[Bug 1208993] Re: Ubuntu slows down and hangs while copying file from/to USB

2016-10-31 Thread ullix
Same problem on Ubuntu Mate 16.04.01 with caja, nautilus and nemo.
Moving only a few dozen files can take several minutes. Files are on one disk
in same directory tree.

Moving files with mv is almost instantaeous, too fast to measure.

[Bug 1636480] [NEW] gthumb 3.4.3 under Ubuntu Mate 16.04.01 does not show a menu

2016-10-25 Thread ullix
Public bug reported:

As the attached screenshot shows, gthumb has no menu, which makes gthumb
impossible to fully use, since various settings are only available via
the menu.

The screenshot shows multiple thin black rectangles between the toolbar
and the green "Persönlicher Ordner" line. which perhaps are some
artifacts of the no-shon menu.

This bug seems to have come up multiple times already, but the previous
solutions and workarounds do not work this time

[Bug 1306500] Re: some keys stopped working: left & right arrows, backspace

2016-05-01 Thread ullix
I have a fresh install of Ubuntu-Mate 16.04, and copied the home
directory from a previous 14.04 installation.

I had the problem of Gnucash with left & right arrows, backspace and
also delete not working.

Installation (and logout/in) of ibus-gtk alone did NOT help. I also had
to deinstall ibus! After logout/in it is working now.

[Bug 1458327] Re: Compiz on Ubuntu Mate 15.04 fails on DELL XPS 13 (9343) with external monitor

2015-10-28 Thread ullix
#Jason: strange that you say the issue persists, because it seems
solved in my case!

When reporting the bug I had on my DELL XPS13(9343) installed UbuntuMATE
15.04. I have now upgrade to UbuntuMATE 15.10 (kernel 4.2.0-16-generic
#19-Ubuntu x86_64) and both the external monitor issue and the suspend
issue are gone:

Using the MiniDisplayport-to-VGA/HDMI adapter (see orig. post) I tested
both an external VGA and a HDMI monitor (the latter actually a DVI
monitor DELL U2412M connected via a HDMI-to-DVI converter). I tested all
3 Window Managers (Marco, Metacity and Compiz). And every time I also
tried suspend.

In all 6 combinations both internal + external monitor and suspend
worked!

There was one glitch, though. Sometimes, when using MATE Tweak to switch
from compiz to metacity the screen freezes. Mouse pointer is visible,
but nothing can be clicked. I can do CTRL-ALT-F2 and login, and e.g.
kill Xorg, and it continues.

However, this is not reproducible at will, but I have observed it
several times when playing around with the window managers.

[Bug 1479817] [NEW] Libreoffice stalls presentation on 3-liner text block in 15.04 but not in 14.04 and not in 12.04

2015-07-30 Thread ullix
Public bug reported:

I have a presentation originally created in Libreoffice Impress, which
stalls at a certain slide. This slide has a three-line text block to be
shown via user defined animation by a mouse click. However, when
clicked, this text block is NOT shown, and furthermore, the whole
presentation stalls, i.e. any further clicks do not result in showing
further elements/pages.

The full presentation could be run successfully on every Ubuntu computer
I tried it on, and with various versions of libreoffice, and even runs
on Windows computers after converting to the powerpoint format.

The exception is my latest DELL XPS13 laptop with Ubuntu 15.04, where
the stall happens.

I was successful in removing almost everything from the presentation and
still show the problem in a very simple presentation, basically
consisting of the problematic slide only (plus 2 dummy slides). This
demo presentation is attached.

After the presentation is started, the first click shows the vertical,
arrowed line, the second should zoom up the textbox, but does not.
Strangely, when the third line of this text box is removed, it works.

This demo was tested on the following systems:
12.04.5 LTS, kernel 3.13.0-58, working ok
14.04.2 LTS, kernel 3.19.0-25, working ok
15.04, , kernel 3.19.0-25, NOT working (tried with Cinnamon, Gnome
Flashback, MATE desktops)

Libreoffice in all cases is 4.4.5.2 40m0(Build 2) .

When in the 15.04 kernel example libreoffice is started via the command
line, the following output is printed in the terminal once after
starting the presentation on first slide, and then the THIRD click is
made:

[Bug 1478994] [NEW] Libreoffice is no longer printing duplex pages

2015-07-28 Thread ullix
Public bug reported:

After updating libreoffice to

Version: 4.4.5.2
Build-ID: 40m0(Build:2)
Gebietsschema: de_DE.UTF-8

I can no longer print duplex pages (i.e. print on front and back side),
every page is printed, but each on its own sheet of paper. Libreoffice
is configured correctly as shown in the attached screenshots, and does
not give an error message.

The printer is HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus.

It had worked before, and a pdf file can still be printed in duplex.

[Bug 1460442] [NEW] Ubuntu Mate 15.04 does not allow to set a password for login after resume from Suspend

2015-05-31 Thread ullix
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

My laptop is a DELL XPS13, which came factory pre-installed with Ubuntu
14.04, but due to various bugs I have upgraded to Ubuntu Mate 15.04.

The laptop can go into suspend, and does resume from it. However, it
always resumes without asking for a password, and the Power Management
Preferences do not offer to set a password, neither for AC nor for
battery.

This problem exists for both Window Manager, Compiz and Marco. (though
the extra problem with Marco is, that is does not even resume properly
from suspend, reported here
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1454651

It seems to be an unnecessary use risk to use a laptop which can be run
by anyone by just opening (when suspended, but this is the typical use
scenario)

[Bug 1454651] Re: Ubuntu Mate with Window Manager Marco fails to properly resume from Suspend on DELL XPS13

2015-05-24 Thread ullix
Due to various other bugs on this DELL laptop I have upgraded to Ubuntu
MATE 15.04 (VIvid), using kernel 3.19.0-18-generic.

The problem still exists: after Suspend with Marco the desktop is
distorted. After Suspend with Compiz, the desktop is ok.

This installation offers to kernels to boot: one is marked
3.19.0-18-generic (upstart) and the other 3.19.0-18-generic. I guess
the latter is using systemd.

Resume from suspending under Marco fails on both, and under Compiz
succeeds on both.

[Bug 1458327] [NEW] Compiz on Ubuntu Mate 15.04 fails on DELL XPS 13 (9343) with external monitor

2015-05-24 Thread ullix
Public bug reported:

The DELL XPS13 (9343) came with Ubuntu 14.04 factory preinstalled. But
it has too many bugs to be useful. In the meantime I have upgraded to
Ubuntu Mate 15.04 (Vivid) with kernel 3.19.0-18-generic.

The laptop has only a Mini-Displayport connector. So I use an adapter
for VGA and HDMI, a no-name 3-in-1, model# 27391 from German company
CSL.

When the window-manager is Marco (Simple desktop effects) then I do
get a connection to an external monitor as it should be. However, Using
Marco results in a failure when resuming from suspend. (see bug report
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1454651)

When I use the window-manager Compiz (Advanced GPU accelerated desktop
effects) I get a proper resume from suspend, but connecting an external
monitor results in a black screen on both the internal and external
monitor. I can still see the mouse pointer moving across both screens,
but no desktop, no menus or anything clickable. Same problem for both an
external VGA or an external HDMI connection. Sometimes I do get a
picture on the external monitor, but with a few blank spots, and
everything is frozen, nothing can be clicked.

Switching to a terminal by CTRL-ALT-F1 still works, and gives a terminal
on the internal monitor.

So currently I can either have a working suspend, or a working external
monitor, but not both.

[Bug 1454651] Re: Ubuntu Mate with Window Manager Marco fails to properly resume from Suspend on DELL XPS13

2015-05-24 Thread ullix
Another problem, bug report here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1458327

When using Marco, I can connect to an external monitor, as one would
expect. However, using Compiz, both screens go black on connection.

So, can have either working suspend, but no external monitor with
Compiz, or a working external monitor, but no suspend with Marco :-(

[Bug 1456585] Re: 14e4:43b1 DELL XPS 13 (9343) Only wireless 5GHz works, but not 2.4GHz

2015-05-23 Thread ullix
Holy Moly! It gives me real pleasure to realize living in some kind of
forbidden world, like outside of North America. Channels 12 and 13 of
WIFI 2.4GHz are valid channels for the whole world, perhaps with the
exception of North America. There is no need to block these channels!

The problem was that my router was transmitting on channel 13. And both
channels 12 and 13 are NOT seen on my DELL, neither on 14.04 nor on
Vivid.

As iwlist finds channels 1...13 (in the previous I said 14? Not seen
anymore, maybe I had mislooked). This suggests that the clipping of the
2 channels may not be done by the broadcom module, but by something else
in the ubuntu configuration.

I have now forced the router to channels 1...11 and wifi works well.

[Bug 1456585] Re: 14e4:43b1 DELL XPS 13 (9343) Only wireless 5GHz works, but not 2.4GHz

2015-05-23 Thread ullix
I used mkusb following this page https://help.ubuntu.com/community/mkusb
and (without pre-treating the vivid-desktop-amd64.iso with isohybrid)
attempted another stick creation. And presto, it works!

Tried booting on both my laptops, the present new DELL XPS13 and an old
thinkpad T60, and it booted on both. Then it gets strange. On the T60
the menu under the panel network icon showed the WIFI entry, but greyed
out - could not be selected. With this laptop I had never an issue with
WIFI, albeit limited to 2.4GHz.

On the DELL, there was not even an entry for WIFI in the panel menu.
Looked into Additional Driver and found the Broadcom STA listed, but
inactiv. Activated, applied and there was the WIFI menu. I can connect
to my lan!

Still, no sign of my 2.4GHz signal from the same router as the 5GHz
signal. I verified with my Nexus7 tablet, that both signals are present.

Now it gets even stranger. On the panel network icon menu I see a signal
from my neighbourhood on 2.4GHz. Again, verified with the Nexus that it
is indeed on 2.4GHz. I can click on it on my DELL (but it needs a
password, so here it ends).

But my local 2.4GHz signal is better than -30dB, while the neighbour's
is very weak at -90 dB and still seen by the DELL. I believe this is a
million fold difference!

I inactivated my router's 5GHz signal, so that it would only offer
2.4GHz - DELL now doesn't find anything (except still the neighbour's
weak signal).

I tried to manually create my 2.4 network - no luck.

'iwlist wlan0 freq' finds 14 channels 2.4GHz and another 18 of 5 GHz.
But this may not mean anything? Is there anything to determine whatever
the wl module sees on 2.4GHz?

2015-05-22 Thread ullix
Christopher,

I used the xps13 to install this http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-
live/current/vivid-desktop-amd64.iso image on a 4GB USB stick using usb-
creator-gtk version 0.2.56.3ubuntu0.1.

I tried to boot the stick on 2 different laptops, the xps13 and an old
lenovo T60. On both I got:

Missing parameter in configuration file. Keyword: path

[Bug 1456596] Re: DELL XPS 13 (9343) Strange, seemingly perpetual repeat of drm activity

2015-05-22 Thread ullix
Christopher,

I am not sure I understand, what exactly you want.

On the kernels which I have tried so far, I got these results: (bad=the
bug exists as reported here, good= that bug NOT present)

3.13.0-52-generic bad
3.13.0.53-generic bad
3.16.0-37-generic bad
3.16.0.38-generic bad
3.19.0-18-generic good
4.1-rc4 --- good (but wl module did not build)

I am staying with kernel 3.19 for the time being - does not seem to have
severe regressions over the other kernels :-/

2015-05-22 Thread ullix
Daniel,

that part may well be what is tested at the other bug, however, this in
not the issue of this report. The issue here is that no 2.4GHz is
available with kernels, where the bcmwl module DOES build!

These kernels with working wl module at 5GHz, yet failing at 2.4 GHz are now:
3.13.0-52-generic
3.13.0.53-generic
3.16.0-37-generic
3.16.0.38-generic
3.19.0-18-generic

My problem is to get the bare necessities working on this f***ing
laptop, which came factory pre-installed with Ubuntu. How great; so
far the worst computer I ever tried Ubuntu on.

2015-05-22 Thread ullix
Nope, not booting.

I am on 14.04. Under /usr/lib/syslinux there is no folder modules!

I searched the whole filesystem, and nowhere is libcom32.c32 or
libutil.c32.

However, the two files exist on the stick under its /syslinux/

The menu.32 does not exist on the stick, but a vesamenu.32 does. I that
suppoed to be renamed?

I found menu.c32 under 14.04 /usr/lib/syslinux. I copied that to the
stick (to its root /)

Again, I tried to boot on the same two laptops and again the same error
message.

[Bug 1456585] [NEW] DELL XPS 13 (9343) Only wireless 5GHz works, but not 2.4GHz

2015-05-19 Thread ullix
Public bug reported:

This laptop came factory preinstalled with Ubuntu 14.04, but it had and
still has way too many problems.

I have now kernel 3.16.0-37-generic running. The wireless driver is wl,
installed from bcmwl-kernel-source. I have wireless working at 5GHz with
good speed, everything well. However, I can't connect to wireless on
2.4GHz.

Before I had kernel 3.13.0-52-generic, which had the same problem. I
tried kernel 4.1.0-rc2 and rc3, but both failed on installing from
bcmwl-kernel-source.

Trying iwlist wlan0 freq I get a list of channels 1-14 at 2.4GHz, and
32-66 at 5GHz. Still, only the 5GHz works. Other devices in my house do
connect well to the 2.4GHz (from a Fritzbox router).

iwlist wlan0 scan has no scan result when 5GHz is disabled, and finds one
network at 5.18GHz when enabled.

2015-05-19 Thread ullix
Public bug reported:

This laptop came factory preinstalled with Ubuntu, but due to problems
had been modified. Most recent apport info from a few minutes ago is
here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1456585

dmesg output is added. There is about once every second this activity:

[ 217.650626] [drm:intel_display_power_put] disabling display
[ 217.650632] [drm:hsw_set_power_well] Requesting to disable the power well
[ 217.682626] [drm:intel_display_power_get] enabling display
[ 217.682631] [drm:hsw_set_power_well] Enabling power well

dmesg output after cold boot, login to the desktop, starting the
terminal, and leaving it for a few minutes is attached.

[Bug 1454651] Re: Ubuntu Mate with Window Manager Marco fails to properly resume from Suspend on DELL XPS13

2015-05-15 Thread ullix
Ohh, Jeez, what have I gotten into with this laptop - my advice: if you
want it for something else than tinkering with kernels and drivers, look
elsewhere! And I thought, when it comes with a DELL installed system, it
will work. Slapping myself ...

As so many things I so far have taken for granted don't work, I thought
it is not a problem to ruin the laptop with untested kernels. So here we
go, with Ubuntu-Mate still being my desktop:

Kernel 4.1.0-040100rc3-generic :
Marco and Compiz do both work correctly after a resume from suspend
(but even after some - not all - cold boots, I had no cursor on the desktop.
happened with both Marco and Compiz)

With this kernel, there is no wireless at all! With the original kernel
3.13.0-52 I had at least 5GHz, but now there is neither 2.4 nor 5,
Though the proprietary Broadcom STA driver is still installed and marked
as active! Bluetooth does not recognize any devices, and even the
laptop, with its BT adapter name set to always visible, is not seen by
other computers.

Kernel 3.16.0-37-generic:
Marco does NOT work after resume from suspend, Compiz does. Same behaviour as
with original kernel. At least wireless is working on 5GHz (but not on 2.4GHz).
Bluetooth not working at all and there is no driver under Additional Driver
and non is offered to install.

Kernel 3.13.0-52-generic (the one I started with)
Wireless still only on 5GHz, BT not connecting to anything - though it is
behaving as if it does work. On some boots even the keyboard and the touchpad
isn't working, though an external usb-mouse is.

What a mess!

Though the proprietary Broadcom STA driver is still installed and marked
as active! Bluetooth does not recognize any devices, and even the
laptop, with its BT adapter name set to always visible, is not seen by

[Bug 1454651] Re: Ubuntu Mate with Window Manager Marco fails to properly resume from Suspend on DELL XPS13

2015-05-14 Thread ullix
This laptop is very new, and I see several (proprietary ?) workarounds
being factory-installed, and not available from repositories. I need
this laptop in the coming weeks, and I am very reluctant to risk
bricking it by toying with new kernels.

Furthermore, since the suspend fails to work with Marco, but does work
with Compiz on one-and-the-same kernel, I don't even see the evidence
for this being a kernel problem?

By the way, your link at the end is dead.

[Bug 1454651] [NEW] Ubuntu Mate with Window Manager Marco fails to properly resume from Suspend on DELL XPS13

2015-05-13 Thread ullix
Public bug reported:

I have the DELL XPS13 laptop which came factory pre-installed with
Ubuntu 14.04. I changed the desktop to Ubuntu Mate.

This had the Window Manager Marco (Simple desktop effects) activated.

Whenever I went into Suspend, the laptop did resume, but the desktop was
not redrawn, no panels, no menus and submenus, no buttons. When I moved
the mouse pointer over the places where I assumed the elements to be,
some of them did show up, and were clickable. After a reboot, all was
normal.

I then changed via System -- Control Center -- MATE Tweak -- Windows
--Window Manager from Marco to Compiz (Advanced CPU accelerated
desktop effects).

With Compiz active, all Suspend and Resume works correctly!

[Bug 1426893] [NEW] qemu-kvm virtual machines crash with some but not all ubuntu flavors when vmvga video is selected

2015-03-01 Thread ullix
Public bug reported:

I create my VMs with virt-manager and tried Video Modell vmvga in
order to let the VM use my whole screen of 1920x1200. This works with
some Ubuntu flavours, but others crash on login:

The host is Ubuntu 12.04.05 LTS, using Gnome-classic as GUI. All VMs
were updated to latest state.

All VMs run, when Video Modell cirrus is selected, however, this
allows only a max display resolution of 1280*1024, insufficient for some
graphics work.

But when running Video Modell vmvga (all being otherwise identically
configured):

Ubuntu Unity 14.04 .. ok
Kubuntu 14.04 .. ok (occasional crashes)
Ubuntu Cinnamon 14.04 . shows login screen, crashes on login (this VM
was cloned from Unity, Cinnamon then added)
Ubuntu Gnome 14.04 shows login screen, crashes on login
(installed from fresh download)
Ubuntu Mate 14.04.01 . shows login screen, crashes on login
(installed from fresh download)

Ubuntu Unity has such tiny fonts that usage is almost impossible. Only
Kubuntu is usable in that regard, but this crashes occasionally

2015-02-27 Thread ullix
This bug still exists with Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS as host and Ubuntu Mate
14.04.01 in the VM.

Using Mate in the VM with cirrus as video driver does work, but the
screen resolution is limited to 1290x104 - insufficient for some
graphics work. For vga it is even worse.

I am adding my thanks to #11 Philip Sz!

Your comment allowed my to get rid of the nuisance, i.e. adding the line
from #6 plus your purge command.

[Bug 1357952] Re: broken system due to libreoffice PPA upgrade

I guess this is in fact a dupe of bug #1354557 as a solution was
presented there, which allowed me to overcome my problem.

Follow the advice here:

[Bug 1357952] Re: broken system due to libreoffice upgrade

2014-08-23 Thread ullix
Unfortunately, this also is not helping.

I got the same results as Josir, but attempts to use sudo dpkg -r
$PACKAGE failed. I then used apt-get remove libreoffice*, which did
remove all libreoffice* stuff except libreoffice-base. Removing that is
not possible, neither with apt-get nor with dpkg:

# apt-get remove libreoffice-base
...
Removing libreoffice-base ...
No diversion 'diversion of /usr/lib/libreoffice/share/basic/dialog.xlc to
/usr/lib/libreoffice/share/basic/dialog.xlc.noaccess by libreoffice-base', none

removed.

unexpected (expecting fi)
dpkg: error processing libreoffice-base (--remove):

Errors were encountered while processing:

# dpkg -r libreoffice-base
(Reading database ... 225857 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing libreoffice-base ...

dpkg: error processing libreoffice-base (--remove):
subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 2
Errors were encountered while processing:
 libreoffice-base

Even worse, I now can't install anything, because apt-get (and synaptic)
insist on first removing libreoffice-base. This fails, the apt-get
exits, and nothing new is installed, e.g.:

# apt-get install htop
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
htop is already the newest version.
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  libreoffice-base
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 6 not upgraded.
1 not fully installed or removed.
After this operation, 7.234 kB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]?

Trying under Synaptic to unmark libreoffice-base has no effect, it
remains marked for removal. Since this removal is then attempted first
by synaptic/apt-get, and fails at it, nothing else can be done.

not alright; I now have 4 broken dependencies

after: apt-get update, an apt-get upgrade yields:

[Bug 1357952] [NEW] broken system due to libreoffice upgrade

2014-08-17 Thread ullix
Public bug reported:

The update of libreoffice from ~2 days ago (~ Aug 15, 2014) resultet in
several unmet dependencies. Running 'apt-get -f install' does NOT
correct the problem. Now the Ubuntu Software Center won't let me install
new software (via apt-get still possible).

This is wgat happens after 'apt-get update' followed by 'apt-get -f
install' was run:

~# apt-get upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these.

[Bug 1340613] Re: HWE upgrade not working in 12.04 due to missing packages

2014-07-21 Thread ullix
Oh dear, nothing learned from doing :-(

My system can still be accessed by SSH, but screen schows nothing but
could not write bytes, broken pipe.

I did:

sudo apt-get install libglapi-mesa

which removed a lot of stuff, and added a lot of trusty stuff. Also
removed was xinit (?) and google-earth-stable 6.0.3.2197-r0. Since now
2 out of 2 people had trouble with google-earth, I am wondering if this
has anything to do with it?

I then testet hwe-support-status --verbose and it told me that my HWE
is supported until 2017.

This was done BEFORE sudo apt-get install libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-trusty
xserver-xorg-lts-trusty was executed, so as far as I understand I could
not possibly have a working system, yet this was supported for two more
years???

Then the above command was also executed, and I rebooted. Strange thing
- it worked, but only 2 out of 3 times - the third time it would just
show a black screen. Done at least 10 times!

I then autoremoved some 206 *:386 packages, and reinstalled google-earth
(which reinstalled some 213 *:386 packages). But from then on, I never
could go onto the desktop. Booting into recovery mode still worked, but
best I ever got was a terminal login, but in the end only the broken-
pipe message was shown. Removing google-earth via SSH did not improve
the situation.

I noticed that /etc/X11/X (as a symlink to /usr/bin/xorg) does not
exist. Is that normal for trusty?

Fortunately, I did all this on a copy of my hard disk, and could go back
to my out-of-support going HWE stack. And will stay there until a real
solution is up!
