[Bug 1244778] Re: Xorg should be way more resilient or at least print detailed information in presence of errors in configuration files

2014-05-17 Thread Teo
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected compiz-0.9 saucy ubuntu

** Description changed:

Basically the real issue is that whenever there's an error in some xorg
configruation file, xorg fails to start, instead of trying to fallback to some
minimal working settings and/or printing debuggable information about the error.
It's too fragile. By doing something wrong with some xorg configuration file,
you may end up with a system that won't even boot and allow you to fix the
error.

I'll delete the original description as it is not relevant. (I guess it can
be seen anyway in the edit history)

  See also

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-304/+bug/1239472
which is a somehow related case (an error in some xorg config file rendering
the whole system unusable, and no clue to the user about it)

[Bug 1244778] Re: Xorg should be way more resilient or at least print detailed information in presence of errors in configuration files

2014-05-17 Thread Teo
Ok so I have collected the information that I was asked, which is
completely irrelevant to the bug as anyone reading the bug description
would notice, and also completely meaningless as I am not (nor can I
ever be anymore) on any of the computers where I observed the issue (but
again, that's irrelevant).

[Bug 1320550] [NEW] An error occurred during update, and information given about the error is partly unclear and partly wrong

2014-05-17 Thread Teo
Public bug reported:

During installation of available updates, something crashed: I got
Ubuntu's system program problem detected popup, though the details
said what crashed was XCode (which wasn't running) and that the problem
could not be reported because it's third party software (then I wonder
why the error reporting option shows up in the first place).

Anyway, after this update manager failed to install some package (and
didn't tell me which one).

Then a prohibition symbol appeared in the notification area (note that
this is a wrong icon btw, it is supposed to mean that something is
forbidden, but here it is wrongly used to mean that something went
wrong)

By clicking on it, a mostly-nonsense error message unfolded, reading (extra
rage to the person who coded the error message in such a way that I cannot copy
and paste it, btw):
An error occurred, please run Package Manager from the right click menu
WHAT RIGHT CLICK MENU???
or apt.get in a terminal to see what is wrong
I RAN APT-GET IN A TERMINAL AND IT DOESN'T SAY A WORD ABOUT WHAT IS WRONG
The error message was: 'Error: BrokenCount 0'. This usually means that your
installed packages have unmet dependencies
That alone, by the way, is not an explanation of what's wrong. The package
manager's and updata manager's job is to install packages and all their
dependencies, so if an installed package has unmet dependencies that is not the
source but the CONSEQUENCE of the error.

So, instead of giving me WRONG instructions of what to do in order to
retrieve information about what went wrong (which I won't get by
following those instructions), it should tell me what the hell was wrong
either in place or provide a clickable button to show it.

[Bug 1320551] [NEW] update manager systematically crashes because of a problem in a single package

2014-05-17 Thread Teo
Public bug reported:

I run update manager, and it finds an update available for a third party
package

I choose to install it, and it says the package is broken.
I guess that is true and that may be the third party's provider fault.

However, after this, update manager CRASHES, and that's certainly a bug
in update manager, because no matter how broken a package may be, it
must give me options for safely treating the problem (skip installation
of the updates, uninstall the package, retry, etc), but certainly not
crash.

[Bug 824304] Re: Divide by zero in find_busiest_group/update_sg_lb_stats (on physical hardware)

2011-09-02 Thread Teo Ruiz
One of my servers, after 219 days of uptime, crashed with the same
divide-by-zero bug, as I confirmed in the ec2 bug. It's a heavy IO
machine running a critical MySQL service.

I'm attaching the crash log I could get out of my messages log file.

There is apparently a patch getting into the Debian kernel that should
solve this, although it's a workaroud the divide-by-zero and not a
proper fix.

[Bug 614853] Re: kernel panic divide error: 0000 [#1] SMP

2011-08-30 Thread Teo Ruiz
Apparently a patch will be included in Debian to fix the 219 days issue,
as per http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=636797

It's for 2.6.32, but would you think it could be ported to the 2.6.35 on
Maverick? Should I file a different bug?

Thanks,

[Bug 614853] Re: kernel panic divide error: 0000 [#1] SMP

2011-08-29 Thread Teo Ruiz
Hi all.

This happened to me with 2.6.35-24-server, it is a MySQL (Percona,
5.1.54) machine running not so heavy load but slightly heavier IO.
Please find attached the crash log.

The uptime of the server was ~219 days, which is relevant according to
the original bug at the kernel.

Was the patch on this bug ported to newer kernerls?

Thanks,

[Bug 699886] [NEW] Strange date format in en_SG locale

2011-01-07 Thread Teo Kah Hou
Public bug reported:

Currently under English (Singapore) locale date and time are formatted
like this: Friday 07,January,2011 11:44:44 PM SGT

The commas are weird and it is not the convention in Singapore. Also
unlike other locales, it uses full day and month names.

I suggest that the formatting be change to something like: Fri 07 Jan

[Bug 119730] Re: Slow SATA performance

2009-04-27 Thread teo
Hi everyone,
i have the same problem with the symptoms described by
CarloBecchi, also with ubuntu 9.04 with the kernel 2.6.28
My laptop is a Sony Vaio VGN A517B, with a controller

00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801FBM (ICH6M) SATA
Controller (rev 03)

and a Hitachi SATA disk HTS541080G9SA00

During the use, copying moving files, the disk often freezes, and
becomes more slow passing from UDMA5 to UDMA2.

At the beginning these are the conditions:

t...@vaioteo:~$ sudo hdparm -tT /dev/sda

/dev/sda:

After some use and getting worst:

The last Ubuntu distribution, without problems for me, was 7.10 with his
kernel. One month ago i tried to install Lenny but the installation stopped due
to the long time of copying the system to the disk. Also the installation of
9.04 was one hour long.

A similar bug effect is the

I hope that someone will resolve this bug that seems to be historical

[Bug 314713] Re: linkedin very slow on Firefox Linux only

2009-04-02 Thread Teo Teti
I've reported the same problem.
I'm on a dual-boot P4 desktop and, interestingly, connected via a D-Link router
(DSL-G624T).
While under my Ubuntu 8.04 LinkedIn is so sluggish and almost unusable, under
WindowsXP all seems to work smoothly.
I haven't tried with any other browser than Firefox 3.0.

[Bug 254384] Re: Graphics fail in fresh install (Compaq EVO N150)

2009-01-11 Thread Teo
This might be a bit late, however I guess my problem is similar to the
one above:

When Ubuntu boots after the startup progress bar, the screen goes black
and nothing happens. Even Ctrl+Alt+Fn and Ctrl+Alt+Back doesn't work.

I observed that behavior __ONLY__ when the NVidia Driver is installed
and activated (at the time its newest version is 177 and I haven't tried
with the older one). If without the NVidia Driver, everything works,
however there is no 3D support...

I googled a bit and found that:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=118342
Perhaps the ABI has changed.

Enclosed to this post you will find my Xorg.20.log.

[Bug 310624] Re: f-spot doesn't browse by directory when View Arrange by

2008-12-24 Thread Teo
I double-checked the bug with Ubuntu 8.10 Live - CD and it's also there.
Connect a backup hard drive of your photographs, add two or three
folders (obviously, from different dates) and then go to View - Arrange
by folder. The timeline changes, but the images are still shown by
month.

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: f-spot

F-Spot
1) Release: Ubuntu 8.10

Re: [Bug 283182] Re: gnome-dictionary crashed with SIGSEGV

2008-10-15 Thread teo
Reproducing the crash:

I looked up a word in the dictionary but did not close it when I was
done. A bit later, I was working in another desktop on that machine
and opened the dictionary from the menu. It appeared to open a second
window for the dictionary (it did not have the word I looked up
previously in it, but was blank). I looked up a word, and a few
seconds later, it crashed.

Is this helpful information?

I will attempt mail you the backtrace when I am back on the machine.

Same here with a Maxdata Pro 7000x notebook.

If I use intel driver these errors are displayed:

(EE) intel(0): No valid modes
...
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration

Seems related to screen detection..
Any idea?

2008-09-23 Thread Teo
 * Is this reproducible?
On my laptop.. every time I use battery instead of AC current!

 * If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?
Simply power on the notebook on battery power and login..

I think you may need more info on my setup and/or hardware, but I have
no idea of what could be useful, please let me know what you want in detail!

This 'bug' never occurs in the past.

Teo.

[Bug 145696] Re: firefox and xgl cause 100% CPU

2007-11-02 Thread Teo
Hello all,

I am new to ubuntu/linux, so please bear with me :). I too am having
this (or a very similar) problem.

System:
Ubuntu 7.10, fully updated
ATI Mobility 9700 with ATI restricted driver
Dell Inspiron 9100 (3.0 ghz desktop processor)
1gb RAM

Here's what I've noticed so far... when Firefox is opened, Xgl starts
taking up all available CPU. Once I go to a website and leave the
address bar, Xgl calms down and Firefox runs normally. Whenever I go to
a text box on a web page (or back to the address bar), Xgl will peak the
CPU again.

Note: I just read the last post by Qilz, and I've noticed the same thing
(e.g., Effects on - Xgl runs fine; effects off - Xgl peaks the CPU).

I hope this helps,
-Teo

[Bug 132776] Re: gutsy livecd fails in booting w/o irqpoll option on Abit IP35-Pro motherboard

2007-11-01 Thread Teo
I'm having same problem with Ubuntu on a friend's PC, with abit ip35 pro.
7.04 live cd was not able to see any disk if set to IDE mode in BIOS, setting
in AHCI was the only way to install but the system was unstable.
Upgrade to gutsy and the system was unstable the same way.
Fresh install with Gutsy cd: install was flawless, but at boot, grub randomly
fails to load, when grub doesn't fail, system hangs giving error 18 and
something about cylinder,sorry I don't remember now.
Let me know if you need a more precise error report. I'll be happy to help.
PS
sorry for my english,I'm still studing it.

[Bug 133786] Re: Bus error when running Firefox or Epiphany

2007-10-25 Thread teo
I had the same problem:

$ cat /tmp/debsums.txt  | egrep mismatch|can't | cut -d   -f4  | uniq | wc
-l
134

After undoing the prelinking on my system (ie. setting PRELINKING to
no at /etc/default/prelink and running the daily prelink cron task) it
changed to:

$ cat /tmp/debsums_noprelink.txt  | egrep mismatch|can't | cut -d   -f4  |
uniq | wc -l
34

I'm also using XFS on the root partition and gutsy. I'm attaching the
debsums file after undoing the prelink.

My mouse is also freezing intermittenly. Is this also the cause of my
