[Bug 195982] Re: Shift key (and caps lock) stop working when using VMWare

2021-02-07 Thread Ronny Ager-Wick
Wow, I did not expect this bug from 2008 to resurface in 2021!

To quote myself in 2008:
> As I'm using the free version of vmware, I can live with it until:
> 1. They fix it
> 2. VirtualBox becomes stable enough to use

#2 happened many *many* years ago, so I can no longer test this issue,
that was never really resolved beyond the sort-of-workaround with
setxkbmap in over 12 years...

[Bug 1851250] Re: [snap] chromium-browser snap cannot upload files outside ~

2020-11-24 Thread Ronny Svedman

This affects me too after upgrading from 18.04 LTS to 20.04 and I fint
it COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE.

The use of symlinks from /home to data on larger drives (which are shared
between windows and linux systems, and not unix FS) is industry standard since
over 30 years and this regression is atrocious. I will remove the snap and
install the .DEB until it is resolved. My root disk is too small for the files
i need to upload so a symlink to the storage drive which is permanently mounted
in fstab under /datasjoe is necessary. The implication you have also broken
access to removable media by default is likewise idiocy, any user is right in
assuming he/she can acess theyir usb drves anywhere in their desktop system.
Think again.

please? I dont want to have to give up ubuntu after 11 years of daily
driving it.

[Bug 576602] Re: Fancontrol relies on the module load order

2020-11-15 Thread Ronny Svedman
This affects me too on Asus z97P, since at least ubuntu 13.10 (when I bought
this system). I sometimes hear fans not spin down after booting, and have been
"rebooting until success" for the last 7 years... lucky it isnt too often I get
the wrong order, maybe once in 10 boots or so. Since adding a new GPU recently
made this problem worse, and I needed the it87 driver compiled from unofficial
sources to support my board (IT8606 chip) in 20.04, I stumbled on this bug via
the lm-sensors github.

I just run into this issue while trying out Scenic View, a quite important
debug tool for JavaFX developers, see here:
https://github.com/JonathanGiles/scenic-view
I would be glad if we could use Ubuntu for JavaFX development. Switching back
to Debian 10 for now...

[Bug 1863946] [NEW] Can't start the service with systemd

2020-02-19 Thread Ronny Trommer
Public bug reported:

I've installed softflowd with apt install softflowd. If you try to
enable and start with systemctl enable softflowd you get the following
message:

Synchronizing state of softflowd.service with SysV service script with
/lib/systemd/systemd-sysv-install.
Executing: /lib/systemd/systemd-sysv-install enable softflowd
Created symlink /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/softflowd.service →
/lib/systemd/system/softflowd.service.

if you look into the softflowd.service file, it just calls /bin/true for
start and stop. When you use the multi-instance version the
configuration file doesn't match to the systemd unit.

1.) the path is /usr/bin/softflowd instead of /usr/sbin/softflowd. It
seems this is changed between 0.9.9-3 and 1.0.0-1 and was not updated.
Additionally, the variables for $interface and $options are lowercase in
the systemd unit file and upper case in the configuration file. After
fixing this, creating a configuration file in
/etc/softflowd/default.conf, the service can be enabled and started in
ubuntu:eoan with systemctl enable | start softflowd@default.

** Affects: softflowd (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

For me the problem is kernel 5.3.0-18 related. When I revert to the
5.0.0-32 kernel all is working perfect.

[Bug 1586528] Re: Avahi-daemon withdraws address record

2018-05-13 Thread ronny
I think I found the culprit:
https://bugs.isc.org/Public/Bug/Display.html?id=45540

It boils down to a bug in the isc-dhcp-client. It doesn't correctly
react to time synchronization events and therefore simply breaks in
situations where time jumps "backwards" and the lease time in the
network is relatively short.

In my case I "fixed" the bug by removing the package isc-dhcp-client.
The NetworkManager now uses its internal dhcp client which doesn't
support as much features but at least works in my situations without
breaking the network connection.

[Bug 1217647] Re: Trash launcher icon expects trash folder in different location from any file manager

2016-10-14 Thread Ronny Sandig
I see this bug's quite old, but I can confirm it on Ubuntu 14.04.
After linking '~/.local/share/Trash/files' to '~/trash:' I get directed to the
correct directory
BUT I'm missing the special context menu entrie(s) like "Restore".
When opening Trash via "thunar trash://" from CLI I get the expected view with
correct context menu.

How to make Thunar/Nautilus recognise that directory as Trash?

[Bug 798414] Re: update-initramfs should produce a more helpful error when there isn't enough free space

2016-02-02 Thread Ronny Ager-Wick
@dmcnutt
USB disks show up here just like other disks in "df", so that's normal.
/dev/dm-0 is most likely an encrypted partition. /boot cannot be in an
encrypted partition because you need it for decryption. If the disk was just
one big encrypted partition, you'd need to boot on a USB stick or something in
order to decrypt it. If you install ubuntu on a disk using disk encryption (for
example ext4), then you don't need to separate /boot on a separate partition.

@dmcnutt /boot is usually a separate partition, byt default around
250MB, which is way too small. Use command "df" to see how much space
you have left on each partition. if /boot is nearly full, it doesn't
help if / has loads of space.

[Bug 798414] Re: update-initramfs should produce a more helpful error when there isn't enough free space

2016-01-06 Thread Ronny Ager-Wick
Completely agree with @grey - it is unacceptable that such a simple
thing will consistently create problems for ALL ubuntu users, many of
which will not be comfortable with entering "sudo apt-get -y autoremove"
or whatever in terminal.

I do understand the issue though - each kernel is a separate package,
and as such, apt can't just uninstall it without asking.

So I suggest that as default, instead of linux-image-generic depending on the
latest kernel package, create a new pakcage, perhaps called
"linux-image-generic-current", which does not /depend/ on the latest kernel
package, but /is/ the latest kernel package (or a copy at least). This way.
when a new kernel is released, this package will get a new version and the
kernel will be downloaded and *replace* the old one. There may be a catch here,
but I am sure if there is someone knowledgeable will tell me :)
It's important that this is the default, as less knowledgeable users will then
avoid the issue without having to do anything.

Yes, I know that this way, you can't boot on an older kernel. This is rarely an
issue though, as most people don't do that. For the few cases it is needed,
maybe one could add another package "linux-image-generic-previous" for the
second to the last version and/or "linux-image-generic-original" for the first
kernel to be released for the current version of Ubuntu?
Of course it's completely possible for a user to install one specific kernel
separately, which they can use in case the latest one can't boot.

For people who genuinely needs the current way of always retaining the
previous kernels, linux-image-generic could continue to be maintained as
well as linux-image-generic-current, and either of the two can be
installed, but not both. I believe this is possible with apt?

I also suggest the default boot partition size to be 5% of total disk space,
min 250MB (current default), max 2GB.
But no matter how big you make it, eventually it will run out of space anyway,
so only increasing the size of the /boot partition is just delaying the issue.

Alternatively, can a cron or startup job be set up as default (on all
new installations of Ubuntu), that runs "apt-get -y autoremove", perhaps
only for linux-kernel packages (if possible) at boot or every month or
so?

[Bug 1173759] Re: Ubuntu 13.04 can detect wi-fi but can't connect

2014-06-22 Thread Ronny Ager-Wick
I know this is an old thread, but it seem this problem still exists on Ubuntu
14.04. I recently did an install on an affected computer and I documented the
process so I could make this instruction for the benefit of anyone else having
the same issue:
https://github.com/agerwick/RT28XX-RT539X-Linux-driver
This repo also contains the driver itself, as it seems Ralink/Mediatek keeps
moving it around so some users have trouble finding it.

[Bug 296867] Re: empathy needs to support OTR encryption

2013-03-08 Thread Ronny Rabuzarus
OK, soon gsoc will start again. Maybe it can used to find someone who
will implement OTR in telepathy. Does anybody has good connection to
telepathy/gnome/fdo developers to ask if they would provide a mentor for
such a project?

What really annoys me about the otr integration in telepathy is the lack of
information you get. People (e.g. jprvita, McVittie) come and go. Someone never
hear something again about the project and the status. There are some questions
in my head. Something like, is the approach of jpvita usefull for furher
devlopment. If it's useful, what needs to be done to finish it?
I think it would be useful to have a wiki page with such kind of informations.
I can't believe that nobody is willing to code on this, so the question seems
to be what keeps developers away from coding on this or vice versa what
incentives must be given that someone is willing to work on otr implementation.

P.S. Don't get me wrong I don't want to blame anybody with this post. It
presents just a couple of questions which have risen in my head.

[Bug 943195] Re: xpdf.real crashed with SIGSEGV in GooHash::hash()

2013-02-20 Thread Ronny Cardona
Hello people.

It's been a while since the last update. I must say that I've been
trying to apply the patch in Quantal but there are others problems with
libpoppler (which is a higher version than precise) that I can't fix.

I've been tracking updates in Debian's bug report, but seems like this
problem *is not a trivial fix* and is completely out of my Kung-Fu.
Debian maintainer refused to apply some patches to fix this bug due to
future problems whit this package.

So, I'm leaving the bug and invite you to read the explanation in the
last update of the mentioned bug report[1].

I will mail Ubuntu Developers mailing list to inform about this
*serious* bug so they can take a decision about it, or maybe some
developer starts to work on this bug.

Thanks.

Raring and Quantal has the same package).

[Impact]

 * Notifications are shown with a back border all the time

 * This should be SRU'ed because all notification will be shown this way
for the rest of the LTS.

 * The bug was fixed in notify-ods 0.9.34-0ubuntu4 qualtal quetzal [1],
here's the changelog:

notify-osd (0.9.34-0ubuntu4) quantal; urgency=low

  * When running without a compositor, don't show a dark black border

2012-11-23 Thread Ronny Cardona
Hello again.

I've successfully applied the patch from debian [1] and xpdf works fine for me,
a least against this bug. Please test it from my ppa:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:rcart/testing
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xpdf

Or you could just install the deb package from:
http://ubuntuone.com/2EJaYcRLbaWVVAvNQqDxBF

This fix is just for 64bits, let me know if works for you and then I'll
create the 32 bits package as well.

Please leave me your comments and thanks in advance.

[Bug 1077339] [NEW] gfxboot examples fail to run

2012-11-10 Thread ronny
Public bug reported:

All examples in the gfxboot-examples package fail to run (except example
1). Here are the steps to reproduce the problem:

$ cd /usr/share/gfxboot/themes/example_02/
$ sudo make
$ gfxboot -p -b isolinux -a /usr/share/gfxboot/themes/example_02/bootlogo

A short test with dtrace shows that the findfile command always leaves
0 instead of the pointer to the file on the stack. Looks like there is
a bug in findfile or the syntax of findfile has changed and the examples
still use the old syntax but I'm just guessing here...

[Bug 1077344] [NEW] findfile always leaves 0 on stack instead of pointer to file

2012-11-10 Thread ronny
Public bug reported:

I tried to create a small gfxboot script that uses the findfile command
with the syntax explained in /usr/share/doc/gfxboot-dev/gfxboot.html.

Unfortunately, findfile does not seem to work, it always leaves 0 on the
stack instead of the pointer to the file.
I don't know if there is a bug in findfile or if the syntax of findfile changed
but the documentation in /usr/share/doc/gfxboot-dev/gfxboot.html was just not
updated...

Are there any hints on how to correctly use findfile with the current
gfxboot version?

Thanks and best regards

[Bug 788626] Re: Error: Unable to save resume file: File name too long

2012-10-24 Thread Ronny Ager-Wick
I have a temporary workaround until this issue is fixed. It seems indeed
that it occurs on encrypted home directories, so the solution is to move
the files away from that. Note that the files you move away from your
encrypted home directory are (obviously) no longer encrypted...

Anyway, this worked for me (execute in terminal):

# 1. exit Transmission (properly exit)
killall transmission
ps aux | grep transmission | grep -v grep # should yield nothing

# 2. move the resume directory (where transmission keeps the resume files) to a
non-encrypted directory:
mv ~/.config/transmission/resume /tmp/transmission-resume

# 3. make a symbolic link from the original location to the new one:
ln -s /tmp/transmission-resume ~/.config/transmission/resume

Obviously, it's also a good idea to *save* these files with long file names in
a non-encrypted directory.

[Bug 1030022] Re: Port from legacy Xlib to to modern XCB

2012-09-27 Thread Ronny Cardona
Hello,

Spectrwm has moved from Xlib to XCB in upstream. Debian Maintainer is a
little busy right now and will update it as soon as he can.

I think that Spectrwm 2.X (XCB version) will not reach Quantal Quetzal,
but I'm thinking to keep it updated in my PPA (or request a merge for
it).

[Bug 953586] Re: Rhythmbox does not properly retrieve tags for multiple CD albums.

2012-08-20 Thread Ronny D Brian
I also experience the problem described by ricotz0; it appears, however,
that, when the second disc has more tracks than does the first, the
correct track list is not produced. Instead, the list is the same as the
first disc's but extends to the beginning of the second disc when it
runs out of the first disc's tracks. Since my first disc had 8 tracks
and the second 9, the last track on the second disc was shown to be what
should have been the first track on that disc. I'm trying to create
images for the two discs in Dan Fogelberg's The Innocent Age. The last
track of the second disc should be Ghosts but is listed as Stolen
Moments. Also, the play times appear to be copied from MusicBrainz
instead of being generated by rhythmbox (a surprise to me). The barcode
for The Innocent Age is 07464373932. Rhythmbox is 2.96. PICARD's list
contains the tracks on both disks. Track numbers are distinguished by
either a 1-track# or 2-track#. I tried specifying 2 in the disc: box
(rhythmbox's menu) before pressing reload, but the same list was
returned.

Fane, why do you think the bug was *fixed released*?. I don't see any
changes in the changelog/diff files [1] that fix this issue. Pidgin
pulls a lot of *Suggests dependencies* where not in a Gnome DE. The is
and Opinion bug and should be marked as so.

[Bug 954979] Re: sudo apt-get install pidgin require gnome packages in lxde

2012-03-16 Thread Ronny Cardona
When you do
sudo apt-get install pidgin

Pidgin (like many, many others packages) will recommend you a lot of GTK
dependencies if you don't have a Gnome DE (Desktop Environment). This is
because the package should integrate much better with those package.

To avoid this behavior and just install the package with his *dependencies*
and no 'Suggests' (in debian/control file) dependencies, run this:
sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends pidgin

I'm marking this bug as Opinion since it's not a really bug.

Thanks for your report.

click the quit option in Buddies menu to properly exit pidgin.

Please file a new bug report against pidgin. Launch a terminal and do:
ubuntu-bug pidgin

and follow the instructions. Thank you for reporting that bug.

[Bug 947643] Re: In Precise, Pidgin creates a second icon in the launcher when opened by dash or HUD

2012-03-09 Thread Ronny Cardona
I've just downloaded another precise iso, installed updates and tested
this bug, but I can't reproduce it this time. Jorge, could you please
try to reproduce it after applying updates (if available)?

When I run in a console pidgin (while been opened in the dash) it says
that there's a libpurple instance open. Try to do that as well.

Seems to be fixed here :)

[Bug 947643] Re: In Precise, Pidgin creates a second icon in the launcher when opened by dash or HUD

2012-03-09 Thread Ronny Cardona
Jorge, I think this is the normal behavior of pidgin in Unity. When
using the close button, the instance will remain opened. You can confirm
this by going to the mail notification button, and you'll see the little
arrow showing that pidin is open. To completely close pidgin, go to
Buddies menu and choose Quit to close it. (We're talking about
behavior, not how to use pidgin :) )

This bug is fix-released.
