   [Impact]
Users are not able to use virtualbox from the repository on 12.04 with
3.5 kernel. It is totally broken.
The patch proposed backports only the relevant parts from upstream to
fix the bug.
   The patch is from: https://www.virtualbox.org/changeset/41660/vbox

   [Test Case]
Upgrade to 3.5 kernel on 12.04 and install virtualbox.

   Fixed during Quantal cycle.

   [Stable Fix]
Is being fixed in 4.1.12-dfsg-2ubuntu0.3 upload to precise-proposed.

   [Regression Potential]
It is best to use the latest upstream version. But since that will
cause major disruption, we have to track this package and corresponding
bugs for regressions.

jamespage: Please also check backwards compatibility with the 3.2
kernel; the patch should support this but best to make sure (not all
   12.04 installs with have 3.5).

Yes, I either have a different bug, or this isn't the real fix. I've tried
every combo in the thread above, and on a new install of 12.04, no go - I
did get as far as getting an error free install of VB, but then every
windows virtual machine crashes - and crashes linux itself - halfway
through a boot - right at that booting windows screen, before the login.

Re: [Bug 1081307] Re: virtualbox-dkms 4.1.12-dfsg-2ubuntu0.2: virtualbox kernel module failed to build [merge request]

2013-04-09 Thread Doug Coulter
I tried that too, no good (4.2.x, using the directions on the oracle site -
these are a little different, so something new to try) but I've not tried
every possible combination yet - only about 10 permutations so far
(speaking of frustration). When I tried the -proposed, it took the stuff
straight from oracle out and substituted 4.1.x during the install process.
I'd been doing the straight from oracle thing on 10.04 mostly, but not
upgrading everytime it asked, since that was causing my win-7 DRM to kick
in (till I got and used a key-cracker). That stank as I've paid for win7
twice and couldn't even run it at all after I upgraded VB - it detected a
hardware change on the upgrade and decided I'd stolen it.
So now I AM running a stolen iso with a key cracker, once, to get what I
paid for twice, on the 5-6 machines that *do not* run 12.04. Last night
the 12,.04 machine grabbed a new kernal, so now I get to try all this again
I suppose, but for now - it still does not work and even crashes linux back
to bios, with the usual bad effects on things like mail and web program
context for unexpected crashes (my own running code doesn't have issues
with sudden crashes since I wrote it with that expectation, it's an edge
case that gets hit here due to arcs in nearby HV supplies). Ugh.

To clarify - the other above suggestions did let me install VB at all,
and import an image - but all images crash during boot, before the main
screen shows up, usually. I once had win7 show me the login, but logging
in - boom, it crashed, then linux went down.

Could it matter that since I have plenty ram (8g) for what I use this for,
I didn't put in a swap partition? I've never had an issue with that
before, other than the linux install kinda whining when I don't. Since I'm
running a combo of SSD and spinner - I put / on the SSD, but /home and /tmp
on a spinner to prolong SSD life.

Doug

always have the latest Virtualbox version.

2013-04-08 Thread Doug Coulter
Does not work for me. I added -proposed to repositories. i had previously
removed all trace of virtual box.

I then did sudo apt-get update
Then I did sudo apt-get install virtualbox/precise-propsed

VB then appeared to come up at all. I tried importing a VB machine that
runs fine on 5 other machines here (but under U 10.04). No go - it didn't
like the extension pack.
So I tried the other available one at Oracle.

Now, partway through booting up windows, it simply crashes Ubuntu - hard
crash, back to bios. Whatever this fix is, maybe I'm missing something,
but crashing is WORSE than merely tossing an error and refusing to run. At
least it's a first - 10.04 hasn't crashed in 6-7 machines ever...in all
those years of daily use.

Re: [Bug 1081307] Re: virtualbox-dkms 4.1.12-dfsg-2ubuntu0.2: virtualbox kernel module failed to build [merge request]

2013-04-08 Thread Doug Coulter
No. Frankly, I've avoided upgrading to precise as long as I could as I
detest the new desktop (along with the huge majority of real old timer
computer devs/users). Now that there's Mate, I'm moving a few machines
over to get the new kernel etc. This is a new-build machine, so I had to
use 12.04/64 to get past the UEFI issues. I'd just as soon be using 32
bit, sigh, but had to go with the UEFI flow, you know.

I tried the advice above - using sudo apt-get install
virtualbox-dkms/precise-
proposed

Which removed VB 4.2 and put in 4.1.something. I don't care about that one
- I am not stressing VB much here - just using it to run windows to run
some lab tools that aren't compatible with linux (for my mass spectrometer
and suchlike, which barely run on windows, no hope in wine, and some of my
uP dev ide's for things like PIC uPs I write code for.)
.
Trying virtualbox from a terminal gives me an error - Error opening file
for reading: permission denied (when run as me). It doesn't get this error
running as sudo but...
It still crashes during *any* VM bootup - all the way back to my bios.
(Glad I have an SSD, I've never ever had to reboot linux at all, much less
6 times an hour).
Doesn't matter about what VM I try to boot - Xp or Win7, several versions,
re-import the appliance on every try (they get internally corrupted on
the attempt that fails). I did add the extension pack suitable for this
version of VB since those images do use USB.

Since the thing won't boot an image at all - kills the entire machine
partway through, I've not been able to install/update the guest additions
on these images...This is a real show stopper here - I'd hate to kick off
linux and have to build a windows-only box, but my physics lab has to
run...(www.coultersmithing.com/forums)

Precise is not making me at all happy. VB does work on machines I
upgraded that had it already, but not on this new build. The thing is, a
fusor sometimes fries a nearby data aq PC - so I need to keep making more
machines now and again...(something about a 100kv power supply arcing and
making gigawatt emp - despite shielding, sometimes fries a mobo). This
machine is intended to be ready for when the one in service has that happen
to it.

I can't get 10.04 to install at all on a UEFI mobo, even trying my best to
turn the UEFI junk off in the bios (ASUS P8H 77-M/i5/8gig ram).

Is there anything else I can use that will import .ova files? I'm not wed
to VB or especially anything oracle...just need something that'll get my
job done.

If you install linux-image-generic-pae (3.2.0.39.47), the one that
12.04.1 had, and boot your system with it, and virtualbox still doesn't
run, then it's another issue, not the one described in this bug.

This bug report is about a regression from 12.04.1 to 12.04.2+.

2013-04-08 Thread Doug Coulter
Although I've already put some days of work into building this system up -
I'll try that if I can find an old distro version - I've got to get this
working doggone it. I never said this was the same bug - the
devs/maintainers said that and moved my report.
(Not that I was cool enough to do full research - I just submitted an
automatic bug report)

[Bug 1081307] Re: virtualbox-dkms 4.1.12-dfsg-2ubuntu0.2: virtualbox kernel module failed to build [merge request]

2013-04-02 Thread Brian Murray
Hello Radoslav, or anyone else affected,

Accepted virtualbox into precise-proposed. The package will build now
and be available at
http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/virtualbox/4.1.12-dfsg-2ubuntu0.3 in
a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to
enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update
out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag
from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the
bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to
verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help
us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance!

[Bug 1081307] Re: virtualbox-dkms 4.1.12-dfsg-2ubuntu0.2: virtualbox kernel module failed to build [merge request]

2013-03-05 Thread Lekensteyn
I propose to use the patch from #3, but refresh it against the current
sources. Then use dkms.conf to apply it to 3.5 only. This will not cause
regressions with the 3.2 Precise kernel for sure, but it allows the
currently broken quantal lts kernel to build.

As a quick hack, I downloaded the patch to /etc/dkms/ and post-processed
it to allow DKMS to accept the patch:

sed 's,/src/VBox/Runtime,,' 38-fix-for-3.5-kernel.patch -i

Next, I created /etc/dkms/virtualbox.conf containing:

PATCH[0]=../../../../../../../../../../../../../../etc/dkms/38-fix-for-3.5-kernel.patch
PATCH_MATCH[0]=^3.5
(the definitive fix for ubuntu should put the patch in
/usr/src/virtualbox-*/patches which allows the .././etc/dkms/ part to be
stripped)

Result:
# dkms -m virtualbox -v 4.1.12 install
