I have the same problem with Ubuntu 10.04 with all the updated packages installed. It just can't do any intensive tasks. It just freezes after doing some multimedia tasks or simply having opened too many tabs in my firefox. I'm moving back to Windows 7 as well... :( Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 were fine. I have the same problem with Dell Vostro 1088 for shutdown and restart. For clicking restart, I can turn off the computer by pressing the power button when it freezes at the restart splash screen. But still the internal speakers / headphones and the external speakers love to work simultaneously. I've tried OSS in Jaunty before I updated to Karmic.
