative location of the app is. I have logged a similar issue like
this here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/937665
but so far no-one has attended to it.

Note due to the resolution size totem won't play the video but despite
vlc complaining it does play it in the end

Hi All,

Any update on this bug. I have upgraded to beta 2 and still occurring. I
can confirm that right clicking on the text does provide the correct
menu and does not deselect all the files.

Thanks

[Bug 912446] Re: Allow an independent context menu

2012-03-30 Thread psypher
I get why you would have contextually relevant menus, not a bad feature. But I
would like to suggest that a simple compromise be this:
if you have selected files, while holding ctrl or shift and right click
anywhere in the window, then the correct menu for selected files should appear.
otherwise if you right click in any empty space that context menu appears.

It is really frustrating to loose a bunch of files selected by right
clicking on an empty space. An empty space you have been clicking on for
the last 10 years. on all kinds of OS's. it's the expected behavior.

But what i also have to say is. For a long time I have wished for the
feature that I can create a new folder or file without having scroll
down and find empty space. That I like. But please just add, if files
are selected and ctrl or shift is down, bring up copy.

[Bug 954831] Re: 12.04 systray crashes randomly

2012-03-27 Thread psypher
Unfortunately no, it seems to be completely random. I don't notice that
it's gone until I need to use it.

Yesterday it occurred after I experienced this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/921540.

I will try and see if it happens again after that bug messes up my
monitor setup. Nothing seems to help to get the systray back up and
running other than logging out and in again. Just running unity to
restart unity messes my screen up so bad I cannot use the desktop at all
the apps are scattered all over the place with no window decorations.

Sebastian,

With regards to my issue of my multi monitor setup breaking and

gnome-session? I am not sure under what to log it and what info to
provide, as the ONLY errors that I receive, when this happens, in my

I ran: tail -f /var/log/*.log when i logged in and used the desktop until
the setup broke and these were the only errors logged.

Where do I go from here, this has been ongoing since the day 12.04
started development and I'm worried that this is an unknown bug that is
not getting attended to. My original bug 921540 was marked as duplicate
of this bug yet none of my errors point to gsd crashing.

[Bug 921540] Re: Multimonitor setup breaks and reverts to mirror setup randomly and while watching youtube videos

2012-03-26 Thread psypher
This bug is not a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source

Please could this be investigated further as this has been occurring
since 12.04 started development.

These are the errors that pop up when the setup breaks:

@Sebastien

Thanks, I have updated my original bug to reflect the extra info and
that it's not a duplicate of this bug. Would you be able to confirm that
I have supplied all the required info? I would really like to get this
bug fixed asap, before stable release, as it detracts from all the hard
work being done on multi monitor setups and is quite annoying. I am a
power user of multiple monitors and having to fix the setup over and
over every day is quite frustrating.

Thanks

I had to remove the PPA after I installed updates today. Broke unity
completely, would not load it. I logged a separate bug about it as I
thought it was just Unity. But after removing your PPA Unity started
working again. I didn't get much chance test the changes you requested.
Although before I updated today I did check once and there seemed to be
a slight improvement.

Here is the details of the other bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/962075

Thanks

[Bug 956934] Re: 12.04 Unity Video Lense uses up all disk IO when indexing

2012-03-19 Thread psypher
I have been using it over the weekend, and the problem actually seems
worse. process now runs continuously as soon as it's activated. not at
98% disk IO but at least 50%.

May I ask what it's doing? Shouldn't it take a few seconds to just scan
all the filenames and index? Looking at how much disk IO it consumes,
seems like it's reading the entire video file, over and over.

Has there been any progress with this issue. ctrl alt 4 and 6 still does
nothing, only way to set an app to half screen is to drag it to the left
or right.

Thanks I have fixed it.

HIGHLY disappointing that despite not ONE person here saying they are
happy losing that functionality yet still an extremely useful feature
which worked fine in the past is not working anymore.

I don't get the logic...

[Bug 956934] [NEW] 12.04 Unity Video Lense uses up all disk IO when indexing

2012-03-16 Thread psypher
Public bug reported:

This issue occurs upon boot and when attempting to open the Unity video
lens.

The process: python /usr/lib/unity-lens-video/unity-lens-video uses all
available disk IO causing full system performance decrease and
application hangs (grey outs). 98-99% IO while monitoring with IOTOP.
This happens for about 5 minutes on boot without clicking on the lens
and once that has completed it starts to happen again when you click on
the lens. The lens does not even work during this long process.

This is most likely exasperated by the widely experienced kernel disk IO
and scheduling bug which has been ongoing for some time now. Some
improvements have been made but I'm not sure if they have all been
imported into the latest stable Precise kernels.

I suggest that the video lens should not be installed by default as
normal users will not understand why their PC is freezing for no reason.

Can anyone else confirm this issue or is it specific to my PC and amount
of files.

Takes about 5-10 minutes for the system to become usable again. Then the
Video lens once again provides search results.

[Bug 870404] Re: When navigating Dash by keyboard, sometimes titles with no function are incorrectly focused

2012-03-10 Thread psypher
I agree, there was a point when it was a bug and pressing down once did
not indicate where the cursor is, but for a while now it has highlighted
the Applications bar.

The problem with your mockup comes in when you have multiple programs
found that require to be expanded. You can't have the applications
expand where files are, it must be kept separate.

I have a very simple solution to this problem.

Navigate application and file icons with the arrow keys and navigate to
the title bars with TAB. It's already cycling through them when you hit
tab, so why not just disable arrow keys from navigating to the title
bars?

So type f in the dash, whole bunch of apps, files and music comes up.
one arrow key down takes you to the first found application, another
down arrow takes you to the first found file, next down arrow takes you
to the first found song.

Similarly, typing f in the dash and then hitting TAB takes you to the
applications title bar, pressing enter reveals more options, hitting
arrow down takes you to the expanded list of found apps.

Hitting tab again takes you to Files and again takes you to Music

So NEVER navigate title bars with arrows and only navigate them with
tab.

Solves all issues as far as I can see and reduces tapping of keys.
