No, this is not a duplicate of #1569497, which "is for tracking
regressions while the updated packages are in the security team PPA".

I reported this bug to make sure the new samba packages which patch
Badlock will be included in the initial release of Ubuntu 16.04.

[Bug 10910] Re: Default page size for printing is letter

2015-10-15 Thread rpr nospam
Elias, in you comment #175 you didn't wrote which version of Firefox you
had when you run it for the first time.

Also, have you noticed that if you make a change in
Regional Formats in System Settings > Language > Language Support > Regional
Formats
the change takes effect the next time you log in (see my comment #172).
Then check what you get when you run the locale command in the terminal window.

[Bug 10910] Re: Default page size for printing is letter

2015-09-30 Thread rpr nospam
I've tested Firefox 41 on Ubuntu 15.04 and I'd say that the issue has
been fixed. Here is the test procedure:

(1) Check your Regional Formats in System Settings > Language > Language
Support > Regional Formats. Let's say this option is set to "English (United
Kingdom)" (if you change it, the change takes effect the next time you log in).
That option will change the environment variables for various locale categories
including LC_PAPER.
(2) Start Firefox with default user settings. You can do it by running "firefox
-P" and creating a new user profile.
(3) Try to print (Ctrl+P). On the Page Setup tab you get "Paper size: A4".

I get this result even without step (2).

If the Regional Formats are set to "English (United States)" then you
get "Paper Size: US Letter".

You can also test this without changing Regional Formats: in the
Terminal Window run the following commands and check the paper size as
in step (3) above:

LC_PAPER=en_GB.UTF-8 firefox

LC_PAPER=en_US.UTF-8 firefox

[Bug 657990] Re: System freeze when i'am not moving the mouse or typing.

2014-05-22 Thread rpr nospam
Romain, I'd sas that for additional troubleshooting the issue the following
article may give you some hints:
http://linoxide.com/how-tos/cpu-bottleneck-linux/

You should have the following packages installed: procps and sysstat.

First, maximize the terminal window. Then run vmstat and mpstat for a
while to see CPU usage, e.g.:

$ vmstat 2 5

$ mpstat 2 5

If you see high %irq you can use the following command to find out which
interrupt number is the culprit:

$ sar -I XALL 2 1 | less

And the following command shows the recorded number of interrupts per
CPU per IO device:

$ cat /proc/interrupts

which is useful to find out which IO device uses the interrupt (see more
in proc(5) man page).

Maximize the terminal window, start htop and sort processes by CPU% (F6,

2014-01-19 Thread rpr nospam
I have a similar problem in LibO Writer (v. 4.1.3.2) on Linux Mint 16

At some point I can no longer Paste Special the text copied from an

[Bug 1026426] Re: LibreOffice Unity integration - opening an .odt file from dash or nautilus should yield correct icon and allow switching between the subsequently opened LO windows

2013-09-23 Thread rpr nospam
Murakami, is the LibreOffice installed from Ubuntu repository or from
the deb file downloaded from https://www.libreoffice.org/download ?

Please, run the following in a terminal:

which soffice

If you get /usr/bin/soffice then you have LibreOffice from Ubuntu
repository.

If you get a path starting with /opt then you have LibreOffice installed
from https://www.libreoffice.org/download (which is also a common
scenario as Linux users want to have the latest LibreOffice as soon as
possible).

LibreOffice Unity integration should work correctly in both cases. I
wonder if developers tested BAMF (and possible other components) with
both LibreOffice installation scenarios.

[Bug 210686]

2013-08-19 Thread rpr nospam
Users who have at least intermediate computer skills would expect that
the Select All action selects all content of a document they are
editing/viewing in a GUI application. That is a standard across wide
range of applications.

If it is broken in LibreOffice Writer because some of its developers
decided to use certain document model (a defective model I'd say) then
AT LEAST the LibreOffice Help should contain a note about this issue.

Currently, the LibreOffice Help says the following in Text Documents
Command and Menu Reference Menus Edit:

Select All
Selects the entire content of the current file, frame, or text object.

What does the text object means?

I'd suggest expanding this description so that it is in accordance with
the actual functionality of this command especially regarding the case
when a document begins with a table.

Also, I see that Select All doesn't include inserted frames.

@rg
That's why I moved from Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit to Linux Mint with Cinnamon.

Although the Unity is a good idea, its implementation is broken. After
years of development it still has annoying bugs, like this one. It
seems to me that Ubuntu is tested with having only average home users in
mind (who run only a media player, Firefox and Thunderbird). But there
are users who create text documents, spreadsheets, presentations,
diagrams, and have 10+ documents open at the same time. They want an
efficient, customizable and bug-free desktop environment.

[Bug 1026426] Re: LibreOffice Unity integration - opening an .odt file from dash or nautilus should yield correct icon and allow switching between the subsequently opened LO windows

2012-11-21 Thread rpr nospam
@photonic (#147)
I'd say this behavior is expected (I see it also on Ubuntu 12.04 with bamf
0.2.118-0ubuntu0.3).
Probably, it's because all LibreOffice applications actually use one executable:
/usr/lib/libreoffice/program/soffice.bin

Try to invoke the following commands (one at a time) from the command
line and watch the icon that appears on the Launcher:

/usr/lib/libreoffice/program/soffice.bin
/usr/lib/libreoffice/program/soffice.bin --writer
/usr/lib/libreoffice/program/soffice.bin --calc
/usr/lib/libreoffice/program/soffice.bin --impress
/usr/lib/libreoffice/program/soffice.bin /usr/lib/libreoffice/CREDITS.odt

The first command (soffice.bin without arguments) gives white (generic)
LibO icon while the other commands give the icon corresponding to the
LibO application opened.

[Bug 931967] Re: Corrupted graphics after the login until the unity launcher appears

2012-11-14 Thread rpr nospam
As suggested by jolindbe, on Ubuntu 12.04 I've invoked the following command:
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri

which fixed the issue of corrupted graphics after the user login (for
the user who invoked the command). After several reboots it's still OK.

This could be put in a logout script but I'd say that
/etc/gdm/PostSession/Default is not a good choice for Ubuntu 12.04 as it uses
lightdm instead of GDM.

Personally, I install cinnamon from https://launchpad.net/~gwendal-

[Bug 1026426] Re: LibreOffice Unity integration (launcher and switcher) is broken

Yes, sure... the code is ready, the distro will do an SRU in few days.

This was written two weeks ago and it seems that the standard
distribution of Ubuntu 12.04 still does not contain the fix (with both
precise-updates and precise-proposed included in the software sources).
Which packages should be updated actually?

Off topic: Regarding the Super+W workaround (Super+W invokes the scale
plugin in Compiz) I can say I don't like the way it works. Please,
have a look at bug #1050666 and if you think that the scale plugin
should work differently mark that you are also affected.

[Bug 1050666] [NEW] Compiz scale plugin: picking a window changes position of windows in the next scale

2012-09-13 Thread rpr nospam
Public bug reported:

How to reproduce:

(1) After logon open a couple of applications, e.g.
Nautilus, LibO Writer, Ubuntu Software Center, and Firefox.

(2) Press Super+W to initiate scaled view all windows (provided by the
scale plugin). The windows are shown in the following order:
Nautilus, Writer, USC, Firefox (left to right, top to bottom)

(3) Click Writer and then press Super+W again. Now the windows are
shown in the following order:
Writer, USC, Nautilus, Firefox

(4) Click USC and then press Super+W again. Now the windows are
shown in the following order:
USC, Nautilus, Writer, Firefox

(5) Click Nautilus and then press Super+W again. Now the windows are
shown in the following order:
Nautilus, Writer, USC, Firefox

This example shows that scale plugin changes positions of scaled
windows as they are picked by the user. This is probably by design but
I'd say that such reordering of windows is counter-intuitive and
confusing because the user has to visually search through all windows
in order to find the right one to click.

I'd suggest adding an option to change that behavior so that scaled
windows do not change their positions. In the above example it would
mean that windows were always shown in the following order:
Nautilus, Writer, USC, Firefox
regardless of which window was last picked.

Currently CompizConfig Settings Manager does not provide such option.

[Bug 1033684] [NEW] black-box game does not interact well with Gnome desktop session

2012-08-06 Thread rpr nospam
Public bug reported:

How to reproduce:
(1) Log in as a guest using a Gnome Shell session (select Gnome in the login
window).
(2) Set the screen resolution to 1024x768 or higher.
(3) Start an application (e.g. gnome terminal).
(4) Start the black-box game, which runs in full screen mode by default.
(5) Using Alt+Tab keyboard shortcut for switching to another active application
does not work.
(6) Click Quit to end the game. The desktop resolution does not return to the
one set in step (2) but remains at 800x600 (used by the game).
(7) Set the screen resolution to 1024x768 or higher again.
(8) Start the black-box game again. Now, the game is running without changing
the screen resolution (the desktop is visible behind the game window) but you
can't move the mouse pointer outside the game window.

The problem does not exist when the game runs in a Unity session.

This was tested on Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit with gnome-shell 3.4.1.

[Bug 1033703] [NEW] user can't quit black-box game in Gnome Classic desktop session

2012-08-06 Thread rpr nospam
Public bug reported:

How to reproduce:
(1) Log in as a guest using a Classic Gnome Shell session (select Gnome Classic
in the login window), which starts the desktop session as:
gnome-session --session=gnome-fallback
(2) Set the screen resolution to 1024x768 or higher.
(3) Start the black-box game, which runs in full screen mode by default.
(4) Clicking Quit does not quit the game but shows the help instead. It seems
there is no way to quit the game and get in control of the desktop from current
desktop sesion. (I tried various keyboard shortcuts, e.g. Alt+F1, Alt+F2,
Ctrl+Alt+Delete, Ctrl+C.)
(5) Switch to the textual console with Ctrl+Alt+F1, log in and kill the
black-box process:
sudo pkill -9 black-box

A workaround is to start the black-box game in windowed mode:
black-box -f

The problem does not exist when the game runs in a Unity session.

This was tested on Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit and 32-bit with gnome-shell
3.4.1.

[Bug 999888] Re: Missing brightness control in System Settings/Brightness and Lock

2012-06-06 Thread rpr nospam
Yes, it also happens in a guest session. I'm attaching the corresponding
~/.xsession-errors

I do not use a background picture on the desktop:
$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri
''

$ gsettings reset org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri
$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri
'file:///usr/share/backgrounds/warty-final-ubuntu.png'

This gives back the default background picture but the Brightness and
Lock tool still does not show the brightness slider.

[Bug 872114] Re: Yelp causes 100% CPU usage

2012-05-28 Thread rpr nospam
I can reproduce this bug on Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit with yelp
3.4.1-0ubuntu1.The test machine has a quad-core 3.2 GHz AMD Phenom II
and when the bug occurs one of the cores constantly runs at 100% until
closing yelp (tested for 10+ minutes).

It seems that high CPU usage is triggered by using the search bar in
yelp. If a search query produces no results, load is normal. But if a
query produces some results, high CPU load occurs.

I'd say it this bug is quite similar to bug 268845 which was reported in
2008.

[Bug 874900] Re: Enable mobile broadband option gets unchecked

2012-02-25 Thread rpr nospam
Here is a workaround to auto start a mobile broadband connection after
user login:

In the command line list the configured connections in your Network Manager:
$ nmcli con list
NAME UUID TYPE
   TIMESTAMP-REAL
Tele2 Default 1 93c93207-adce-40e4-beb5-d9f9c830d474 gsm
   Sat 25 Feb 2012 01:27:42 PM CET
Vipnet connection 1 054bdd1f-34e3-4db1-b18b-d38e885276c8 gsm
   never

The first item in a row is the connection name.
Now, create a command script that starts one of your connections after a delay
of e.g. 10 seconds (maybe you'll need a longer delay if your broadband device
needs more time to initialize):

#!/bin/sh
sleep 10
nmcli nm wwan on
nmcli con up id Tele2 Default 1

If the connection is used by multiple users on your Ubuntu, you can put the
lines in a file accessible to all users, e.g.
 /usr/local/bin/start_my_connection
and set the file permissions as follows:

$ sudo chmod 775 /usr/local/bin/start_my_connection

[Bug 568720] Re: Error scanning for fd0 on boot

2012-01-03 Thread rpr nospam
I had this problem on Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit with grub-pc 1.99-12ubuntu5.
The PC has a Gigabyte board with Award BIOS v 6.00PG.

The workaround suggested above worked -- I disabled FDD in BIOS:

[Bug 853509] Re: Missing 'mirror' effect

2011-12-31 Thread rpr nospam
The cheese-list (see http://mail.gnome.org/archives/cheese-
list/2011-December/thread.html) provides info on this issue: cheese 3.*
uses effects from the gnome-video-effects package which does not contain
the Horizontal Flip (a simple mirror) and Vertical Flip effects.

But, there are two simple files (attached) a user can put in
~/.local/share/gnome-video-effects to add the effects.

If you copy them to /usr/share/gnome-video-effects/ they will be
available to all users.

[Bug 798596] Re: hplip delays last page on LaserJet 1200

2011-12-09 Thread rpr nospam
I'm sure there is no problem with communication between PC and the printer via
USB.
The PC I tried last has dual boot configuration: MS Windows XP Pro. SP3 32-bit
and Ubuntu 11.10 32-bit.
With the printer connected to the PC on a USB port I first booted Ubuntu and
found out that there is a problem with printing as described above.
Then rebooted in Windows XP (without any reconnection or resetting the printer)
and found out that there is no problem with printing (in XP a PS driver is
used).

[Bug 798596] Re: hplip delays last page on LaserJet 1200

2011-12-07 Thread rpr nospam
I have a very similar problem with printing to HP LaserJet 1200 with
PS driver. The printer was first installed on Ubuntu 10.10 and worked
fine, also after upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04.

But after upgrade to Ubuntu 11.10 the last page of the document never
gets printed: green light is blinking as if the printer is receiving
data and after a few minutes it turns off but the last page does not
get printed.

[Bug 886460] Re: Running unity-greeter causes user settings to be altered and made unchangeable.

2011-11-26 Thread rpr nospam
I can confirm this on Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit with unity-greeter 0.1.1-0ubuntu1.
After a user starts unity-greeter the current theme is changed.
I tried the gnome-tweak-tool to fix the theme but to no avail.
A solution is to restore ~/.config/dconf/user from a backup (you do back up
your home directory regularly, don't you? :-) and log in again.

It does not work at all (can't find any search term).

Installed recoll and it works great. I'd recommend it to everyone. And
yes, it can search for phrases in enclosed quotes.

[Bug 554183] Re: paste special does not work

2011-09-07 Thread rpr nospam
I'm affected by this in LibreOffice 3.4.3 (OOO340m1 Build:302) on
Ubuntu 11.04 64-bit. As mentioned above, the behaviour is
inconsistent.

I was working in Writer when this started to occur. Then I tried the
following steps:

(1) Close all Writer windows.

(2) Open a new blank document in Writer.

(3) Open gedit and write some text, select it and invoke Copy command.

(4) In Writer invoke the Paste command which works as expected.

(5) In Writer invoke the Paste Special command (either via the File
menu using the shortcut) - nothing happens.

But after I tried the same steps a few more times the Paste Special command
came back to normal.

Renzo, I'm surprised with your report as in Natty the bug was fixed for me and

[Bug 802186] [NEW] after boot X server crashes (segmentation fault) with blank screen

2011-06-26 Thread rpr nospam
Public bug reported:

On a system with a Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4350 512MB DDR2 PCI-E HDMI/DVI-I/VGA
card I upgraded from
Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 64-bit (with Linux 2.6.35-30-generic #54-Ubuntu SMP Tue
Jun 7 18:41:54 UTC 2011 x86_64) to
Ubuntu Desktop 11.04 64-bit with Linux 2.6.38-10-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jun
2 21:32:22 UTC 2011 x86_64.

After selecting standard boot in the GRUB menu, I regularly get the
blank screen and I'm not able to log in.

If I select the recovery mode in the GRUB menu, I am able to choose
failsafeX and to log in to a GDM session.

Near the end of /var/log/Xorg.0.log I found:

I would need to revert to Ubuntu 10.10.
