I subscribed ubuntu-universe-sponsors. The last debdiff fixes a problem with the .desktop file of gsambad and we wish it to be uploaded to Ubuntu repositories. desktop-file-validate now gives no any warning about the desktop file. Here's the last debdiff. You're right when you say that they're common, but if you run a desktop- file-validate against that .desktop file you will receive errors and/or warnings because they're not freedesktop compliant. -- gsambad launcher https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/106112 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 106112] Re: gsambad launcher
Actually, these values where already here before I made the patch to fix this bug, but if these values shouldn't be there, we can fix them too, shouldn't we? I just looked at some other .desktop files and the encoding field + 'Application' in categories seems very common. Example : The encoding field can be found in the K3B, Firefox and Gedit desktop file Example : Application in categories field can be found in the Gnomad2, Firefox and K3B desktop file. I've just tried your patch, it applies clearly but the .desktop file I get in /usr/share/applications contains some deprecated values: - encoding field - 'applications' in categories -- gsambad launcher https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/106112 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 106112] Re: gsambad launcher
There we go! I made a new debdiff that change the .desktop file to use "gksu gsambad", removed the .png in the iconfield and added my comment in the changelog. I think it's allright. [Bug 106112] Re: gsambad launcher
Yes, that is true that -S option is not needed. If gksu only is used user can still modify is it sudo way or some other backend, see man gksu documentation: gksu is a frontend to su and gksudo is a frontend to sudo. Their primary purpose is to run graphical commands that need root without the need to run an X terminal emulator and using su directly. Notice that all the magic is done by the underlying library, libgksu. Also notice that the library will decide if it should use su or sudo as backend using the /apps/gksu/sudo-mode gconf key, if you call the gksu command. You can force the backend by using the gksudo command, or by using the --sudo-mode and --su-mode options. If no command is given, the gksu program will display a small window that allows you to type in a command to be run, and to select what user the program should be run as. The other options are disregarded, right now, in this mode. - End of quote I also checked my current other desktop files like these and mostly were used gksu only without any arguments so it should be ok also in this case. -- gsambad launcher https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/106112 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 106112] Re: gsambad launcher
Thanks for your suggestions, I agree with the new description for the changelog and the .png removal! Concerning the gksu, now that we're searching for what's best, don't you think that just "gksu" without -S or -X would do the job? I don't really know the -S option but it looks like it tells gksu to works like sudo, and I know that's not the best idea for a graphical program. [Bug 106112] Re: gsambad launcher
I think it's better to use gksu -S instead of gksu -X ; you should also remove .png from the icon field. [Bug 106112] Re: gsambad launcher
Here's a patch file which fix that problem, just patch the gsambad-0.1.6 folder from the sources with that patch and package again. This patch is quite simple and has been tested, it works. [Bug 106112] Re: gsambad launcher
I also think that there's no need to put 'menu' in gsambad dependencies list (if there's no some hidden catch, of course), better is to change the .desktop file so that it uses 'gksu', so that nothing unnecessary doesn't get installed. -- gsambad launcher https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/106112 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 106112] Re: gsambad launcher
I can also see this problem with newly installed Ubuntu 7.10. su-to-root is not there by default. Succest that the desktop launcher is fixed to 'gksu -S gsambad'. Also this desktop file should be moved under System -> Administration (or something, I'm using Finnish translation) because for that purpose it is. -- gsambad launcher https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/106112 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 106112] Re: gsambad launcher
it seems that su-to-root isn't installed by default in the desktop version of ubuntu (well in fiesty fox anyway). easy fix though: sudo apt-get install menu then gsambad will work. i'm pretty new to ubuntu so please disregard the next bit if it doesnt make sense... "add/remove programs" is capable of handling dependencies by the looks of it, so couldnt "menu" be listed as a depend for gsambad and then this wouldnt crop up again? -- gsambad launcher https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/106112 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
