[Bug 872172] Re: libcanberra-gtk0 should recommend Gtk2 and Gtk3 module to fix: Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"

2022-04-29 Thread Thor-Henrik Kvandahl
apt-get install libcanberra-gtk* did not work for me.
Upgrade to 22.04 LTS did not work for me either.

My workaround was to remove Firefox snap completely and install install
Firefox using apt as described below:

sudo snap remove firefox
cd ~/snap
rm -r firefox

sudo gedit /etc/apt/preferences.d/firefox-no-snap
add lines below:
Package: firefox*
Pin: release o=Ubuntu*
Pin-Priority: -1

sudo apt purge firefox
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt install firefox

echo 'Unattended-Upgrade::Allowed-Origins:: "LP-PPA-
mozillateam:${distro_codename}";' | sudo tee
/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/51unattended-upgrades-firefox

Kai-Heng, yes the root was ZFS, but it's not anymore. I have reinstalled
using btrfs on root and the latest kernel (5.10). The lockups have
stopped occurring.

Installed the latest mainline kernel but the system doesn't boot.
Initramfs complaines that zfs module is not loaded. Still works for the
LTS kernels.

[Bug 1901894] [NEW] One or more monitors turns off but system usable until monitor orientation change

2020-10-28 Thread Julius Thor
Public bug reported:

I'm having random lockups, sort of.

When this happens, usually one monitor out of 3 (including laptop
display) will turn off (one of the external monitors) sometimes both
external monitors. Usually I can spawn new applications and the system
is usable but if I try to detect the displays again or if I undock, all
remaining screens go blank (normal) but don't return like usual. I'm
unable to change to a new virtual console so all I can do is reboot.
Sometimes I'm able to do a soft reboot (with power button), other times
I have to hold the power button to do a hard shutdown.

I'm not sure if it's related but I get this error in dmesg:

[Bug 1834224] [NEW] grub change timeout not working

2019-06-25 Thread p-thor
Public bug reported:

after updating /etc/default/grub and running update-grub or update-grub2
the changes do not do anything.

The settings changed are:
GRUB_DEFAULT="0"
GRUB_TIMEOUT="0"
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT="0"
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true

I have mucked about with the settings above and they seem to do nothing to
/boot/grub/grub.cfg
When I change the 30 second timeout there after reboot I do see a change. So it
seems that the config generator is not working properly?

[Bug 165521] Re: font variants information ignored

2017-06-11 Thread Thor Michael Støre
Ran into what seems to be this bug just now. I'm running 0.91 on OS X. I
have four "Futura Std" styles installed: light, medium, heavy and bold.
They all show up in Font Book and LibreOffice just fine. In Inkscape
0.91 only light, medium and bold are available. I also note that for the
latter of the four the "Text and Font" menu shows "CSS: Bold, Face:
Heavy", though I don't know if that means it is confusing the two. It is
the bold variant I'm seeing.

The fonts in question are:
http://fontsgeek.com/fonts/Futura-Std-Bold
http://fontsgeek.com/fonts/Futura-Std-Heavy

[Bug 1604313] Re: Ubuntu 16.04: system freezes instead of suspend after undocking

2017-05-05 Thread Julius Thor
This bug is still in 16.04.

I seem to be able to work around this issue by closing the display while
in the bug. Let the display orientation update so only the external
monitor(s) is turned on, then undock the computer and finally open the
display and close it again.

But undocking the computer with the display open and then trying to make
the computer sleep will always make it lockup so that the cursor is the
only thing that's responsive.

[Bug 1654299] [NEW] Bootloader fails to install, then installer crashes

2017-01-05 Thread Gunnlaugur Thor Briem
Public bug reported:

Tried to install (from a USB stick) to an external HD connected via
USB3, on a machine that has an internal SSD with existing installations
of Windows and Linux Mint, and an existing Grub bootloader on /dev/sda
(and, subordinate to that, a Windows bootloader on its own partition
/dev/sda2 and a Linux on /dev/sda3, not sure about these numbers).

I wanted to overwrite my existing Grub with the one generated by this
installation, hoping to have all three operating systems available
there.

The installation proceeds, writing into the external HD, but then fails
on writing the bootloader, saying "the 'grub-efi-amd64-signed' package
failed to install into /target/"

I click OK (or Continue or Close, don't recall) and after that the
installer crashes.

** Description changed:

+ I click OK (or Continue or Close, don't recall) and after that the
+ installer crashes.

2016-12-28 Thread Julius Thor
I also notice that the display changes are not detected properly. When I
undock, there is no change in display orientation and I can still move
the mouse over to the other screen which is not there (missing limb,
still felt). When I run Displays ("unity-control-center display"), the
screen flickers and the displays get rearranged but are still detected
as if they are still connected.

Christofer, I'll create a new bug report as soon as I get clarification
regarding my previous question.

I have the same laptop and am experiencing the same bug. I have tried
upgrading to 4.8.0-30-generic but that does not fix the problem for me.
I did try and turn off all monitors except the laptop monitor before
undocking and that allowed me to put the laptop to sleep. I could not
wake it up, though.

[Bug 1618267] Re: RTL8821AE abruptly halts all network traffic

2016-09-01 Thread Thor H. Johansen
With the router in pure 802.11G mode, the interface just barely hangs in
there. When I run SpeedTest.net, ping times go through the roof, the
test sometimes gets stuck without completing, and the results are very
bad. Oddly, ping reports no dropped packets. Just severely delayed ones.

However, the interface does not halt completely like it does when the
router is in Mixed mode, and I am able to continue using it, seemingly
indefinitely.

I am running these tests with 6 feet of open air between me and the AP.
For comparison, some of the better WiFi clients in the house approach
the full 70/70 cabled connection speed, without even being in the same
room as the AP.

Devices that are working flawlessly with this router include:

iPhone 6 Plus
Huawei Nexus 6P
Samsung Galaxy S5
MacBook Pro 13" Mid-2012
RTL8192CUS-based USB WiFi dongle

I have never had any connection issues. My other laptops have been able
to remain connected with open SSH sessions to remote systems for days at
a time without disconnecting. I should mention that I now make sure to
ping my router, not the Internet, to check if the WiFi interface is
working properly. Since my Internet is reliable, it doesn't make much of
a difference, but this way, I eliminate potential error sources.

The USB dongle listed last was purchased today and is plugged into the
Lenovo as a workaround for WiFi until it's fixed. It works perfectly
fine if I use the rtl8192cu-fixes driver. I unplug it whenever I test
the internal WiFi for this bug ticket.

(Is it just me, or are all the Realtek WiFi drivers in the kernel kind
of unreliable? This is not the first time Realtek chips have given me
trouble.)

[Bug 1618267] Re: RTL8821AE abruptly halts all network traffic

2016-08-31 Thread Thor H. Johansen
Now for the WiFi bug report on the new BIOS:

The problem didn't go away, as expected. They wouldn't ship a machine
without working WiFi. This is clearly a Linux specific problem, which is
why I'm reporting it in the first place. If a BIOS flash somehow fixes a
bug that only occurs on Linux, the bug should not be considered fixed.
If the Windows driver is able to work around a BIOS issue, so should the
Linux driver.

[Bug 1618267] Re: RTL8821AE abruptly halts all network traffic

2016-08-31 Thread Thor H. Johansen
For others who come across this report, here are some crucial bits of
information about upgrading the BIOS on this machine:

1. Download the Windows BIOS update from the Lenovo support website.
2. Install innoextract (apt-get install innoextract) and use it to extract the
MS-DOS flash utility inside.
3. Get a pre-built FreeDOS image from
https://www.chtaube.eu/computers/freedos/bootable-usb/ and write it to a USB
drive as instructed.
4. Mount the FAT partition on the USB drive (e.g. sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt)
and copy the flash image to the drive (e.g. sudo cp app/1QCN32WW.exe /mnt/).
5. Unmount (e.g. umount /mnt), reboot and mash Fn+F2 to get into the BIOS. If
the system refuses to reboot, pull out the USB drive (MBR boot records seem to
make the BIOS hang if it's not in Legacy Support mode).
6. Change Boot Mode to Legacy Support.
7. Exit and save changes.
8. You should now be able to boot FreeDOS. Stick with the defaults in the boot
menus.
9. Type DIR to get a list of files.
10. Run the flasher utility (e.g. 1QCN32WW and return).
11. Let it do its thing.
12. You might get an Access Denied / Invalid Image error at this point. Don't
panic! Your computer is not bricked. Hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and mash Fn+F2 to get
into the BIOS again, disable the Safe Boot option, then Exit and save changes.
13. Your system will now boot again.

If you're installing Ubuntu on this system, I suggest you keep Safe Boot
disabled all the time. It seems to cause nothing but trouble.

[Bug 1618267] Re: RTL8821AE abruptly halts all network traffic

2016-08-31 Thread Thor H. Johansen
I will perform the upgrade, but first, a message to Canonical:

The tone in these canned responses and pages feel somewhat patronizing.
You get the distinct feeling they were written by a person whose
patience and good manners have been worn extremely thin.

They have successfully delivered the relevant information, but they have
also successfully insulted me for having the audacity of filing a bug
report without having flashed my BIOS first, because apparently, this is
considered bad "etiquette", and I should know that my filthy BIOS is
"buggy, insecure, and outdated" and how dare I even show my face around
here without taking care of such an obvious thing first?

Canonical may want to work on not insulting people who are trying their
best to properly report a bug.

As for bad performance and eventual halting of traffic, it's still doing
it. Messages from the kernel are, as before, deceptively calm. Just
routine messages about association and authentication. Not an error in
sight.

[Bug 1618267] Re: RTL8821AE abruptly halts all network traffic

2016-08-30 Thread Thor H. Johansen
Testing on the mainline v4.8-rc3 kernel, the first thing that happens is
that the NIC dies before I can even use it. Browser just sits there, so
I try to ping:

thor@thor-ideapad:~$ ping 8.8.8.8
PING 8.8.8.8 (8.8.8.8) 56(84) bytes of data.
ping: sendmsg: No buffer space available
ping: sendmsg: No buffer space available
^C
--- 8.8.8.8 ping statistics ---
10 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 28251ms

Then I unload the module to try to recover:

thor@thor-ideapad:~$ sudo modprobe -r rtl8821ae
thor@thor-ideapad:~$ sudo modprobe rtl8821ae

The modprobe kind of sits there for several seconds trying to unload
before it returns to the command line. Something isn't responding as it
should I think, because usually, kernel modules unload almost instantly.

So anyway, I now manage to stay connected, so I ping:

It kind of does this weird cycle with the ping times. It's what I saw
before with the distribution kernel, so there's no difference there.

I noticed that this bug has been tagged with bios-outdated. Should I
look into flashing a new BIOS on the machine? I won't touch a thing
unless instructed to do so.

[Bug 1618267] [NEW] RTL8821AE abruptly halts all network traffic

2016-08-29 Thread Thor H. Johansen
Public bug reported:

Computer: Lenovo IdeaPad 110
WiFi AP: Linksys E2500

After a few minutes of mixed Internet use, the WiFi hangs and the
interface ceases to pass traffic:

--- 8.8.8.8 ping statistics ---

rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 11.423/177.382/7227.733/806.648 ms, pipe 8

Before the driver hangs, speeds are 30/5 Mbps despite a 75 Mbps WiFi
transmit rate and a 70/70 Mbps symmetrical fiber connection in the
house. The connection and the router are known to perform better than
this with other equipment.

Forcing the router into 802.11g mode does, at least at a cursory glance,
seem to mitigate the halting problem, but speeds remain abysmal.

If there is any kind of technically involved tests I can do to speed up
the debugging of this problem, let me know. I have some experience with
embedded development in C.

[Bug 1577111] Re: RTL8821AE wireless adapter sporadically stuck (rtl8821ae module)

2016-08-29 Thread Thor H. Johansen
I'm facing a very similar or identical issue. I'm on a brand new Lenovo
IdeaPad 110 with the same RTL8821AE wifi chip.

WiFi works at first but dies after a couple of minutes. If you wait for
a long time it will recover. Ping behavior is similar to what's seen
above, except the error message is "No buffer space available".

Larry Finger's drivers do not fix the problem, nor does disabling power
saving through module options as described above.

I have a Linksys E2500 router. With 5 GHz disabled and 2.4 GHz set to
Wireless-G Only mode, the laptop's WiFi works, but everything is really
slow. The interface says it's running at 54 Mbps, but ping replies are
being delayed by several seconds. SpeedTest says 19.71/0.43, which is
the worst result I've ever seen on this WiFi network.

[Bug 1377336] [NEW] deprecating magnetic by default AMIs

2014-10-03 Thread Thor Nolen
Public bug reported:

Our EBS team has analyzed the customer behavior associated with the use
of the default SSD and default magnetic backed AMIs. Moving forward we
only see the SSD backed AMIs as being required. These will still
accommodate magnetic backed EBS volume deployments but by default
customers have overwhelmingly selected SSD volumes as preference.

2014-09-28 Thread Thor K. H.
Christopher, thanks for your follow-up.

I've installed the linux-image for v3.17-rc6-utopic (Linux thor-lincoln-
library 3.17.0-031700rc6-generic #201409211935 SMP Sun Sep 21 23:37:11
UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux), and removed my workaround
before rebooting the system.

However, the symptoms are unchanged and identical (to the best of my
current experience).

If possible, please advise any furthe debugging that can be done whilst
on the mainline kernel, otherwise I'll go back to the stable kernel (due
to easier use with Virtualbox).

[Bug 1371786] [NEW] Touchpad doesn't work unless middle-click is constantly pressed (on an Elantech touchpad, in a Fujitsu H730)

2014-09-19 Thread Thor K. H.
Public bug reported:

Issue:
Using a fresh install of Ubuntu 14.10, I discovered that the touchpad did not
work.

Steps to reproduce:
Install Ubuntu 14.10 on a Fujitsu H730 and attempt to use the touchpad.

Further description:
However, I stumbled across bug #1300427, where there was mention of both a
workaround and a fix in a newer kernel.
I have been able to use the workaround -- which is basically limiting the
protocol of the psmouse module, such that I remove and load psmouse with
proto=exps.

After this, a bit further in time, I accidentally managed to click with the
touchpad. It appears that the touchpad strangely enough works quite well as
long as I hold down the middle click button. While holding it down, the
touchpad seems to work rather well - including multitouch features.
The joy is short, as it registeres no input while depressed.

Things tested:
Due to the comments in bug #1300427 I've tested the mainline kernel version
3.17-rc5-utopic, and the only impact I recall was how the right-click button
now also worked while pressing middle-click on the touchpad.

[Bug 1300427] Re: [Fujitsu Celsius H730] Touchpad does not work on with Ubuntu 14.04

2014-09-16 Thread Thor K. H.
I hope in my changing of this bug's status I am not breaking any correct
path of resolvement, as I can confirm the same bug happens on the same
model in my case.

I've looked at bug #1166442, and tried step #137 to see if that dkms patch
would resolve anything.
However, the only remedy so far has been to use `modprobe psmouse proto=imps`.

[Bug 1166442] Re: Elantech clickpad/touchpad lacks multitouch features.

2014-09-16 Thread Thor K. H.
Regarding comment #137 and its effect, I feel it is worthwhile
mentioning that the ldtarball does not work for the ElanTech touchpad
within the Fujitsu Celsius H730.

There, the touchpad does not _work at all_, unlike here where multitouch
features are a miss. There's bug #1300427 for that issue though, but
these two seem somewhat related.

If there is any data that would be relevant to this bug, then I'd be
glad to provide it.

In addition, I would point out something weird that I noticed: if I hold
the middle-click down, the cursor functions fine. I can left-click while
doing the middle-click, and it'll be as if I'm not using the middle-
click button at all.

However, the moment I let go of the middle-click, the cursor stops moving.
I've attached evtest-log with middle-click (as the other one's empty), plus
Xorg.0.log with.

Re: [Bug 1348010] Re: psmouse serio1: Touchpad at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost sync at byte 6

2014-09-16 Thread Thor K. H.
Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a
kernel version where you were not having this particular problem? This
will help determine if the problem you are seeing is the result of a
regression, and when this regression was introduced. If this is a
regression, we can perform a kernel bisect to identify the commit that
introduced the problem.

Unfortunately no: the client is brand new and was installed with a fresh
image of 14.04 today.
Per an added comment of mine on bug #1300427, I've tested with mainline
kernel builds with only one difference regarding the Touchpad.

*Based on pure guessing and assumptions, it does appear that the issue
started for the few other users I've found after upgrading to 14.04, but
that's only heresay from my part and without any firm ground what-so-ever.*

relation to the issue that was resolved in

[Bug 1304001] Re: xen:balloon errors in 14.04 beta

2014-08-26 Thread Thor Nolen
http://marc.info/?l=xen-develm=135939492007293w=1

This option is incompatible with PCI hotplug. This is a known problem.
We recommend Canonical disable this option as does upstream. From that
note:

  Inside dom0, yes?

Looking at the balloon driver, it doesn't seem to handle dom0 (or domUs
with PCI devices passed-through) very well because it doesn't check the
memory map before attempting to hotplug additional memory so it ends up
overlapping a region that is already reserved. This is is particularly
common if you booted Xen with dom0_mem=max:MMM as the host's memory
beyond MMM is still in dom0's memory map (marked as UNUSABLE).

I suggest disabling CONFIG_XEN_BALLOON_MEMORY_HOTPLUG for now.

[Bug 966129] Re: Xscreensaver daemon crash returned to unlocked desktop

2013-01-15 Thread Thor S
Since this I've had this issue occur both on 12.04, and 12.10 (and on
Mint 14), so this is still an issue. I also don't understand how a crash
that unlocks my - specifically locked - screen is NOT a security
vulnerability.

[Bug 999141] Re: Dual monitor DisplayPort stopped working.

2012-10-08 Thread Julius Thor
Just docked my laptop and woke it up from sleep and it detected the two
monitors.

This was either fixed in the latest kernel or after I disabled polling
in drm_kms_helper:

echo N /sys/module/drm_kms_helper/parameters/poll

I put it into /etc/rc.local to make it permanent.

Tried DisplayPort again today and this problem still persists. I did
make another test, however:

I can get DisplayPort working if I boot the computer docked and
DisplayPort plugged into the dock. If i then undock the computer and
redock, DisplayPort will not activate again and xrandr shows no
indication of a Monitor being connected to any of the DisplayPorts.

I expected to be able to backup my IPhone 4 but instead the iphone
refuses to allow the backup.

Secondly, I read that the command idevicebackup4 or idevicebackup2 were
required for the iphone 4 backup but the command did not exist.

I don't know if either of these are bugs especially the second issue.

[Bug 999141] [NEW] Dual monitor DisplayPort stopped working.

2012-05-14 Thread Julius Thor
Public bug reported:

After I updated today using Update-Manager I can no longer use my
secondary monitor which is connected via DisplayPort. This was a problem
a few months ago and it seems to have creeped back into ubuntu? I used
to use VGA while this was a problem and I have reverted back to that
workaround. The image is considerably worse so I hope whatever broke the
DisplayPort code gets reverted back.

[Bug 954918] Re: Missing Server input box for Sametime accounts

2012-04-24 Thread Julius Thor
There is a workaround for this which can be used until this gets a
proper fix: You can specify username and server in the accound field
with a semycolon in between:

Account: username:serverhost

See screenshot in comment #5.

[Bug 979481] [NEW] Grub will not install, system will not boot

2012-04-11 Thread Thor Wiegman
Public bug reported:

Initial installation was 10.10 upgraded to 11.10. Worked well until
upgrade to 3.0.0-14 kernel then would not boot and had to resort to
previous kernels. This was the case for -15 and -16 kernels. But when
-17 was installed suddenly the Nvidia drivers wouldn't work and it
became impossible to boot into any previous kernel.

Tried a new side-by-side installation of 11.10 on the machine. But it
fails to install grub no matter where I tell grub to install to.

[Bug 954918] [NEW] Missing Server input box for Sametime accounts

2012-03-14 Thread Julius Thor
Public bug reported:

Hi,

It is no longer possible to connect to sametime server because there is
no Server input box undir Sametime accounts. This happened recently
and according to a freedesktop.org bug report this happened when
libpurple was upgraded from 2.10 to 2.10.1. Here is the explanation from
the freedesktop.org bug report:

With the latest version of libpurple (2.10.1) a change was made to the Sametime
protocol:

 + Sametime:
- Separate username and server when adding new Sametime
  accounts

Although at first this seems harmless and only affecting the pidgin client, it
seems that telepathy-haze can not handle this separation. When a new account is
created for Sametime, the server details are no longer displayed. Also an old
account (that has all the details already) no longer works due to the same
issue. Adding the missing parameter to the accounts.cfg file (mission-control)
causes that this parameter is ignored and removed.

Returning to libpurple 2.10.0 resolves the issue and the server can be
identified again when the account is created. - Raymond Wooninck

Re: [Bug 872209] Re: Cannot change display resolution or detect secondary display

2011-11-08 Thread Julius Thor
Hi,

It's sort of solved. After an update later on I was able to output to
a VGA so I can now use Dual head. I am not able to use DisplayPort,
however, but I do believe that a bug report has been made for that
issue.

I guess this one can be closed then.

Thanks!

Hi, thanks for reporting this issue during the development period of
 Ubuntu.

I notice there's not been further comments to the bug report since the
release came out, would you mind updating us on the status of it in the
 release?

Are you still able to reproduce the issue?  If not, do you think the bug
report can be closed, or do you think we should continue tracking it?

[Bug 817749] Re: josm is in the wrong category in the Software Centre

2011-08-23 Thread Peter Thor
Well I would do it if I knew how since this grew from an ubuntu distro issue to
a debian distro.
I am not sure where the source code/package for debian is located nor do I feel
confident in upstream development yet. I am targeting bitesize ubuntu bugs.

Then I would say this is no bug since JOSM in Ubuntu in Natty is shown in both
categories as intended.
Teej, can you confirm JOSM being shown in both categories, as intended?

[Bug 817749] Re: josm is in the wrong category in the Software Centre

2011-08-22 Thread Peter Thor
Teej,
thanks. I am learning bzr and developing in general. From what I see this issue
is probably solved by editing the file debian/josm.desktop to only include the
Geography category in the debian distro.

Thank you for your bug-report.

Which version of Josm are you running?
In version 0.0.svn3751-2ubuntu1 the category is both Education AND Geography.

[Bug 785101] Re: Unity: unable to remove the Apps Available for Download section

2011-06-16 Thread Thor Arne Kolberg
Sorry no, because Ubuntu wont let me make a screenshot while in the global
menu. :P
But press the magnifying glass with a + sign in the standard Unity menu that
says Programs (at least in my Norwergian version).

[Bug 785101] [NEW] Unity: unable to remove the Apps Available for Download section

2011-05-19 Thread Thor Arne Kolberg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

I am unable to remove the Apps Available for Download section. The
section is really annoying for normal use. We don't have to know why we
can download some random games every time we want to start an
application. Also, it makes my netbook PC much slower than with Lucid
Lynx.

[Bug 357673] Re: No notification when sliding audio volume, muting volume on ThinkPad X23, X24, X31, X32, X41, X60, T22, T40, T41, T42, T43, T43p, T60, R50e, R51, R52

2011-02-17 Thread Julius Thor
@Simon Pfeifer

There is no fix for that and there never will be because that is
intended and is hardware coded (as in; not in the software/driver).
Imagine if you are playing music very loud and you quickly need to mute?
What are you going to do? Push the Mute button once? Probably not...
Most people would push it repeatedly. No? :)
