I suspect this issue is caused by the efi-aware grub considering the USB device (your phone) as a boot disk somehow. Try pressing the escape key when booting and see if any messages that look relevant appear. Ideally, you should boot by removing quiet and splash from the kernel command-line. It would be useful to see your /etc/fstab file if you can attach it too. What happens if you boot the machine normally, login, and then plug your phone in? Nothing seems to happen when pressing Escape, even when booting with the quiet and splash flags removed from the kernel command-line.
