[Bug 1008395] Re: Shouldn't put entry in /etc/xdg/autostart

2016-05-03 Thread Chris
Since it appears that this will be changed based on user demand, I will
chime in and say random apps should not set themselves to autostart by
default. IMHO, this is a bug. Since the author and I strongly disagree
about this, I have uninstalled it.

This motivation isn't enough to make an application start itself at
startup. If you believe that some users may like to autostart psensors
at startup, let them choose to do so or not during the installation of
the package.

Please also remember that for each complaint received, there are other
100 users that just grow up frustration and hate for your application,
without saying a word.

[Bug 1008395] Re: Shouldn't put entry in /etc/xdg/autostart

2014-04-24 Thread Jean-Philippe Orsini
Just for the note: since the patch is not turning off the autostart but
removing the desktop file, it will require the user to understand that
they cannot simply use the 'startup application' of gnome and add
psensor. They will need to dig into $HOME/.config/autostart and tune the
desktop file in order to start psensor at the right stage of the session
startup with appropriate wait time. It has raised several reports in the
past.

[Bug 1008395] Re: Shouldn't put entry in /etc/xdg/autostart

2014-04-24 Thread MagnusPI
It tooks me hours to pin down the problem since I thought it was a bug in
kdeinit4.
As it stands psensor behaves like a malware and if you are an average user it
is very hard to find the solution.
Pls reconsider your decision or at least add some _clear_ notice.

That could be applied to any program that people usually use, even
Firefox or a music app. I think it isn't appropriate for individual
apps to launch themselves on login. The desktop environment should
take that responsibility in a way that is consistent for all apps, in
one place.

At the very least, an app should have an option to launch itself. It
shouldn't require command line gymnastics to disable (and I say this
as one who uses terminals frequently).

[Bug 1008395] Re: Shouldn't put entry in /etc/xdg/autostart

2012-07-19 Thread jeanfi
I understand that some users might not like this choice.

I have taken this decision because of the following reasons:
 - I have received more questions about 'how to autostart psensor' than the
opposite
 - this is coherent with other similar monitoring applications like
indicator-weather
 - I think that most people installing psensor is to benefit from alerts and a
continous monitoring
 - there is certainly more mono-user usage of Ubuntu than multi-user

So, I set this report to 'Opinion' but I will continue to follow it and
I am ready to turn off the autostart if I receive a significant number
of complaints.

** Changed in: psensor (Ubuntu)

[Bug 1008395] Re: Shouldn't put entry in /etc/xdg/autostart

2012-07-19 Thread jhansonxi
Technically it is per-user. The /etc/xdg/autostart file is the default:
http://standards.freedesktop.org/autostart-spec/autostart-spec-latest.html

To disable it with Gnome use gnome-session-properties (System >
Preferences > Startup Applications). This creates a local version in
"~/.config/autostart" with "X-GNOME-Autostart-enabled=false".

To make this the default for existing accounts you will have to copy the
disabled version it to each user's home directory in the same relative
location (and change the file ownership). To disable it for new user
accounts, copy the local version to /etc/skel with the same directory
structure, owned by root.

To remove it completely and keep the change from reverting during
updates, use dpkg-divert to create a diversion of the file in
/etc/xdg/autostart and delete or move it elsewhere (like the psensor doc
director in /usr/share/doc).

I don't want it to start with system either. I can add it to autostart myself
when I want to. At least autostart this should be as option and not system
wide but per user.
I have psensor 0.7.0.0-0~525~precise1
