[Bug 382379] Re: pdftops CUPS filter has several problems

2011-02-18 Thread zcat
Is this fixed? Less than a month ago I installed 10.04 on a compaq
laptop, printing to a network laser printer (can't recall the model).
Everything fully up to date at the time, but it's printing PDF's at
glacial speed and holding up everyone else's print jobs. Windows users
in the same office have no problems (except when an ubuntu printjob is
blocking them)

It's been a problem for a while, I was hoping a fresh install of 10.04
would fix it, previous laptop was still running 9.10 and also had the
same problem.

If I just update 10.04 will the problem fix itself now? Or should I try
the poppler workaround mentioned earlier?

[Bug 22007] Re: no 'Settings' button in gnome-screensaver

2010-09-07 Thread zcat
Back when I first started running Ubuntu the screensavers _WERE_
configurable.

So was the login window.

I could choose what application ran when I inserted a DVD, eg have it
run dvd:rip rather than the small number of programs that Ubuntu has
deemed an acceptable 'player' for DVDs.

I could configure dial-up networking, and it worked on all the ISP's I
ever needed to use it with.

It's not just this bug, but this bug is one glaring example of the whole
problem.

This obsession with removing all of the configurability is driving
people away from Ubuntu. You're perpetuating the myth (by making it not
a myth at all) that either Linux is greatly inferior to Windows because
it has so fewer options, or that nothing useful can be done in Linux
without resorting to a terminal.

Please. Fix this BUG.

[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

2010-03-18 Thread zcat
http://blog.internetnews.com/apatrizio/do-not-want-dog.jpg

I've read through most of the comments and justification but I still think this
change is MAJOR FAIL. Please revert.
I've been working very, very hard to fix Bug #1 and this sort of change is
probably the most destructive thing you could possibly have done. Nobody I've
spoken to likes this change, no matter how you may justify it. You may as well
have changed the default keyboard layout to dvorak!

Re: [Bug 307363] Re: USB issues with MP4 player (anyka pmp2501 4GB)

2010-03-11 Thread zcat
As mentioned earlier, I decided it was working about as well in Linux
as it did in any other OS so any issues were simply due to very poor
design of the mp3 player. It died a short while later so I am unable
to provide any further information. Feel free to consider this bug
'closed'

Re: [Bug 152885] Re: USB unknown partition table

2009-03-22 Thread zcat
Looking at the changes between v2.6.21 and v2.6.27 I see this. It may
explain why v2.6.21 works and Intrepid (v2.6.27) doesn't:

Just to clarify; My mpx player is still working 'acceptably' in Hardy,
Intrepid and the Jaunty beta. That is to say it appears on the desktop
and opens automatically and I can transfer files in both directions.

Vast numbers of IO errors and retries show up in the logs,
occasionally it disconnects itself, and file transfers are much slower
than for other players and USB devices. However the player performs
just as poorly under Windows, so I've concluded that this is a result
of bad design in the player and it's probably not possible to make it
work any better than it currently does.

I consider the bug 'fixed'

for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Not going to well in Jaunty either; this is an attempt to convert an
FLV (which it has no trouble playing) to ogg theora/vorbis with
otherwise default settings. It seems to get stuck in an endless loop.

[Bug 209794] Re: Clear Private Data does not clear private data from the Awesome Bar's Rich Results list

2009-01-11 Thread zcat
OK, I've cleared history and agree that only bookmarks remain. It does
seem that they're arranged in 'most visited' order which some people
would argue is still history that should have been erased.

I can also see the point that if I have some dodgy pornsite buried three
folders deep in my bookmarks, I do NOT want that appearing on the screen
simply because I started to type some other similar URL.

Perhaps we need an option 'don't show bookmarks in awesomebar' - that's
a wishlist item though.

Other than that, I'm happy enough that 'erase history' is doing what it
should. Anybody wanting more privacy probably needs to set up a
different profile for doing dodgy stuff where no history is ever saved
in the first place.

[Bug 152885] Re: USB unknown partition table

2008-12-11 Thread zcat
Time for me to eat some humble pie; my mp3 player does work in Intrepid,
it just doesn't work in whatever passes for a recent kernel in Hardy. I
guess it's time to upgrade...

Also the problem _was_ much worse than just not mounting. I later
noticed that the kernel was spewing all kinds of USB errors and the
filesystem on the mp3 player ended up horribly corrupted.. I have yet to
test this thoroughly in intrepid.

[Bug 307363] [NEW] USB issues with MP4 player (anyka pmp2501 4GB)

2008-12-11 Thread zcat
Public bug reported:

In hardy, the player doesn't mount automatically, 'mount -t auto' fails,
'mount -t vfat' works. Weird filesystem, I think?

In Intrepid (kernel 2.6.27-9-generic) the player mounts automatically,
but still has problems.

Once mounted, any attempt to access the player (read or write) generates
vast numbers of errors. Behaviour is identical on two brand new players
and they do not appear to have any issues operating in Windows XP, so
this is 'normal behaviour' for the device, not a faulty unit.

[Bug 152885] Re: USB unknown partition table

2008-12-08 Thread zcat
The kernel developers attitude on this bugs me. A brief summary;

1) The device works perfectly in Windows and OSX, but not in Linux

2) The reason seems to be very simple. The device return 'garbage' data
on the first read, and the real data on subsequent reads. Linux uses the
first read. Windows and OSX ignore it and read again to get the 'real'
data.

3) The fix seems painfully obvious; do what Windows does.

4) The kernel developers apparently won't fix this because the USB
standard says devices shouldn't behave this way. They want to follow the
standard 'to the letter' even though this differs from the actual
implementation used in the the two major OSes and apparently as
implemented a non-trivial number of devices.

SO: Can someone who doesn't have a stick up their ass please provide a
patch against a recent kernel that performs a 'garbage' read or two from
USB mass-storage devices before probing for the real data, so that I can
actually use my new MP3 player without having to open a root shell every
time, please?

[Bug 298522] [NEW] gimp-svg freezes desktop (when inkscape is also running?)

2008-11-15 Thread zcat
Public bug reported:

When importing an SVG file (two different fairly simple svg files so
far, importing to 'reasonable' resolutions eg 330x310 or 800x1200), GIMP
will cause everything else on the desktop to stop working. I can still
move the mouse and drag windows about but window contents and clock
don't update, I can't open menus or alt-F2 to launch a new program,
close windows via gui or alt-F4.

I can ctrl-alt-F1 to a terminal and log in there. In text mode
everything is still totally responsive, top shows normal CUP and memory
usage, pstree shows a process named 'svg'. If I kill svg and return to
the desktop everything works again.

Originally I thought this was 'random' but after playing around a little it
might depend on Inkscape also being open.
The freeze is not completely random, usually if it's happened once it will
continue to happen for the next three or four attempts and then not happen
again for a while.

And consistent with Murphy's law, it will of course happen when attempting to
demonstrate the ease of use and stability of the Ubuntu desktop in front of a
roomful of people...

[Bug 73449] Re: VLC crashed when trying to encode to Theora and FLAC

2008-09-20 Thread zcat
I notice in the VLC 'wizzard' it says it's not really suited to
transcoding ,more just for capturing network streams. I've been using
different tools to encode ogg video so not really bothered any more by
vlc's ability or lack thereof..

Would still be nice to get this fixed so I'll fire up VLC on my other
box (this one's runing gNewSense now!) and see if there's still a
problem with an up to date hardy.

If mumble needs libqt4-sql-sqlite to run, then surely the mumble package
should list the libqt4-sql-sqlite package as a dependency?

Anyhow.. I just ran into this problem for myself and only found the
answer by a google search. Can somebody fix this please? (do whatever is
required so that n00bs can apt-get install mumble and have it work as
expected right away, without needing to google error messages and
install dependencies by hand)

are libsql and libsqlite supposed to be the same thing?

Re: [Bug 191475] Re: [hardy] media tab in file management preferences missing applications

2008-07-07 Thread zcat
I'm not sure how different packages identify themselves as being a media
player; perhaps this bug should be filed against the VLC package for not
registering itself somwhere?

I still want an option at the bottom of the list Run this command so I can
have some completely different program start, such as k9copy..

And I still want the menu to be duplicated under System Preferences
Removable Drives and Media where it used to be. I still strongly believe
that's the most 'intuitive' place people will look for it. And even if it
wasn't, I also think that it's not a good idea for Ubuntu to make such
confusing changes to the interface just when we're starting to get
'non-geeks' learning to use the OS.

2008/7/8 Philippe Piquer [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

I also had to dig deep into Google to find a correct answer (at least one
 that work) for VLC.
So resolving this important for Mr Everybody.

2008-05-09 Thread zcat
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 191475 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/191475

The whole thing is stupid. There are sound underlying architectural
changes to the virtual filesystem, however, the moving of the media from
g-v-m to nautilus was wrong imo. Media should not be put in the same
 paradigm as files.

I can partly see the logic in this; deciding if there's a disk, and if it's
CD or DVD should probably be in gvf. What's on the disk (DVD or VCD video
files) should probably be in Nautilus.

The dialog should absolutely still be easy to find; the properties dialog
when you right-click the disk on the desktop would be a logical place (and
it should allow you to set actions for all recognisable disk types, not just
whatever happens to be in the drive right now)

The dialog also needs to go back on the removable drives and media tab.
That's absolutely a logical place for people to go looking for it.

I made my comments known on the relevant nautilus bug list, but the
developers know best and blame my viewpoint on an inability to change
rather than their bad design decision.

The gnome developers need to rethink what they're doing. You don't make
gnome more user friendly by removing or hiding all the options, you make it
userfriendly by putting the options in the place that users would most
naturally expect to find them! It doesn't hurt to have a dialog accessable
on two different menus either, if both places are somewhere a user is very
likely to look.

could you stop commenting on a duplicate bug? upstream didn't change
things to annoy users or similar, they just did a lot of architecture
work this cycle and focussed on getting things working so they didn't
focus yet on the interface, that's likely going to be changed next
cycle, could you be constructive rather?

'Upstream' make it quite clear in the discussion referenced that they DO
think removing the ability to configure this, or at least hiding it, is a
usability improvement. Their attitude is quite clear, and AFIAC quite wrong.

And I still don't accept that my bug is a duplicate of that bug. I don't
even have a 'file management' entry in preferences. I'm not complaining that
options are missing from a dialog, I'm complaining that an entire dialog for
an option I would like to be able to reconfigure and which I felt was
already in the most intuative possible place it could be, has been removed
for no apparent reason. I'll settle for them moving it to the CD properties.
I won't settle for we know best, you're too stupid to know what media
player you want to use

No it isn't. I have read that bug report and I do not think it's talking
about the same issue at all.

In Gutsy I used to have options of what media player would start when I
inserted a DVD, VCD, or audio CD. The problem is NOT that players aren't
being detected. The problem is that the entire Media tab been
COMPLETELY REMOVED from the Drives and Devices dialog.

That's where it used to be.

That seems to be the most logical place for it.

Will somebody please put it back? Or tell me how so that at least MY

No, not the same place, but the manual setting is likely to be
reintroduced in Nautilus in the next GNOME release; there's probably
stuff that needs to be taken care of before that happens.

Thank you for at least explaining why it has changed.

I'm getting very frustrated with the gnome philosophy users are stupid and
confused by options, so removing all the options makes gnome more user
friendly. I'm happy to know that in this case at least, it's not just
because somebody decided to make things less configurable for no good
reason..

[Bug 221330] [NEW] [hardy] Cannot change default player for DVDs

2008-04-24 Thread zcat
Public bug reported:

In previous versions of Ubuntu, I was able to change the default media
player that started when I inserted a DVD, VCD or CD individually, under
system preferences removable drives and media

The tab has been removed and I cannot find any way of changing the
default program that starts when I insert a DVD, the only options I have
now (hidden away in Nautilus's settings) are Ask or open or do
nothing or totem

There also seems to be an option is Preferred Applications for default
media player, but it has only two fixed options and one 'custom' and
doesn't seem to have any effect on the player that comes up when I
insert a DVD.

How do I reconfigure my system so that when I insert a DVD, it plays in
VLC, when I insert a CD it plays in Rhythmbox. Is this a bug, or just a
(really really stupid and annoying) deliberate UI-simplifying decision

[Bug 221331] [NEW] [hardy] cannot change screensaver options

Public bug reported:

Many versions of Ubuntu ago, it was possible to set a number of
individual options on each screensaver. At some point along the way,
somebody decided those options were too confusing or something and
removed them, so now if I want to change the default options I have to
go looking for some textfile config. This is really, really stupid.
Windows screensavers have those options still, and it doesn't seem to
unduly confuse any windows users.

[Bug 159868] Re: nvidia-glx makes links to incompatable modules

2007-11-04 Thread zcat
OK, I've tracked down the REAL problem, finally, I hope

At some point I tried to use the nvidia-glx-new drivers, and found that
they didn't work with my card. I also once tried nvidia's binary driver
installer, which is quite likely the most frustrating mistake I've ever
made since it seems to be at the root of every problem I've suffered
with drivers in the six months since. And along the way I somehow ended
up with /usr/lib/libGL*.100.14.19 libraries which should have been
removed when the matching nvidia driver binary was uninstalled.

When I install nvidia-glx (or probably any number of other packages)
they run ldconfig, which moves those links to the most recent libraries.

SO.

There is no bug. Sorry for wasting your time.

Just to confirm; GLX on my system is currently in perfect working order
with the following links;

Links are broken (pointing to an incompatable version of the GL libraries).
if I restart gdm and log in, I have no GLX support.

This is on a box that was recently upgraded from feisty, and the printer was
working perfectly.
No difference between gnome interface or web localhost:631(?)

Printer doesn't get detected by 'add new printer'

After manually choosing port and printer details, printer immediately
moves all jobs to Stopped

Same problem happens for every printer I have available, PPT or USB.

sudo aa-complain cupsd has made the problem go away, for now at least.

Let me know if you want any more details.

[Bug 131521] Re: [Gutsy Tribe4] Can not found Canon printers

2007-10-28 Thread zcat
BTW; why the change from nice friendly gnome-cups-manager to the
hideously awful system-config-printer ?!!! It's like something out of
Slackware FFS!!

Somebody please change this back, or give me a really good reason why I
shouldn't use the old system!

This is a common call (Can you package an older version of this (e.g. 96xx)
series of NVIDIA binary only drivers?). The answer is almost certainly older
versions will not be packaged simply because NVIDIA don't support them. The
drivers in question are binary only and as the kernel and Xorg change old
drivers simply stop working and can only really be fixed by NVIDIA
themselves. NVIDIA only support the latest version of a driver in a given
series so if the latest version in the series you use has an issue, your best
bet is to report the issue to NVIDIA and hope that they will resolve it...

Do nvidia actually 'support' any of their drivers? Is 7xxx still
supported in some way that 96xx is not?

Except it's not really THAT bug.

Restricted manager is offering me the choice of a driver (nvidia-gxl)
that will NOT work with this card, it might as well be offering me the
use of the ATI driver. If I install nvidia-glx rather than
nvidia-glx-legacy, I will end up with a system than can't be started.

Whatever logic in the software decides that ATI drivers are not an
appropriate choice for an nVidia TNT2 should aldo decide that that
_only_ nvidia-glx-legacy should be offered in this dialog.

nvm, I'll check the latest ISO and find more bugs for you all to fix :)

Actually, while I have your attention there are a bunch of cards that
nVidia decided to stop supporting after the 1.0.9639 driver. The card I
have in this computer is one of those.

. It works with nvidia-glx-legacy, but is quite unstable with that
driver

. It works much better with a manually installed 1.0.9639 driver. Could
this driver be separately packaged as nvidia-glx-older or something?
Because it's a real pain to manually fix it after each kernel patch.

. It does not work at all with any driver after 1.0.9639.

. It does not work at all with the nvidia-glx package driver, wich ISTR
is 1.0.98??

[Bug 17881] Re: usb flash memory hangs after copying few MB

2007-05-10 Thread zcat
I'm not sure if I have the same problem, but it's quite similar and has
happened on two different machines (both running Feisty), multiple USB
ports, different logins, and with two completely different MP3 players.

I start to copy a significant amount of files, and after a short time I
get all the symptoms of the device having been unplugged. This happens
about one time in ten, perhaps more often if I start copying several
folders in parallel.

I glanced in dmesg the first time it happened and nothing seemed out of
the ordinary, it looked as if I had just unplugged the drive (at the
time I assumed I had just bumped the cable).
