[Bug 530289] Re: ERROR: You must have either /usr/bin/kvm or /usr/bin/VBoxManage installed

2010-03-05 Thread sam tygier
i was able to reproduce the error on a live usb stick.

i think the bit you were looking for is this.
ubu...@ubuntu:~$ /usr/bin/kvm-ok
INFO: Your CPU supports KVM extensions
INFO: /dev/kvm does not exist
HINT: sudo modprobe kvm
KVM acceleration can NOT be used

i guess /dev/kvm gets created on the next reboot. so i could not
reproduce the error earlier.

[Bug 419328] Re: [i945gme] attaching external monitor: laptop display is black, external monitor too, with frozen mouse coursor

2010-03-02 Thread sam tygier
just tested in lucid.
on pluging in an external monitor, and pressing detect monitor, the new display
is detected, and the screen spans across it. compiz seems to automatically fall
back to metacity. apart from loss of desktop effects everything carries on
working. no crash.

if i run glxgears, and then resize its window, after it passes a certain
width the display of the gears is corrupted. but there is no crash.

seems that the freeze is fixed for me

[Bug 502433] Re: Lucid: b43 fatal DMA error on Dell Mini 9

2010-02-27 Thread sam tygier
found this thread
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.network/151941/focus=151968

"From a distro point of view, you would not want to set FORCE_PIO as the
performance penalty would be very large."

"We certainly hope to fix the issue. We do know that the failure occurs when b43
is loaded after a cold boot, but if one warm boots after using wl, then it works
OK. There is some kind of initialization problem that only shows on Atom and
some Intel Core Duo CPUs."

also the issue still occurs in mainline ppa 2.6.33 kernel.

i can't back to my session by switching VTs. if i log in to VT1 i can run top

crashes. have to do sysreq+k to get back to gdm.

[Bug 525488] [NEW] Errors in several of the verbal questions

2010-02-21 Thread sam tygier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gbrainy

Several of the verbal questions have errors in them. Jordi asked me to
put them all in one bug report.

<_question type = "MultipleOptions">An artist that has became
an enduring icon is?
<_answer correct ="yes">emblem
<_answer>innovator
<_answer>pioneer
<_answer>martyr

I am not familiar with emblem being used in this context.

<_question type = "PairOfWordsCompare">fish / aquarium |
monkey
<_answer correct ="yes">zoo

Could be interpreted in several ways.
where do monkeys live: tree, jungle etc
where do monkeys live in captivity: cage
An aquarium can mean a fish tank, as well as an attraction at a person would
visit.
where should i go to see monkeys in captivity: zoo
But most zoos also have fish in them.

<_question type = "PairOfWordsCompare">ring / finger |
bracelet
<_answer correct ="yes">wrist

Maybe 'arm' should be an option aswell

<_question type = "PairOfWordsCompare">seals / flippers |
bird
<_answer correct ="yes">wings

Either bird should be birds, or seals should be seal.

<_question type = "PairOfWordsCompare">tears / eyes |
sweat
<_answer correct ="yes">body

Skin or Pore(s), are also good answers. A guess feet or armpits could be
valid. Wikipedia suggests sweat gland.

<_question type = "PairOfWordsCompare">dish / break |
balloon
<_answer correct ="yes">burst

Also 'pop'

<_question type = "PairOfWordsCompare">bridge / over |
tunnel
<_answer correct ="yes">in

Also 'under' or 'through'

<_question type = "PairOfWordsCompare">eyebrow / eye |
mustache
<_answer correct ="yes">lip

Also 'mouth'

<_question type = "PairOfWordsCompare">whirlpool / water |
tornado
<_answer correct ="yes">wind

Also 'air'

<_question type = "PairOfWordsCompare">slurp / tongue |
snort
<_answer correct ="yes">nose

I would not associate slurping with the tongue, maybe should be "slurp /
mouth | snort"

<_question type = "PairOfWordsCompare">novel / author |
song
<_answer correct ="yes">composer

Also 'writer'

<_question type = "PairOfWordsCompare">art / studio |
music
<_answer correct ="yes">conservatory

Really not sure about this one. Although dictionary.com has conservatory as a
music school, that's not a common definition in English. Music would usually be
recorded in a studio, or performed in a concert hall or band stand, but then
art should probably be gallery. Probably best to drop this question. Maybe
replace with

<_question type = "PairOfWordsCompare">art / gallery |
drama
<_answer correct ="yes">theatre

<_question type = "PairOfWordsCompare">car / road |
train
<_answer correct ="yes">track

Also 'railway', 'train track', 'rail'

[Bug 283658] Re: grip buffer overflow in intrepid

2009-12-18 Thread sam tygier
personally i switched to sound-juicer. doesn't have quite so many
options, but can still do everything i need it to. also it uses
musicbrainz instead of CDDB which gives more consistent results (eg
'REM' vs 'R.E.M.').

there are some more listed at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CDRipping , or have a search in the
forum.

[Bug 496510] [NEW] poor cpu utilisation

2009-12-14 Thread sam tygier
Public bug reported:

karmic seems to be making poor use of my CPU. (or top and powertop are
giving odd numbers). CPU is atom with hyperthreading.

while doing upgrade (and dkms was building the openafsmodule) i checked
powertop and top. and was surprised to see the the CPU spending half its
time at 50% clock speed. CPU is reported to be about 50% busy, but task
only add up to about 30%. disk wait is very low less than 1%

surely CPU should be at max, and cc should be taking up 100% of one of
the hyperthreads.

An Intel dev upstream suggests working around this in compiz. I am not
sure is a proper solution, but it would reduce the number of crashes.

[Bug 486369] [NEW] totem fails to a video's audio to network pulseaudio server

2009-11-21 Thread sam tygier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

I have set up pulseaudio on a remote machine 192.168.1.99 to receive audio over
the network. on another machine i can do:
paplay foo.flac # to play to the local speakers
PULSE_SERVER=192.168.1.99 paplay foo.flac # to play through the remote machine.
the same works with audio files in totem
totem foo.flac # to play to the local speakers
PULSE_SERVER=192.168.1.99 totem foo.flac # to play through the remote machine.

however if the file is a video file, then when i do
PULSE_SERVER=192.168.1.99 totem foo2.mov
i just get the picture shown, and silence.

the audio should play through the network

[Bug 399520] Re: wacom tablet not working after resume from suspend

2009-11-12 Thread sam tygier
this is still an issue in karmic.

looks like the best way to fix is to create a file /etc/pm/config.d/50wacom
containing
SUSPEND_MODULES="wacom"
eg
echo 'SUSPEND_MODULES="wacom"' | sudo tee /etc/pm/config.d/50wacom

maybe a file like this should ship in some package, though i am not sure
which?

the patch fies the issue for me. i can read pdf files from afs with no

i still get some audit messages in dmesg from evince. looks like it tries to
read lots of random files when you load it.

[Bug 452566] Re: album plays in wrong order

2009-10-24 Thread sam tygier
if found the clever nautural sort algorithm in utils/sorting.py

NUMS = re.compile('([0-9]+)')
...
return [ part.isdigit() and int(part) or part.lower() for part in NUMS.split(s)
]

which seems to do the right thing on those file names. but i can see where this
is used in the rest of moovida.
elisa/extern/path.py seems to use elisa/extern/natural_sort.py instead, which
does not look as clever.

also can't see where metadata tags are used.
