[Bug 1766945] Re: (EFI on top of legacy install) choosing "replace" or "resize" options in partitioning may lead to an install failure
I have a multi-partition legacy (BIOS) system. About a year ago, when prompted by software loader, I upgraded from 16 LTS to 18.04 LTS Performed several updates after that (as prompted) but something went wrong with a systemd file (but system still worked well for many months). Recently, I was prompted to do a partial update and it completed happy but, next time I re-booted (selected version through Grub as always have) and got a bunch of red exclamation points and something about software frozen and system would not complete boot. On Dec 13, 2019 I downloaded image of 18.04 from main Ubuntu page and created bootable USB. This allowed me to create my user account and password in order to back up my user data, but the "refreshed" 18.04.3 image still will not boot up via the original Grub (only runs with the newly-created boot USB plugged in). Downloaded the 19.04 image on 12/15 from the primary Ubuntu page, over-wrote the bootable USB, and tried to install it over top of 18.04.3 image and get complaints about EFI boot will not work (of course, since my hardware is BIOS and not EFI). Someone here suggested creating a 200 MB EFI partition anyway and that will be my next step. At the moment the installer shows first a partition for /sda (I take this to be the location of the original boot software), followed by an ext4 partition named /sda4 (where an old mythbuntu resides), followed by an ext4 partition /sda6 (where the 18.04 or 19.04 image is loaded, followed by /sda5 partition designated swap. So, this bug is DEFINITELY NOT fixed. I am a software engineer and would like to learn more about booting Ubuntu. Can anyone suggest a good place in the Ubuntu document archive to begin familiarization? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1766945 Title: (EFI on top of legacy install) choosing "replace" or "resize" options in partitioning may lead to an install failure To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/partman-auto/+bug/1766945/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1234334] [NEW] windows on previously disconnected second monitor no longer responsive
Public bug reported: I upgraded yesterday to 13.04 from Ubuntu Studio 12.10; running xfce4 and xfwm4. On a dual-monitor setup, I accidentally kicked out the DVI cable from one of the monitors and plugged it back in (this may have already happened once or twice without consequence; I can't remember if that was before or after the upgrade). This second monitor displays all windows correctly, and the mouse cursor is able to move between screens as usual. But none of the windows or other UI elements on the second monitor receive focus or respond in any way. Switching virtual desktops only switches the first monitor. Trying to move a window from the first monitor to the second monitor shows the mouse cursor on the second monitor but not the window contents (and the window gets "stuck" on the first monitor as though there is no second monitor). Going to the console and back to X blanks out the second monitor, but the mouse cursor can still travel to it. NVIDIA X Server Settings no longer shows the second monitor, and Detect Displays does not fix that. ARandR shows both displays in its layout and allows both to be configured, until a new layout is applied, then the second display is completely disabled (mouse now properly stuck on first monitor) and not configurable. ** Affects: lightdm (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1234334 Title: windows on previously disconnected second monitor no longer responsive To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/1234334/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1119769] [NEW] initscript fail stopping suricata
Public bug reported: AFAICT, suricata cleans up its own pidfile when stopped by start-stop- daemon. As a result, the instruction "rm $PIDFILE > /dev/null 2>&1" in the stop clause of the case statement in /etc/init.d/suricata exits with an error status, which causes the entire script to as well (since it's run by sh -e). [Bug 1088731] Re: sudo apt-get install wine produced an error, exit code 1
As noted above, the problem cam when I executed sudo apt-get install wine I believe the problem was related to the following: At one point, a grey window came up, indicating that there was microsoft code or some such thing, and requiring that I click on a radio button indicating "Yes". I was unable to click on the radio button; I tried. So I killed the process. The problem "debconf, etc." .. has now occurred, every time new software is attempted to be installed. Of them, only the 3.7 box is still up, so I'm tagging this 'kernel-fixed-upstream' and changing back to confirmed. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1089794 Title: kernel null pointer dereference on dell pe r210s To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1089794/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1087886] [NEW] xen scripts' eth0 assumption broken by biosdevname
Public bug reported: There are a number of scripts in /etc/xen/scripts (e.g. vif-bridge, vif- nat, &c) that use 'eth0' as a default interface when one isn't provided. That's good and useful when it's the correct choice-- and for me, prior to Quantal, it was. But then biosdevname came along and renamed my PowerEdge servers' nics "em1" and "em2", violating these scripts' implicit assumptions about interface names. Since the biosdevname behavior isn't going to change (I gather?), these scripts should be fixed to make a more reasonable assumption on systems like mine. ** Affects: xen (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1087886 Title: xen scripts' eth0 assumption broken by biosdevname To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xen/+bug/1087886/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 1082728] Re: The Glib library has bugs that affect Thunderbird
Hmmm... Dear Philip, So it actually is a bug in Ubuntu Thunderbird -- Thunderbird has problems running zimbra email. Also, the messages almost definitely have to do with the lag that i am seeing -- they occur at exactly the same time. Only one thing wrong with that: Thunderbird on my wife's Windows computer has no trouble with exactly the same zimbra mail account. So, if the bug is in Thunderbird, then it's only in Ubuntu Thunderbird. Nikki thought that it was a bug in Ubuntu's Glib. She directed me to emails indicating a similar problem with Firefox and Ubuntu glib -- but that's been fixed. -- Saul On Fri, Nov 30, 2012 at 10:00 PM, Phillip Susi wrote: > The messages come from glib, but indicate an error in thunderbird. Here's what shows in the terminal when I double click on an item; and then I double clicked on another item: saul@NullA:~$ thunderbird (thunderbird:3175): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: /build/buildd/glib2.0-2.32.3/./gobject/gsignal.c:3393: signal name `selection_changed' is invalid for instance `0x958b87c0' (thunderbird:3175): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: /build/buildd/glib2.0-2.32.3/./gobject/gsignal.c:3393: signal name `selection_changed' is invalid for instance `0x88d090a0' According to Nikki (and it seems very believable to me), this is the source of the bug in Thunderbird -- actually a bug in Glib. (I was hoping it would be fixed in the new version of Ubuntu -- but, no change). Balsa mail works perfectly. (Also, I should note: Thunderbird has no trouble with my gmail account. The problems occur with my zimbra mail account (my business email: z.rochester.edu)) Hope that you can hep, -- Saul On Thu, Nov 29, 2012 at 11:00 PM, Phillip Susi wrote: > I am unable to reproduce this on 12.10. Re: [Bug 1082728] Re: The Glib library has bugs that affect Thunderbird
Initially this was a question that I posed on Launchpad. I was asked to put the content of .xsessions into a pastebin, as well as the output in a terminal when I started Thunderbird in the terminal. The output in the terminal had the error messages for Glib calls. Nikki from Ubuntu Launchpad told me to close the case with "this solved my problem", and to make a bug report about the Glib problem. I have. BTW, there appears to be a new version of Ubuntu. How can I upgrade to that? Maybe that will solve the problem? -- Saul On Thu, Nov 29, 2012 at 11:00 PM, Phillip Susi wrote: > I am unable to reproduce this on 12.10. [Bug 1082728] [NEW] The Glib library has bugs that affect Thunderbird
Public bug reported: When I double click on an email in Thunderbird, Thunderbird (correctly) puts a copy of that email in a new tab. But when I delete the new tab, Thunderbird greys; it makes extensive use of the hard disk, causing a large whirling sound, for two or three minutes, before Thunderbird returns to normal (not greyed out). As a result, my Thunderbird is very difficult to use, and is putting far too much demand on the computer. In fact, just single clicking on an email (to read it) often causes Thunderbird to grey, and to whirl the hard disk, for a minute. Something must be wrong with my Thunderbird. I've tried; sudo apt-get install --reinstall Thunderbird -- this did not help. Help much appreciated. -- Saul The Ubuntu/Thunderbird problem described above is caused by a bug in Ubuntu Glib. -- Saul ** Affects: thunderbird (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1082728 Title: The Glib library has bugs that affect Thunderbird To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thunderbird/+bug/1082728/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

After closing the update-manager, I attempted to run: sudo apt-get purge linux-image-2.6.38-11-generic sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.38-11-generic This gave me a lengthy error that suggested there was not enough space to install. I will now reboot and see if it actually was. Assuming it works, it would appear that the bug is the update- manager not checking if there is enough space in a separate /boot partition.
