[Bug 1905346] [NEW] USB devices, Headphones drives. And others like webcam not detected, as well as failing to powerdown

2020-11-23 Thread Topher Judd
Public bug reported:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1294526/unbunti-20-04-01-kernal-5-4-0-54
-generic-amd-3700-u-issue-of-not-shutting-down-a

this is explanation of main issue, I feel the usb headphones and drives
not being detected is a symptom. Also webcam is not detected as well,
and sound won't work at all sometimes. Meaning that it is started off
random and rebooting would fix, but over last month the problem has
gotten worse to happen multiple times a day. to where the problem is not
more normal state.

booting into recovery mode seems to do nothing. it's not hardware as
windows 10 is dual booted on my machine (asus zenbook um433d ryzen 7
3700U AMD) works fine,

I've reinstalled ubuntu which first install had similar problems
everything is fine first month then problems start happening. It
happened similarly here.

running usb version to test older version of unbuntu like 20.10 and
18.04 off usb stick sound and web cam work. However not sure if this
indicative of initial problem or not. But computer will not come out of
suspend in any version.

The problem is getting worse and I haven't found any real solution other
than upgrade the kernal because, or try a different distro.

Please help and let me know if I can provide additional data to aid in
this problem. My background is in Science, IT, and now entering web
development.

Thank you,

Topher Judd

[Bug 18780] Re: Browser: tree view rendering problem

2010-09-08 Thread Topher
I can't help observing that comments like the previous one probably
don't do much to promote a community where perspectives and needs are
respectfully discussed, as they undermine an environment of constructive
critique. It sounds like a user taking out frustration from a specific
experience on a group of people who are putting (at least some) effort
towards solving the frustration, and the use of general attacks like "I
thought Nautilus was pretending to be easy to use" and "scare away new
users" don't seem to add anything to a discussion of HOW Nautilus might
"pretend to compete" on this topic.

That said, Owlstead highlights the point that any visual miscues that
make Nautilus less easy and clear to use, runs the risk of making Ubuntu
less desirable to new computer users -- and that the same miscues can
lead to risk of file loss by hasty users even when they do have a great
deal of experience. It would be great if these points could be made a
little more constructively -- if for nothing else, then for the fact
that these bugs are public and seen and read by a pretty wide audience.

I understand that there's a group making moves to redesign Nautilus
altogether, I think something along the timeline of the Gnome Shell
project. I wonder if they have taken this long-standing annoyance into
account?

[Bug 550625] Re: Alps touchpad is recognized but neither gsynaptics nor mouse preferences work

2010-04-21 Thread Topher
Just a comment for clarification - my issue with the ALPS touchpad isn't
inability to scroll, it's an inability to use the syndaemon touch
disabler (because the synaptics driver isn't loaded), which makes it
difficult to type long papers. This was established in the xserver-xorg-
input-synaptics bug discussion before I was told that I needed to back
down to the kernel level. But to be honest, so far it seems like the
same root issue. Just wanted to add that input.

2010-04-20 Thread Topher
Heh, I tried blacklisting psmouse in /etc/modprobe.d/touchpad, but it
just disabled my touchpad altogether. :-) I checked Mouse preferences
just in case Synaptics might have loaded improperly, but there was still
no "Touchpad" tab. So I un-blacklisted again.

2010-04-05 Thread Topher
Thanks for the tip Mary. I installed the patch. No luck! No touchpad tab
in mouse prefs, no synaptics driver installed. Perhaps our hardware is a
little different. Either way, I hope this bug isn't going to be as
thorny as it looks... I'm resorting to a piece of cardboard taped over
the touchpad just to type now.

[Bug 553324] [NEW] Ubuntu One Preferences Spelling Error

2010-04-01 Thread topher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client

Went into Ubuntu One Preferences and noticed the spelling error. I don't
know if this is the proper place to report this, but I feel it's
important enough to have it fixed because Ubuntu should be as polished
as possible so my stupid windows-loving friend has less to lord over
Ubuntu.

Under the "Devices" tab

Current: "The devices connected with your pseronal cloud network are
listed below"

As a writing instructor at a university, I'd like to mention that the
sentence should also end with a colon, but the really important error is
the misspelling of "personal".

[Bug 550625] Re: Alps touchpad is recognized but neither gsynaptics nor mouse preferences work

2010-03-30 Thread Topher
Mostly same here on my HP Mini 311. However my device isn't even
recognized as a touchpad; it's recognized as a generic mouse, thus
there's no "Touchpad" tab in mouse preferences. When I try to activate
syndaemon it says that there's no synaptics device found, so there's no
way to disable tapping while typing... highly annoying.

Will attach my relevant files since my circumstance seems slightly
different from above.

[Bug 355330] Re: [Jaunty] Calendar applet popup opens under focused windows

2009-04-06 Thread Topher
This is not fixed for me, on a fully upgraded Ubuntu Jaunty beta system.
I have compiz package version 1:0.8.2-0ubuntu6. I noticed this with the
Gnome-Do application, which appears behind an active window when
summoned, and can confirm it also with the calendar pop-down applet.

I don't know what the "ubuntu6" part means instead of "ubuntu7". Does
that mean my update manager didn't detect a newer version of Compiz
available?

Can anyone else confirm that this is not solved?

[Bug 120402] Re: ctrl+x closes the window

2009-01-25 Thread Topher
Note for clarity: this bug happens when the dvorak keyboard layout is
configured but not currently the active layout; since the QWERTY X key
is the DVORAK Q key, pressing CTRL + X incorrectly triggers the CTRL + Q
shortcut (not W as stated above) even when the DVORAK layout is not
active.

[Bug 120402] Re: ctrl+x closes the window

2009-01-25 Thread Topher
This may be a gtk issue but it doesn't look like it is going to get
resolved anytime soon upstream. Is there any chance that Tomboy could
develop a workaround? I'd recommend creating an option to disable the
CTRL + W shortcut key. Tomboy's preferences window already has a
"Hotkeys" section, so this would be a relatively small change and there
are probably users out there (such as me) who depend on certain hotkeys,
but would prefer to disable the "Close All Windows" hotkey, regardless
of the state of this individual bug.

[Bug 307215] [NEW] Malformed anchor links when exporting linked notes to HTML

2008-12-11 Thread Topher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tomboy

This bug is actually result of a really useful feature of Tomboy: that
links are not capitalization-dependent. If you have a note named "Cool
Tomboy Note" and in a second note you type in "cool tomboy note", the
phrase will become a link to the first note.

However when you export a note with all linked notes to HTML (using the "Export
to HTML" addin), the note-to-note links generated in the HTML page don't link
correctly when the capitalization of the link is not the same as the
capitalization as the anchor.
Example: cool tomboy note
Cool Tomboy Note

As a fix, I'd suggest that all links generated in the output HTML file
are made uniformly lower-case. That will resolve any capitalization
differences.

[Bug 182601] Re: Export to Separate HTML Files

2008-12-11 Thread Topher
In the GUI, this could probably be reduced to just a separate checkbox in
Tomboy's "Export to HTML" plugin. Currently this plugin has an option not only
to export linked notes, but to do so recursively.
The only features missing which are requested in this report are:
1) - Put each linked note in a separate HTML file as opposed to appending to
the same file
2) - Add command-line functionality

[Bug 301473] Re: Some typing rows not visible

2008-11-23 Thread Topher
Update: I think I may have just found the culprit.
lessons.c spells out all the lessons in advance.
Lines 165-171 contain this particular lesson (lesson 10).
If you added an extra line before line 171 saying
"\x1"
I assume that would tell the lesson to push that extra line onto another page
instead of keeping it (hidden) on the bottom of page 1?

Just a suggestion. Again, I'm not a programmer.

[Bug 301473] Re: Some typing rows not visible

2008-11-23 Thread Topher
Hm - that would probably work. I think the best solution depends on how
extensible this application is meant to be.

If there is likelihood that there will be many lessons in the future
with exactly 7 lines of typing, or if the program is meant to be user-
customizeable, it might be worth adding a couple lines of code to detect
if a typing lesson has exactly 7 lines (ie if the last line will be
hidden by the status bar) and moving that last line to a second "page".

Otherwise, it's probably more efficient to either remove the last line
or add an extra line such that that last line isn't alone down there. (I
think there are a couple of 8-line lessons... and the last 2 lines wrap
to a second page fine.)

I say this all meekly because I realize I have little sense of how much
work would be involved in either solution. I'm not a programmer.

[Bug 301473] [NEW] Some typing rows not visible

2008-11-23 Thread Topher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dvorak7min

For example, try lesson 10 (keys P and G).
Because the number of rows of words to type precisely fills the page available,
the bottom row is hidden by the status bar (which displays WPM, % correct,
etc.) When you get to the last row, a new "page" of words to type does not
appear, because there is only one extra line to type - but this is hidden
underneath the status bar. This is the first time I've seen a command-line
program have a GUI problem.

This does not happen when View Keyboard is disabled.

I'm using Ubuntu 8.10.

[Bug 244008] [NEW] OpenOffice Writer autoscroll is too fast to be useful

2008-06-29 Thread Topher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Autoscroll happens, for example, when you are trying to select multiple
pages of text and you click and drag the mouse to the bottom of the
window; the scroll function activates so that you can select more text.
However, when autoscroll is triggered like this it scrolls so fast that
it is useless unless I want to select the entire rest of the document.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Open a multiple-page document in OpenOffice Writer.
2) Activate autoscroll by attempting to select multiple pages of text through
click-and-drag; or better yet, by attempting to move previously selected text
to a location on another page using click-and-drag.
3) Observe that without careful mouse positioning, it is very difficult to use
autoscroll to scroll to a specific page and location, unless that location is
at the very bottom or the very top of the document (where scrolling stops).

Suggestions:
-> A "smooth scrolling" feature would make Writer's autoscroll function more
usable, but could take significant resources to make this happen.
-> Autoscroll's default scrolling increment could be set to 50% of its current
value, making it easier for the eye to follow the scroll and easier for the
user to stop scrolling at the desired location.

Same here. FF3b2 and b3 were pretty stable, b4 and b5 have been
horrendous with Gmail and other AJAX-heavy sites. I find that Firefox
tends to crash mainly when I'm working with multiple tabs: for example
when I'm loading one tab and closing another simultaneously -
particularly if Gmail is open on a third tab. This behaviour is
unacceptable. I crash around 10 times a day, and I'm switching to

[Bug 144330] Re: Using funtion key to change volume of rhythmbox sometimes causes linux to freeze

2008-05-04 Thread Topher
Eugrus:

I don't experience that buzzing in Rhythmbox when media volume keys are
pressed. Instead, as described, Rhythmbox stops responding (although
music continues to play) and other windows may even be affected, like
Firefox, if I switch to them to wait for Rhythmbox to pull itself
together. The fact that other GTK-dependent windows also subsequently
freeze up if I switch to them, *could* indicate that the freezup is a
GTK problem...

[Bug 39854] Re: [Upstream] [hardy] OpenOffice should warn users before saving in /tmp

2008-04-02 Thread Topher
Good point, Chris. I've noticed that sometimes OpenOffice seems to act
as though directly downloaded documents were opened from template, so
I'd need to perform a Save As... instead of Save. But even if document
loss is less likely when used with an up-to-date Firefox, OpenOffice
should probably be more robust to preventing such (potentially severe)
data loss.

[Bug 194537] Re: GNOME automatic login freezes

2008-03-13 Thread Topher
Follow-up on this bug:

I thought I had found a workaround by disabling automatic login and
ENabling timed login. After I made this change, the problem did not show
itself for the better part of three weeks. However, now the problem
arises again, inconsistently as before: sometimes when I let the timed
login go into effect (i.e. I do not enter username or pw, I just wait
for the countdown to end), my account logs in, the welcome music plays,
and the gnome panels appear *incompletely*: the Main Menu and some
launch buttons appear in the upper-left corner as usual, but the rest of
the panel is empty and the buttons are unresponsive. Note that when I
had this issue in the past with automatic login enabled, no buttons ever
showed; only empty panels (sometimes) and the background (sometimes).

After some searching I found bug 176903, whose description seems very
similar to the symptoms I am experiencing. However, unlike the situation
in bug 176903, I did not schedule a FS check prior to experiencing this
freeze-up.

Additional comment: I am using an Inspiron 1520 laptop with an Intel
graphics card which was blacklisted by Compiz for problems. I manually
un-blacklisted the driver to allow Compiz to run on my system because
Compiz has presented no evident problems to my system so far and seems
very stable. However, it just occurred to me that this freeze-up on
login may be a consequence of Compiz not being 100% supported by my
system (although the issue has occurred even when I switched back to
Metacity). If this issue turns out to be due to Compiz being un-
blacklisted, I apologize for the confusion and inconvenience. It's
difficult for me to figure out exactly what package(s) this bug is
related to.

[Bug 194537] [NEW] GNOME automatic login freezes

2008-03-07 Thread Topher
Public bug reported:

I've always liked using automatic login to start up quickly, so
naturally I enabled this first thing when setting up Ubuntu Gutsy (fresh
install) on my Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop. However, about 1 in 4 times
booting (no pattern noticed), once Ubuntu loaded X and played the
welcome music, the login process would halt with a working cursor and
sometimes my background image loaded but no panels, no icons, etc. At
first I thought that Compiz was causing the problem, so I disabled it;
however, Metacity acted the same way.

My configured shortcut to start terminal (ALT + F3) worked when I tried
it, but the Terminal window which appeared showed no text, no menu bar,
and no window title - just an empty white box, the window border, and
the close/minimize/maximize buttons. No other hotkeys worked except CTRL
+ ALT + BACKSPACE which restarted X. On restarting X, if I tried to log
in again, the same hang would invariably happen; the only fix was to
restart, which usually let me in fine.

After a hang, once I restarted X and logged in to failsafe terminal
(which worked). From there I used PS to list the processes running. This
list didn't end up helping me (I found a workaround below), but I've
attached that list alongside a list of processes that are normally
started on a successful login.

I only realized that this was related to my using automatic login when,
after some research, I decided to try disabling it. That has been my
workaround; now I use timed login instead, which is no huge
inconvenience. However, this bug definitely seems like a major issue to
me if many other Ubuntu users are equally disabled from using automatic
login.

I'm using Ubuntu Gutsy fully updated on an Inspiron 1520 laptop. My
device database code is 8571d049b59a4f8a891c8a773a3b16e1 - please let me
know if you want more info.

[Bug 144330] Re: Using funtion key to change volume of rhythmbox sometimes causes linux to freeze

2008-03-07 Thread Topher
I can confirm this in Gutsy most recent update (I used the "Report a
Problem" menu so details should be attached). Whether using Compiz or in
Metacity, if I have Rhythmbox as the active window and I use the FN
volume keys or the laptop's frontal volume hotkeys to change the volume,

NOTE: I'm not sure what this bug did in the past, but currently it only
makes Rhythmbox (and any other applications I switch to) hang for about
20 seconds. When I test this in Compiz, the Rhythmbox window fades dark
to indicate nonresponsiveness. Then after 20 seconds or so it returns to
normal. As mentioned above, using sliders to change volume works fine.
The FN volume keys also work fine AS LONG AS Rhythmbox is not the active
window, or if I am switched to another desktop.

I'm running an Inspiron 1520. My device DB key is
<8571d049b59a4f8a891c8a773a3b16e1>. I hope this info helps. It would
make sense to me if it were an issue with GTK, but on the other hand
I've only ever seen this happen with Rhythmbox.

worth showing, why not just hide the arrow? This would increase clarity
because that way, one can easily see which folders contain subfolders
and which ones don't, helping the user to locate the correct folder more
quickly.

I'm using Ubuntu 7.10.

Package involved: Nautilus, I'm assuming. It's v2.20.

What happens:
1) While browsing folders, show the side pane.
2) In the side pane, select the Tree view.
3) Observe that every folder is accompanied by a "Show Contents" arrow, even if
the folder will display only "[empty]" when that arrow is clicked.

What I wish would happen:
...
3) Observe that only folders which have subfolders inside them are accompanied
by a "Show Contents" arrow, helping me recognize folders more easily.

[Bug 162371] Re: openoffice opening files over network

2008-02-28 Thread Topher
I can confirm this in Ubuntu 7.10 with Gnome.

When I explore an SMB or SSH share, I can open text files with gedit,
and my ability to move files is vastly improved since Feisty; however,
it seems I still can't directly open files in OpenOffice. This seems to
be the case regardless of the filetype.

While manually dragging files to the local desktop and opening is a
quick and relatively intuitive workaround, the ability to open remote
documents would increase Ubuntu's overall robustness and feasibility as
a complete Windows replacement system (as if Ubuntu's feasibility were
in question!) and, as Divan pointed out, would this really be that
difficult of a fix to make?

[Bug 194537] Re: GNOME automatic login freezes

2008-02-24 Thread Topher
Thanks for the quick responses, guys. The outputs you requested are in
the attached ZIP file. I'm not familiar with bug report procedures but
I'm learning as I go.

uname -a output:
Linux chunt-tacit 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Tue Feb 12 07:42:25 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux

MauroP: I had failed to notice the bluetooth-alsa difference, thanks for
pointing that out. I know that I disabled the bluetooth daemon in gnome-
session-properties weeks ago when I was trying to clean out unnecessary
processes. But to my knowledge, before I disabled that daemon it never
caused any problems; it was just extraneous. Interesting that it started
up anyway on a failed login.

[Bug 178620] gphpedit crash

2007-12-25 Thread Topher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gphpedit

Working on PHP document. When I try to do anything with the function
list in the left bar or with the '-' button which hides brace contents
for organization, the document will sometimes freeze, requiring me to
force quit, or crash. Please consider an autosave function so that even
if program crashes, it doesn't lose too much data...

[Bug 20449] Re: [nvidia] need legacy driver

2007-12-21 Thread Topher
Just to add to this discussion, I've been frustrated by the nvidia
restricted driver but Gutsy may have given me a cheap way around this
problem. I leave the nvidia restricted driver UNTOUCHED, left alone, and
I go with the generic one; then I go to the Screens and Graphics dialog
and choose a generic 1024x768 LCD panel. This gives me no 3D
acceleration but it still looks pretty good, and because I'm not even
touching the glitchy driver, I don't have to worry about freezups or
snow.

[Bug 160216] Re: Startup Malfunctions

2007-11-30 Thread topher
Brain,

Thanks so much for the response. I ended up getting frustrated trying
stuff, that i completely reinstalled 6.06 and upgraded from that version
by version up to 7.10. It now boots just fine.

[Bug 160216] Re: Startup Malfunctions

2007-11-28 Thread topher
Added:
I've reinstalled Ubuntu Gutsy, from scratch. I formatted both my root partition
and my home partition. The problem still persists. I'm going to try
reinstalling Grub, but I don't think that's the issue. If that doesn't work,
I'll install Edgy and if that boots properly, i'll upgrade from there. Please,
throw me a bone or something here. I'm really desperate to get ubuntu working
properly.

[Bug 160216] Startup Malfunctions

2007-11-05 Thread topher
Public bug reported:

After choosing my Ubuntu distro in Grub, the computer's screen goes
black and hangs indefinitely. I am able to Ctrl+Alt+F1 and I get a text
only display listing all the actions as Ubuntu now loads, but otherwise,
I'm unable to boot to Ubuntu. I don't get a splash screen ever. I'm
assuming that the readouts that I see go to a boot log and am more than
happy to post it if someone could direct me how to find it.

I don't know if any of this information is useful, but I'd rather err on the
side of more, rather than less, information:
Release 7.10
Kernel 2.6.22-14-generic
IBM Thinkpad R51 with Intel Pentium M Processor
ATI Radeon RV250 [Mobility FireGL 9000]

This is the entry in the Grub file for my Ubuntu:
title Ubuntu 7.10, kernel 2.6.22-14-generic
root(hd0,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-14-generic
root=UUID=e420b413-49ab-47d1-ad0d-c361b2469f0c ro quiet splash
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.22-14-generic
quiet

If more information would help, just let me know. Thanks!

[Bug 144321] OOo should detect saving in /tmp directory

2007-09-23 Thread Topher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Sorry, this is more of a suggestion than a bug but I believe it warrants an
entry here.
OOo could easily detect if the current save directory is /tmp in Linux, or its
equivalent dirs in Mac or Win, and ask user to reconfirm that he wants to save
to this directory.

Situation: User downloads & opens a form document in Firefox, choosing
"Open with application" instead of saving the file first. User fills out
the form and saves it for later use, forgetting that it will save to
/tmp which is periodically purged. Later he looks for the file but it
has been deleted.

OOo could prevent this easily by checking, when a user chooses the Save
option, whether the current directory matches /tmp or some relevant
pattern. If so, a dialog appears alerting the user that this is the
case, and offering to save the file in another directory. Option
provided to never show the dialog box again for advanced users.

Re: [Bug 63905] Re: mouse cursor disappears

2007-09-23 Thread Topher
I have Feisty Ubuntu (GNOME not KDE) on an Inspiron 1100 with Intel 845G
graphics chipset and just to let you know, the suggested mod to
xorg.confdidn't fix the problem. This only happens after the "Typing
Break" widget
break ends and normal screen is restored, but inconsistently and
unpredictably - although more frequently now. Any suggestions?

The latest backport of SA is 3.1.3.
Is there an update in the queue?

[Bug 63905] Re: mouse cursor disappears

2007-09-03 Thread Topher
I believe my issue is related to this one: I always use Gnome's Typing
Break feature and several times a day (but not every time), when the
typing break ends, my mouse cursor has disappeared and I cannot interact
except unreliably with some keys: sometimes ALT+TAB works to switch
apps, sometimes just the arrowkeys to scroll the current window,
sometimes not even that.

I have not yet noticed any consistent patterns about this problem.
Should I post this as an individual ticket or keep it part of this one?

[Bug 112408] Re: Mail Merge Wizard crashes OpenOffice

2007-08-03 Thread Topher
I just experienced the same crash - which I repeated a few times to
ensure I could replicate it - I'm using a Xubuntu install which I've
modified some but not hugely. I'm dual-booting Xubuntu Feisty on an
Inspiron 1100.

As I remember, on the orig Xubuntu install only Writer was installed; so
I uninstalled it and then re-installed the entire suite from the
repository. However since reinstall, when I open Calc, Writer, Impress
etc. it only opens the base OOo window, not Calc- or Writer-specific
with an empty document ready like it did in Ubuntu. Not sure if that is
related.. has anyone else here noticed that same thing? Maybe it's an
Xfce quirk.
