[Bug 1080328] [NEW] On double click, Nautilus opens the file with the wrong application

2012-11-18 Thread wim sturkenboom
Public bug reported:

Observed behaviour
Assume I have a file called screenshot.png and double click it; Nautilus will
start the image viewer. If I omit the extension, Nautilus is clever enough to
figure it out and open it with the image viewer. If I'm however stupid enough
to rename the file to screenshot.txt, Nautilus decides that it's no longer an
image and opens with a texteditor (or attempts to).

Expected behaviour
Nautilus should use the file content to determine the type of file and the
associated application instead of extensions.

Reported for Ubuntu 12.04; also observed with an up-to-date 10.04 and
also reported to be the case on 13.04 (see
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+question/214355)

As promised the results for Ubuntu 10.04. It works as expected (although
on this test system mnemonics are not shown). So altB followed by 'L'
selects the first item in the bookmark menu that starts with L. If it's
the only one starting with L, it will request the page.

OK,

Please (try to) explain the difference between Ubuntu 10.04 and 12.04
with regards to this issue. After that, I will keep quiet ;)

Chris, sorry to disagree but under Windows 7 it behaves as expected
(items in the bookmark menu do have mnemonics and are accessible that
way).

Further, if this was a gtk+2.0 limitation, why do the items in other
menus have mnemonics? I might be missing something here?

I did check the other bug report (after your reference to the duplicate)
but it does not quite sound the same.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 913981 ***

Sorry Radu (?), I think you misunderstand.

I expect a mnemonic for each item in the bookmarks menu. If I bookmark e.g.
launchpad.net/ubuntu and the description in the bookmark menu is 'Ubuntu in
launchpad', I'm used to the situation where I can quickly access it using
altB followed by 'U'. And the mnemonic is always the first character of the
description.
If I have multiple entries starting with U (e.g. 'ubuntu forums' and 'ubuntu in
launchpad') I press 'U' till the desired one is selected and press enter to
load it.

If my memory serves me well, any version of Firefox that I have used
under WinXP, Win7 and Ubuntu 6.06/8.04/10.04 behaved like this. It's now
with Ubuntu 12.04 in combination with Firefox 15.0.1 that this
functionality has changed. I will check a standard and up-to-date 10.04
install tomorrow (time permitting) and post back in about 12 hours.

Very sorry that I forgot to mention this. Same version of Firefox under
Windows does not suffer from this problem. This is Ubuntu (or Linux)
specific.

[Bug 1059773] [NEW] Incorrect information in man page of cvt

2012-10-01 Thread wim sturkenboom
Public bug reported:

Not a software bug but highly annoying.

From 'man cvt':
OPTIONS
refresh Provide a vertical refresh rate in kHz. The CVT standard
prefers either 50.0, 60.0, 75.0 or 85.0kHz. The
   default is 60.0kHz.

Problem:
Unfortunately vertical refresh rates are expressed in Hz, not in kHz.

Ubuntu 12.04 (64bit but I don't think it matters).

Possible package: xorg-server

Note: man pages on the web are also incorrect; e.g.
http://linux.die.net/man/1/cvt

[Bug 690352] Re: package snmpd 5.4.2.1~dfsg0ubuntu1-0ubuntu2.1 failed to install/upgrade:

2010-12-23 Thread wim sturkenboom
Thanks for the feedback.

This was part of an online upgrade from 8.04 to 10.04 (as stated
earlier). Not able to reproduce as the whole upgrade eventually resulted
in a 'busybox' computer after reboot and I did a fresh install of 10.04.

From your comment I understand that it's basically a bug in the upgrade
application as that should check if process are running, kill them and
only then delete the 'snmp' user.

Please treat this bug accordingly as a normal Ubuntu user should not
have to go through these steps to kill processes during an upgrade
process of the OS.

[Bug 671035] [NEW] eog crashed with SIGSEGV in gnome_vfs_mime_get_description()

2010-11-04 Thread wim sturkenboom
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: eog

Earlier reported as
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/eog/+bug/669982; this time
reported using the crash file.

Double click a jpeg in a directory with a percentage-sign in its name
ps -ef shows the command like 'eog file:///home/wim/jpeg_100%25/IMGP8120.jpg'

If one accesses the properties (file menu - properties), the application
crashes.
Running from command line

w...@desktop1:~$ eog file:///home/wim/jpeg_100%25/IMGP8120.jpg
Segmentation fault
w...@desktop1:~$

Note that the coredump relates to another path

Please note that
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/eog/+bug/204513 seems very
similar (also % signs)

[Bug 669982] [NEW] segmentation fault when attempting to view EXIF information

2010-11-02 Thread wim sturkenboom
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: eog

Double click a jpeg in a directory with a percentage-sign in its name
ps -ef shows the command like 'eog file:///home/wim/jpeg_100%25/IMGP8120.jpg'

If one accesses the properties (file menu - properties), the application
crashes.
Running from command line

w...@desktop1:~$ eog file:///home/wim/jpeg_100%25/IMGP8120.jpg
Segmentation fault
w...@desktop1:~$

The problem occurs when the path to the file contains a percentage sign
(in this case jpeg_100%); I assume that the additional 25 is now part of
%25 representing the percentage sign.

Further info:
Ubuntu 8.04 LTS

Workaround:
Don't use stupid percentage sign ;)
