[Bug 106155] Re: Sbackup should report when a backup fails
I'm closing this report because the issue has been fixed in latest upstream version and won't fix in series 0.10. ** Changed in: sbackup (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/106155 Title: Sbackup should report when a backup fails -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

By "bump" I meant to keep this topic alive. Hopefully to see some progress in the not too distant future. Some information about this bug status: * it won't fix in series SBackup 0.10 because it's not easy to fix; thus it won't fix in any versions in current stable and supported Ubuntu versions (i.e. Lucid, Karmic and older) installed from universe repository * it is fixed in SBackup 0.11 and newer * version SBackup 0.11 will be included in Maverick * you can install SBackup 0.11 for supported Ubuntu versions (Maverick, Lucid, ...) from our PPA located at https://edge.launchpad.net/~nssbackup-team/+archive/ppa -- Sbackup should report when a backup fails https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/106155 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 106155] Re: Sbackup should report when a backup fails
Hello all, I have a question : Does this new improved nssbackup check to see whether the file system it is writing to supports file sizes of more than 4Gb ? Why ? Because, as others have pointed out here, guaranteeing data integrity in an End User backup product (or any backup product for that matter) is an absolute requirement. I have just discovered (as in today), whilst attempting to restore my system after a motherboard burn out, that sbackup fails on big writes to VFAT external USB drives without warning to the user, thereby producing corrupted tgz files which are useless for the purposes of restoring my system. As a business user, this is unacceptable (and even as a personal user, I am mightily upset (an understatement). Essentially, I have 3 months of absolutely useless backups because I put my good faith in a touted as "mainstream End User backup solution". If I were a more vindictive person, I would sue the backside off the persons or entity responsible (Canonical included) for making this software available, and as a lawyer, believe me that would be easy to do, irrespective of all the leakridden liability waivers that may or may not be apparent to the user (of which there are none with sbackup via the graphical interface at least AFAIK). Get it right before you release it into the mainstream distro, otherwise someone, somewhere will end up suing you. I sincerely hope that nssbackup is better, for everyone's sake. [Bug 106155] Re: Sbackup should report when a backup fails
@MikeR: Are you talking about sbackup or nssbackup? The (not so) simple backup suite is ready for daily use and not in alpha or beta state, current stable version is 0.2.1. Just have a look at https://launchpad.net/nssbackup To answer your questions: > Is there any chance of plugging the holes in sbackup? Yes, there are. I'm currently preparing the release of nssbackup 0.3 and this will re-merge with/replace sbackup 0.10.x into a stable Simple Backup 0.11 version > Or is there any equivalent which has passed testing and is reasonably stable? Of course, and as I wrote above nssbackup has passed testing and is reasonably stable. Moreover there are more... > This is a REAL, SERIOUS lack in Ubuntu! This is not a lack, this is community driven development. > no verify/notify option in nssbackup, either. So where is the advantage? 1. nssbackup is more robust than sbackup 0.10 and does not fail (if you are not hitting a bug, but this is something inevitable, there is not software that is 100% bug free). 2. nssbackup uses notifications and you'll receive a notification bubble or popup window if something bad happens. 3. Yes, you're right. verify is an outstanding feature. See the blueprint here: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/nssbackup/+spec/integrity-check Finally, I want to excuse any trouble you had with using sbackup 0.10. Please try nssbackup and the new version of sbackup if available. as an addendum to my previous comment: Checking the nssbackup page I see there is no verify/notify option in nssbackup, either. [Bug 106155] Re: Sbackup should report when a backup fails
bump again. nssbackup is not ready for the real world (I do NOT feel like trusting my backup to software in alpha, or even in beta) Is there any chance of plugging the holes in sbackup? Current development is focused on nssbackup ('Not so Simple Backup'), which actually does test integrity of backups, and reports problems. nssbackup is still in alpha state, however, and we're working on merging in sbackup (or its features) into it. [Bug 106155] Re: Sbackup should report when a backup fails
I can't believe that this problem still exists after two years. If theres one thing worse than no backups, it's faulty backups. A backup program that does not verify the backup and doesn't even report failures is useless - this is really a bug. Is there some way that this can be converted to a bug report or have the priority increased? Thanks. -- Sbackup should report when a backup fails https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/106155 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 106155] Re: Sbackup should report when a backup fails
The set-it-and-forget-it attitude of SBackup is convenient, but compared to some rather more mature OSs (no, not wintel...) there are two things I find lacking: one: The option to do a backup *with verification* -especially if Im backing-up to a remote or external device. The backup will run unattended anyway, so I don't really care how long it takes. This could be the non-default setting, for use only by particularly paranoid users. two: The possibility to see a log file of what was backed-up, whether everything I wanted was saved, what the verification results or errors were, The option of deciding what level of logging/error-reporting was enforced would be even nicer. -- Sbackup should report when a backup fails https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/106155 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
