[Bug 1730411] Re: Multiple monitors wallpaper handled as only one big monitor.

In any case, this ideally is a WM issue, reading that upstream report.

** Description changed:

- Downloaded daily images for 2018-05-14 and 2018-05-15. Neither installer
- started the installation. Both the try and install menu options lead
- only to a live session without an install shortcut on the desktop.
+ Currently, regardless of whether or not you select "Try Lubuntu before
+ installing" or "Install Lubuntu," the standard live session is loaded.
+ One has to navigate through the menu to launch Calamares (which, of
+ course, if you don't know what it is, you don't know it's the
+ installer).
+
+ We need two things here:
+
+ 1. Fix debian-cd (?) such that "Install Lubuntu" launches the minimal X
environment and the installer, as it normally does with Ubiquity.
+ 2. Put a shortcut named "Install Lubuntu" on the Desktop that launches
Calamares for the people that try first.

[Bug 1768961] Re: xdg user-dirs not being read/stored correctly for desktop icon in left panel

2018-05-15 Thread Walter Lapchynski
Lubuntu Next is a product we never officially released and it's
unsupported. I did have an old VM laying around (18.04) and could not
reproduce this behavior. I could also not reproduce this behavior in an
18.10 daily (20180515), which WILL be a released version of Lubuntu with
LXQt (which was what we were aiming towards with Lubuntu Next but that
"product" was rather confused). Here's what I did:

 1. sudo mkdir -p
/data/scott/{Downloads,Templates,Public,Documents,Music,Photos,Videos}
 2. sudo chown -R $USER /data/scott
 3. sed -i 's|\$HOME|\/data\/scott|g' ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs
 4. logout and back in again

Maybe the file you're swapping in contains some invalid characters or
otherwise have bad syntax? Or maybe your user does not have permissions
to access those folders (see step 2).

[Bug 1769420] Re: Odd lxqt-config-file-associations for .jpg and .pdf

2018-05-15 Thread Walter Lapchynski
To be fair, "Lubuntu Next" is not a product we really offer. We never
did release it, except as an alpha/beta. It was often very confused,
leading to problems like what you mentioned. For the Cosmic cycle,
Lubuntu is fully LXQt. That said, you might want to use the Cosmic daily
and see what you find. If there's still a problem, you can file
something against lubuntu-default-settings.

Re: [Bug 1770442] Re: Suspend does not connect network

2018-05-11 Thread Walter Hugo Ferraz
Thank you for your response Joseph

I can not install an upstream kernel, because I use proprietary modules
(Virtual Box, Nvidea), and I did not find any extra packages for the
version, and as it is a production machine I will not risk it.

Let's wait for the normal kernel update via distro repositories, I'm
very grateful for your attention.

Actually I manually applied the fix, which allowed it to actually pass
along far enough to actually try to unpack the squashfs and that's when
it failed and suggested to install squashfs-tools. Reverting the fix,
installing the package, and starting over and everything worked just
fine.

[Bug 1770500] [NEW] calamares lacks apport per-package hook

2018-05-10 Thread Walter Lapchynski
Public bug reported:

calamares has no apport per-package hook, which means that when an error
is reported, little information is collected. ubiquity provides all
sorts of great info that can help diagnose issues. At minimum, the
Calamares.log in $HOME/.cache/Calamares/Calamares would be a good
inclusion.

[Bug 1769184] Re: I can't seem to upgrade to Ubuntu 18.04 from 17.10. It can't calculate changes.

2018-05-10 Thread Walter Lapchynski
>From what I'm understanding here, the OP, Rob, resolved his issue, which
centered around Ubuntu Desktop, so for all intents and purposes, this
bug should be considered invalid, given those particular requirements.

The other affected party, Nils, seems to be dealing with Lubuntu. I
cannot reproduce this issue. Using a fresh VM, for both Artful and
Xenial, I installed and let it upgrade like normal. Then I upgraded¹. No
problems.

That said, for Lubuntu, I can only conclude that something about your
system is inconsistent with a standard system. One thing to note here is
that at no point has LXQt been included as part of an official Lubuntu
release. That could potentially lead to the issues you're facing.
Perhaps we could investigate further, but not without additional
information. I would suggest filing a new bug, again with `ubuntu-bug
ubuntu-release-upgrader-core`. Hopefully it's not too late that we can't
get any useful information from it.

¹ Until the first point release, LTS→LTS is not supported through
ubuntu-release-upgrader, but requires using `do-release-upgrade -d`.

Unless you remove those dependencies, you can run into issues. Assuming

[Bug 1769438] Re: lxpanel-indicator-applet-plugin suggests deprecated package

2018-05-07 Thread Walter Lapchynski
Since at least Trusty, lxpanel-indicator-applet-plugin (which does not
appear to be provided upstream), suggests indicator-messages-gtk2, which
is not available. It also suggests indicator-application-gtk2 which has
a hard requirement for gtk2 while indicator-application is gtk3. It
seems that the goal was to split out the gtk2/3 versions. However, it
doesn't seem that indicator-messages (a package which is available) has
a hard requirement for gtk at all, so they may have just dropped
indicator-messages-gtk2.

That said, I think the solution here is to replace indicator-messages-
gtk2 with indicator-messages but it will need some testing.

create extra package dependencies, only add the needed package it to the

[Bug 1768961] Re: xdg user-dirs not being read/stored correctly for desktop icon in left panel

2018-05-05 Thread Walter Lapchynski
I changed $HOME/.config/user-dirs.dirs so that
XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Desktop/foobar" and everything seems to behave
fine, so I can't replicate your experience, which makes it hard to fix.
Could you start with a fresh system (maybe a virtual machine) and come
up with some clear steps?

Barring that, you might bark up the tree of libqt5xdg3 but there's
nothing about it, from what I can tell, that deals with the Desktop
directory different than any others.

[Bug 1768970] Re: Bionic: ubuntu-bug / apport not present

2018-05-05 Thread Walter Lapchynski
Lubuntu Next was never officially released, even though we had
beta/alpha versions. Additionally, the idea of having both a LXDE and
LXQt image is something we will not be continuing for the Cosmic cycle.
Instead, we will be switching over to LXQt entirely. It will most
certainly have apport in it, though we will need to do some packaging
work on the Qt frontend (apport-kde) as it's a little less Qt and a
little more KDE. That said, I've co-opted this bug for that purpose.

[Bug 1768294] Re: "eject" key doesn't open optical drive tray in Openbox

2018-05-04 Thread Walter Lapchynski
The file is ~/.config/openbox/lxqt-rc.xml. Since it's in your home
folder (~), you don't need to sudo anything. I'm not sure what file
you're looking at but it's most certainly not the right one based on
what you're explaining or unless you broke something. That said, there's
no reason why nano can't do the trick, but it might be wise to just open
it up in a graphical editor since it's a little more user friendly.

If that still fails then copy /etc/xdg/openbox/lxqt-rc.xml to
~/.config/openbox/lxqt-rc.xml and then follow the instructions above.

[Bug 1768294] Re: "eject" key doesn't open optical drive tray in Openbox

2018-05-04 Thread Walter Lapchynski
That can't be the end as that's not even a complete and valid config
file. Openbox would complain at you when you tried to run it. My guess
is that you're not arrowing down enough. Nano should say "Read 744
lines" in its status when you open it. That doesn't look like 744 lines.
:)

The sections are, in order:

 1. resistance
 2. focus
 3. placement
 4. theme
 5. desktops
 6. resize
 7. margins
 8. dock
 9. keyboard
10. mouse
11. menu
12. applications

I believe the keyboard sections starts at line 192. In nano, you can
hold CTRL and hit _ and then enter 192 and hit return and it should take
you there. You could also use CTRL W (or F6) to start a search. Just
enter keyboard and hit enter.

By the way, I think you figured it out, but the name of the file in is
actually lxqt-rc.xml for LXQt. I gave the answer for LXDE.

[Bug 1768294] Re: "eject" key doesn't open optical drive tray in Openbox

2018-05-03 Thread Walter Lapchynski
Actually `eject` is a standard part of the install and doesn't even
require the device name. Obviously if there's more than one device and
you want to open one over the other, it needs to be specific, but
there's always a default device. That said, the solution is fairly easy:

 1. Open up ~/.config/openbox/lubuntu-rc.xml in an editor
 2. Go to either the beginning or ending of the section
 3. Add this:

  eject

 4. Save and restart openbox with `openbox --reconfigure`

I'll add this to a future version of lubuntu-default-settings, but you
can do that in the meanwhile.

[Bug 1768294] Re: "eject" key doesn't open optical drive tray in Openbox

2018-05-03 Thread Walter Lapchynski
Actually, yeah, that 204 I got from some wiki page. It seems the
possible keycodes are:

$ xmodmap -pke | grep Eject
keycode 169 = XF86Eject NoSymbol XF86Eject
keycode 170 = XF86Eject XF86Eject XF86Eject XF86Eject
keycode 174 = XF86AudioStop XF86Eject XF86AudioStop XF86Eject

The fact that 174 is potentially both XF86AudioStop and XF86Eject makes
me somewhat concerned but it doesn't look like we're using
XF86AudioStop. It's possible some other user is using this and adding
something for XF86Eject will maybe break it, which is not necessarily
ideal. We could just use the specific keycodes (169, 170) and ignore 174
and let that be a known bug. That's probably my inclination and it
wouldn't negatively affect you, Fritz.

I assume you use `eject` on the command line?

[Bug 1763748] Re: Integrated Webcam Realtek Integrated_Webcam_HD (0bda:58f4) not working in DELL XPS 13 9370 with firmware 1.50

2018-05-03 Thread Walter Garcia-Fontes
More comments coming from DELL:

"Yesterday, a new Dell internal document was created which contained a
temporary work around to downgrade the camera firmware to 1.0 ( the file
RomainDurritcague shared ). This internal document is about to be deleted as
this fix wasn't meant to be shared yet. The document was released prematurely.
I've asked RomainDurritcague to delete the post which contains the file in
question. The firmware downgrade is a downgrade in features. We don't like to
downgrade our customers.
Dell is working to release an OS patch that will allow Ubuntu owners to utilize
the camera with UVC 1.50. The patch is scheduled to be released on 5/11. That's
all the detail
I have on the patch at this time. More to come.

2018-05-03 Thread Walter Garcia-Fontes
A solution has been proposed by Dell France:

http://dl.free.fr/uYeYUDXjo

Untar the archive and then go inside the folder, and you should be able
to execute: sudo ./rts_uvc -v 0x0bda -p 0x58f4 --download
170606_6BF129N2_58F4_v7605.rfw

It should say a huge "PASS" and after rebooting the camera should be
working.

I haven't been able to try it yet because I don't have my laptop with
me.

[Bug 1767899] Re: calamares installer crashes

2018-05-01 Thread Walter Lapchynski
Yeah #5 is not really a bug. It would be "nice" to have a better look,
but it's not necessarily a problem. I don't off hand know of a good
solution.

As far as the first bug is concerned, I've removed the cruft, but I'm
not clear how to reproduce this. If you could enumerate the steps to do
so, that would be great. Soemthing like:

 1. Boot with live image (include the version and such)
 2. Select (something) at the boot menu
 3. Click (something else) to load Calamares
 4. Select default options except for manual partitioning?

The parenthesis and question marks indicate areas where I'm particularly
confused about what you're doing.

[Bug 1768294] Re: "eject" key doesn't open optical drive tray in Lu Next

2018-05-01 Thread Walter Lapchynski
As far as I know, there's no binding in the Openbox configuration for an
eject key either upstream or within lubuntu-default-settings, nor has
there ever been. Assuming that the keybinding is standardized, we can
make it a wishlist item for lubuntu-default-settings, though.

As long as hitting the key in `xev` produces a named keysym (should be
XF86Eject), I'd feel relatively comfortable with that. Hopefully you get
keycode 204, too.

1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem.
2. The behavior you expected.
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

Beyond that, I have not seen a bug likes this in many years. If you
could provide additional information on how it affects a currently
supported release, that would be most helpful.

Confirmed on today's image. As if the bug wasn't strange enough, it's

call this incomplete until it pops up again unless there is suggestion
otherwise.

As far as I can tell the only way to upgrade the firmware is to
completely change the screen, at least this is what Dell is doing for
the users that report the issue. This is the new XPS 13 9370 laptop that
they started selling at the end of January 2018. And instead of
upgrading, they downgrade from version 1.50 to 1.00.

Dear Stefano, I think the problem is there is no appropriate driver in
the Linux kernel for the 1.50 firmware, and the installed webcam has
that firmware.

I'm trying now to recompile the 4.17.rc1 kernel with the patch I mention
in #2. I will try this patched kernel and see if the webcam works.

2018-04-16 Thread Walter Garcia-Fontes
I tried the following upstream kernel:

Linux XPS-13-9370 4.17.0-041700rc1-generic #201804152230 SMP Mon Apr 16
02:33:40 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

and the bug is reproducible.

[Bug 1763748] Re: Integrated Webcam Realtek Integrated_Webcam_HD (0bda:58f4) not working in DELL XPS 13 9370

2018-04-15 Thread Walter Garcia-Fontes
Another piece of information. This webcam is working with the 1.0
firmware, but not with the 1.5 firmware that the Dell XPS 13 9370 ships
right now. Some affected user have reported the issue and they have
changed the screen for them with a webcam with the 1.0 firmware, and the
webcam started working.

This is the non-working firmware:

And this is the working one:

[Bug 1761911] Re: Have to manually "sudo ifconfig eth0 up" and "sudo dhclient eth0" after every reboot

2018-04-06 Thread Walter Dietrich
Before I submitted this, I had run the following command, per the web
page mentioned above.

sudo apt-get install libnl-3-200=3.2.21-1 libnl-route-3-200=3.2.21-1
libnl-genl-3-200=3.2.21-1

After submitting this, I ran the following commands:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install network-manager

network-manager was reinstalled, and my server gets connected to the LAN
again automatically after I reboot. network-manager-gnome was also
reinstalled. I'd like to know if I can safely do

sudo apt-mark unhold libnl-3-200 libnl-genl-3-200 libnl-route-3-200

For now, I'll just stick with the downgraded libnl packages as I don't
want to have more networking problems.

[Bug 1761911] [NEW] Have to manually "sudo ifconfig eth0 up" and "sudo dhclient eth0" after every reboot

2018-04-06 Thread Walter Dietrich
Public bug reported:

I did an upgrade with "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade", and it removed
network-manager and network-manager-gnome. I could not connect to my LAN afer
that. I was able to find instructions for downgrading the libnl packages at
https://askubuntu.com/questions/727127/last-upgrade-crashes-network-manager-no-internet-connection-no-applet

I am able to get online again by running the following commands
sudo ifconfig eth0 up
sudo dhclient eth0
(Fortunately, I have a Ethernet I can plug in to.) I have to do this every time
I reboot. This is inconvenient as a usually use Desktop Sharing with another
computer as the client. I use an SSH tunnel for security. This means that every
time I reboot, I have to physically access the computer's console to enter the
ifconfig and dhclient commands to get the computer back on the network. I tried
to reinstall network-manager and network-manager-gnome, but the command results
said there were dependencies that prevented the installation. The fixes in the
web page referenced above do not help, so I'm reporting this as a bug.

Thanks for your assistance.

[Bug 1746806] Re: sssd appears to crash AWS c5 and m5 instances, cause 100% CPU

2018-04-06 Thread Walter Zulin Junior
That's good news!

I have tested both kernels in multiple C5/M5 instances (more than 80)
with SSSD and AppArmor enabled in N.Virginia, and I could not face one
single failure. It seems that this new kernel version fixed the issue.

It would be good to get more feedbacks and push this kernel release a
soon as possible.

[Bug 1755755] Re: Error in Mutt sidebar when mutt is started

2018-04-03 Thread Walter Garcia-Fontes
This is caused by the following file:

/etc/Muttrc.d/sidebar.rc

It looks like a remaining from when I used a patched version of mutt, to
have a sidebar. The sidebar has been now been added as a feature of
normal mutt, so probably this is not needed. I have moved this file out
of that directory, the error is gone and everything seems to function
normally.

So I'm closing this bug for the time being.

[Bug 1755755] [NEW] Error in Mutt sidebar when mutt is started

[Bug 1754174] Re: [Lubuntu] "Install Lubuntu" fails with several commands not found and permission denied

2018-03-10 Thread Walter Lapchynski
Adam, I'm curious about your Python statement. This only fails when
running Ubiquity directly from GRUB. Loading the live system and then
running Ubiquity works fine. Also, Ubiquity fails to fail for any other
flavours.

Things start going south in syslog here:

Mar 7 21:40:40 lubuntu ubiquity[1244]: switched to page partman
Mar 7 21:40:44 lubuntu ubiquity: /bin/autopartition: 292: /bin/autopartition:
Mar 7 21:40:44 lubuntu ubiquity: pvs: not found
Mar 7 21:40:44 lubuntu ubiquity:
Mar 7 21:40:47 lubuntu ubiquity[1244]: debconffilter_done: ubi-partman
(current: ubi-partman)
Mar 7 21:40:47 lubuntu ubiquity[1244]: Step_before = stepPartAsk

On a successful install from the live system we find a little bit
different behavior:

Mar 11 01:58:43 lubuntu ubiquity[2161]: switched to page partman
Mar 11 01:58:55 lubuntu ubiquity[2161]: debconffilter_done: ubi-partman
(current: ubi-partman)
Mar 11 01:58:55 lubuntu ubiquity[2161]: Step_before = stepPartAsk

Noting that /bin/autopartition is a script, I went looking for line 292,
but it wasn't there. It does, however source several other scripts in
/lib/partman/lib. Looking for only files with a line number 292 that
includes "pvs" in it, I found:

lib/lvm-base.sh:if $(pvs --noheadings --nosuffix -o pv_name |
grep -q "$device"); then

Seems like pvs is a variable created from enumerating the partman
devices and looking for ones with lvm method.

I'm not sure what this all means yet, but this sure is weird.
